I know -I've seen Sandra's wreaths and they are stunning so I'm hoping mine will be too! But don't forget security this Xmas. Often around this time of year we hear the awful stories of break ins and burglaries. The UL team are fresh from a demo by Ian Bradley at Bradley Locksmiths where we learnt how frail certain locks can be & NEVER EVER leave your key in the door! (Something I have always thought made your lock safer!). If you haven't finished(?!) your Xmas shopping, Newark is open every Sunday in December with free parking or why not pop over to the Christmas market in Bruges. (See the article on pages 22 & 23). Wreathed in Smiles by Karol Watson Todd The last few years, I have started to notice how beautifully and effortlessly decorated, some homes look at Christmas, in direct opposition to my own home that can be decorated to the point of being tacky! But no more! This year I am looking forward to spending a morning at Stoke Rochford Hall on one of the wreath making workshops and taking home my own hand made (and hopefully utterly stunning) wreath to hang on my front door! Not only am I planning on a beautiful wreath, but also the 2.5 hour workshop will be a welcome opportunity to breathe, from the frantic Christmas preparations to make this Christmas absolutely perfect – I know I’m not alone in trying to achieve this!) A calm and welcome oasis in the lovely surroundings of Stoke Rochford (barely half an hour away from Newark), and a stunning wreath (or I’m claiming Sandra’s as my own!), to show for it, allowing me to honestly say “I made that” and let my family gasp in amazement that I can actually do something they didn’t even think about! Perhaps one of last year’s attendees should have the last word! “I attended one of Sandra’s Christmas wreath

making workshops last December and I can thoroughly recommend them. All the materials are provided (you just need to bring secateurs) It was really good fun, very relaxed and the tuition and support was superb. Sandra is a lovely person, very patient and good fun. My wreath was hung on my front door and was admired by everyone. Why not have a go, you won’t be disappointed!” And that’s exactly what I am going to do! Give long lasting and meaningful gifts this Christmas. The Chief Executive of Beaumond House is appealing to people of Newark and surrounding villages to help safe guard the future of the hospice by signing up to a regular giving pledge. The future of the Hospice is threatened if income does not increase by £300.000 per year. Its services currently rely on 70% charitable giving and 30% NHS. Mr Fisher said “Beaumond House belongs to the people of Newark and district and so I am appealing directly to each and every one of you to sign up to make a regular monthly donation to Beaumond House.” Beaumond House looks after around

250 people at any one time and is helping more people than ever through what can be the most difficult of times. Donating just £3 a month for a year could help us to pay for an hour of Hospice care for someone in their own home. £5.50 a month for a year would fund a day care place and £33 a month for a year could help to pay for a night of respite at Beaumond House. We also welcome legacy pledges and partner with local. “Setting up a standing order is so

simple just complete the (below) form and send it to Beaumond House and we will do the rest. Your gift will be worth even more to us if you also complete the gift aid declaration. This will mean that for every £1 you donate to us we can claim an additional 25p on your behalf direct from HMRC - it won’t cost you a penny. Give the gift of your time this Christmas Newark Community First Aid is a charity set up to provide first aid training and event cover in Newark and the surrounding area. Our objective is to provide safe, reliable and high quality care at events. The charity was set up to ensure that events could afford to have high quality first aid care whether the event was charitable, community or commercial. We do not charge for our services but we gratefully accept donations made by event organisers and the general public. In our experience is that event organisers appreciate our approach and give generous support for our charity. Given our success is rapidly increasing and our services are being used on a regular basis, our charity needs more members to help with our services. Our members are trained with in the organisation and are annually assessed to ensure a high standard of care is achieved. Two levels of first aider are used a basic first aider and an advanced first aider. Both roles with in the charity

are trained on how to use the equipment we have and give professional care in all that they do. Jonathan Burlace, Public Relations Manager said 'In the last year, our volunteers, have worked hard at providing this high quality service. In the last year, our members covered 322 events which is a increase of 50.4% year on year, and volunteered 18,354 hours in total. In this time we treated 411 casualties, ranging from minor treatment of cuts to cardiac arrest. Our service is being asked for more frequently and we are asking for more volunteers. You do not need to have any experience or qualifications as these will be provided along with additional training and your uniform. Christmas Markets with a Difference!

P&O Ferries

Lincoln Christmas Market may have once been the market to visit for all those fantastic continental style gifts, foods and crafts, but how about experiencing the real thing? We travelled to Bruges with P & O Ferries on their overnight mini cruise, leaving on a Friday evening from Hull and returning Saturday night (arriving in Hull on Sunday morning). Just enough time to feel we had been away; long enough on the ferry to feel as though it was part of the trip; and also a fabulous day wondering around Bruges, taking in the sights, sounds and aromatic smells of a authentic Christmas market. Having visited Bruges a few times, I was keen to take my 22

mum this time and as she has limited mobility, and Bruges is full of cobbled streets and is all about walking around, I hesitated only slightly about which wheelchair to hire for the trip. The ship made things very easy, and mum happily moved around the ship enjoying the various things on offer. Andy Faichney, North Sea Customer Operations Support Manager at P&O Ferries, said: “We welcome thousands of passengers with disabilities onto our North Sea ferries every year

and take great pride in ensuring that they have the most comfortable and enjoyable trip possible to Zeebrugge and Rotterdam. shop or stall to buy Christmas presents in, as the window displays were so tempting. We made our way to the main square and stopped for a ‘cherry beer’ which helped us on our way for the afternoon... decisions were a little easier afterwards! The market was every bit as lovely as the picture postcards and we picked up some

fabulous gifts, at very reasonable prices. We did decide that the Ice Rink might be a little too challenging though! A day in Bruges can be as restful or as busy as you want to make it. We found the air to be fresh, the sun to be bright, and the beer to be delicious. For something that little bit different and a mini getaway log on to the P&0 Ferries website to find out more about a mini break to Brugge and see when the special promotion can be booked and look forward to setting sail over the festive period. Turmeric – a spice for your health not just curries! In the same plant family as ginger, the turmeric root is mainly grown in India, China & Indonesia. Usually seen in the UK as a dried powder, it is deep yelloworange and used extensively in curry spice mixes or as a natural colouring. Turmeric has a mild but slightly peppery, savoury warm taste. Used in many cultures and complementary therapies across the world, turmeric has been shown to be very helpful for inflammatory or painful conditions such as arthritis. The active ingredient is curcumin & human studies have shown this to be comparable to many anti-inflammatory medications, without the gastric side effects or toxicity issues.

Curcumin is a powerful antioxidant and may be helpful in prevention of cancer & an aid in natural detoxification. Some cultures using turmeric as a common food ingredient have low incidence of cardiovascular & neurological diseases, such as Alzheimers.

Turmeric can be bought fresh, like ginger, from specialist greengrocers. It is then peeled & grated into dishes or it can be bought and used as a powdered spice. Make your own curry blends with cumin, coriander, ginger & garlic. Add to rice & pulses when cooking. Include in salad dressings, soups, casseroles and even baked goods to give a rich yellow colour & added health benefits. Do take extra care when handling any form of turmeric as it can easily stain clothing, surfaces or even your skin!

Helping older people to stay safe and well this winter The colder weather is approaching fast and the nights are drawing in, winter is just around the corner. Here at Lancaster Grange care home we aim to take the worry out of winter for many and to offer support and company to our local community throughout the coming months. We hold regular coffee mornings each first Thursday of the month (all welcome from 10.00 - 12.00am!) and a range of FREE tasty and simple to prepare Winter Recipe Cards currently available to all visitors to the home. Winter can be a beautiful time of year but it can also be hazardous and cold for older people. Here are some simple tips.... have at least one hot meal a day to keep your energy levels up; make sure you drink regularly; keep warm and wrap up even when inside; make sure your heating is working; have food in the cupboard that will keep in case the bad weather makes shopping difficult; make sure your flu jab is up to date; take care moving around, especially outside; be extra vigilant on dark nights; keep in touch with neighbours, friends and family. The consequences of poor nutrition are well known but are especially important for those people living with Dementia. With Daycare and short respite breaks also available at Lancaster Grange we are able to offer a worryfree alternative with no fuel bills to worry about or food shopping to do, whilst knowing that qualified care staff are always on hand. Situated on the edge of Fernwood we offer a warm welcome in a homely and comfortable atmosphere. 30

Christmas can also be very lonely time with many older people living alone; sometimes their families are spread around the country or even the world. This is a popular time of year to take a short break; ensuring help is on hand, plenty of company, meals are prepared and interesting activities going on in a fun & warm environment. Amanda Mitchell, the home’s Activities Coordinator and the team have been busy developing a great calendar of social activities to cater for all tastes. The tree is decorated and the turkey in the freezer, but are you ready to welcome friends and family this Christmas? Katherine Sorrell outlines some quick and easy ways to create extra space for holiday visitors.

Lounging around If you’re going to need somewhere for everyone to relax in the living room, bring in beanbags for the kids and pop cushions on top of coffee tables and benches to create a few extra TV-viewing spaces.

A bed for the night No guest room? No problem. A sofa bed, day bed or futon – or simply a longish sofa – will do the trick. A good quality airbed is a great thing to have, too. If your living room is acting as a temporary bedroom, clear space for your guests’ luggage and place a small lamp near the head of their ‘bed’ and a spare throw or blanket nearby. Use a 52

Growing Fruit Trees by Pippa Greenwood

For the ultimate in gorgeous apples, pears, plums or more, the fruit needs to be freshly picked and sun-warmed - so grow your own and make some good looking additions to your garden, even when space is limited. There’s no need to have a massive plot or an orchard to grow fruit trees‌ You can grow fruit trees in surprisingly small spaces, especially if you don’t grow them in a classic tree shape, but train them. Training them into espaliers (several sets of horizontal ‘arms’), cordons (single main stems grown at an angle) or fans (with branches trained into a fan shape) means that you can grow many varieties of apples and pears up against a suitable vertical surface such as a wall, fence or set of sturdy wires. You could also train fruits like apples to make a neat edging for a bed or border about 45cm above ground level (called ‘step-overs’). A step-over apple grows to a height of about 30cm and is trained to forms two horizontal ‘arms’, which will bear a smallish crop of fruit. Try step-overs around the edge of \RXU YHJHWDEOH SORW RU Ă RZHU bed. To make a real feature of fruit, use a tree to create a

decorative and productive arch. Buy an inexpensive bare root cordon (straight stem) or a ‘whip’ fruit tree of your favourite variety, pair it with another variety that is a suitable pollinator (check with the nursery) and plant one on each side of the arch, training them in as they grow. It will look pretty when in blossom in spring and will bear tasty fruit too. Provided you get the right rootstock (see below), you can grow fruit trees in large containers. The container needs to be big - a half-barrel at least - and have drainage holes kept clear using a few inches of broken china or ‘crocks’ at its bottom. Good quality loambased compost such as John Innes No.3 will work well, but help to keep it well aerated and free-draining by adding 2550% multi-purpose loam-free compost. It is essential to choose fruit trees on the right ‘rootstock’, as this determines the ultimate size and vigour of the tree. Apples are complicated, but as a rule, for step-overs, cordons, dwarf bushes and trees in containers try the extremely GZDUĂ€QJ 0 WKRXJK ZHDN varieties may fail in poor soil or if not well pampered. For bush, cordon, espaliers and
