growers find outlets for their excess crop, it also provided families with delicious ingredients while teaching younger generations about how food is grown.” Miles Harriman who lives in Winthorpe is one of the growers who contributes to the project, he said: “When I heard about the scheme, I was really excited to get involved. It gives people the opportunity to try vegetables they would never

Community News Stubton collects Best Kept Village award

Top villages in this year's South Kesteven District Council Best Kept Village competition have been presented with commemorative certificates and winners' golden litter bins. Stubton received a golden bin as winner of the small village category which covers villages with 100-500 residents. Councillor Rosemary Trollope-Bellew presented the award to Stubton Parish Council Chair Martin Davis alongside Steffie Shields, chair of the Lincolnshire Gardens Trust, which helped with final judging. SKDC is now offering to share final judging

scores with parish councils wishing to improve their chances of future success in the annual competition. Around 100 villages and hamlets across the district were visited, helped by the Lincolnshire Gardens Trust in assessing village facilities including village halls, paths and evidence of community pride and ownership. SKDC has also rewarded residents' work and community spirit with cash awards for their parish council; £400 for winners, £300 for second and £200 for third.

Graffiti project brings new look to Newark’s bridges Two bridges on the Sustrans Track in Newark have been given a fresh new look thanks to a graffiti project organised by Newark and Sherwood District Council. Barnby Road bridge and Clay Lane bridge were given the makeover by students from Barnby Road Academy and Newark Academy. With approval from Sustrans and support from graffiti project specialists iMAGESKOOL, both bridges have been brightened up with the hope it will make the area a more welcoming place. Students, members of the community and councillors spent three days completing artwork on the under passages of the bridges. Sustrans Land Manager for Midlands and East, Martyn Brunt, said: “The new graffiti art is a great addition to the path; it’s brilliant to see local young people producing something for the

benefit of the whole community.” Sergeant Robert Harrison, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “It’s great young people can get involved in doing something productive and we will continue to support young people and our partners in valuable youth work and engagement.”

Cate and Aliki from the Beanblock Cafe

Where did you grow up? Cate - Lichfield (Staffordshire) Aliki -Greece What was your favourite lesson in school? Cate - I loved art but was rubbish at it. But I did enjoy Biology. Aliki - Art What did you want to be when you grew up? Cate - performer/theatre manager - I ended up working as a speech and language therapist for 15 years before giving it all up for BeanBlock Aliki - wanted to own a hotel but also wanted to be a psychologist as I wanted to help people. How did you meet? In the library at a baby group - we formed the company less than a month after meeting! Our ideas were so aligned. BeanBlock was definitely formed from experience of being parents and trying to eat out with small children.

10 | Please mention Use Locally when responding to adverts

What is your most favourite part of your job? Seeing relationships formed between parents they come by themselves and get chatting over how sleep deprived they are and the next thing we know they’ve made plans to meet up together.

What is one of the funniest things that has ever happened at work? Cate superglueing her thumb to a tube of superglue while fixing a toy and having to get it removed at urgent care! If you ever eat out locally where is your favourite place to go? Koinonia Or prince rupert( funnily as with most things Aliki and Cate gave the same answer to this) - we often joke about how we come up with the same ideas at the same time. Our ideas for BeanBlock (having only just met) we’re almost identical! Spooky! What future plans do you have for BeanBlock cafe? We love to expand our community scope and provide some amazing family facilities in Newark But we would also love to be able to provide what we have here in other parts of the country we frequently get visitors to Newark tell us how

they wish there was a BeanBlock near them.

January is Love Your Liver Awareness Month The British Liver Trust want the nation to show their liver some love in January and take their first steps towards better liver health.

J

anuary is often a time when we take stock of our lifestyles after the indulgent Christmas period. This year, it is even more important as the number of people at risk of health issues has risen during the Covid pandemic. During lockdown, many people increased their alcohol consumption and gained weight – the two biggest risk factors for developing liver disease.

liver disease often don't have any symptoms until the disease has progressed and it's far too late for treatment. That's why it's so important to know the risk factors and to keep your liver happy and healthy for life - before longlasting damage can occur. Take your first steps towards better liver health today.

Why you should love your liver The liver is a fascinating organ and its importance is often underrated. It's an amazing multi-tasker and has over 500 vital jobs to do to keep you alive. It's just as important as other organs like your heart and lungs, but they tend to steal most of the limelight. In the UK, liver disease is on the rise. The three major preventable causes are drinking alcohol, obesity and viral hepatitis. When it's damaged, the liver can repair itself, but only up to a point. Sadly, people with

Horoscopes by Russell Grant

ARIES

March 21st - April 20th Don’t be in a rush to make important decisions about love and other close relationships. Spend some time talking about your future as having a mutual goal to work towards will strengthen loving ties. Be honest about your feelings. Your other half will be secretly pleased to listen. They may even feel compelled to reveal a secret they’ve been keeping to themselves.

TAURUS

April 21st - May 21st Thoughts on travel and all the holidays you had hoped to enjoy in the last few years but haven’t had a chance to, could lead you to making a booking. Knowing that very soon you will be heading off for a well-deserved break will feel exciting and liberating. News from overseas around the 8th could cause some havoc when plans may need to be rearranged quickly.

GEMINI

May 22nd - June 21st There will be advantages and disadvantages to your overactive imagination. As the year begins, creative ideas will make jobs you are working on more interesting. At the same time, any suspicions you may have about someone not being loyal or trustworthy should be kept to yourself. These thoughts will prove to be unfounded and could ruin a special relationship.

CANCER

June 22nd - July 23rd Sit tight as the year begins. When it comes to partnership concerns, this isn’t the time to rush things. Your patience will pay off later in the month when joint matters will improve dramatically. If there is anything in a friendship or love affair that needs to be cured, this is a good month to do what you can to restore your relationship to good health.

LEO

24th - August 23rd Take good care of your health. Make it a resolution to get plenty of rest, prepare nourishing meals and exercise regularly. If you have become too reliant on an addictive medication get professional help to overcome this problem. Arguments in the workplace won’t bode well for your job and can be avoided if you keep well away from someone you don’t normally get on well with.

VIRGO

August 24th - Sept 23rd If you’re unhappy with a present romance don’t be too quick to break off this relationship. It may be you have reached a stage where you need to spice things up and find exciting things to do together. Suggesting fun ideas will keep boredom at bay. Whip some romance into your relationship before you both start losing interest.

LIBRA

September 24th - Oct 23rd Embarking on a new venture is a fun idea as the year begins but you don’t have to act immediately. You would be wise to concentrate on tying up the loose-ends of any projects already begun. You’re determined to prove what you are capable of but trying to do too much at once will take a toll on your health. Think about getting outside more and getting some exercise.

SCORPIO

October 24th - Nov 22nd You’re on the lookout for new ideas and you won’t be disappointed with plans that come under discussion as the year begins. On the downside, retrograde planets suggest that in your eagerness to try something new you could take on more than you can handle. Avoid problems by tackling one thing at a time and this will ensure steady progress.

SAGITTARIUS

November 23rd - Dec 21st You had been intending to spend less over Christmas only it may not have quite worked out as you had hoped. It’s a New Year, so make a new start with your finances. When you feel in control of your financial situation, life may not necessarily get easier but you will worry less and be able to relax and have more time to devote other things.

CAPRICORN

December 22nd - Jan 20th The new moon in your sign as the year begins makes this a great time to gain a greater understanding of where you are at in life. Whether you are thinking of relocating or making a fresh start in your career, the important thing is to express your feelings, state your intentions and then make a plan on how to bring this goal about.

AQUARIUS

January 21st - Feb 19th Strengthening your spiritual and emotional foundations will be a priority as the year begins. You might feel as if you have lost sight of your long-term aims and as if you are going nowhere. Spending more time on your own will make you realise how little you need to cultivate contentment. You’ve been concentrating too long on other people’s needs and not your own.

PISCES

Feb 20th - March 20th

Mystical and spiritual matters will be a big attraction as the year begins. You will be keen to find out more about other people’s beliefs and religions. This will lead to some enlightening conversations. Discussions will be deep and meaningful and you could discover you have become the person your family, friends and workmates want to confide in.

Mary Berry’s Raspberry And Apple Muffins Method

Introduction We are lucky to live in a consumer and retail world where fruit and vegetables of every description are available to us all year round, no matter what season we are in. That means the old rules about using summer fruits in summer months have changed somewhat; so to celebrate this I’d like to bring out a traditionally seasonal recipe – raspberry and apple muffins – in these wintry times where we would, in the past, have had rather flatter, more rustic flavours. This bake is easy to do, really delicious, and is certain to put a smile on the faces of old and young alike.

Top Tip • In order to make a light mixture, stir the wet ingredients into the dry ones quickly, gently, and briefly. Stop stirring as soon as they are combined. The mixture should feel light and soft. Don’t over-mix, as this will result in a tough consistency.

1. Preheat the oven to o 200°C (180°C fan / ga as mark 6). Line each hollow of the muffin tin with a paper muffin case. Warm the butter in a small pan over a low heat until it melts, then set asiide to cool. 2. Tip the flour, baking powder, ground almonds, cinnamon and sugar into a large bowl and stir to combine. In a medium bowl, beat the eggs and stir in the yogurt, milk and cooled melted butter. Stir this mixture into the flour mixture, then add the raspberries and apple and stir briefly. 3. Spoon the mixture into the muffin cases. Bake for about 25 minutes or until well risen and firm to the touch. 4. Meanwhile, make the glaze: warm the sugar and orange juice in a small pan over a low heat, just until the sugar has dissolved, then increase the heat and let the mixture bubble for about 30secs so it turns a bit syrupy – not too long, or it will get too sticky. 5. Remove the muffins from the

28 | Please mention Use Locally when responding to adverts

Top Tip Stir fruit through only three or four times, so it retains its consistency and doesn’t disintegrate. In the case of the raspberries, stir only once.

Ingredients • 85g (3oz) butter • 250g (9oz) self-raising flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 45g (1½ oz) ground almonds • 1½ tsp ground cinnamon • 115g (4oz) caster sugar • 2 large eggs • 250g (9oz) plain, full-fat yogurt • 1 tbsp full-fat or semiskimmed milk • 175g (6oz) fresh raspberries • 1 eating apple, such as Cox’s, about 150g (5½ oz), peeled and chopped into 1cm (½ in) pieces For the glaze • 2 tbsp caster sugar • 1 tbsp orange juice oven. Leave them in their tin for 1-2mins, then transfer them to a wire rack. While they are still warm, brush the top of each muffin with the glaze. Leave to cool.

Face Wipe The information you need to delete from your Facebook right now. While the likes of Instagram, Twitter and YouTube all act as platforms on which our exposure is high, it is Facebook that has attracted the most attention, after the platform wilfully and repeatedly breached data protection laws. The subsequent multi-billion dollar fine may have led Mark Zuckerberg to arrest his company’s careless approach to data integrity, but the bigger picture for everyday users was to question more closely what they share, and with who. Here are four quick fixes that will tighten up your online profile: Preferences Much of the data Facebook gathers from users is there so that they can be targeted for products and services linked to lifestyle choices. You can limit the information used by visiting the Ad Preferences page and, in turn, clicking Your Interests and Your Information tabs. This won’t reduce advertising you see, nor erase data already stored, though it will stop

specific targeting. Off-Facebook activity After two years of development, in 2020 the site finally launched a tool that ceased the sharing of Facebook data with thirdparty marketing firms and ad networks. This chain-breaker can be accessed through the Your Information page, and will immediately stop the site replicating your activity elsewhere. For instance, when you search for a pair of shoes elsewhere on the web, then immediately are bombarded with the same brand through the social network. App and mobile When you use Facebook on your mobile, it will track various things such as location, wi-fi network you are connected to and your location, and this is additional information you can ‘untick’ to a large extent, though never fully. Lifestyle While unconscious presentation of information through online habits is something most of us are keen to address, what we give out voluntarily is much more

profound. Everything from birthdays to check-ins at locations, right through to fun quizzes that log our preferences (to football or Disney or the Amalfi Coast, or anything!), are all used to gather information. Likewise, when we enrich our profile with information about our friends, families and hobbies, we are potentially exposing our habits and preferences to everyone, so consider checking your basic Facebook settings – is your profile open just to friends, or to the entire community? Likewise, how relevant is it to list your kids’ birthdays or places of work? The bad news is that while if you decide you want a clean sweep entirely from Facebook, you can deactivate your account, the company owns What’s App and Instagram, so you have further privacy decisions to make!

Greenfingers…

The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about making time for your garden to serve you as a place of creativity and contemplation. It was pointed out to me a few years ago that a lot of my novels contain a sort of yearning for something. That led me to think, maybe I’ve got a deep in-built craving or hankering. Maybe we all have, and in life we’re all looking for something… something more. I think the lucky ones are those who find it and know when they have found it. So where am I going with this? Well, I do sometimes feel a lot of those wants and desires can be arrested by going to a place that gives you quiet contemplation. It was John Lennon who said, “Life is what happens when you’re busy mak king otther pllans”. Well stop being busy, stop making other plans, and for goodness’

sake get out in th hat garden of yours and enjoy it! You see, a real prroblem for a number of garde eners is the fact we spend hours, days, weeks and months tend ding to that glorious bit of land. We shovel, trim, cut, prune and pick until our hands are blistered and our knees are sore, yet omit to actually take a step back, or pull up a chair, or just sit on the blessed grrass and soak it all in. Satisfaction in your garden sometimes come es in not gardening; it’s in the ability to stop! So as we e get ready for when winter morphs wonderfully into o spring, perhaps try to do o less, not more. I know that can be easier said than done; there e are always job bs to do, and d there wiill be those of us who cannot sit still in the garden n - we find it difficult to stop, to accept a space how it is, always spotting imperfections he ere and there. In truth, itt is all those blemishes and flaws that make nature what it iss - beautiful.

32 | Please mention Use Locally when responding to adverts

I’ve got two gardens of my own and I’m very proud of them - one in Hampshire, and a small coastal plot on the Isle of Wight. They are my achievements, my own little bit of land… but they’re only relevant and special if I remember to spend time in them, enjoying them, and sometimes, you know, doing nothing much at all!
