Karol’s Korner

October already? Where has 2019 gone? And just this weekend I have put on my fleeces again, feeling the chill! This month we have a fantastic article about being Vegan, a choice that is becoming more and more popular and one we need to support, plus our regular features and competitions. Time to start thinking about where you may have Christmas as well! Going out for Christmas or staying home, make sure to think could a vegan Christmas be the way forward this year? News from the show scene? – last weekend my lovely red poodle girl Flame became an Irish Champion, my first Champion in Ireland so celebrations all round! We have been rushing round Europe doing as many shows as possible pending Brexit and the possible difficulties in showing in Europe, so Wally & Scarlet have become Belgian Champions, International Champions and Flame a Belgian Junior Champion. A couple more shows to cram in before the Oct 31st deadline and fingers crossed we get those last couple of titles before European showing becomes so difficult that we have to stop! Here’s Flame proudly showing off her final Green Star! Have a great October

Is early repayment right for your mortgage? If you have money left over at the end of each month, or have received an unexpected lump sum, you may be thinking about paying off your mortgage early. You can save large amounts in interest and potentially cut your mortgage term by years but it’s not always the best option. So what factors do you need to consider before deciding whether to clear your mortgage early? Does your mortgage allow for overpayments? Not all mortgage products let you overpay and some will charge you for doing so, but many allow borrowers to overpay up to 10% of the outstanding mortgage with no penalties. Search the RHS website for pollinatorfriendly plants for pots and window boxes. Reuse Try to reuse before buying new. You could melt wax crayons down in silicone cake moulds to make new chunky crayons for example. Kids desperate for plastic toys? Buy them second-hand on eBay or Facebook Marketplace.

Small steps to make a big impact It’s not always easy to be ecofriendly, but there are ways you can work together as a family to lead a greener life. Discuss the issues Talk to your family about what you want to achieve and why. You might be surprised at what they come up with. After watching ‘War on Plastic with Hugh and Anita’, my children announced they were giving up jelly pots and other plastic-wrapped snacks. Can you commit to walking or cycling to school rather than going in the car? Can you all agree to use reusable water bottles rather than buying drinks while you’re out? Recycle Make recycling easier by labelling your bins so it’s clear what goes in each one. Print pictures to stick on the lids if you have young children. Short on space? Ikea sell space-saving stackable storage bins. Crisp packets, biscuit wrappers, toothbrushes, contact lens packaging and baby food 10

pouches usually aren’t collected by the council, but they can be recycled by TerraCycle. Alternatively, Ellie’s Fund has recycling collection points across the UK to raise money for brain tumour research, see www. elliesfund.com/recycling.

Take action Get your kids involved in campaigning! You could encourage them to write to your MP or send letters to ask favourite brands to reduce plastic waste. You could even take part in family-friendly climate marches together. Make the switch Some of the things that make the most difference actually take the least amount of work. Switching to a renewable energy supplier such as Bulb, Ecotricity or Octopus only takes a few minutes. Most green energy companies have excellent customer service ratings and sometimes work out cheaper than the larger companies. Move your money Banks often use your savings and loan repayments to invest in companies you may not want to support. It’s easy to move your family’s money to a more ethical provider. Charity Bank, Triodos and Ecology Building Society all offer a range of ethical investment opportunities and savings accounts. Want to stick to a high street bank? The Co-operative Bank has a strict ethical policy that sets out what it won’t invest your money in. By Kate Duggan

WHO ARE THE CHRISTADELPHIANS? “Who are these Christadelphians?” we hear you say. Let us tell you. They are a community bound together by a common faith in the gospel preached by Jesus Christ and his apostles: and have borne the name “Christadelphian” since the mid-19th century.

OCTOBER TALKS

Their name encompasses in one word the phrase, “brethren in Christ”, a phrase used by the apostle Paul to describe 1st century Christians. [Cf. Colossians 1:20].

6th October Speaker P. Chapmen Subject: What is Hell

Their faith and teaching stem solely from the Holy Bible, which, as the word of Almighty God, they acknowledge as the sole authority on matters of belief and conduct. They do not believe that any of their members, past or present, have received any special revelation, but that it is the Bible alone that is able to bring men and women to a knowledge of the way of salvation through Jesus Christ. [CF. 2 Timothy 3:15].

13th October Speaker P. Brooker Subject: Why Faith is vital

There has been a Christadelphian community in Newark for over 168 years, and they now meet in their own hall in Cliff Nook Lane, off Appleton gate, NEWARK, NG24 1LY. On Sunday evenings, commencing at 5.15pm, where the first century Christian gospel is preached, and Bible teaching on aspects of behaviour is examined. You are warmly invited to join us. In addition you may wish to log on to our international website: www.thisisyourbible.com.

20th October Speaker S. Mills Subject: The World’s future is certain. Is yours? 27th October Speaker J. Hallawell Subject: The Devil in the mirror

The UK’s biggest vintage tractor show Over a century of farm machinery is to be displayed at the UK’s biggest vintage tractor and heritage show. 17th NEWARK VINTAGE TRACTOR AND HERITAGE SHOW On 9 & 10 November, Newark Showground will once again be holding the largest show of its kind in the UK. This familyfriendly annual autumn event will feature hundreds of vintage agricultural and horticultural machines as well as plenty of trade stands, demonstrations and displays. The feature tractor themes for 2019 are; International Harvester, CASE and David Brown (pre 1796). You’ll also see original condition vintage machines, the UK’s premier restorations, static and working stationary engines, commercial vehicles and horticultural equipment! This year’s event will see more tractors than ever before, with the event having expanded into the John Eastwood Buildings to accommodate the growing show. The Show strives to include as many vintage vehicle varieties as possible and collectors proudly bring along lovingly restored fire engines, commercial vans and lorries, military jeeps and carriers. Collections of vintage machines will be on display inside and outdoors on Newark Showground and visitors are encouraged to bring their

questions to the expert enthusiasts, located on the various tractor club stands. For the non-tractor enthusiasts in your family, there is still plenty to see and do, with displays of traditional crafts such as spinning, stick-making and chair caning as well as numerous indoor and outdoor trade stands offering opportunities to shop for products from country wear clothing, gifts, footwear, original paintings and prints, to sweet and savoury snacks, as well as items that will appeal to agricultural machinery enthusiasts. Children will be pleased to visit Father Christmas in his ‘igloo’ where he will attentively listen to ‘what they want for

Christmas’. Tasty hot meals, drinks, cold snacks and ice-cream will be available at various outlets and a sit-down meal will be available in the Cedric Ford, lovingly cooked and served by Newark Showground’s on-site catering team, Tastes. Don’t miss the annual Remembrance Sunday Service, held amongst the vintage tractors displayed in the George Stephenson Exhibition Hall, which is supported by Southwell Minster and this year will be commemorating D-Day. The service is and is always well attended, and the poignant sound of the lone bugler John Baigent signalling the two minutes’ silence to remember those lost at war is particularly evocative.

Newark Showground is located near the A1/A46/A17 roundabout just outside Newark so it’s easy to get to and parking is FREE Further details can be found by visiting www.newarkvintagetractorshow.com closer to the dates. If you are interested in sponsoring any aspect of this year’s show, please contact the show team, please visit www.newarkvintagetractorshow.com/sponsorship for further details. 14

LIVING LIFE On the Veg! BY Oliver Watson Todd Veganism - What does being Vegan truly mean? Being a vegan refers to the abstaining from the consumption and usage of animal product, and the associated philosophy that rejects the commodity status of non-human animals. Whether you are a vegan for the environment, the health benefits, or an advocate for animal rights, or even if you aren't vegan at all, The Vegan Campout is an amazing experience for all the family to discover what living life on the veg is all about! I was overwhelmed with the incredible diversity of fellow herbivores from all around the world. Regardless if you came for the educational talks, the food, the activism or just the music...there was something for everybody. Educational Talks - With special guests including Animal Rights Activists Earthling Ed and James Aspey, Vegan Health Educator Dr Michael Klaper and Vegan Bodybuilding Legend Jon Venus, there are talks that cater to all aspects of plantbased living. Many of the educational talks became very emotional as well as informative. What amazed us was the number of non-vegans that had come to further educate themselves 20

about Veganism. Bumping into all the various activists and speakers, who were wandering the campsite, looking for food or just simply meeting the fans and taking in the beautiful atmosphere, was an absolute delight, sharing ideas, thoughts and tips on the festival!" Food - It’s all about the food! - an unbelievable array of different food stands, stalls and food trucks - all 100% Vegan. Everything from "Fried Chikken" to Waffles was available. Whatever your favourite food, there was a veganfriendly version available to try. The most popular of all

was Earthling Ed's Unity Dinner, selling its famous ToFish & Chips - a vegan alternative to the traditional English dish of Fish & Chips made from fried tofu where all proceeds are donated into furthering animal right activism. Along with the vast selection of food stands, the Campsite was also a host to various animal rights activist stands, ethical clothing brands, and even a virtual reality stand, educating people on the conditions inside factory farms Music - A plethora of different genre of music ranging from Shirika Soun d System Akala to Shikari Sound System was available long into the night after the kids had all gone to bed in the family camping zone. Yet this was not limited to nightlife, with acts performing throughout the days. With discos and raves, there is something for Sonia SaeActivist & all music tastes. Poet Including a special mystery guest Activism - An entire building dedicated to talks and lectures on activism and even more educational talks. Whether you are a new parent wondering how

to raise your children in a vegan household, wishing to partake in workshops about raising awareness or just to listen to introductory talks, the Activism Building was provided to inspire The Vegan Couple vegans to think Natasha & Luca more deeply about concepts and techniques of animal rights advocacy and the movement in general. Mind & Body - Whether you are a yogi, a bodybuilder, a vegan runner, or just into fitness, there is something to get those endorphins pumping. With activities from HIIT to Morning Meditation, they have it all. With so much to do, we here at Use Locally cannot wait to go again next year. Cheers to another cruelty-free year!

Everything Everyone Needs to Know about the Menopause Since menopause affects roughly half the population, it’s important for men to understand it as well as women, because it will affect their families, friends and colleagues. What is the menopause? Menopause occurs when a woman’s periods have stopped for a year, caused by reduced oestrogen and cessation of egg release. In the UK, most women reach menopause between 45 and 55. However, perimenopause – the premenopause phase when oestrogen levels decline – can last for months or years, as can symptoms (which may persist after periods stop). Most women have some symptoms, but for a minority, they’re severe and long-lasting. 24th - August 23rd

You'll be coming into your own on the 13th, thanks to an empowering Full Moon. Take this opportunity to command the spotlight. Promote your agenda, challenge rivals and satisfy your urges. In the past, people have accused you of being selfish, implying this was a character flaw. That's not the case in mid-October, when you've earned the right to satisfy your needs.

TAURUS April 21st - May 21st Hidden information will come to light on the 13th, due to a revelatory Full Moon. Now that you understand a loved one's past, it will be easier to achieve intimacy. Do your best to ease their fears and encourage their dreams. The New Moon on the 28th will pave the way to a partnership. This alliance won't be entirely easy. It will be difficult to satisfy your unusual tastes and sensibilities.

Taking an ethical stance will be rewarded on the 13th, thanks to a satisfying Full Moon. You may prevail in a legal matter or vanquish an immoral enemy. Give yourself a reward for putting personal interest aside for the sake of principle. The New Moon on the 28th will mark a professional opportunity that shakes up your domestic life. This job will require you to move far from home.

SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - Dec 21st After a long period of drudgery, you'll be able to relax and have some fun on the 13th. That's when an uplifting Full Moon invites you to come out and play. On the 28th, the New Moon could mark the beginning of a passionate romance.

The Full Moon on the 13th is a great time to strike a compromise with your best friend, romantic partner or business associate. The Rock Garden Is Alive‌ If you have ever dreamed of Sound of Music landscapes, then create your own! A garden mountain range might not be possible, but you may have space for your very own rock garden. So what do you need to do? You’ll need to choose a fairly sunny spot, ideally away from overhanging deciduous trees – most alpine plants like a fair bit of light and detest becoming clogged up with deteriorating leaves. Even if space is limited, make the rock garden on as large a scale as possible, for more impact and planting opportunities, and a more realistic feel. If possible include gullies running down the rock garden, perhaps ending in a pond or pool, by arranging rocks so that water can over or between them. Where the water runs beneath rocks (rather

Pick a retirement hobby while you are still working Retirement beckons, and with it the opportunity to do the things you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t had time for. However, research by the Skipton Building Society has shown that we don’t always follow up on our dreams of an active retirement: apparently many of us start to feel bored and undervalued within just ten months of stopping work.

Sociable hobbies Joining a choir can be one of the most rewarding ways to spend your leisure time. It’s estimated that a staggering 2.8 million Britons now belong to a choir, and recent research has shown that group singing is a particularly fast way to create social bonds – in other words, it’s a speedy short cut to making new friends.

According to the Age UK Index of Wellbeing in Later Life, the rate of our general wellbeing can increase by 20% if we simply engage with the world around us, whether that’s through social activities in the community, physical activities or creative pastimes.

references and yells of “Behind you!” a puzzled visitor to our shores might just recognise some familiar fairy stories and folktales. So how did it all start? Like most traditions, pantomime has grown from customs and practices that have been transformed over time by changing tastes and fashions.

Panto: the UK’s quirkiest tradition? Oh, yes it is! Have you booked your tickets for your local pantomime yet? Christmas may seem a long way off, but such is the popularity of panto, the best seats could have already disappeared in a puff of fairy dust. Pantomime is a British tradition that’s guaranteed to mystify anyone who is unfamiliar with our culture. The name itself creates confusion: when USbased Baywatch actor Pamela $QGHUVRQ UHFHLYHG KHU ¾UVW offer to appear in pantomime in Liverpool in 2010, she was convinced she would be “miming in a box” (bizarrely, she agreed to do it anyway). But underneath all the glitter, colourful dance numbers, popular songs, rhyming couplets, contemporary 42

There’s nothing like a Dame One of pantomime’s bestloved characters is the ‘Dame’. Nearly always played by a man, the Dame is generally portrayed as a vain, foolish woman, determined to get a husband at any price. But, with the possible exception of the villainous Ugly Sisters in Cinderella, the Dame never fails to gain the audience’s affection. It seems that we Brits simply love the idea of a man acting out a female role.

Hand coloured photograph of Widow Twankey in 1896 Maybe that’s because the practice of men appearing as women on stage is deeply embedded in British culture. Until the law was changed in the early 1660s, it was illegal for women to act in theatres, so audiences were used to seeing men performing in female attire. When boys with unbroken voices, wearing costume and make-up, played roles such as ‘Juliet’ in Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’, it was probably quite hard to spot the difference between a male and female actor, but when a grown man

took on a role such as Juliet’s gossipy nurse, the audience would have been conscious of the gender reversal, and would have no doubt enjoyed its comic potential. Cross-dressing was clearly quite acceptable to sophisticated city audiences three or four centuries ago, but it’s intriguing to discover that at that time communities in isolated rural areas were also playing with gender identity. In his book ‘The Beauties of the Country’ (published 1837), writer Thomas Miller records an ancient tradition where a ploughboy was GUHVVHG XS LQ JDXG\ ¾QHU\ as ‘Maid Marian’ for the village’s Plough Monday celebrations. Happily Ever After 7KH ¾UVW UXOH RI SDQWR LV WKDW the two young lovers must be happily married when the ¾QDO FXUWDLQ IDOOV &LQGHUV must get her Prince, Jack must rescue Jill from the giant and Aladdin must pair up with his Princess. The idea of putting two lovers at the heart of the plot comes from Commedia dell’arte, a broad type of comic performance popular in Italy between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, which is said to be the forerunner of our traditional pantomime. Commedia dell’arte was based on ‘stock’ characters, and plots generally featured a pair of lovers, a mischievous servant, a clown or pierrot character and a money-grabbing old man. The rich older man

could be the father of one of the female lovers, or a suitor hoping to marry a young woman (who was, of course, in love with a handsome younger man). While our young lovers of today have changed little from the Commedia dell’arte, some of the other characters KDYH EHHQ UHZRUNHG WR ¾W different panto plots. The clown is still with us in the shape of daft but lovable Simple Simon or Wishee Washee, while Cinderella’s footman Buttons is a pale UH¿HFWLRQ RI WKH &RPPHGLDµV high-spirited servants. Finally, the stock character of the old man appears variously as the foolish Baron Hardup (Cinderella), the villainous Fleshcreep (Jack and the Beanstalk) and the power-

hungry Abanazar (Aladdin). Harlequinade to pantomime In the seventeenth century British theatre borrowed some of Commedia’s characters to create an early type of pantomime known as a ‘Harlequinade’ (named after the clown character, Arlecchino). But pantomime as we know it today was created when audiences began to demand more and more spectacle. Canny theatre producers decided to discard the less popular parts of the Harlequinade but keep the transformation scene, where Harlequin waved his magic baton (nowadays a fairy wand) to reveal fairytale characters and scenes dramatically changing before the audience’s eyes. In the 1870s producers began to feature music hall stars as leading names, but these days a typical pantomime cast list could include soap stars, Hollywood legends and even recruits from reality TV shows. So pantomime goes on, changing year on year to suit current tastes, but in many respects remaining true to its earliest origins. It’s the one theatre entertainment that can successfully play to an audience aged between two and ninety-two, but will it continue to do so for centuries to come? Oh, yes it will! By Kate McClelland
