Karols Korner

In this issue...

Hard to believe, that we are predicted the worst winter for several years? My roses have flowered again as I write this and I don’t know whether to frost proof my fuchsias or leave them out for a while longer! Whichever way you choose, who can forget that Christmas is just around the corner and I would love to wake up to snow on Christmas day! Are you ready and prepared? There’s a fabulous day in the Market Square, Newark on the 14th December to finish (or start!) your shopping and by keeping it local you are also helping local retailers to grow and prosper. Lets spread our cheer as locally as we can this year, remember, every £5 you spend locally, gets spent and respent in the local economy. This adds up to a huge amount (in the millions) over a year. So lets make our Christmas spending count, remember Businesses Grow when you Use Locally! Marry Christmas!

Does The Ghost Of Christmas Past Have A Future? by Kate McLelland Times are changing and it seems that many of the festive traditions that British people have enjoyed for hundreds - if not thousands – of years may not be around for much longer. Here are some Christmas customs that have either died out or evolved to suit our 21st century tastes: The holly and the ivy The practice of bringing fresh evergreen branches into our homes dates back to preChristian times and the belief that evergreen trees represented eternal life, rebirth and the coming spring. Christians later focused on the plants’ natural qualities, believing that the holly’s prickly leaves represented Christ’s crown of thorns and the red berries his spilt blood. The greenery may be gone from many houses, but it is not forgotten: modern decorations hark back to the shiny leaves and berries that once caught WKH Ă€UHOLJKW LQ RXU DQFHVWRUV¡ homes.

songs sung at the midwinter festival. They became popular in medieval times but the Puritans imposed a total ban on carol singing in the 1640s. Forbidden to perform in church, strolling musicians and singers would knock on doors hoping for food, drink or money.

into the dessert we know today. Small silver “charms were once added to the mixture: a silver coin to bring wealth to the recipient, a silver thimble for thrift, a wishbone for luck and an anchor to symbolise “safe harbour.

The Christmas Feast In past times people mainly ate beef and goose at Christmas. Turkey was introduced in the 19th century when well off, middle class families realised this large bird was the perfect size to feed a family gathering. By the beginning of the 20th century turkey had become the festive meat of choice, but the dwindling size of 21st century family gatherings may lead us back to eating smaller cuts of meat once more.

Packing the presents Once upon a time all that children could expect when Father Christmas called was a VWRFNLQJ ÀOOHG ZLWK QXWV IUXLW sweets and handmade trinkets but our desire for bigger and better gifts eventually led us to use pillowcases rather than stockings. We now spend an average of around £30 on each present, forcing us to buy large, purpose-made sacks for gifts or put them under the tree.

Christmas pudding Although the traditional Christmas pudding is still popular, there may come a time when chocolate bombes, SURĂ€WHUROHV DQG WULĂ HV VKRXOGHU out the humble pud. This rich, spicy and fruity pudding originated in the 14th century as a pre-Christmas fasting meal made out of porridge, meat and raisins, with the consistency of soup. ,QJUHGLHQWV VXFK DV Ă RXU DQG eggs were added over the years until the recipe evolved

While historical records show that over the past 100 years our festive traditions have changed more rapidly than ever before, it’s important to realise that this is just an acceleration of an evolutionary process begun in ancient times. Historians may mourn the loss of our old traditions but it’s clear that, even though some of the customs and rituals have changed, our love of Christmas itself remains just as strong as ever.

Carols on your doorstep Now it’s kids who bawl two lines of “Away in a Manger before rattling their collection tin, but bands of carollers used to roam the streets at Christmas. In the pre-Christian era carols were simply boisterous folk 6 Luxury British Hampers www.britishhamper.com

SPOTLIGHT ON

Ableworld Ableworld Newark, 1of 12 franchised Ableworld’s 24 stores across the country is now in the extremely competent new hands of Donna Wilson.

You may ask why extremely competent? Donna has had first hand experience of useful and necessary products and services after her son was born with severe special needs. Following a driving accident while pregnant, Donna brought up her son, until he passed on in November 2003, learning all the trials & tribulations of dealing with the NHS and trying to get the right equipment to help her make her sons quality of life better, at a reasonable affordable price and also make ends meet, working at a prison. Many of those must have items were only available at that time on the NHS and like many other service users, Donna struggled 8

to receive the desperately needed equipment that would make things easier for her & her son. Donna only too well understands how the cost of a life-changing product can be prohibitive and how those little (& not so little) things can make a big difference. Since taking on the franchise in October this year, Donna has invested heavily in new and exciting product ranges to bring the best and most affordable, products to the area. The ranges have expanded and now boast a Scooter & stair lift repair shop onsite as well as

other ranges not previously available. Staff & personal training is a high priority here at Ableworld, with Donna & her sister Jennifer, both going to Shrewsbury and Nantwich for training and the scooter & stair lift repairs staff attending training in Nantwich and manufacturer sites across the country. If you have ever visited a shop where poorly trained

Use Locally - Issue 20 December 2014 staff served you, you will understand the importance that Donna has placed on ensuring her staff are properly trained to advise you on the correct products. Part of the passion & ethos that Donna brings, is the absolute understanding that items must be fit for purpose. It’s a responsibility that is not taken lightly. Many items are fitted to the client, such as high rise chairs – making sure the chair fits the client, not too small so as to cause pressure sores, or too tall that you can’t touch the floor or too deep so as the back of the chair is too far away to be comfortable. Its not about profit, but about making sure that the product is right for the user, which may mean a less expensive option is the right choice for the person concerned. Service like this usually comes at a premium price, however Ableworld, as part of a franchised larger company, can achieve better discounts than many independent retailers, passing those savings on to you the customer. One of the new parts to the shop is the Scooter Surgery, as touched on above. If you use a scooter, how do you deal with any problems you might suffer with its running? Now you have the option of a quick phone call and the ailing scooter is collected and returned to your doorstep. Scooters can be collected, serviced or repaired on site and returned to the owner, a service not previously available. Repairs and servicing are available; to give you complete peace of mind and at a very competitive price. Popular products at this time of year are stair lifts and rise & recline chairs to make life easier in the home. In the winter people spend more time in their homes and so find it more useful to have a stair lift to help 10

with the difficulties of going upstairs several times a day and enable them to remain in their 2 storey home. Likewise a rise & recline chair can provide relief from trying to stand up, what could be easier than pressing a button to help you stand up? The icy weather brings its own hazards and a fall can result in a hospital stay, meaning you are less mobile over the colder winter months. Both the chair and stair lift give back some independence, and again the variety of stair lifts available ensure that you can find something to meet your needs, either straight or curved, new or reconditioned, and again that fabulous maintenance contract to ensure safety, coupled with a 24 hour call out for any breakdowns, which is unique to Ableworld. If a stair lift is on your list of priorities, then getting a quote couldn’t be simpler; an Engineer will pop out, measure up, advise you on your options and then leave your quote with you! There’s no high-pressure sales tactics and you simply call Donna to tell her which one you have chosen, - high-pressure sales & continuous callbacks simply don’t fit with the ethos and vision that Donna has for her store. And to make sure that stair lifts are within all service users reach, there is a range of reconditioned stair lifts available from £495. If you have a straight stair lift no longer in use, you can even sell it to Ableworld providing its less than 5 years old, subject to survey. The store also has the largest range of incontinence products

in the area, suiting all needs and ensures that whatever your level of requirement there is a product to match it. Other useful items are injury supports, such as knee supports, available for sports people, there are thermal supports, which provide additional warmth for arthritis sufferers, active bands, similar to those supplied by physiotherapists, to help regain arm and leg strength, and even pedal exercisers so as you can sit watching TV and exercise your legs to keep yourself as fit as possible. Pedal exercisers make great Christmas gifts too! For people needing a little extra help when moving around the house, the Strolley Trolley is a great addition, as it carries those cups of tea and sandwiches around and provides support at the same time. Other stocking fillers or useful items are the Biofreeze gel used by chiropractors, wheat & lavender neck pillows, which can be heated in the microwave and heated lap blankets as well to keep you or your loved one warm this winter. Perhaps the biggest reason to visit Ableworld is that Donna has the personal touch and a depth of knowledge from her own circumstances, combined with the buying power of a large company, ensuring that you, the customer get the best value for money and the best product for your needs, not to mention keeping your business local, and trading with an independent in the area, and if you are lucky, getting a cuddle from Ebony, her beautiful black Labrador!

Brugge Mini Cruise with

P&O Ferries

Wondering what to do with a few spare days over the festive period in the week and not wanting to spend a fortune ???

Why not book a mini cruise to Brugge with P&0 Ferries as now is the perfect time to book a trip with the 2-1 offer. For just £75.00 you and a guest can pop over from Hull to Brugge and do some Christmas Shopping, try a great Belgium beer or wander around the quaint and pretty streets discovering a really popular destination. The editor and I picked up the ferry from Hull on Monday early evening about 5.00 pm and set sail across the Channel at 7.00 pm. We left the car in 12

the overnight car park and went on as foot passengers. The dinner buffet was served in the main restaurant and the quality of food was good with a wide choice to suit all taste buds ! We decided to have a whizz on the bingo and then to bed ready for shopping the next day. The boat was slightly delayed due to the weather, but a coach was waiting to greet us at the port and dropped us both just a short distance from the main historical part of the town.

Wandering around the small streets we discovered many shops – mainly with a beer or chocolate theme ! It was difficult to decide which shop to buy Christmas presents in as the window displays were so tempting. We made our way to the main square and stopped for a ‘cherry beer’ which helped us on our way for the afternoon… Brugge is easy to walk around and apart from the shops there are many museums to visit and a lovely river trip that

takes you around the town. I think we shall both go back next year to spend some time discovering the historical sites. The atmosphere and general ease of walking around made our trip really enjoyable, we bought Christmas presents and may even pop back when the Christmas market is set up – end of November. Along with a festive Christmas market an ice rink will take centre stage so maybe skates too! A day in Brugge can be as restful or as busy as you want to make it. We found the air to be fresh, the sun to be bright, and the beer to be delicious. The cabins are functional on the ship and the buffet restaurant to have a help your self-service. Mussels and Frites are a popular choice for lunch in Brugge and looked appetizing, but we were too busy shopping to eat.

If you want to practice your French then the locals speak many languages including English. As we wandered around the town we took in all the detail of the buildings which we really interesting and quaint. The ferry departed again on Tuesday evening and we were collected back from the drop off point in a brand new coach which returned us to the ferry where we unloaded all our bags and decided on a power snooze, before going for dinner.

To sum up our trip we both relaxed, had time to catch up and enjoyed both the atmosphere and fun of being away for a few days, which was surprisingly reasonable. For our readers it is important we experience and provide feedback on our experience to ensure that we provide and can guide you in finding out more. Home & Interiors Scandinavian Christmas

Who doesn’t love Scandinavian style? It combines classic with contemporary, pretty with practical. And it’s the perfect look with which to dress up your home for Christmas

By Katherine Sorrell

decorations in bright, rustic folk style provide relief from the long hours of night and the expanses of snow. Carved wooden spoons, bowls, cups and chests, strongly coloured, woven rugs, blankets and cushions, and beautifully painted furniture in ochres, reds and yellows are the timeless tradition. Appealing as it is, there is much more to Scandinavian style than colourful rusticity, however. What we now called ‘Gustavian’ style became popular in the late 18th century, encouraged by the young King Gustav III of Sweden, under whose patronage the grandeur of Versailles and the skilled creations of master furniture-makers like Hepplewhite and Chippendale were interpreted by native craftsmen in a gentler and more restrained way, blending neo-classicism and romantic Rococo into a unique, northern European decorative style. Think symmetry, pale colours (buttermilk and Baltic blue, grey and peppermint), SDLQWHG Ă RRUERDUGV ribbons and swags, glass chandeliers, gilding, mirrors and

delicate wooden furniture with tapering legs and subtly carved details. $QRWKHU PDMRU LQĂ XHQFH a century or so later, was Swedish artist Carl Larsson and his wife, Karin. In the 1890s the couple decorated their rural cottage, Lilla HyttnĂĽs, in a unique and innovative way, combining folk and Gustavian styles with contemporary European LQĂ XHQFHV $UWV &UDIWV $UW Nouveau and Japonisme. Light and airy, pretty and functional, the look was all gingham and geraniums, bread crocks and baskets, rag rugs and sprigged china. When Carl’s watercolours of the house were published, the public response, in Sweden DQG IXUWKHU DĂ€HOG ZDV overwhelming; his books, in the early 20th century, did a great deal to popularise what we now see as the typically Scandinavian style of easygoing Gustavian, folk arts and an open-plan love of light and space. And what he started, D FHUWDLQ 6ZHGLVK Ă DW SDFN furniture giant continued. ,NHD RSHQHG LWV Ă€UVW 8. VWRUH in 1987 and then – who can forget? – in 1994 launched its Gustavian-style furniture range, accompanied by an advertising campaign that urged us all to ‘chuck out your chintz’. It sold like hot glogg, and the rest is history – now we all crave the clean-lined, bright and uncluttered look, styled with pretty colours and dashes of folk art.

In the Scandinavian countries extremes of landscape, from forests and fjords to boiling geysers and the Aurora Borealis, are all around you. ,Q ZLQWHU GD\OLJKW LV Ă HHWLQJ and keeping warm is a vital part of life. Create a Scandinavian feel this Christmas by combining folk and sophistication, cosy and minimalism. Keep it simple – too much clutter is GHÀQLWHO\ QRW D SDUW RI WKLV particular look. Your colour palette is, of course, mainly red and white, with green, brown and black for contrast, and the occasional dusting RI JOLWWHU RU DUWLÀFLDO VQRZ Natural accessories such DV WZLJV EUDQFKHV DQG ÀU cones are a great starting point, with generously sized garlands and wreaths made from woven greenery. A sprinkling of metal lanterns ZLWK à LFNHULQJ candles creates atmosphere, and a real Christmas tree

is, of course, the centrepiece (clip-on Scandi-style candles optional). In general, materials should be as natural as possible, from bark to hessian, felt to Fair Isle, emphasising all sorts of appealing textures. If you can knit, sew or otherwise make your own decorations, so much the better but, if not, there are plenty of gorgeous accessories in the shops and online created by talented craftspeople. Perfection is not UHTXLUHG VLPSO\ that appealingly homespun look. A row of knitted stockings, for example, would be just perfect, while linen sacks with

A landlord’s worst nightmare is having an empty property so surely attracting and keeping top quality tenants is of high importance. It’s all about the relationship though as good tenants take care of your property in which they live and pay their rent on time causing you very little problems. But it needs to be reciprocal as they want a landlord that will keep them happy and a happy tenant is a long term tenant which means a regular stream of income. So what can you do:Make things clear from the start Establish a good relationship from the beginning ensuring any confusion or issues are avoided in the future. Make them clear on not only the rent but the utilities that they will pay and what you expect tenants to adhere to. Be clear on whether they can smoke or have pets in the property. Respect their privacy Don’t just go and let yourself in to their property unannounced as tenants don’t take to this kindly and will be suspicious of you reasons for doing so. If you need to do a maintenance job give them notice and make it feel like their home. Property Maintenance & Complaints Keep the property functioning and don’t let maintenance jobs build up. Your tenants are more likely to be house proud if they have a home that is in ship shape. If something is broken or not working deal with it when it is reported and tell them what you are doing to resolve the problem. Don’t give a tenant a reason not to pay you your rent. Reward your tenants Yes if they are good tenants don’t take them for granted. Keep the rent competitive and think before hiking the price up as it can make more business sense to reward longer-term tenants for their loyalty with a more generous rent deal. Hold on to your good tenants for as long as possible. For more information on lettings advice or buy to let investment contact me on 01636 345045 or email chris.gillon@cpgproperty.co.uk

Driving under the influence By Michael Pace The anti drink drive laws came into being in the early 1970's. In those early days we used what looked like test tubes which changed colour if mixed with breath containing alcohol. These days there are more accurate machines used at the side of the road and at police stations. In the near future it is expected that only road-side test will be necessary. The legal limit is 35mg in breath. It is unusual though for the police to prosecute for any reading under 40mg. The police for the moment are still reliant on the police station test in order to prosecute, in the near future it is expected that only the road side test will be necessary. If a driver blows a reading at the roadside of just over 40mg and is some 30 minutes or so from a police station then, by the time he has reached a police station he is often under the limit. There has always been a problem catching and proving that drivers are under the influence of drugs. This was because of the lack of reliable testing equipment. This is all to change, testing equipment has been developed and levels set for different drugs and from 2 March 2014 a new offence of 'Drug Driving', comes into being pursuant to, The Drug Driving (Specified Limits) (England and Wales) Regulations 2014 which creates an offence under s.5A of The Road Traffic Act 1988. Sentencing guidelines are likely to mirror those for drink driving. A minimum 12month disqualification with a fine and costs on top. Some drugs are prescribable for certain conditions and they therefore come with a warning as to overuse. Medical guidance will be needed if you are prescribed one of them, before driving. No doubt in the short term the law will be tested and will take a little time to bed in before clear legal advice can be given to drivers who are being prosecuted. For any motor law queries please contact Michael Pace, Partner, Andrew & Co Solicitors, 01522 512123 michael.pace@andrew-solicitors.co.uk 32

I’m Dreaming Of A Green Christmas by Pippa Greenwood

With Christmas just around the corner, there is always plenty to do. True the garden side of things may be a little less busy than usual, but everything else seems to be going into overdrive. I love giving presents, but only when I think that the recipient will really enjoy receiving it - whether that gift is a thing of beauty or something totally practical. With gardening as one of the nation’s top pastimes, I’m sure you’ll know more than a few gardeners so here are a few ideas for things which I am sure most green Ă€QJHUHG IULHQGV ZRXOG EH delighted to receive. If you know a newish gardener or someone who has recently taken on a garden then the basic garden tools are always well received, especially if you choose good quality, sturdy ones. So think fork, spade and UDNH ² \HV WKH\ DUH GLIĂ€FXOW WR wrap but worth the effort. For anyone gripped by the Grow Your Own bug and who’d appreciate a helping hand you could give one of my ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood ‘ gift cards 38

Find out more at www.pippagreenwood.com Weeding is always an issue so a hoe is useful or for smaller spaces (such as in between plants, in gravel, between paving, in asparagus beds or to tackle weeds within planters) try the hand held red-handled weeders – I think they’re indispensable. Small but always appreciated gifts could include a few packets of vegetable seeds. Although many garden centres are currently crammed full of tinselly, twinkly items for the festive season, most already have a good number of seeds in stock. Choose some particularly scrumptious varieties of vegetables or for those who are more concerned about looks than taste, how about some à DPER\DQWO\ FRORXUIXO à RZHUV to brighten up their garden? If you want to spend a bit more and the person loves growing

things from seed, a heated propagator makes a fantastic gift. With tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and many of the fancier ornamentals needing to be sown soon, it’ll be a gift put to use straight away. Gardening gloves too are something that any gardener can always have more of. Particularly useful are some of the gauntlet style gloves which are perfect if you have to tackle a pruning job on a thorny plant or one with really rough or sharp leaves. Totally practical, but gauntlets can make even a really unpleasant job so much easier – I even used mine to harvest holly for decorating the house last Christmas. Alternatively, there are many lower-priced types of gloves available with JULSSLQJ SDGV RQ WKH ÀQJHUV RU with leather toughened strips across the knuckles to make sure that your hands don’t get too much of a beating while you are out in the garden. BRITTEN’S CEREMONY OF CAROLS OP 28 (1942) BENJAMIN BRITTEN

Britten composed A Ceremony of Carols during his perilous voyage home from America in the spring of 1942 and the first two performances were given the following Christmas in Norwich and then London.

A CEREMONY OF CAROLS

JOIN US FOR A MAGICAL EXPERIENCE THIS CHRISTMAS

Britten conceived the performance as a ‘ceremony’, that is a liturgical performance in its own right with the treble voices processing in and out singing the medieval ‘Hodie’ antiphon from the Vespers of Christmas Eve. The central ‘Interlude’ for harp, the instrument which accompanies throughout rather than the more conventional organ or piano, is loosely based on the same chant, but also employs the pentatonic scale, so reminiscent of the sound of the Indonesian gamelan orchestra, which Britten had heard for the first time in the USA. Bell-sounds are also employed in this and several other movements, including Wolcum Yole and Deo Gracias, a technique which Britten put to such effective use later in Peter Grimes. The Ceremony manages to deploy a wide range of texture and colour, despite the relatively meagre resources of three treble parts and harp, by incorporating solos, a duet and a number of exciting canons between the parts. 42

And Another Thing... Christmas Shopping by Tom Hughes It was that time of year again, when the late autumnal chill turns to a sharper, wintery shiver. “Tom?â€? “Mmmm?â€? “What are you doing this Thursday? “I’m busy.â€? “Doing what.â€? “Er, I have to creosote the dog.â€? “Don’t be silly and stop hiding behind the paper. On Thursday we need to go ‌ late night Christmas shopping.â€? “Listen, I hate Christmas, and I hate Christmas shopping. I’m like the condemned man shopping for rope. I’m a grown adult, I can make my own FKRLFHV LQ OLIH VR SOHDVH Ă€QG someone else, and that my GHDU LV P\ Ă€QDO Ă€QDO ZRUG Âľ The Trafford Centre car park was heaving as we bumped the Mondeo up onto the pavement and joined the happy throngs. As soon as we entered, Sarah headed straight for the Christmas decorations. “Now Tom, do you think we need another Santa to stand in the corner of the front room?â€? I turned around and stared at the rosy cheeks and glassy

eyes of the little fat man with the white beard. I felt like punching him. But instead I just pulled at his realistic whiskers. “Er, do you mind?â€? “I’m most terribly sorry,â€? I immediately apologised as the chubby old chap backed away from me, his furious wife in tow. “Tom, what have I told you about not wearing your new glasses? Look, this is going to be a long night so let’s just get on with it.â€? “I’ll tell you what - let’s split up. You give me a list and we can Ă€QLVK LQ KDOI WKH WLPH Âľ Sarah’s eyes narrowed as she ripped her brown envelope in half. “Ok ... but don’t just go to Waterstones and browse for hours.â€? “As if.â€? 7KH Ă€OP VHFWLRQ DW :DWHUVWRQHV was bigger than I remembered, with huge glossy tomes full of VFHQHV IURP P\ IDYRXULWH Ă€OPV One Spielberg book was as weighty as it was marvellous. me, our differences forgotten as I held up my list. A moment of male bonding amongst the manic dash for presents. Then, as I replaced the Spielberg book, he gave me a strange, conspiratorial wink. The next destination was the perfume counter in Debenhams. A scary looking woman with cartoon eyebrows blocked my path. “Paco Rabanne?â€? “No, Tom Hughes, but pleased to meet you.â€? “The Hugo Boss is on offer. “No chance. “Why not? “Because he dressed the Nazis.

“Is that it?

Then I opened my present - it was the Spielberg book.

“Well, I was distracted, the old man with the beard ....

“How did you know I wanted this?

Sarah, half standing, slurped her coffee.

“I just had a feeling. The doorbell rang. It was Uncle Barry looking for his bottle of catnip. Everyone ran out to greet him. From the hall I heard a rousing “Merry Christmas! Now alone, I glanced over at the corner of the room, where sat a chubby, red faced Santa. So Sarah had bought one after all? And do you know something? If I didn’t know better, and if I wasn’t on my third Bucks Fizz, I could have sworn he winked at me....

“Right, make yourself useful. Carry these, time’s marching on, let’s go.

“Tom, I don’t think we have time to discuss the ethics of Christmas - just go and buy something, anything.â€? Ragdale Hall Spa Experience What do you do on a dark and miserable winters day? Well if you want to spoil yourself and indulge in a truly wonderful day then a Spa Day Experience at Ragdale Hall is truly full of relaxation and selfindulgence . On arriving at the car park on an dark and wet winter morning with strong winds and wrapped up in warm gloves, hat, thick coat and various layers of clothes the doors opened to Ragdale and the cold wet weather stayed behind me. I was greeted by a very smartly dressed gentlemen, warm glowing log fires and luxurious soft

furnishings. As I started to unwrap myself in the charming conservatory it felt like an oasis of calm and I started to relax. Ragdale Hall is set in its own grounds just off the A46 and centrally located just 20 minutes from Newark so within easy reach. The indulgence day includes lunch, and use of the various rooms to calm and relax both

you body and mind. The Hall has two main pools one inside and one small pool, which is both inside and trails outside, you can start to feel you whole body relax from you head to your toes. We started in the candle calming room, which included a small pool allowing all our senses to fully relax. How would I make it until teatime, 8 hours of relaxation? The relaxation rooms all have a different function and graduate in temperature and for me the day of relaxation was more than enjoyable it was heavenly. It is hard to say which room I enjoyed the most as each room had a different effect, but the central hot steam room really

helped relax my muscles and cleared by chest from a recent cold. How often do we stop and relax and fully unwind allowing both our mind and body to recover from the stressful day-to-day working week. The whole experience at Ragdale Hall really felt like both my mind and body had not only had a rest, but I felt revived and batteries re-charged. The Spa was spotless the hospitality excellent and the lunchtime service wonderful. Being wheat and gluten free there was plenty for me to choose from and all delightful including very fresh crunchy salads, tasty desserts and a variety of main courses served buffet style. The Dining Room was decorated in a Country house theme with beautiful curtains and lovely fixtures and fittings. I had heard about Radgale Hall and wondered if it would meet my expectations as a seasonal spa goer and I have to say that I would go again, but stay over

night so that I could enjoy a second day of wonderful relaxation, exacaping from the world and the emails! If you are looking for a treat or to treat someone then a day at Ragdale Hall is a perfect gift and once you have been you will be wanting to book your second visit. I had a treatment mid afternoon which included a back massage and facial with

my favourite declor products and have to say the pamper part of the day was just as enjoyable as the relaxation and I shall be back to discover the rest of Ragdale Hall including the gym.

Using Christmas Money Gifts to Start a Savings Pot money gifts this Christmas?

Would you rather give and receive money at Christmas, or do you prefer traditional gifts? People give money as a gift for various reasons. Maybe they’re not sure of the recipient’s taste, or particularly in the case of teenagers, think they might prefer to spend the money on something of their own choosing. Christmas is an ideal opportunity to start a small savings pot for a friend or family member, using money that they might otherwise spend frivolously, or on everyday expenses such as food and petrol. It shows thought and consideration and has the potential to grow over the years. It could provide funds towards a summer holiday, a new car, or something long-term. Using the same reasoning it’s in your own best interests to save the Christmas money gifts you receive, rather than put them to one side to be swallowed up by everyday needs. So what are the best options for starting a savings pot for a loved one, or saving your 54

Tax-free savings are the obvious choice The old cash ISAs have now been replaced by NISAs (new ISA), and anyone over the age of 16 can deposit a maximum of £15,000 HDFK \HDU 7KLV LV D VLJQLÀFDQW increase on the old cash limit of £5,600 although the interest rates may be lower, but this type of savings account is still the best option for easy access. The Junior ISA is available to under-18s but can only be opened by parents or legal guardians, so if you’re giving money to a member of your extended family or a friend’s child, you’ll need to physically give them the money to pay in. Each year from 6th April, you can open a new NISA with the same limit, so this is a great way to save long-term too. For those looking for an investment rather than cash savings, Stocks and Shares NISAs are also available. Regular savings accounts As the name suggests, you’ll need to drip-feed these accounts on a monthly basis. Regular savers generally offer a much better interest rate than standard savings accounts, but tax may be payable on the interest depending on your circumstances.

By Ann Haldon

Interest rates of around 6% are not unheard of, and some accounts may even beat the NISA for interest. Banks often offer regular savings accounts as a promotional tool, however, in the hope that you will take up some of their other products once you’re a customer. Saving ad-hoc Not everyone is able to save on a regular basis, but a separate place to put spare cash as and when you get it is very useful. Standard savings accounts usually run alongside current accounts, making it easy to either pay in money directly or transfer it from the current account. The Mason jar savings method Often started on the 1st January each year, this involves VDYLQJ … WKH ÀUVW ZHHN … LQ week two, and so on throughout the year. Although there’ll be no interest, it’s surprising how motivating it can be to literally see your money grow, and you’re still saving for a purpose rather than frittering it away. So if you are offering money gifts for Christmas this year, it’s worthwhile giving a little more thought to how they are offered. On the other side of the coin, receiving money for Christmas could provide you with the start of a useful nest-egg. https://www.gov.uk/juniorindividual-savings-accounts/ opening-an-account http://www.moneysavingexpert. com/savings/junior-isa http://frugalbeautiful.com/blog/ mason-jar-money-method-start1-save-1300-year/

DIY tax return As the end of the year draws closer many people’s thoughts turn to the completion of their tax returns, writes Mary Patterson of Duncan & Toplis Chartered Accountants. The deadline for electronic submission of personal returns for the tax year ended 5 April 2014 is 31 January 2015. Failure to submit your return by this deadline would result in a penalty of at least £100. Many taxpayers continue to submit their own returns rather than use the services of a Chartered Accountant. My top five tips for DIY tax returns are: 1. Give yourself plenty of time. There are a very large number of people who leave submission of their tax return until the last day risking a

penalty if something out of the ordinary happens e.g. loss of internet. The tax will be the same regardless of when your return is submitted. 2. Pay later. If your tax liability is less than £3,000 and you have income subject to PAYE, submit your return electronically before 31 December so the 2013/14 tax owing is collected through your 2015/16 PAYE coding instead of it having to be paid by 31 January 2015. 3. Have all your paperwork ready. This may include forms P60 for employment/pension income, forms P11D for employment benefits, details of interest and dividends received etc. HM Revenue & Customs will check much of this information against information it already holds to

check you have completed your return correctly. 4. Make your claim. Ensure you claim all allowances and reliefs available. These might include pension payments, work related expenses, charitable donations and certain interest costs. 5. Take advice. If the prospect of completing your own return seems too much, seek professional advice from a Chartered Accountant as soon as possible to ensure there is time to meet the 31 January deadline. The tax experts at Duncan & Toplis offer a wide range of tax return preparation solutions to suit all taxpayers. For more information visit www.duntop.co.uk

The Better Life Here’s Looking At Yule, Kid

Even though we’ve had it planned for months, Christmas is always a magical time. Our decorations go up late - sometime between the Winter Solstice and Christmas Eve - apart from the wreath that Anne makes from anything seasonal in the garden or the woods. It’s a Heath Robinson affair with holly, hebe, laurel, pinecones, acorns, or anything else we see on our travels. (One year it included a little plastic helicopter, until Anne made me take it off.) In lieu of an indoor tree, I’ve started hanging baubles on the silver birch in the garden. We’ll skip the village carol service - you may recall ‘Carolgate’, where we ended up sitting in the pulpit due to a scarcity of seats - but we’re certainly not of the “Bah! Humbug! brigade. (A bar of chocolate would be a different matter altogether) I know I’ll wake up early on the 58

big day like an excitable child. We’ll begin with the ceremonial unwrapping of the cat’s present, accompanied by tea. After that it’s a small present each, quite possibly swapping packets of heritage seeds, and then off to the beach. If the tides are with us we’ll hunt beach glass for that mosaic we’ve been saving up for, along with any weathered crockery pieces. After a bracing walk across the sand, it’s back home for festive (cinnamon) porridge and present time again. This year I’ll surprise Anne with a new addition to her charm bracelet - an Irish thruppenny bit, sporting a hare. It’s nostalgic recycling, as it was once a part of my boyhood coin collection. Both of us have a thing for hares.

work (I think we all realise that Anne will probably need to rescue it). Similarly, the veg is either homegrown or produced in the area. We’ve skipped festive crackers so that I can read from a list of jokes I wrote and couldn’t sell. For example: This year, due to cutback, Father Christmas is only making ‘Made in China’ stickers.

We’ve gone back down the sloe gin route this year, after I promised not to say that it tastes like medicine again (don’t worry, she never reads these columns until the following month). In fact, this year it’s a Better Life Christmas altogether. Anne’s chicken is locally sourced, while my nutroast is my own

In the evening there’ll be cards or a Scrabble tournament, as we watch the Yule log burning and argue over whether you’re allowed to put down ‘zo’ if you can’t say what it is. Then, after victory and defeat, we’ll raise a glass of sloe gin by candlelight and start thinking about the Boxing Day garden tidy-up. Cheers!

The eagerly awaited Christmas pud is Anne’s pet project; she’s been feeding it with a monthly sup of brandy since ODVW 'HFHPEHU VR LW¡OO GHĂ€QLWHO\ Ă DPEp 6KH KDV DOVR SURPLVHG icecream (we got the machine cheaply through an ad in the local paper) using some blackberries from the freezer. And Anne’s big present? Well, in the past we’ve had a fox, bats, a toad, shrews, moles and at the very least a hedgehog poo in the front garden, so I thought it’d be fun to capture some evidence. The new wildlife camera can take pictures in daylight or at nighttime, so at the very least we’ll see just how active the cat is nowadays.

Future Proofing your bathroom

Having your bathroom changed around so that you can bathe in comfort and safety is what “future proofing” it is all about. For example if a client is struggling to get into and out of the bath, AHM have found that the key to a good bathroom redesign and install is to listen carefully to how their clients want to use the bathroom now and then how things might change in the future. To accommodate their needs a client may want a full bathroom refurbishment or they may want to keep costs down by reusing some of the existing bathing facilities such as the existing tiling and shower mixer above the bath and then only change one or two bathroom items, such as the bath and curtain, and replacing it with a bath sized shower tray and screen. As another example if there two of you, one needing a shower cubicle and the other wanting a deep bath soak, a good solution is a walk in bath, which can be used as both a step in accessible shower system, but when the bath door is closed and clamp sealed it turns back into a bath! You may be wanting completely level walk in shower so that you don’t trip, or it can be easily accessed by wheelchair. Whatever the requirement , walk in shower, walk in bath or a wet room, AHM have been providing bathing solutions to clients at affordable prices for over 16 years. We are a both a local and friendly family run business who care about their clients and their homes. To see what our customers say look at our website on www.ahminstalltions.co.uk . Highlights include a tour to the Scottish Highlands which incorporates a visit to the fabulous Kelpies – two water bourne horses heads which stand over 30 metres tall are the biggest equine sculptures in the world. There is also an 8 day visit to Italy based at Lake Como and a ‘Wartime Weekend’ in Kent which includes a fabulous 1940’s day aboard the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway.
