Use Locally Meets…

Rose Haydock Biomechanics and Sports Massage

Where did you grow up? I grew up in a small village called Rolleston between Newark and Southwell, so I have always been in the local area. There really isn’t a huge amount to do there with just a church and a pub, so I used to spend a lot of time playing outside making dens and tree houses with the other kids in the village. If I wasn’t doing that I would be at the stables with my horse, which has always been a passion of mine. Luckily this particular area is quite ‘horsey’ so it meant I could jump on my bike to get to the local riding school where we kept my first pony. What was your favourite lesson in school? I loved Drama while I was in school, so much so that I took it on to A Level. I used to really enjoy the creative side of the subject as it really allowed me to learn myself. Being a teenager is hard work and I found it was a great release. Although performing arts wasn’t something I particularly wanted to pursue into further education, I always looked forward to that class. I also later found quite a keen interest for psychology when I did my A Levels, how the human brain works is absolutely fascinating to me. What did you want to be when you grew up? Amazingly when I was in junior school I desperately wanted to be a dentist for many years!! I think this must have been before I fell into a door frame while playing with my brother at home and snapped one of my front teeth….needless to say my mother was not impressed at having to schedule multiple trips in to see the dentist and have my smile restored. This was rather an off putting experience, and therefore probably the point where my dentist dreams faded away. Following that I really struggled in which direction I would go, but one thing I was quite certain of was that I would never want to work with horses. I know first hand the amount of work just having your own is, let alone spending all day everyday battling the elements to care for them. This lack of direction meant that although I did my A Levels, university wasn’t really something I was interested in, so found a job straight out of school. What was your first job? My first job was at our local pub, waiting on and helping out with the pots in the kitchen. I wouldn’t 8

have believed at that point that our local, The Crown, as it was known then, would be somewhere I spent quite so many years. But over the time I did spend there on and off I grew great friendships with the locals, and had many a laugh. However my first proper job I had after finishing school took me over to Mansfield working for a TV Aerial company in the service department. This entailed allocating jobs and liaising with the engineers who were based all over the country, also following up on quotations and arranging jobs. It was quite a baptism by fire as I went straight in working on the phone, which was something completely new, but what a fantastic life skill to learn straight out of school. What has been your biggest achievement? My biggest achievement has to be my business. I started up in 2014, and still going strong. My clients are fantastic and they bring me so much joy and job satisfaction. There is no better feeling than finishing a busy day or week knowing that you have really made a positive impact on so many people’s lives! I am forever grateful that I have got through the pandemic, because without this job, I really have no idea what I would do! What actually is Biomechanics? Biomechanics is the study of movement – it just sounds much more complex!! So, that is applied to work by working with movement patterns, good and not so, to help ‘normalise’ movement and improve function. So that might be helping someone with a sore shoulder who cannot reach up to a top shelf, unpick the reasons of that restriction and work to reduce pain and restore range of movement. Sounds simple right? What is your most favourite part of your job? This really does link back to the previous question about my biggest achievement, because what better way to finish a day at work and go home knowing that you have improved someone’s life. Whether they have come in with a sore shoulder or hip and your treatment has reduced the pain so much that they can now sleep properly, or someone who comes on a regular basis for routine maintenance and just feels better from a hands on treatment and a good chat! I really meet some interesting people, and that in turn means I learn all sorts on a day-to-day basis! Have you ever met anyone famous? I have met some top riders over the years, such as Tim Stockdale and William Fox-Pitt. However I feel that unless you’re in the horsey game, those names might not mean so much to you!! If you ever eat out locally where is your favourite place to go? Which meal are we going for….!! I am quite a foodie (which is why I exercise). So, for breakfast, I think it has to be Balmforth & Co. on Kirk Gate

in town. They do a fantastic fry up, and I LOVE a good coffee! At lunch I am a sucker for a CBM panini at Strays on Middle Gate, their fridge biscuit is also

second to none! Then dinner has to be Koinonia in St Marks Place, their food has the most amazing flavours, and the service is fantastic. Describe your perfect weekend? I think I just had it! I am an early riser, which doesn’t phase me at all, so to start my day I roll out of bed and down to see my horse, Rommy. There is something immensely satisfying about being up early and having got him mucked out and sorted before the day starts. Then off to Parkrun at Sconce Park in Newark. This week I was volunteering, but I run regularly too. Parkrun is so friendly and really is a fantastic event, and for anyone wanting to find a reason to go for a walk, joining us at 9am on a Saturday is the perfect way to do it. Parkrun is ALWAYS followed by a coffee, and Rumbles do a great one. There has to be some incentive to get out of bed on a Saturday right?! Anyway, I am a pretty sociable person and I love to spend time with my friends, so this weekend just gone we had some mates come over with their dogs, and my friends and I went for a run both Saturday and Sunday, along with a dog walk or 2 chucked in for good luck, lots of great food, drinks and all the laughs. I am as up for going out into town as I am for staying in with friends, but can you beat having a great meal at home to then snuggle up in front of the roaring fire to plan your next group holiday! It is a shame that all these nice things have to end, but when you have a job you love, Monday is never a chore! What future plans do you have for your business? Well…..I have survived COVID, which is purely down to the ongoing support from my clients. Without them I wouldn’t have a business, so thank you to all of you! I am currently looking into CPD to get booked in, but in the mean time I will just continue to provide the best possible service for my clients. Farndon Circular – 3 miles This short, local walk begins in the riverside picnic area at Farndon. It’s an easy, flat walk suitable for everyone.

Farndon is a lovely village situated on the southern side of the River Trent where there was at one time a ferry across the river. Crossing the grassy area, and going away from the river, take a path towards houses, pass by a brand new house and continue on the path that leads through a meadow and onto a gravel track towards Newark. At a junction with a tarmac track, turn right and go as far as the mini roundabout and then left walking between houses left and right. This road leads to a track with hedges on both sides to begin with and then a garden on the left and an old mill building on the right. At the end of the path turn sharp left and go through a clapper gate (clapper gates are only found on the river Trent). The route takes you

10

This section of the river twists and turns and the power station seems at first to be in one direction and then in another. Very often walkers spot swans and herons on the river as well as pleasure boats. Fishermen line the banks, especially in the area near to the weir. During the summer, skylarks can be seen and heard too.

through a private garden so please keep to the designated path with the river on your right hand side. Passing through another clapper gate you will find yourself on the riverside path which leads all the way back to Farndon passing through several more clapper gates.

As you approach the village, there is a nature reserve and then a marina on your left hand side. The reserve is looked after by local residents who have planted wild flowers and are developing the area to attract more wildlife. Cross over the footbridge to get back to the picnic area and look out for a couple of house boats moored on the opposite bank.

The Heart of the Matter Signs to look out for that you may be having a heart attack.

It’s true to say that where heart attacks are concerned, survival rates have never been higher in the UK. What’s more, the 1.4million Brits who have come back from cardiac arrest are the best evidence that good detection and accomplished care, combined, mean life can go back to being somewhere close to normal even after suffering a medical emergency that most would name as the most terrifying of their lives. What is a heart attack? Firstly, to properly define a heart attack, it is when your blood-pumping organ goes into cardiac arrest. Blood, which carries oxygen to the heart, is unable to make its way through the coronary artery. In most cases this is caused by the build-up of cholesterol and fatty matter in the arteries. While blood vessels in other parts of the heart may

increase in size in order to make up for the shortfall, the blockage can form into a blood clot leaving that part of the heart starved of oxygen and unable to function. What are the symptoms? Symptoms will vary between men and women, and it is thought that women display a greater range of these and they are more easily detectable, though many are familiar across both sexes. These include: • Chest pain and discomfort. This begins in the centre of the chest and will feel like pain or indigestion. The sensation can come and go, or it might be constant. • Spreading pain. Aching and physical distress may well spread to arms, neck, back and even the jaw. • Nausea. Additionally, a feeling of nausea, sickness, dizziness and confusion may come on. • Thirst. Many people experiencing the

12 | Please mention Use Locally when responding to adverts

symptoms of a heart attack complain of a raging thirst. • Panic. The variety of symptoms outlined above will make the body go into panic mode, though the most important thing is to remain calm and seek urgent help. Treatment In the first instance, anyone fearing they are showing signs of having a heart attack should phone for an ambulance. The next step, if alone, is to ask a friend or relative to come over to sit with you until professional help arrives. Under no circumstances should you attempt to drive yourself to hospital. The aftermath Many people take the shock of cardiac arrest as a solemn indication that old habits and lifestyle choices need to be changed; and a good proportion actually end up healthier after cardiac arrest than they were before the incident.

Tech Trends For 2022 Six tech trends that will come to the fore in 2022 – are you ready?! ONE - Affective AI/Affective Computing - Whether you’re aware of its impact on our daily lives or not, Artificial Intelligence is all around us and in many different forms, from e-commerce to social media, healthcare, wellbeing and consumer habits. Yet Affective AI may be set to take things a few steps further. This leans on emotional or facial data that works its way through deep-learning algorithms to calculate when you are happy or sad. It then delivers media, entertainment and content that can counteract, empathise with or even raise your mood. TWO - 5G - Already one of the most talked about advancements ever, rapid connectivity is on its way with 5G allowing much greater data relay due to the frequency of radio waves being higher. For example, an HD movie that previously took seven minutes to download to your device will now take six… seconds! It means the average person is set to save over 24 hours of download time per month. THREE - Internet anywhere on Earth - Even in 2021 there are peculiar streets, alcoves or parts of the house that just won’t pick up adequate internet signal. Well, Elon Musk, Amazon and a few others have a plan to rid the spectre of poor signal

forever, and things are set to accelerate in 2022. Putting additional satellites in space – Musk’s SpaceX is proposing 40,000, Amazon over 3,000, plus 600 from OneWeb – means incredible connectivity for anyone, anywhere. FOUR - Smart Homes/ Connected Homes - We may already be used to our grandparents asking Alexa to tell the next-door neighbour to leave them alone, but this is just

the beginning for algorithms doing our tasks for us in the home. The next step is increased reliance on functionalities from inanimate devices. So that could be, for instance, your home detecting temperatures dropping or rising and adjusting accordingly, whilst simultaneously making coffee and starting up the RoboVac. FIVE - Cryptocurrency We’ve all read a lot about

16 | Please mention Use Locally when responding to adverts

cryptocurrencies over the last few years, perhaps without fully understanding what it all means. Yet the soft launch of this digital coin mechanism – an intentional gradual process to prove that the technology worked – is now giving way to a more accelerated, mass-market approach, where advancements in 2022 and the growing invitation for ‘everyday folk’ to invest in these markets. SIX - Blockchain - Similar to cryptocurrency and something else people ‘in the know’ are espousing as the next thing that will revolutionise industry and commerce, the main advantage of blockchain is in its utilisation of a digital ledger which stores information in various places, essentially disabling forgery and fakery. Expect to be hearing a lot more about it in 2022.

Top Tip

Decorated biscuits will last several days on a tree or up to a week in an airtight container.

Ingredients

ing gredientss into. Miix until a workable dough forms. Once cooled, wrap the dough in cling film and place in the fridge for at least one hour to chill.

For the biscuits 350g plain flour – plus extra for rolling 200g butter 175g dark brown sugar 1tbsp golden syrup 1tsp bicarbonate of soda 1 large egg ½tsp ground cinnamon ½tsp ground nutmeg ½tsp ground ginger For the decoration 100g white chocolate (melted) OR 100g icing sugar Sprinkles or silver baubles

2. Preheat the oven to 190°C, fan 170°C, gas mark 5 and line two baking sheets with baking paper. Meanwhile, roll out the biscuit dough onto a lightly floured surface to around ½cm thick and cut out your biscuits using festive shapes of choice. Reroll leftover dough and cut until you have none left. Bake for 10-12 minutes until a golden brown.

3. Once cooled, preferably on wire racks, place either melted chocolate or icing sugar – that has been mixed with water to form a thick paste – into a piping bag and use to decorate the biscuits, adding baubles and other decorations while the icing is still wet. Let dry completely before hanging.

Spiced Festive Biscuits Introduction

Rustle up a little festive cheer with these delectable and delicately spiced biscuits, ideal for hanging g on your tree or just for brightening up your tea break.

Top Tips

• Turn your biscuits into tree decorations by making a hole into each one before baking, using a skewer then thread through ribbon once cooled. • This dough can be made ahead by placing in the freezer after having been wrapped in cling film to chill. Simply defrost and roll out to bake. • Pre-made icing or chocolate that is ready-to-melt in a tube is a great option for those who feel less confident using a piping bag.

Method

1. Gently warm the butter, sugar and golden syrup over a low heat until it has melted. Combine the dry ingredients in a large bowl making a well in the centre to pour the wet

Food Review by Leisa Pickles HHHHH

GRAIN @No1

This month we kept it really local and headed into Newark Town Centre to sample a new café which only opened in August. Grain @No1 is located at No1 Castle Gate formerly Castle Gate Antiques

T

he building itself dates to Georgian times and remains a furniture store with four floors of antiques and various items from local artists. The café in situated on the ground floor and occupies most of the space. The area itself is spacious with lots of unique pieces of furniture where you can sit and take in the atmosphere. This is exactly what we did when we visited on a Saturday afternoon for coffee and cake and a quick scan through the papers. We opted for a Cafetiere of coffee for two accompanied by two rather generous portions of yummy cake. The Café is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10:00 serving a range of light bites and hot and cold drinks. The menu is 99.9% plant based with an exception being made for the rather delicious cheese scones. When sitting on one of the squishy sofas you will notice that all items around you are for sale. A brilliant way to

has a very different look and feel. Grain No.1 has lots of plans to run events and “Meet the Maker” style evenings so keep a look out for future diary dates.

present the items and hence why Grain No.1 refers to itself a lifestyle store. This place is a place of discovery and I would strongly urge you to pay them a visit. Start with coffee and cake then explore the whole building and all the unique items within it, each room and area of the building

So Over The Oven

The home oven has been a staple of kitchens up and down for countless decades, though in recent times these huge, clunking bastions of heat have perhaps become the home’s main source of chagrin when it comes to having to clean, spray and scrub away caked-in, burnt on, grease-laden messes from inside. It’s reassuring then that in an era of rapid kitchen advancements, there are some adequate alternatives to the slow, sometimes clumsy conventional oven.

• AIR FRYERS - Air fryers are, essentially, mini-ovens that work by using an electrical element generating heat. This is then circulated around the container, cooking food from the outside in. It means fried food can still have that satisfying crunch, without all the nastiness of oil. Indeed, air fryers use up to 80% less fat, and users can enjoy much shortened cooking times, usually by about a third, thanks to the smaller space and more concentrated cooking process. Best for price: Instant Vortex Air Fryer, from around £70 Best for quality: Ninja Foodi Maxi Health Grill & Air Fryer, from around £275 • HALOGEN OVENS Halogen ovens are typically bigger in size and use light to cook food. The halogen bulb emits a red and an infrared light. The red light can be seen by the naked eye, the infrared radiant light cannot. Food is placed in a durable glass cooking bowl, with the heat from the halogen bulb coming from above. Within is a circulating fan which ensures that heat is kept moving and that, in turn, guarantees that the food is cooked. 36 | Please mention Use Locally when responding to adverts

Best for price: Cookworks Digital Halogen Oven, from around £35

Air-fryers and halogens as practical alternatives to the oven.

Best for quality: Cooks Professional Halogen Oven Rotisserie, from around £120 HOW THEY COMPARE TO CONVENTIONAL OVENS Both air fryers and halogen ovens are smaller than conventional ovens. They use far less oil and energy than conventional ovens, cook food quicker, and price-wise are much more affordable. You’ll also find they’re able to handle everything from full-on roasts to chips and vegetables, and in the case of the halogen, even pizza or a perfectly cooked slice of toast. However, space is an issue, and if cooking for more than two people – even when factoring in additional shelves that can be added to halogens – you may struggle to cook everything in one go. Finally, as far as cleaning goes, the days of sticking your head inside a big oven with a toxic spray cleaner, are gone. Halogen ovens have a self-cleaning mode, and while an air fryer should be wiped clean on each use, both are easy to put in the sink for general washing with a sponge or cloth.

Greenfingers…

The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about getting our youngsters involved in gardening projects. I started gardening when I was nine or ten. I made a little greenhouse, tidied edges, mowed the lawn and sowed seeds, which then came up. When I had that little bit of success, it emboldened me to take cuttings and do more, and it all went on from there. To be honest I was obsessed with all things nature - frogs, toads, insects… and the garden is the nearest bit of natural history to us, so I always felt comfortable there and I still do, although I’m not sure the young generation have quite the same connection with the outdoors. In recent years I’ve worked with the Royal Horticultural Society in campaigns for school gard deniing, and d we’’ve had over 30,000 schools involved. Particularly at primary level if we can, literally, sow the seed when

38

children are youn ng, get them connected with the earth rather than disconnecte ed and fearful, it will mean we are investing in the future custtodians of the landscape. To me e, it’s vitally important we passs on our joy and knowledge. When I was a boy y, Percy Thrower presented a programme called Gardening Club on a Friday nightt – this was way be efore Gardener’s World d. He, along with a junior schooltea acher of mine, Harry Rhodes – who used to sell cacti at the churcch bazaar – were great inspirations. Indeed, my first plants came from Harry. Before he died, he e saw me building a career,, and one of life’s great delights wa as knowing that Harry witnessed this little lad he had encourage ed to garden getting on, and doing alright. It was an unusual thing for a small boy to be interestted in, therefore when you see a young gardener sh howiing a keen interestt, you always want to fa an the flame. I’m now doing what Percy and Mr Rhodes did. Of course as you get older, the way you use a garrden changes. Just as when I wa as a boy it was a place of discovery y and play, now it’s more a thing of art, beauty and quiet contem mplation.

What undoubtedly links my present self with that nine-yearold version of me, is stimulation, and that has never changed in all the years I’ve spent outdoors planting this, trimming that. And that’s what’s there for the younger generation. That’s why I feel we should do our utmost to engage young people in the glory of our gardens and outside spaces. With all the other distractions they have nowadays, it feels more importtantt than ever.
