Newark Conservation Area Granted High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) Status Following Newark Conservation Area being granted High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) status, Newark and Sherwood District Council, with funding from Historic England, is working with local people and partners to help breathe new life into high streets and buildings that are rich in heritage.

N

ewark Conservation Area has been awarded £275,000 High Street Heritage Action Zone funding from Historic England for regeneration in the area. Newark and Sherwood District Council match funding and private sector investment result in a total of £550,000 for the project. The focus is on repairing and refurbishing key historic buildings in the town centre, re-designing the public realm to build a more connected area and helping to boost the local economy. Which works will be funded? Newark’s HSHAZ programme will help transform and restore disused and dilapidated buildings into new homes, shops, workplaces, and community spaces, bring back local historic character and improve the public realm. Significant listed buildings include the Grade II* listed former White Hart on the Market Place and the Grade II listed Corn Exchange. Throughout the three-year project they will be working on: · Providing grants for building work and refurbishment – grants will become available for those undertaking physical works to properties with significant

Wild World Heroes, Summer Reading Challenge 2021 at Inspire libraries 10 July - 5 September 2021

The Summer Reading Challenge is back in Inspire libraries from Saturday 10 July and it’s completely FREE to take part. Produced by The Reading Agency and run in libraries across the country the Summer Reading Challenge is a brilliant way to maintain children’s reading enthusiasm throughout the summer break. This year children join the Wild World Heroes who are working to make their hometown of Wilderville even better for the people and animals that live there. How the Challenge works • Children sign up at their local library and receive a Wild World Heroes collector poster. • Children borrow and read at least six library books of their choice during the summer, collecting special stickers to complete their poster plus extra incentives along the way. They can choose the books they want to read; story books, fact books, poetry, joke books – as long as they are library books all reading counts! • Library staff and volunteers are on hand

to talk to children about the books they have read*. • Children who complete the Summer Reading Challenge are presented with a certificate and a medal.

Children Wild World Heroes is running in all Inspire libraries until Sunday 5 September. For children aged 4 – 11

Volunteers Needed

More than 100 volunteers are needed to help with the Newark Dragon Boat Festival on Sunday 19th September. Rachel Wilson – CBC Fundraising and Marketing Manager, says

Volunteer co-ordinator with Beaumond House Hospice Care, Lucy Millard, said the volunteers will be crucial to the event’s success. “They played a vital role when it was held for the first time and we are looking for even more volunteers to help us this time,” she said. The organisers have decided to have three shifts for the volunteers – 9 to 12.30; 12 to 3.30 and 3 to the end of the day. “For the last festival we had two longer shifts but we felt that by having three shorter ones it will hopefully encourage more people to help us out,” she said. The biggest need is for river marshals – more than 30 are needed for each shift to ensure the safety of visitors on both sides of the river bank. Volunteers are also needed to help with carparking and litter

picking to ensure the site is left clean and tidy at the end of the day. “The festival is very much a community event, helping to raise money for two essential local charities,” said Lucy. “So we are appealing to the community to come and help us by giving a little of their time.”

“The local community have always been so generous volunteering to help and I am constantly overwhelmed by how many people give us their time and expertise, we simply can’t organise the event without this support. In 2019 we had more than 70 volunteers involved in the Dragon Boat Festival and I hope that we can build further on this level of support this year. We can promise you some fun, some great company and the feel good factor of helping two local charities. “

Are you able to help? If so email her at lucy.millard@beaumondhouse.co.uk or rachel@childrensbereavementcentre.co.uk For further details please call 01636 610556 or visit www.beaumondhouse.co.uk

Hospice heroes wanted A new campaign to find 100 young Hospice Heroes is launched today, following the on-going Hospice Hearts project. The aim is to sign up 100 children, aged three to 11, who will each raise £100 for Beaumond House Hospice Care by doing 100 challenges. Michelle Baker (Crafty Betty) has made a super hero mask and cape for the charity’s Sunshine Bear who is helping to promote the campaign. Robert Brown of Eakring has produced a short video starring Sunshine Bear which is available for primary schools and children’s groups. Head of Fundraising and marketing Cathy Lowe said Beaumond House was keen to encourage children to get involved and help them understand more about the hospice and its work. “This campaign is a great way to children to keep busy over the summer holidays and also help to teach them the importance of helping others,” she said. “Our video and promotional leaflet have challenge suggestions, but we hope that children will come up with their own fun ideas.” To take part children must register with the hospice and they need to bring the money they have raised to Beaumond House by September 3. Each Hospice Hero who completes their challenges will receive a mini Hospice Hero bear and a thank-you certificate which will be presented at the Newark Dragon Boat Festival on September 19.

To register and find out more, visit www.beaumondhouse.co.uk/hospice-heroes where you can download a sponsor form or set up a JustGiving page. Or call 01636 610556 or email fundraising@beaumondhouse.co.uk for further information.

Chris Rice

Owner of Pedal Electric Cycles, the area’s electric bike specialist, in Navenby. Tell us a bit about your background and where you grew up? I grew up in Lincolnshire and returned many years later, having gone through university to train in Product Design and develop a successful career in Marketing and New Business, finishing off as a freelance New Business consultant introducing retail design consultancies to brands. How did your business Pedal Electric Cycles come about? I was thinking about a change of direction and considered turning my passion for motorcycles and working for myself into a business and looked into opening a motorcycle dealership. One of my clients at the time was Raleigh, who had recently been bought by a Dutch cycling company, who had already seen the growth electric bikes in mainland Europe and were predicting the same in the UK, so I decided to look into selling electric bikes, rather than motorcycles. It was a leap of faith when we opened five years ago but the demand for electric bikes was building nicely but exploded when the first lockdown started and the rest is history… What are the benefits of having an electric bike? ● No hill or headwind is going to stop you enjoying a longer and more interesting bike ride. ● You can keep up with family and friends. ● You will improve both your physical and mental fitness, as you will ride your electric bike more often and further than before.

You can save money by using an electric bike rather than your car, for shorter journeys to work or to the shops etc ● You can contribute to a cleaner healthier environment now and in the future. ●

Would you say that your typical type of customer is changing? Definitely and fast. We are seeing a younger customer come through the door every day and they are buying as a lifestyle choice, rather than through necessity. I believe more people now see a decent electric bike as an investment in their future physical and mental well-being. Customers also seem prepared to spend more on their first electric bike than in previous years. Many customers are using the money they have saved during the Covid pandemic. This is due to the fact they have been unable to go on their main overseas holiday or haven’t spent money going out. We are also seeing an increasing interest in customers giving up their cars for a more environmentally conscious electric bike.

What do you love most about what you do? Putting a smile on customers faces, when they try an electric bike for the first time and when we handover their new bike. We also enjoy receiving feedback from customers when they come back in for service and they tell us it was ‘one of the best decisions they ever made’ and it has been ‘life changing’ Where is your favourite place to go on a bike ride? Anywhere there is a big hill, with a good view. I particularly enjoy riding around the Lincolnshire Wolds and Rutland Water. What future plans do you have for the business? We have just opened a new and larger workshop on the outskirts of Lincoln and plan to expand the size of our Navenby showroom, so we can offer an even wider choice of electric models. We are also negotiating on a second store/hire centre/workshop on the East Coast, to enable us to offer more customers the opportunity experience an electric bike ride while on staycation.

DBT and Me

Explaining how DBT – that’s Dialectical Behaviour Therapy – as an advanced psychological coping technique, can help us through everyday problems.

Practising mindfulness At its core, mindfulness means paying attention to the present to stop intrusive thoughts from sneaking in, and practising it is actually very easy. Perhaps begin by sitting in the garden for five minutes and notice all the sights, smells, sounds and sensations around you. Touch leaves, smell flowers, feel the sun on you. Make time and space so that you can practise this skill regularly and you will soon find yourself automatically living more in the moment.

encountered through lockdown, and when this anxiety arrives, it can take a toll on even our closest relationships as tensions build.

Think as well about exercising, being creative and even eating. The focus is on a meditative appreciation of the moment and the positive sensations of those precious seconds in which you are truly enveloped in yourself.

To interact with others we must at first take a break from our everyday schedules so that we can give friends and loved ones the attention they deserve.

Interacting with others Stressful periods can emanate from things at polar ends of the spectrum – from increased workload to the sort of boredom we have all

For this season, DBT encourages us to nurture both our relationships with others and ourselves. In conflicts, it suggests we take time to listen to the other person, validate that we have heard them, and then practise empathy to further deepen our understanding.

Tension relief DBT is particularly useful when we are in times of crisis. It provides a quick and effective way to soothe the mind and free the body of anxiety, but first we must get to that place of calm.

Here are some recommended methods, using ‘TIPP’. Each of these will help reverse feelings of distress: - Temperature Splash cold water on your face or hold an ice cube; anything to take the heat from your body - Intense exercise Run around the block, do star jumps or jog up and down the stairs to work the tension out - Paced breathing Take long steady breathes to stimulate your parasympathetic nervous system - Paired muscle relaxation Tense and relax muscles throughout your body until you feel calm Radical acceptance Life can feel painful and out of our control, but DBT encourages us to accept rather than push back against our reality. Accepting, however, doesn’t mean you have to like what is happening, it simply steers you away from you can’t control to focus on what you can.

Newark Canoe Club Newark Canoe Club is situated at Thurlby lake near Whitham St Hughes. We are a club of volunteers passionate about Kayaking, Canoeing and Paddle boarding, affiliated with British Canoeing and fully insured. Every Sunday between 14:00 and 16:00 we open the club to non- members at the lake to run open sessions. These are taster sessions so people can try it out for a minimal cost. All boats and equipment are provided for these open sessions. We have qualified paddlers to look after nonmembers to keep them safe and run through pointers on how to improve and get the most out of their chosen craft on the water. We are open to all ages and abilities, and have a perfect track record of safety. Being on the water builds confidence and fitness for all, and is great fun. We have created a covid secure site on a Sunday where we keep people segregated with plenty of room, specific areas for own kit and loan kit, which is cleaned after every

user, hand sanitisers and track and trace. We run training and coaching sessions to further the skills of club members on and off the water, and run several river trips throughout the year. Sometimes they are nice quiet river adventures and sometimes they are white water kayaking trips. All good fun and extremely safe and well organised. To join in on a Sunday please

visit our website to book an open session and tell us what you would like to try. Also keep an eye on the site as we will be running an open day later on in the summer with fun and games for all.

Please visit us at newark-canoe-club.org.uk

Recipe Tip

If using tough greens such as raw kale, massage the leaves first with olive oil to soften.

Ingredients (serves four) Greens – A large bunch of robust salad leaves such as kale, iceberg lettuce, endive or radicchio

‘As you like it’ Salad Introduction

Go big and bold with this bright and flavoursome salad that can be thrown together at the first knock of unannounced guests.

Top Tips

• This is the ideal salad for when you want to use up leftovers in both your cupboards and fridge, so don’t be afraid to mix and match. If you like the ingredients, they will go together. • Whizz up a zingy green goddess dressing in your blender using whatever herbs you have at your disposal, a cup of either mayonnaise or Greek yogurt and either raw garlic or anchovies. • You can either serve this in a big bowl in the middle of the dinner table or plate-up the salads individually depending on the meal you are serving. • If using tough greens such as raw kale, massage the leaves first with olive oil to soften.

Method

Grains – Two cups of cooked grains such as cous cous, quinoa, farro or barley Roasted vegetables – for example, an entire summer squash, two sweet potatoes, two red peppers or two courgettes roasted in olive oil till tender and sweet

1. Using either one large bowl or four individual bowls, layer the greens, followed by the grains, followed by roasted vegetables and finally, raw vegetables.

Raw vegetables – A few handfuls of your favourite raw veg such as sliced red onion, grated carrot, celery, tomatoes, avocado or fennel.

2. Add dressing and gently toss the salad (for best results use your hands).

Dressing – One cup of a zippy, fresh dressing such as basic vinaigrette, Caesar or yogurt and lemon

3. Finally, top salad with the protein and topping.

Protein – A choice of tofu, four sliced boiled eggs, four grilled tuna steaks or four grilled chicken breasts Topping – Add a little crunch with one cupful of toasted pumpkin seeds, slivered almonds, chopped pecans or toasted pine nuts

Complete guide to composting To get your compost really producing the type of nutrient-rich humus that will bring lawns, beds and green areas flourishing back to life, here are a few useful tips. Carbon vs nitrogen

Getting the balance between these two correct will ultimately define just how good your compost is. Carbon matter includes. It is this carbon layer that will give your compost space, lightness and a fluffy consistency. Nitrogen-heavy matter, on the other hand, includes food waste, manure and kitchen waste, and provides a heavier, protein-rich presence. For the best compost, aim for one-third carbon (branches, stems, wood, paper bags, coffee filters, egg shells, wood ash and more) versus two-thirds nitrogen (food waste, manure and kitchen scraps, which provide a heavier, protein-rich presence).

A few don’ts

Don’t put meat, bones or fish scraps in your compost. Not only will they smell, they’ll also attract pests and you’ll soon find yourself clearing up the remnants of foxes, cats and other night roamers. Obviously it’s smart to keep weeds or diseased plants away from your mix; while beware banana peels and orange rinds, as these may contain pesticide residues.

Straw law

Many believe straw is the secret weapon where composting is concerned. It’s a great way to ensure a good carbon/nitrogen balance, whilst adding oxygen space. You can also cut out some of the labour-heavy turning (see below) if you have a respectably high straw content.

Getting started

Find a space on bare earth so that worms and other organisms are able to access and aerate your compost, all the while transferring it into your beds. Lay twigs or straw down, then begin to build your compost layer by layer, remembering your carbon and nitrogen mix, and ensuring plenty of gaps are left in between levels so that oxygen can work its magic. Watering the compost can be a good idea, and covering the top with a sheet will help it retain moisture and heat, as well as preventing it from becoming drenched by downpours of rain.

Is the air there?

The big requirement for composting is oxygen, and its ability to find a route through the kitchen and yard waste you are disposing of; therefore aerate using a shovel once a week.

Spreading

When you have accessed your compost, spread at thickness of up to one inch before adding a wood mulch layer to lock in all that nutrient-rich goodness. Your plants, lawns and produce will love the benefits and your garden will be a more beautiful and productive entity because of it.
