District Council support local businesses during critical year with new offer and grant LOCAL businesses in the Newark and Sherwood district are being offered support and guidance by professional industry experts to help them in what will be a critical year for all businesses as they recover from the impact of the pandemic.

T

he £300,000 ʻBusiness Growth and Resilience Programmeʼ, which has been set up and funded by Newark and Sherwood District Council, is linking business service specialists with local businesses in four key business sectors: manufacturing and construction, accommodation, retail, food and beverage and health and social care. The programme offers a series of tailored workshops and sessions to local businesses within these four business sectors. Programmes are either 12 or 16 weeks in length and include a number of 1-2-1 workshops or mentoring sessions, reviews of business models, training opportunities and more. As part of the District Councilʼs commitment to support and help local businesses recover and grow post pandemic, those who take part in the programme could also be eligible to apply for a discretionary grant of up to £2,000. This grant could be spent by the local business in any way they best see fit to help their recovery and growth. The programme will provide local businesses with the latest guidance from industry experts whom will have a skill set and specialism in the identified

4

sector. This advice and guidance would support local businesses to adapt, seek new markets, develop a new business plan or marketing plan, modify their ways of working, assist in identifying new markets or products, establish new supply chains, or provide brokerage for skills and training. Places on the programmes are limited so local businesses

interested in taking part are asked to get in touch with Newark and Sherwood District Council as soon as possible. Upon successful completion of any of the programs, the District Council and the specialist business trainers will support local companies who are eligible to apply for a business grant of up to £2,000.

To find out more about all the schemes and to apply for one you’re interested in, please email: economic.growth@newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk

Operating since the 1990’s The Newark Crusader is a popular cruise boat for elderly, disabled and disadvantaged people from across the East Midlands. The boat is funded solely by charitable donations and relies heavily on volunteers and the skipper Les Reid to keep this pleasurable activity going.

T

he Newark Crusader boat was specifically constructed to carry groups with special needs, including those in wheelchairs. The pleasure of cruising on the River Trent is therapeutic, helping people relax and enjoy being in contact with wildlife and the outdoors. For many people that go on the boat, it is a rare opportunity to get out and about and socialize in a different environment. The boat has access for wheelchairs and those that need help with mobility as there is plenty of room on board to

manoeuvre. There is a large foredeck and a heated saloon with low-level windows for visibility. There is an accessible toilet for privacy, but with room to allow for help if require. The gallery area allows people to make hot drinks and prepare food. Upstream towards Hazleford locks is probably the most scenic route due to lots of wildlife inhabiting this area. Downstream towards Newark takes on a more

historical theme cruising past the historic buildings of Newark including Newark Castle, Newark locks and also takes you past more modern developments such as Staythorpe power station and both Newark and Farndon marinas. The boat can carry up to 12 passengers plus crew and there are two trips a day one at 11am and one at 2pm from Monday to Friday until September. The trips last roughly 2 hours.

To find out more information or to get involved visit www.newarkcrusader.com/river -trips/

(Please note that the Newark Crusader operates pre-booked trips for Care Homes, Special Needs Groups and Community Groups. Unfortunately they are not able to accommodate individual passengers or members of the public). 6

Stay alert to scams

Unfortunately scammers are clever and can make their attempts look genuine. Don't be fooled, it's not just older people who can get caught out by scams, research conducted in December 2020 showed that people aged 16-34 were the most susceptible to scams. How do I know if something is a scam? One of the most important things to remember is that if something seems too good to be true, then it probably is. Other warning signs are: l Someone you don't know contacting you out of the blue. l You're asked to give away personal information like passwords or your PIN. l You've been asked to transfer money quickly, often to solve a problem you didn't know you had. l Someone refuses to confirm the company or organisation they are contacting you from. l Email addresses or links within an email don't look right. Anyone can fall victim to a scam Scams come in many different forms, but the most common are phone scams, scam mail, phishing emails and doorstep callers.

8

If something doesn't feel right, then never be afraid to hang up, bin it, delete it or close the door. l Never give money, personal details or financial information to anyone you don't know. l Before buying online, check the website you're using by reading reviews. l Make sure your antivirus software is up-to-date. l Take your time to work out if an organisation is real, and always ask for ID. A genuine person

If you are concerned something might be a scam you can use the Citizens Advice online scams tool by visiting www.citizensadvice.org.uk and typing ‘Check if something might be a scam’ in the search bar.

Get your bathroom ready for when you return from hospital After a stay in hospital, it’s wonderful to hear the words “you can go home”. But if your physical needs have changed, it’s important that you can live at home safely and without any struggle. This might mean organising equipment or renovations before you come home. At AHM Installations we are used to installing bathrooms for people coming home from hospital. Here’s our guide to getting it right: Take note of what the professionals say. A doctor, nurse or occupational therapist may recommend what activities you need help with. For example, if you need a walking frame or wheelchair, as your bathroom supplier we’d need to know what size it is.

Know the difference between independent and assisted bathing. If your goal is to remain independent, we’d need to know whether you can sit down and stand up unaided, and how your mobility is likely to change over time. If a carer is going to help, then products such as bath-lifts may need to be considered. Ask a family member or close friend to help. Take the pressure off and involve someone you trust in making the decisions.

Use a bathroom company you can trust. Some companies focus on selling bathroom products without understanding your needs. At AHM our priority is quality of life – we think there’s no point having a product unless it makes things safer and easier for you. AHM has installed thousands of accessible bathrooms over the last 20 years, so we know how to make bathrooms safe and stylish whatever your budget. We believe everyone should have access to safe, affordable bathing. You’re welcome to call us on just for advice – there’s always someone at the end of the phone. We offer a Price Match Guarantee and discounts for military veterans and for those with dementia. www.ahminstallations.co.uk

IRENA SENDLER STATUE OFFICIALLY UNVEILED IN NEWARK

P

OLISH humanitarian hero Irena Sendler had her statue officially unveiled at Newark’s Fountain Gardens on London Road after a small COVID-secure ceremony on Saturday 26 June 2021. Although few people in the UK have heard of Irena, her story is one of monumental importance and one that Newark and Sherwood District Council, Newark Town Council and the Polish Cultural Institute in London want to share widely to ensure that her life becomes a legacy that will never be forgotten. During World War II Irena Sendler worked at the Department for Social Welfare and Public Health of the City of Warsaw, Germanoccupied Poland. During her time there she worked tirelessly to help protect and rescue many Jewish children and their families. She was part of a network of workers and volunteers from that department, mostly women, who smuggled Jewish children out of the Warsaw Ghetto. She would provide them with false identity documents and shelter them with willing Polish families or in orphanages and other care facilities, including Catholic nun convents, saving those children from the Holocaust. The German occupiers suspected Irena's involvement in this Polish Underground movement and in October 1943 she was arrested by the Gestapo. However, she managed to hide the list of the names and locations of all the rescued Jewish children, thus preventing this information

Reverend Canon Michael ODonoghue Dean of Sherwood and Parish Priest of Newark at the Polish war graves

from falling into the hands of the Gestapo. Withstanding torture and imprisonment, Irena never revealed anything about her work or the location of all the rescued children nor where she had hidden a list with their contact addresses on. She was sentenced to death but narrowly escaped on the day of her scheduled execution as the guards escorting her were bribed. The following day the Germans loudly proclaimed her execution was successful. Posters were put up all over the city with the

news that she was shot. Irena read the posters herself. During the remaining years of the war, Irena lived hidden, just like the children she rescued. Irena was the only one who knew where the list of rescued children was hidden. When the war was finally over, she dug up the jar where the names had been hidden in and began the job of finding the children and trying to find a living parent. It is estimated that Irena, who passed away in May 2008, saved many hundreds of Jewish children. Unfortunately, almost all the parents of the children

Irena saved died at the Treblinka death camp. After the war, Irena Sendler continued to provide help to the most needy in her community—she organised orphanages for children, cofounded nursing homes and social welfare facilities. Among the many decorations Irena received were the Gold Cross of Merit, granted in 1946 for the saving of Jews, and the Order of the White Eagle, Poland's highest honour, awarded later in Irena's life for her wartime humanitarian efforts. In 1965, Sendler was recognized by Yad Vashem as one of the Polish Righteous Among the Nations. This is an honorific used by the State of Israel to describe non-Jews who risked their lives during the Holocaust to save Jews from extermination by the Nazis. Newark and Sherwood District Council Leader, Councillor David Lloyd opened the event celebrating the achievements of Irena detailing how her actions saved the lives of many. The statue was then unveiled to the small number of socially distanced attendees by Air Chief Marshal Rt’d Sir Andrew Pulford, Deputy Lord Lieutenant and HE Arkady Rzegocki ,Polish Ambassador. Reverend Canon Michael O’Donoghue, Dean of Sherwood and Parish Priest of Newark blessed the statue shortly after. Sculptor Andrew Lilley went on to share a few words on the remarkable journey he went on in creating the statue commenting that “he hoped Irena’s story would be remembered for generations to come”. The statue has been largely funded by the Institute of Polish Remembrance and following its unveiling wreaths were laid at Polish War graves in Newark Cemetery on London Road in a mark of respect to all those who lost their lives during conflict. 11

No Mean Feet

Why our humble feet may be the lynchpin to overall physical health. Miles of pounding the pavements in sweaty running shoes, evenings spent strutting around bars in pinching high heels and long work shifts in flat loafers all take their toll on your feet. But while you may be familiar with many podiatry ailments such as corns, calluses and blisters, your foot alignment could be affecting other areas of your body as well. It may come as some surprise to realise that many of our joint ailments are caused by ill-fitting footwear, whether that’s a lack of support, a too-narrow fit, or heels that contort your bones. In short, your passion for fashion may be sparking a chain reaction all through your body that causes constant discomfort and pain. With all that in mind, surely it’s time to get some harmony back into your body. Misaligned feet problems and how to fix them Bunions Presenting on either the outer side of the big toe or less commonly the little toe (bunionette), bunions are a bony lump created by the metatarsal either enlarging or moving outwards. Caused by either wearing shoes that are too narrow or too high, tight calf muscles or feet that tilt either inwards or outwards, they can become incredibly painful and swollen. 12

Choosing shoes that have a wide toe box and arch support will take pressure off your bunions, while calf stretches may also improve them as well. Otherwise, your best option is foot surgery. Flat Feet Either inherent or caused by a collapsed arch, flat feet can lead to numerous problems throughout the body. Less able to absorb shock, flat feet can leave you more vulnerable to shin splints, inflamed Achilles tendons and general knee discomfort. Wearing insoles specifically designed for the condition, or specialised orthotics, can greatly improve not only foot discomfort, but general alignment throughout the body. Heel Pain Plantar fasciitis, or inflammation of the plantar fascia – the strong bowstringlike ligament that runs from the heel to the tip of the foot –

causes pain not only in the heel, but also in the middle of the foot and also muscle cramps in the calves. This is often the result of repetitive stress and pounding from walking or running due to poor foot alignment. While anti-inflammatory medications will help soothe discomfort, true relief will only come from orthotics or exercises that stretch the tendons and strengthen the lower leg muscles creating strength and stability in the ankle and heel.

Horoscopes by Russell Grant

ARIES

March 21st - April 20th There might not be much time for fun and games in early August. Heavy responsibilities to friends, colleagues and neighbours must be attended before you can take a vacation. The New Moon on the 8th may tempt you to dropping some of these obligations. Instead of turning your back on the people who depend on you, finish what you have started.

TAURUS

April 21st - May 21st Your hair-trigger temper could cause problems at home at the start of the month. Resist the temptation to lash out at a smug relative on the 8th, when the New Moon causes you to speak without a filter. You won't be able to take back your angry words and your relationship will suffer as a result. That might not seem like a big deal now, but it will later, when you need their support.

GEMINI

May 22nd - June 21st Talking about religion, politics and culture can be extremely frustrating at the beginning of August. Your family will be a tremendous source of comfort throughout the middle of August.

This is a great time to negotiate a raise.

VIRGO

Use Locally Meets…

e s u o h p r a h Joe S Head of Sales and Marketing at Liz Hobbs Group, promoters of the Ellis Mather Presents Newark Festival on Saturday 21 August

Tell us a bit about your background and where you grew up? I grew up in a small village in East Yorkshire not far from the market town of Howden with my parents (who were both teachers) and my younger brother. My mum taught me at junior school and my dad was my French teacher and head of year at secondary school…so I never got away with anything! Living in a small village there was very little for kids, so my brother and I kicked a ball around the garden for the majority of our childhood. Every Saturday we’d head over the Pennines to watch Burnley FC (blame my dad!!). I did my A Levels in Scunthorpe before heading to Nottingham for University, where I met my wife – also called Jo! We currently live in Bingham with our two children, Harry (9) and Ruby (5). How did you get into the events industry? It was probably a little bit unconventional really! I did a Sport Science and Management Degree at Nottingham Trent University, 20

whilst the glamourous side is seeing world class performers perform on stage, the blood sweat and tears which goes into making an event happens often gets overlooked.

and went to work for Nottingham Forest as soon as I had graduated. I had 9 really fun (and turbulent!) years in football before the opportunity to work for Liz Hobbs Group came up who were embarking on a 21 date summer tour with Madness. I’ve been lucky enough to work with some great acts including Bryan Adams, Olly Murs, Craig David, Little Mix, Paloma Faith, Rita Ora, Simple Minds, UB40, The Pretenders, Boyzone, Tony Hadley and Sir Tome Jones to name a few! There’s actually a lot of similarities between the two industries – in the main the long, unsociable hours and,

What was the first event you ever put on? The first event I ever did was whilst I was working at NFFC – a junior supporters, ‘Meet the Players’ event which I arranged during half term one year. I remember at the time how much of an achievement it was for me, however, even on such a small scale, I learned some valuable lessons. I remember after the event I was chuffed at how well it had gone when the receptionist rang me to inform me there was a parent of a child who hadn’t been invited – he proceeded to let me know in no uncertain terms how I’d ruined his sons life… I grew a thick skin pretty quickly which I’ve needed throughout my career. My first music concert was a Madness concert at Lincoln City FC – the first on the Grandslam Madness tour in 2015. It was actually really refreshing to be at an event where the attendees all

turned up to have a really enjoyable time – as opposed to football where it was the opposite! Tell us one of the funniest moments of your career? What a great Question! To be honest, there’s too many to mention. We have a really great team and have a lot of fun when putting on our events – without the amazing attitude of the team, it would be a really tough gig. I’ve seen a lot of people at our events who have over indulged and at the end of the night are trying to stumble home… We’ve also promoted concerts with Sir Tom Jones (LEGEND!), and whilst the concerts have been amazing…I haven’t envied the cleaning staff at the end of the night who’ve had to collect the bra’s and knickers dotted around the front of the stage…! What is the strangest thing a performer has ever requested? I’ve heard various stories of performers putting things in their riders, including 3 week old McDonalds & a bowl full of M&M’s with all the blue ones removed, but on the whole the artists we have worked with have been relatively low maintenance. We have worked with a few artists who have been very environmentally conscious and so the whole back stage area was a meat free zone, no dairy or leather and all the cutlery needed to be made from recycled materials.

hammering this year which has been well documented, and has had a huge impact on our business. That said it has given us the chance to take stock, and focus our attentions on developing an academy for young

people with a view to teaching, educating and developing the event staff of tomorrow. Short term, we need the industry to recover from the pandemic. We’re hopefully going to have a number of summer shows in 2021 with Olly Murs, Tom Jones and of course Ellis Mather Presents Newark Festival, and we’ve already started planning for 2022 with a number of tours with a variety of artists.

What plans do you have for the future? The industry has taken a major

Collingham and The Roman Road Circular Walk by the Newark Rambler This 5 mile, easy going, walk begins at Collingham Co-op and follows public footpaths, bridleways and byways through lovely countryside. You may see hares and other wildlife. Take care on the unmarked level crossings!

along the edge of a field a short distance to a public bridleway along the side of the A46. Go right along this and the next footpath on the right will be the Roman Road (now a grassy track which can be very muddy but)!

Take the footpath left of the Co-op and turn right down Swinderby road watching out for the signpost on the left to the COMMUNITY ORCHARD – a very pleasant spot. Turn right through the orchard, then down Pocklington Road. Cross the bridge to the left and follow the track across a large field and across a level crossing. Continue left across fields until you hit a grassy bridleway. Head right up to the road and go left until a bridleway on the right leading up to Halfway Home Dog

Follow this until you emerge on a byway. Carry straight on and join a road – again go straight on. A little way down you will see a public footpath sign pointing right. Follow the path watching out for a gap on the left leading across to the railway line. Cross the line and go along the field edge to the right. A bit along you will see a diagonal path leading to a lane. At the end of this go down The Paddocks and follow the paths leading back to the Co-op.

Roman road

rescue. Follow this, past the home, until you reach another road. Go left, past Potterhill farm, to another bridleway on the right. Take the bridleway and follow the track until just before a house. The wooden footpath sign may be hidden by trees but it points left

A few metres from the A46

Enjoy the walk and think of all those who have travelled it in the past.

alks of between 4 and 10 miles are organised mainly on Wednesdays and Sundays but occasionally on other days too. Most of the walks are within 20 miles of Newark with occasional walks further afield, for example in Derbyshire or the Lincolnshire Wolds. Our walks are taken at a leisurely pace with time to admire the scenery, the flora and the fauna. We also take a picnic to enjoy with the rest of the group. No special equipment is required, just a good pair of walking boots, a rucksack and clothing suitable for the weather conditions. And, of course, as members of The Ramblers you have access to walks throughout the country plus the satisfaction of helping maintain and preserve the

footpath network for future generations to enjoy Our members come from Newark, Southwell and the surrounding villages and many of them are walk leaders, planning and checking routes for us all to enjoy. You donʼt need to join straight away; we encourage new walkers to try up to three walks with us before joining. From time to time we arrange social events, eg quiz nights and ceilidhs and also coach trips, train trips and walking holidays. In 2022, a group of walkers will be going to

Malham for a short break. This year, to celebrate our 50th Anniversary we are planning a special month of walks in September each one in memory of members who are no longer with us. There will also be a Walking Treasure Trail around the town. We have invited a speaker from The Ramblers to our AGM in November who will talk to us about national initiatives for the organisation. This will be followed by a buffet lunch and time to socialise with members and other invited guests.

A friendly group, you can be sure of a warm welcome. Why not come and give us a try? You can find further information and a list of our current walks on our website, www.newarkramblers.org.uk. For an informal chat about our group, please telephone our Secretary on 01636 672295. You can also check out The Ramblers at www.ramblers.org.uk. 31

The Haybarn at Kneesall

A short drive out of Newark on the A616 towards Ollerton is the little Gem which is The Haybarn at Kneesall.

N

estled right in the heart of the village, this independent café is a must visit for all food lovers. My husband and I visited for breakfast on a rare Friday off and were instantly welcomed at the door and shown to a table inside. There is outside seating too, no need to worry if it’s a bit chilly as customers are welcome to help themselves to a crocheted blanket from a basket at the door. As a self-confessed coffee lover, I was excited to see that all coffees come with a double shot as standard, a perfect pick me up. I would usually go Full English for breakfast but was drawn to the Continental after eyeing it up on the next table. I was so glad I did, freshly baked croissants with a gentle dusting of icing sugar and a side of butter and locally produced raspberry jam were the centre piece of this breakfast. The breakfast also comes with a pot of thick, creamy natural yoghurt topped with local honey and a selection of fresh fruits such as lychee, fig and physalis which was a lovely surprise. The breakfast was delicious, so beautifully presented and great value for money, worth every minute of the 20-minute wait for the croissants to bake to perfection. The café also has a selection of locally grown and produced products available to buy and on Fridays they run a

Recipe Tip

Frozen berries will work in a pinch just defrost them for half an hour before baking.

Ingredients

Summer Fruits Pie Introduction

Make the most of summers berries with this delectable pie… perfect with a dollop of fresh cream!

Top Tips • If you’re time-starved, feel free to use pre-made shortcrust pastry which is generally as good as homemade, and certainly easier! • If you don’t have baking beans use cooking weights, dried lentils or rice. • If you don’t have access to a food processor simply rub the butter and flour together until it is the texture of breadcrumbs.

Method

1. Put the flour, butter, icing sugar and salt in a food processor and blitz into crumbs. Combine the yolk with 1tbsp cold water, then add to the processor and pulse until the dough comes together. Divide the dough into two, wrap in clingfilm and chill in the fridge for at least one hour or, better still, overnight. 36

2. Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas mark 5. Roll out one half of the pastry, then butter an 8” pie dish and press in the pastry topped with a sheet of baking paper and baking beans. Bake blind for 30 mins. Remove the paper and beans. Mix the berries, sugar and pour the mixture into your baked pie base. 3. Roll out the second batch of pastry and top the pie with it, trimming to fit, and using a fork to seal the edge. Use a sharp knife to create a few slits for steam to escape before brushing with the whisked egg white before topping with sugar. Bake for 30-35 minutes until crust is golden. Leave to cool as filling will be extremely hot!

(serves four) For the pastry: 225g cold unsalted butter chopped into small pieces 350g plain flour 50g icing sugar Pinch of salt 1 large egg yolk For the filling: 800g of berries such as strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherries or blueberries 100g sugar 2tbsp of cornflour ½ tsp cinnamon 1 egg white (for glazing) 1tbsp sugar (for sprinkling)

Songbirds Bring music to your life by attracting your own dawn chorus. Nature’s early-morning concert is one of the summer’s greatest pleasures, and with a litt ttlle encouragement, we can bring this dawn chorus to our front and back doors. The birds: • Robin – The robin produces a twinkling, crystal-like sound that flutters through the air. You’ll hear this little fellow all year round. • Great tit – A repetitive two-toned whistle that cuts through the air and is most prominent in early spring. • Wren – For many, the best improvised whistle of them all, with a raft of twists and twirls ending up in a rattling cacophony of noise towards the end. • Willow warbler – Best characterised for a chain of notes that lowers as it progresses, the warbler’s song has clear gaps in between notes and a powerful chirp p. • Chaffinch – Heard throughout spring and summer, the chaffinch offers a punchy, powerful array of notes that slows towards the end • Blackbird – So typical of the bird itself, the blackbird’s song features notes drawn into each other that offer a range of tones and a stylish array of chords.

42

• Song thrush – Heard throughout the year, the song

thrush makes a sound closest to those slightly shrill mobile phone ringtones… but nicer! • Goldfinch – With elegant inflections and the occasional sound of a penny whistle thrown in for good measure, a chaffinch has an eclectic song and is heard from early spring. How to attract them: Bird feeders – Unknown to many, the type of food you leave in bird feeders will directly influence the species you attract. For instance, suet balls are favourites with robins, blue tits and long-tailed tits; niger seeds are loved by greenfinches and goldfinches; starlings, robins and blackbirds will come if mealworms are on offer; while tits, finches and siskins love the fatty proteins of peanuts. • Water – Whether bathing g, play ying g in it or drinking g the stuff, a supply of fresh water, usually on a shallow plate, is one of the best ways to get birds engaged in your garden. • Plants – Edible plants, berries, shrubs and wildflowers will keep your birds hanging around for long periods. • Protection – Birds are always on the lookout for cats and other predators ready to disrupt their everyday pleasures of gliding from one branch to another, so the more space you can offer your feathered friends, the more they will relax and hang about. • Birdboxes – Ensure you’re hanging these high enough away from cats and squirrels, and in a semisheltered where birds can nest in peace.
