Spring has sprung, March madness is here and Mothers Day is around the corner.

What are you doing for Mother’s Day? When I started the magazines over 6 years ago, the entire ethos around the magazines was to encourage the use of local businesses, hence the name Use Locally.

That’s not to say I don’t use the chains, but if possible I like to spend my pounds with a local business person. So how can we support our local businesses and tradesmen, why should we?, how can we? What if it costs more and so on! Think of the saving to the environment when you shop locally, think of shop owners doing a happy dance, think of little girls at ballet lessons with the local ballet teacher, who in turn can then pay for her child to go to piano lessons to the little old lady in the street that used to be a pianist with an orchestra. She shops at her local Coop round the corner and her money means the Coop needs to employ an extra part timer working in the shop. The new employee then spends his money at the local vet and pet shop on his beloved pooch! See how spending locally makes our area vibrant and how the same few pounds can be spent and respent to make our area richer and improve our lives. So its a double win if you take mum to a local independent restaurant for Mother’s day, mums happy and business owners are happy!

A Day in Heaven at Ragdale Hall Spa

Relaxation for my body soul and spirit On a chilly January morning, 4 of us braved the forecasts of snow to meet up for a girly day at Ragdale Hall Spa. Tired and jaded after a Christmas with family, I was in serious need of rejuvenation. And this is definitely the way to do it.

F

rom the moment I stepped through the doors into the warmth of Ragdale, I was enveloped into an oasis of luxury and well being. Fluffy robes, calming music, ever present staff in the background to assist your

every need. Our first stop after our welcome drink was over to the treatment area to book ourselves some extra pampering. Many of the beauticians and therapists have been at Ragdale for many years, that sais 2 things

to me, they are both happy in their work and a terrific standard of work, it all adds to the feeling of being very well looked after.

A quick check on which classes were on offer that day, before starting in the thermal spa, to enjoy the scents of rose and jasmine and the sauna and steam rooms there, before indulging in a 45 minute aqua fit session, led by a highly motivational instructor! Im aching today!!

The thermal spa is a wonderful place to spend your time at Ragdale, the mixture of dry heat and steam really relaxes those tired muscles and allows essential oils to start working, soothing stresses away and easing aching bodies! Standing under the shoulder massage waterfall in the pool, is just bliss!

Use Locally - Issue 28 March 2019 tension away so I was ready to have a little nap on the sun lounger, and drift away to some spa music, just for a few minutes before lunch! The sheer bliss of a clandestine snooze is wonderful!

Onto Lunch in the wonderful dining room, with most dietary requirements catered for and a wide selection of delicious food on offer. None of us had any problem finding something we liked and going back for more! The food is part of the luxury of the visit and Ragdale doesn’t disappoint, indeed it surpasses expectation, and the range of salads proved to be so tempting that plates were

a treatment I choose, but the more I have them the more I find they melt away the tensions held in our faces, maybe you arent aware of holding tension there, but from tension comes wrinkles and facials really help with that!

Once my treatments were over I spent a final half an hour resting again before getting ready to leave, facing a cold evening and back to reality!

If I had anything to say regarding improvement at Ragdale it would be this.....

“Please extend Ragdale, with a private corridor all the way to my home”.....because its time I put myself first!

After lunch we popped down to the Vernadah Café for our apres lunch coffee and spent a lovely hour on comfy sofas chatting and catching up.

Time with girlfriends is so important. I felt reconnected and relaxed. Barely an hour later we could hardly stay awake! ( not the post lunch carb tiredness!) and we snoozed on another set of sofas in the larger sitting room waiting for our treatments.

My therapist was Lauren, and I had a Full Body massage, with her, She really found those knots and worked to ease them out. I felt wonderful afterwards, and I was grateful to Lauren for her expertise and kindness when those knots were being stubborn!

Back to the reception to wait for my facial, ...this time I did fall asleep on the table! Im so sorry for my gentle snores!( I hope I didn’t wake the entire area up!). Facials arent usually

Is A Diesel Car Right For Me? Despite recent bad publicity, GLHVHOV VWLOO žW WKH ELOO IRU VRPH GULYHUV ° DQG ZH H[SODLQ ZK\ Since September 2015, when news broke that Volkswagen had covered up illegally high emissions of nitrogen oxides from its diesel vehicles, diesel has come under a lot of pressure, with calls for it to be heavily taxed or even banned altogether.

Many say that diesel was mis-sold to buyers, promising low emissions and high fuel economy when in reality it was totally unsuitable for the journeys they do – but for some it’s still a good choice‌ :KDW¾V \RXU PLOHDJH" Diesel cars make sense for drivers doing over 20,000 PLOHV D \HDU ZKR EHQHžW IURP the increased fuel economy a diesel engine provides – and will save money over time.

Diesel fuel contains more energy than petrol, so despite being slightly more expensive it offers better fuel economy.

However, in most cases, 28

diesel variants of cars cost more to buy than their petrol equivalents, hence this price gap dictates the break-even mileage.

For example, the Volkswagen Golf 1.6-litre diesel costs around £1,600 more than the equivalent petrol car, giving a break-even mileage of 75,000 EDVHG RQ RIžFLDO IXHO HFRQRP\ žJXUHV )RU DQ DYHUDJH GULYHU that’s over six years, but someone doing 30,000 miles a year would break even in less than three years. :KDW W\SH RI MRXUQH\V GR \RX XVXDOO\ GR" 'LHVHOV DUH RQO\ HIžFLHQW DIWHU heating up, which means WKH\¾OO EH LQHIžFLHQW DQG SROOXWLQJ GXULQJ WKH žUVW miles or so of any journey – not good if you regularly make short trips. In addition, modern pollution control systems need the engines to be running at a certain RPM to function.

This is easily achievable on the motorway, but if your car starts a regeneration cycle while idling on the school run, you risk clogging up exhaust

gas recirculation systems or GLHVHO SDUWLFXODWH žOWHUV +RZ KHDYLO\ ORDGHG DUH \RX" Diesels have more torque or pulling power than petrol engines and thus are ideal for heavily loaded vehicles such as people carriers, vans, or trucks, or for those who often tow heavy items like caravans or horse boxes.

A diesel is more pleasant to use when loaded to capacity, and won’t suffer as much strain as a petrol car would. :KLFK FDUV DUH \RX ORRNLQJ DW" Sometimes there really is no alternative to a diesel unless you choose a different car – for example, there’s currently not a single petrolpowered crew-cab pickup truck on the UK market. The same can be true of people carriers and some executive or family cars.

Diesel can also be the sensible option in the luxury end of the market, where the petrol offering is perhaps a powerful V8 with poor fuel economy. In these situations, consider the diesel if you intend to take regular long journeys and have it serviced to keep the emission control systems running properly.

Certainly, many diesel car drivers would be better off in a petrol model, or an equivalent hybrid or electric model. Yet the fuel has its uses, for high-mileage, heavily laden or pennypinching buyers. As always, shop carefully and consider all the options before buying.
