Beauty Gently Does It

by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk

This month we’re talking oils, hair dyes and (ouch) waxing. Summer is just around the corner, so we can no longer hide away under layers of winter woollies‌ We beauty writers tend to focus on new launches. We’re a bit like magpies – easily distracted by new shiny things. But this month I thought I’d celebrate an underrated classic – Fenjal. Just a whiff of the bath oil conjures up images of my grandma, who’s used it since I was tiny. I’m reminded of her every time I open my Fenjal Classic Shower Oil, ÂŁ5.49, but that’s not the only reason I love it. Packed with natural oils, including grapeseed and soy, it leaves my skin feeling really soft and lightly scented. I’m a big fan of botanical oils and use at least one every day. On my ‘to-buy’ list is andiroba oil. And it’s not just me; according to Lorraine Dallmeier of Formula Botanica, this golden Central American oil has ‘attracted great interest from the cosmetic industry in recent years for its potential DQWL LQĂ DPPDWRU\ SURSHUWLHV ¡ 6KH explains, ‘This oil will nourish your dry and sensitive skin and as an added bonus, it will also repel insects, which makes it an ideal choice for packing when you go on your summer holiday!’ Fancy learning more about natural oils? Formula Botanica has a wide range of online courses, teaching students how to select and blend natural skincare ingredients.

Use Locally - Issue 37 May 2016 Light coloured hair can easily look dull and lifeless, so my go-to hair shampoo this month is the PRO:VOKE Touch Of Silver Brightening Shampoo. I start by prepping with the Pre-Toning Primer, which adds shine and smooths cuticles. The shampoo’s violet pigment then helps to neutralise brassiness and protect my colour. Finally, the intensive conditioner undoes some of the damage caused by my highlighting habit. Plus, as the range starts at just £3.19 in Boots, it doesn’t break the bank. As mentioned, my hair is feeling a little harddone-by at the moment, so I’m giving it a rest from bleaching. Instead, I’m using Naturtint, £10.99, to refresh the colour and cover the grey. Probably the gentlest home-colour on the market, Naturtint doesn’t contain any ammonia, SDUDEHQV 6/6 PLQHUDO RLOV SDUDIÀQ or silicones, so it doesn’t damage my hair. It’s also enriched with plant and seed oils, so leaves my locks really shiny. I’ve hauled my summer clothes out of the loft, and my thick tights have been banished to the back of the drawer for another few months. Unfortunately, that means there’s no escaping the need to regularly de-fuzz. If you’re brave enough to wax, Parissa Warm Wax, £12.99, is one of the simplest ways to ensure hair-free legs for longer. The wax is easy to melt in the microwave, and the fabric strips are strong enough to reuse a few times. 7LS GXVW D ÀQH OD\HU RI EDE\ SRZGHU over your skin before waxing, as it helps to make the wax easier to remove.)

INVINCIBLE! NEWARK HOVERFLIGHTS UK Following a two year period of leaping hurdles and jumping through hoops and much difficulty in the financial world trying to find funding for a new start-up business, Kiyth Fotitt (58) of Newark has just found funds through access to a deferred pension that is 30 years old. Newark Hoverflights is a new and unique business which starts trading in spring 2016. Its primary activity is the provision of inland hovercraft cruising in the Leisure/Recreation/Tourism market centred around the River Trent and with land based activity at four other locations in the area. Almost everyone will be able to experience the exhilaration of

hover-flight with a trained and qualified pilot in full control, enabling you to make the most of your adventure. Paying passengers can engage in this amazing activity without needing any prior experience or preparation. Just sit back and relax - No Bover, Enjoy the Hover! Apart from just a cruise how about a ladies night out (or gents) on a 4 or 5 stop riverside pub cruise or do you want to involve it in some corporate team building exercise or you've got a birthday party you want us to be part off. A major event or village fete, an

Open Day or just a static attraction. I'll take it anywhere I can. Into a school for a science lesson with free trips around the field for the kids who win a competition or maybe you want to use it for your wedding day. There's lots of potential. Enjoy the fun, the speed, the environment and the experience from a unique and rare perspective. The service will run all year round, available for 365 days and on demand. The Service will also be offered to the Police and Fire and Rescue Service.

If you fancy a cruise or land based hovercraft activity, let me know so I can start planning stuff. Email me on kiyth@newarkhoverflights.co.uk.

Tenacity, perseverance and determination are essential qualities. Never give up because winners never quit, and quitters never win. Invincible! Oh, that’ll be the name of the hovercraft. 24

One night is never enough! By Karol Watson Todd For a real trip into the country you cant go wrong with Craxton Wood. The hotel is nestled in 27 acres of woodland and is a perfect venue for a weekend trip, with a Spa that has recently benefitted from a 1.4 million refurbishment, and a restaurant serving absolutely delicious food.

C

raxton Wood is also close to Chester, a really lovely town to visit, plus even close enough to Liverpool for a Beatles Tour. You won’t be short of things to do around and about. The real reason to visit though is the service, the spa and the food. Surely the 3 most important things to consider when you take a much needed mini break. This is where Craxton Wood comes into it’s own, you could easily spend 4-5 hours enjoying the Thermal Suite of steam room and saunas, and the pool was a perfect temperature. There is a darkened quiet room and a 26

separate garden room to relax still further after a treatment – I had a Biotec Sonic Skin Radiance Facial and my OH had a massage, both utterly relaxing, so much so I fell asleep during mine! – With herbal teas on offer as well as fruit infused water. Fresh robes were available on request, and it was nice to be able to have a fresh robe

before our treatments. My top tip is organize your treatments for as late as possible as once you have those marvelous oils massaged in, you will want to relax on a lounger in a quiet room and drift away! The bright and airy coffee bar in the spa serves some healthy options as well as some decadent cakes for afternoon tea! And make a perfect finish to a hard afternoon, relaxing at the spa!!! Our bedroom was spacious and well furnished, with toiletries in the bathroom, large fluffy towels and an abundant supply of hot water. The usual tea and coffee were in the room alongside a little note, inviting us to call if we required more. I thought that was a nice touch, as often I feel awkward about asking for extra milk or another teabag! The bed was just perfect and

In the evening we had a meal in the hotel restaurant, The Craxton Wood Grill. The food was utterly mouth watering, we both had different cuts of beef, and it was cooked to perfection. Starters and desserts were also delicious, and the wine list was well thought out to appeal to all foods and palates. Also on the menu was a fantastic idea of “Host A Roast”, allowing you to have a meal with family or friends and have it served and carved at your own table. I hope this catches on, as this is a great idea! Breakfast the next morning was also good, with a mixture of a buffet style and service. My husband always likes to set up the bacon challenge at any hotel we stay at, and after discussions with the waiter off they went to have a try. He likes his bacon very well done to the point of being crispy, without burning it into a cinder! Another tick in the box for Craxton Wood! Without hesitation, I highly recommend Craxton Wood for a mini break, its impossible to fault them, and the extras really made the stay superb. I went there thinking it’s a little bit further than I would have liked on a mini break, but left thinking how soon can we go back? The extra 20 or so minutes on the journey took me to a city I hadn’t visited before – Chester – and a superb hotel at a very reasonable price. Put it on the list for a visit this year! As I said, one night is never enough!

The Grass Can Be Greener by Pippa Greenwood

Your garden should now be starting to look lush and green, with beds and borders beginning to come into their own. But if your lawn spoils it all, or you want to install one, now is the perfect time to get started. PREPARING THE SITE Remove all weeds, large stones, debris and any old grass, then dig or fork over thoroughly to remove all taproots of weeds. Kill off an old lawn or a weed infested site with weedkiller based on glyphosate, then strip it off or dig it in once it all dies off. Incorporate organic matter to improve moisture retention on sandy soils; on heavy soils dig in grit and organic matter for drainage. 1H[W ÀUP WKH ZKROH DUHD by treading it over evenly in à DW VROHG ERRWV WKHQ UDNH thoroughly and remove stones or other debris from the surface, treading gently down again if necessary.

A ‘bowling green’ effect may look superb but will need more maintenance and be less hardwearing. Avoid cheaper turf as it can contain weeds, pests or diseases, or is simply not a good grass mixture. Arrange delivery of turf when you need it and never store for more than two days. Roll out each turf carefully so that the edge abuts onto its neighbour. Lay the next row, again ensuring that the long edges of each abut onto the long edges of the last row. To avoid damage, kneel on a plank placed over the previous row and continue until your new lawn is in position. If you need a small section of turf to complete a row, add this in the middle of a row rather

than at the end so it is less likely to be dislodged or dry out. For a curved edge lay the turves so that they overlap the new lawn edge and cut to shape. :KHQ Ă€QLVKHG JHQWO\ WDPS the area over using the back of a rake and if any turves sink place some extra soil underneath until they are level. BUYING TURF Buy turf from a reputable supplier which is suitable for your requirements – some, especially those including lots of dwarf ryegrass, are much tougher, while some contain a seed mixture for use in shade. 38 Your banner here? Phone for more info: 01529 469 526 / 07527 006737

And Another Thing... Tom Makes A New Friend by Tom Hughes Follow Tom on Twitter @groomsdaybook

Snuggled up on the sofa with her iPad, My Dearly Beloved sat giggling to herself. I lowered my copy of What Camper Van to ask what was tickling her so. “Oh it’s Steph, she’s just so funny. The mention of that woman’s name gave my heart cause to sink, for Stephanie was Sarah’s N.B.F. (New Best Friend) - a position to be treated with great caution. Cue eye rolling from yours truly. “Listen you big snob, just because you don’t go on Facebook, don’t sneer at those who do. It’s a great way to stay in touch with people. It’s not shallow at all.

shall I?

“I want to go home.

“Up to you, anyway don’t make any plans for Friday, we’re going out for dinner with Steph and Dave. The idea of Steph invading our lives I had resigned myself to. But now Sarah was adding a Dave. I knew nothing of this ‘Dave’ person. I gave a little involuntary shudder. “Tom, what is the matter with you? He’s a nice guy. You and him could become friends.

Sarah pressed on. “Just relax, and whatever you do, don’t crack that ‘You’d be out by now’ joke.

“I’ve already got friends thank you. We won’t get on, trust me. What does he do? “I think he’s a Management Consultant. “I’m not going.

“But darling, that’s my default gag. “Let’s just go in. Greeted by a handsome young man pretending to be from Sicily, we were shown to our table, at which the dreaded love birds where already ensconced. Noting that Dave (tall, trendy haircut, polo neck) had a micro check of his watch as we approached, I was greeted with a dreaded ‘man hug’. “Tom! So glad you could make it! (obviously a dig) Tom, I’d like you to meet the gorgeous Steph.

Sat in the car park of the restaurant, Sarah had some strong words for me. “Listen Highlights, fake tan, white Tom, I let you wear that WHHWK J\P Ă€JXUH ´7RP , 6DUDK Ă LSSHG KHU WDEOHW old shirt as a compromise. feel as if we already know round to show me a video Steph and Dave have each other, Sarah’s told me of a cat on a skateboard. been married for nineteen so much about you.â€? “Isn’t that hysterical?â€? years and she says a “Yes, and I’ve seen the “I’ll throw all my Laurel and good marriage is all about pictures on the internet.â€? Cue frozen grin from Steph and icy stare from Sarah. “...on Facebook, obviously. Minor crisis averted, Sarah, noting that the lovebirds were holding hands, grabbed at my wrist, thereby disabling my left arm.

and proudly declared - “We haven’t got one. Dave, I believe you’ve been married nearly twenty years? Dave beamed uxoriously at his wife. Ignoring the kick from Sarah I pressed on. “You’d be out by now.

My throat tightened. “Prison, because if, instead of marrying her, you’d murdered her with say, an‌axe?â€?

Sat on the couch three weeks later, in an attempt to thaw relations I decided to offer an olive branch. “Sarah, why don’t you ask Steph and Dave over for dinner. I’ll cook. Really I don’t mind.

“She’s run off with her personal trainer. I never liked her anyway. Now make yourself useful darling and put the kettle on. Sarah’s warm smile sent me to the kitchen, safe in the knowledge that no matter what, there would only ever be one girl for me.
