Happy Snapping How to get the best from your phone photos and videos
Think of the last time you took a photograph or recorded a video. What did you use? For most of us, the answer will be “my phoneâ€?: in a very short space of time phone cameras have replaced traditional cameras for most people’s everyday shooting. However, not everyone is getting the most from their phone’s camera - and a few apps and accessories can make an enormous difference. One of the most common problems with smartphone clips is the washed-out effect you get when you use the Ă DVK :KLOH VRPH UHFHQW VPDUWSKRQHV XVH /(' Ă DVKHV to try and address this, it’s EHWWHU LI \RX MXVW WXUQ WKH Ă DVK off altogether: apps such as Google Camera, Apple’s iPhoto and Camera+ enable you to change the exposure, which affects how much light the camera lets in: the longer the exposure, the better the lowlight performance. Another problem that affects many photos and videos is camera shake. While many phones attempt to compensate for this they can’t get rid of it FRPSOHWHO\ VR LI \RX¡UH Ă€QGLQJ blur is a problem it’s a good idea to invest in a phone tripod such as Joby’s GripTight (around ÂŁ20), which can grip 6
to almost anything and ensure shake-free shooting. If you fancy getting creative with your camera there are lots of options to choose from, from cheap and cheerful wideangle lenses to Sony’s truly impressive QX10 Lens. It isn’t cheap - the RRP is £179 - but it adds a wireless, 18 megapixel lens with 10X optical zoom to deliver photographs you simply won’t believe came from a smartphone. Another way to get creative is to use specialist apps. The aforementioned Camera+ and iPhoto enable you to apply ÀOWHUV WKDW PDNH \RXU LPDJHV look ancient, while 8mm does the same for video by applying YLQWDJH FDPHUD ÀOWHUV UDQJLQJ from Super 8-style footage to what looks like an early black and white movie. iStopMotion makes it easy to create Wallace and Gromit-style stop motion videos, while Filmic Pro offers a range of professional video features that turn an iPhone into a powerful high GHÀQLWLRQ YLGHR FDPHUD There’s one big problem with smartphone shooting, though, and that’s the smartphone itself: the screen is too small and the speakers too quiet for you to spot audio and video issues that are really obvious
on a big TV. For best results it’s always a good idea to edit your images and video on your computer, and there are several ways to transfer it: via the USB cable that came with your device, or by taking out the memory card (if your phone uses one) and popping it into a card reader. Many recent PCs have memory card slots that take the industry standard SD/SDHC memory cards, but if you don’t have one or you want the option to use multiple memory card formats it’s worth investing £10 or so in a memory card reader that plugs into a spare USB socket. There’s no shortage of software for editing images on PCs and Macs: both Mac OS X and Windows have decent built-in image editors, while the free paint.net (on PC) and The GIMP (PC and Mac) deliver professional image editing for free. You can get decent video editing for free too: Lightworks on PC is great, as is Apple’s own iMovie. Both programs make it easy to clean up and edit your clips. YOURS 4 A DAY Ltd. The Working Person’s Accountant
YOURS
It’s P11d time!!!
A DAY
Help with your accounts, book keeping and payroll by qualified friendly professionals Your very own personal accounts department costing far less than you would expect. Ring and see how much time and money we can save you. We provide:l Book-keeping and Management Information l Payroll Services l Year End Accounts and Tax Returns l AAT Qualified and Licensed.
If an employee earns more than a certain amount and receive any ‘benefits in kind’ from your company then the employer or their accountant will use a P11d form to tell HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) about the value of any benefits they have received. During a tax year you may receive additional benefits from the employer. These are things that effectively increase your income and include: • Private medical insurance • Interest free loans • A company car The employer will only declare these benefits if the employee earned at least £8,500 in the tax year, including the value of the benefits. The employer will work out how much each benefit is worth, record it on the P11d form and send it to HMRC. They’ll also give the employee a copy, which they will need for their records or if they complete a Self Assessment tax return. The deadline for the submission of tax year 2013-2014 P11d’s is 6th July 2014 P11d forms are useful for employees if they apply for a loan or mortgage as they can be used to prove the value of the additional income they have received in the form of benefits in kind. The employer is obliged to calculate the cash equivalent of the employee benefits and report these to you and to HMRC by 6th July following the end of the tax year. Companies can be penalised if P11d forms are not completed or are completed inaccurately. Your employer doesn’t have to give you a copy of your P11D but, by law, they must tell you what details they’ve included on the form – even if you’ve subsequently left the job.
One of top 10 reasons used to HMRC for not submitting tax return on time. ‘My husband told me the deadline was 31st March and I believed him. (Leicester hairdresser)

The Importance of Sunglasses for comfort and eye protection We protect our skin with sunscreen, but what about our eyes? Most of us are aware of the dangerous effects ultraviolet (UV) rays have on our skin, but few of us realize the danger imposed on our eyes. UV radiation, whether from natural sunlight or artificial UV rays, can damage the eye's surface tissues as well as the cornea and lens. UV Radiation UV radiation consists of invisible rays from the sun. There are three types of UV radiation however only 2 of these are harmful to the eyes: UVA and UVB. Exposure to these rays can have adverse effects on your eyes and vision. Short- and long-term exposure to these dangerous rays may cause significant damage. UV Radiation Protection It is not yet known how much exposure to UV radiation will cause how much damage, but a good recommendation is to wear quality sunglasses that offer good protection and a wide-brimmed hat when working outdoors, participating in outdoor sports, taking a walk, running errands or doing anything in the sun. To provide protection for your eyes, your sunglasses should: • block out 99% to 100% of both UV-A and UV-B light • screen out 75 to 90 percent of visible light • be perfectly matched in color and free of distortion and imperfection If you spend a lot of time in bright sunlight, wrap-around frames can provide additional protection from harmful UV radiation by keeping UV rays
from reaching the eyes. Also, remember UV eye protection for children and teenagers. They typically spend more time in the sun than adults. Finally, even if you are wearing contact lenses that have UV protection, you still need to wear sunglasses. UV rays will likely affect the eye tissue that is not covered by the contact lenses. Your eyes will be more comfortable, too, with most of the bright light blocked.

How safe is your Sun Cream? Do you dutifully apply sunscreen on all of your exposed skin every time you go out in the sun? There are a few reasons why this widely circulated advice is counter to reason, one of which is the sunscreen itself. Every year the Environmental Working Group (EWG) releases their annual guide to sunscreens,1 and this year's data again shows that you must be very cautious when choosing sunscreen to apply to your skin. Two-thirds of the sunscreens analyzed by EWG did not work well or contained potentially hazardous ingredients. This included many of the most popular brands on the market. If you use sunscreen purchased from a drug store, grocery store, or discount chain, there's a high chance your sunscreen is on EWG's worst sunscreens list. So do yourself (and your kids) a favor by getting up to speed which sunscreens are safe, and which are toxic, before slathering up again. EWG Releases Toxic Sunscreens' List Most top-selling sunscreen brands were among those that made the most toxic list. Most contained the following three "red flag" ingredients. If you see them listed on the label of your sunscreen, throw it away and choose another: 1. Oxybenzone This is one of the most troublesome ingredients found in the majority of sunscreens. Its primary function is to absorb ultraviolet light. However, oxybenzone is also believed to cause hormone disruptions and cell damage that may provoke cancer. According to EWG:2
"‌the chemical oxybenzone penetrates the skin, gets into the bloodstream and acts like estrogen in the body. It can trigger allergic reactions. Data are preliminary, but studies have found a link between higher concentrations of oxybenzone and health harms. One study has linked oxybenzone to endometriosis in older women; another found that women with higher levels of oxybenzone during pregnancy had lower birth weight daughters." 2. Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A palmitate) Sunscreen products may actually increase the speed at which malignant cells develop and spread skin cancer because they contain vitamin A and its derivatives, retinol, and retinyl palmitate. The problem occurs when this form of vitamin A is exposed to the sun (as opposed to when it is used in night cream, for example), which is why sunscreens that contain it should be avoided. 3. Fragrance I caution against using personal care products that contain synthetic fragrance, as this term describes any number of harmful chemicals that do not have to be listed individually on the label. Some common "fragrance" chemicals include: Parabens: Synthetic preservatives known to interfere with hormone production and release.
Phthalates: Another synthetic preservative that's carcinogenic and linked to reproductive effects (decreased sperm counts, early breast development, and birth defects) and liver and kidney damage. Synthetic musks: These are linked to hormone disruption and are thought to persist and accumulate in breast milk, body fat, umbilical cord blood, and the environment. How to Choose a Safer Sunscreen The sunscreens featured in EWG's best sunscreens' list do not contain the three toxic ingredients listed above. In lieu of the skin-penetrating hormone-disrupting chemicals like oxybenzone, the safer sunscreens tended to use non-nanoparticle sized zinc- and titanium-based mineral ingredients, which block the sun's rays without penetrating your skin.

New arrangements for support of Children when parents separate There have been many changes in family law recently not least in the way that the Government now approaches the issue of child maintenance. Child maintenance is financial support that helps towards a child's living costs when the parents have separated. It is an obligation and therefore must always be considered when there are relevant children of the family. It has always been the case that parents are encouraged to try and agree an appropriate level of support for their children. Since 1990, if they did not agree, either parent had the option to go to the Child Support Agency where a simple formula was applied based on a percentage of the payers net income, depending on the amount of children being supported and the amount of overnight stays. In view of a multitude of difficulties it was announced last year that the CSA would be abolished. No new cases have been taken on by them since November 2013. The Government now wants parents to agree their child maintenance arrangements amicably or face a charge. The new scheme is the Child Maintenance Service. The main difference is that payments are to be calculated on gross pay rather than net and there will be fees to be paid. The paying parent will have to pay a 20% fee added to the calculated maintenance payment and the receiving parent will pay 4% to actually get the money. Any parent registering with the service will be charged an upfront fee of £20. The addition of the Child Maintenance Service now means that there are three types of child maintenance schemes in existence and two authorities dealing with them. This is inevitably going to cause some confusion and it remains to be seen how smoothly the transition from one scheme to another will take place. Separated parents can use an on-line child maintenance calculator to work out how much maintenance payments would be if the scheme were used. This can be used as the basis for an agreement but does not prevent parents from agreeing a figure which is below or above what the CMS calculation would be. Child support and child arrangements generally when parents separate can cause feelings to run high and therefore be a cause of dispute and it is recommended that you seek legal advice at the earliest opportunity to put yourself in the best position to reach an agreement. We offer a free initial half hour assessment meeting for anyone seeking such advice.

The Discount Appliance Centre is dedicated to bringing you the most comprehensive range of built in and free standing kitchen appliances in the Nottinghamshire area, together with the most competitive prices and outstanding customer service. We encourage you to visit our showroom where we have just completed our brand new dedicated 2014 Liebherr Refrigeration Zone, showing a full range of premium refrigeration & wine storage units. Added to this, we have also had the first Siemens ecoCentre developed within the store with a fantastic display of everything from freestanding laundry to attractive built-in cooking. Our experienced staff, are on hand to offer you advice and answer any queries that you may have. Established in 1987 the original business was mainly fitting kitchens, importing products from throughout Europe from manufacturers such as "ARTHUR BONNET" and "RATIONAL" but to name just two. Associated with the kitchen industry is obviously the electrical appliance market, and so the seeds were set for what eventually became known as "THE DISCOUNT APPLIANCE CENTRE". Today the "DISCOUNT APPLIANCE CENTRE" is well established as the areas leading independent electrical outlet offering a range of products second to none. The recipe for our continued success in this field is a simple one, to have the products our customers require, at the price they want to pay and more importantly having them in stock for immediate collection or delivery. Holding stock is what puts the "DISCOUNT APPLIANCE CENTRE" ahead of our competitors, and all of those products are available to you on our constantly updated website, www.discountappliancecentre.com. What's In The Shop? Probably the largest selection of "Free Standing" and "Built In" appliances in the area. Our company catchphrase is NAMES YOU RECOGNISE, PRICES YOU WONT" which is exactly what we have on show. All leading brands from Bosch, Liebherr, Falcon, Rangemaster, Neff, Siemens and Smeg Plus many many more. Live working appliances and demonstrations also give customers a different interactive retail experience. Home & Interiors Double-Up Your Space
By Katherine Sorrell
When you have run out of space and it’s not possible to extend, the time has come to think creatively. With the right approach, you may even be able to make two rooms out of one. Had a new baby? Children growing up? Started working from home? Every year it seems like there’s more pressure on our living space. And while it’s not always possible to move up the property ladder to a ten-bedroom mansion, there is always a way to make your current property work better for you. It’s called doubling-up – and it’s all about giving your home a new lease of life with some thoughtful rearrangements and careful additions, resulting in multifunctional rooms that are entirely practical and yet also utterly stylish. Take a long, hard look at every room in your home and, even in the smallest of apartments, it will soon be possible to VHH ZKLFK VSDFHV FDQ EH PRGLÀHG VR DV to serve more than one purpose. We’re not talking about expensive extensions or complex loft conversions, but simply about making the most of what you’ve already got. Like adding a dining area to D NLWFKHQ D KRPH RIÀFH LQ D EHGURRP RU a hideaway guest bed in a living room. No room to sit down and eat? Turn a small kitchen into a kitchen/diner with a foldaway table and chairs. The table is attached to a wall with dowels, while the chairs can be hung on a wall hook, nicely out of the way. By raising a child’s bed you create two rooms: one for sleeping, and one below for playing, studying, relaxing or for sleepovers. The same goes with an adult bedroom – if you have high enough ceilings, consider building a mezzanine sleeping space, leaving room underneath to use however you wish. of every inch (vital when you need to double up on what you have), foldaway furniture is a great option to start with, whether it’s a bed, a desk or a dining table and chairs. Peg rails and hanging rails, hooks and shelves – from high DERYH \RXU KHDG WR ÀWWHG DFURVV DQ alcove, this can be incredibly useful storage. Think high: a raised child’s bed with space beneath for a desk, sofa or play area, for example. Or could you even build a mezzanine sleeping or working space? And think low: slide a truckle bed under a permanent one, or tuck stools under a small table and magically create an intimate dining area. It’s a lateral-thinking approach that’s quick, easy and inexpensive, and that will make your home as functional and as good-looking as you could ever want, no matter what changes come your way in the future.

Stars of the New York Motor Show By James Baggott
The New York Motor Show might not be the biggest event on the automotive calendar, but there were some still some treats in store for car fans in the Big Apple. With the likes of Jaguar Land Rover ploughing huge budgets into dominating the Manhattan showcase, we saw car launches on aircraft carriers and some important models for Europe showing WKHLU IDFHV IRU WKH ÀUVW WLPH Here is our pick of the top cars of the show.
Land Rover Discovery Concept It was launched on an aircraft carrier, next to a spaceship, with the Manhattan skyline
as a backdrop – anyone would think the new Discovery was a big deal for Land Rover. Of course, we jest, it’s a massive deal. This debut is not just a new model, but a new “family” for the manufacturer – the ÀUVW RI ZKLFK ZLOO UHSODFH WKH Freelander next year and wear a new Discovery Sport badge. It’s packed with tech too, like a “see-through” bonnet - augmented reality that can project sat nav directions and camera feeds on the smart glass windscreen - gesture controls that open doors without the need to touch them and the ability to remotely drive the car using a tablet or smart phone. How much of this James Bond Q branch-style tech will make it into production is unclear, but WKH ÀUP·V ELJ ZLJV SURPLVHG us cash is being invested in all of it. Exciting stuff.
Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe The world’s chief executives can worry no more about making their next meeting on time thanks to this luxury 38
missile. With 577bhp under the bonnet, the monster S63 AMG Coupe can hit 60mph in just 3.9 seconds – and shave precious seconds off WKH GDVK WR WKH RIÀFH It has a 5.5-litre turbocharged V8 engine that produces 40bhp more than the CL63 AMG it replaces and an interior that’ll please those XVHG WR ÀYH VWDU KRWHOV DQG private jets. Air suspension, an imaginatively-titled Magic Body Control system and other technological trickery helps keep caramel lattes from spilling on Saville Row suits too. The S63 will go on sale in November and cost D ÀQDQFH GLUHFWRU ERWKHULQJ £100,000.
BMW M4 Convertible Convertible? Cabriolet? We’re not sure which term the Germans prefer – and frankly don’t care – all we know is the BMW M4 looks absolutely stunning with its roof chopped off. The M4 features a clever three-piece folding metal roof and some not-so-subtle design tweaks to mark it out

from lesser drop-tops in the range. These include quad tailpipes, larger front bumper and a tweaked kidney grille. The convertible will go on sale in September costing ÂŁ60,730 and boasts a 3.0litre turbocharged six cylinder with 425bhp. The new car is 60kg lighter than the old drop-top M3 and this has helped lop nearly a second off the 0-60mph time, now down to 4.6 seconds.
Ford Mustang 50th Anniversary It wouldn’t be an American motor show without some muscle, and thankfully Ford has been taking its protein shakes and come up with this. It’s the 50th anniversary Mustang revealed by Bill Ford himself. The night before the show, Ford chopped one up and rebuilt it, cut-and-shut VW\OH RQ WKH WK Ă RRU RI the Empire State Building, recreating a stunt they pulled off with the original back in 1954. And in what manufacturers like to call “synergyâ€? they’ll make just 1,954 of these special edition ‘Stangs. It’s available in a not-tooconfusing blue or white colour choice, has a retro four speed auto box and chrome detailing that also gives a hat-tip to its heritage. Under the “hoodâ€? is a 5.0-litre V8 (of course) producing 414bhp and meanwhile we can look forward to our own Mustang arriving in the UK soon.
Kia Sedona Finally, Kia’s not-so-pretty
Sedona MPV has been given the same plastic-surgery treatment as the rest of the range – and it’s looking not too shabby as a result. The new model might still be a little bit van-like, but with the trademark Kia tiger nose and smart headlights, it looks a lot smarter – and there are few who’d argue it didn’t need it. The MPV has seating for eight as well as some clever internal trickery that can fold seats away and remove them, offering owners a multitude of options.
Nissan Murano Right, don’t get your hopes up, the largest of Nissan’s MPV family is unlikely to be making it to the UK any time soon. And that’s a shame because this big brother to the Qashqai and soon-toarrive X-Trail takes the family features a little further. Lower, longer and wider than the car it replaces, the car has a smart interior with a 60 per cent reduction in switches to make it simpler
for drivers. Nissan has said it will monitor the UK’s reaction to the car to see if there’s an opportunity to import it.
BMW X4 There were a number of models that didn’t make our top cars of the show cut, and this X4 very nearly was one of them. Let’s face it, the crossover fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down – but thankfully there are many people out there that love an ugly duckling, and BMW will be hoping they’re willing to buy one of these. The maker has form here. Apparently 240,000 people bought the equally visuallychallenged X6, so there’s certainly a market for it. Borrowing engines from the X3, the X4 will go on sale priced from £35,590 – that’s a lot of money for a car only a mother could love. So why’s it included here? Well, we like manufacturers being brave – and revealing this with a straight face was certainly that...

Mediterranean Magic by Pippa Greenwood
If you can’t get away this year, how about creating your own Mediterranean hotspot in your garden? Even if you do manage to escape to the sun for a week or two this year, you’ll still have the rest of the summer at home and a little slice of Italy, France or Greece outside your back door will EULQJ KDSS\ PHPRULHV ÁRRGLQJ back. 7KH ÀUVW WKLQJ WR GR LV WR choose the sunniest spot available – it’ll not only make sitting out there more enjoyable, but will also mean that you can install some serious sun-loving plants too. Painting the nearby house, shed or garage wall with white masonry paint will help to create the right atmosphere and look. At the same time it ZLOO KHOS WR UHÁHFW RXU VXQOLJKW – often a bit washed out compared to more southern climes - so providing a stronger light for the type of plants that appreciate it.
want to make brand new pots look more weathered try painting them with a solution of plain yoghurt as this will help to encourage rapid colonisation by mosses, algae and lichens. Any new hard landscaping such as wall, paths or patios and terraced surfaces will look best in natural stone and there are now also terracotta tiles available that are suitable for use in the garden. Terracotta tiles can also have a storageheater effect too – after a long, hot day they will have absorbed a good deal of heat and this will then be released gradually in the evening. Add interest to a vertical surface by planting a vine. They have attractive leaves and there are plenty to choose from that will fruit well in our climate. You may not be able to create your own vintage but the vines will look particularly authentic when draped with a few bunches of grapes.
Mediterranean gardens often make full use of the walls and any other vertical surfaces, so put up hanging baskets, pots and wall baskets and cram them full of plants.
Glazed tiles, wall-hangings and even the odd ornament or two can also add to the Mediterranean look, but make sure you choose items that won’t be instantly bleached by the sun.

Growing your citrus tree in a good-sized terracotta pot means that you can move it into a more protected spot if necessary. With their wonderful silvery grey leaves and their often rather untidy or gnarled shape, olives too are a plant well worth considering. Olives are best grown in a large container unless you have a warm garden and a very well-drained soil as they hate winter wet. eden hall

A couple of weeks ago, I was lucky enough to spend the day with a friend at Eden Hall, good company, great food and blissful relaxation are the order of the day here.
T
he atmosphere is sleepy, wandering around in a robe all day, even to the delicious lunch, champagne and strawberries in the afternoon in the conservatory, and a snooze on the lawn in the bright sunshine! I cant promise the sunshine, but I can promise that you will leave Eden Hall feeling as though you truly did walk into the garden of Eden, relaxed, refreshed and revitalized! Spending the day alternating between divinely scented steam rooms, and foot spas,

indulging in a tropical rain shower and drying off in the sauna. Moving through into the swimming pool with the massaging water jets, and outside into the Jacuzzis or for a little sunbathing. The morning seems to stretch before us and there’s loads of time to go round twice, leaving us feeling really clean and bright and shiny! It felt like forever till lunch and it was wonderful to just put the cares of my everyday world away for the day and concentrate on recharging my batteries. Lunch is served in one of several dining rooms, everyone sits in big, fluffy robes, (supplied by EH), with a mixture of waitress

exactly the thing to do, lots of plush blankets were around the sofas and it was all too easy to have forty winks! Isn’t that what Sunday afternoons used to be for?
What to do now, we asked ourselves, with an hour or so to spare, before our pre booked treatments? We sat and chatted and just enjoyed the beautiful surroundings and ambiance, as we were just too sleepy to do much else. Having spent all that time relaxing, all we wanted to do was nod off, and looking around that was

147 not out Ok so it’s not one of those special numbers – we have to wait another 3 years for that – but it would have been a grand score for any Englishman in Australia last winter and it’s an equally fine prompt for you to visit Heckington Show at the end of July. And yes, this year brings the 147th Show – again promising the kind of English summer weekend that here in Lincolnshire is as memorable as Strawberries, Wimbledon or even a century at Lords.
T
he huge growth in visitor numbers since the millennium is a great headline. People keep coming back and telling their friends to come too, but it also drives the show forward. For example Leicester Tigers Rugby Club who are used to an international stage are back for a 3rd show with their interactive stand which your children will certainly enjoy. Established parts of the show also look to improve every year – meaning this year’s Firework Concert (on Saturday evening) will feature not only a traditional proms performance but also brings country music and big band sounds to ensure your late-night picnic goes with a bang. So what else is new for 2014? Among other things you will find a Beauty Zone, a more accessible Countryside Area and the renowned Coventry Corps of Drums to entertain Saturday’s main ring crowds. The show also welcomes Stampede for their first stunt display in Heckington - bringing a new take on jousting following TV credits for Merlin and Dr Who. For younger audiences the ever popular Chaos team from Cambridge University are back with an amazing science marquee packed with experiments and, more to the point, students able to explain what it all means. 56
These are some new reasons for joining us on 26th and 27th July but we also believe the show’s popularity depends equally on old favourites which combine to give that relaxed and almost
magical atmosphere which flows through the showground over the whole weekend. The main ring brings thrills and power one minute – with displays like J C Balls Dancing Diggers – and rural tranquility the next with our perennial Heavy Horse and Livestock parades. A tour of the 60 acre grounds will encounter traditions exemplified by our flower and horticulture marquee within just a few yards of fabulous music from our concert marquee or a selection of delicious foods from Lincoln Red Burgers to Frozen Yoghurts. Relax for a moment to the
mellow tones emanating from the prize livestock – you can even watch the judging as you pass - before spotting an unusual gift or great bargain at one of our 200 trade stands. Developers spend millions to create this kind of combined entertainment complex yet none have matched the unique mix that is Heckington Show. Everything is so accessible, everyone really wants you to have a good time and even the
setting is idyllic. The combination just brings the best out of people - to the many volunteers who bring this weekend together, to the thousands who now take part – running, riding, baking, growing, breeding, cooking, painting – or those who want to visit, discover and experience this amazing 147th Show, more details on www.heckingtonshow.org.uk.

Summer time is for enjoying the open-air. With long (hopefully sunny!) days stretching ahead and the school holidays looming, it’s time to plan. There is a wealth of great outdoor events coming up and there really is something for everyone. Outdoor theatre lovers are well catered for with two productions of Macbeth. One at Thoresby Courtyard 2nd – 5th July tickets available from the box office 01623 822009 and at Chapel Farm Barn, Upton 9th – 12th July with tickets from 01636 679000. Looking further ahead, take the children to The Jungle Book in the grounds of Kelham Hall Country Park on 2nd August tickets 01636 980000 and for Jane Austen fans there is a production of Sense and Sensibility at the same venue on 31st August. Notts. Wildlife Trust is conducting a guided walk around Collingham at 7pm on July 8th. Just turn up at the Medical Centre car park. For other guided walks, call in and pick up a programme from us. Bring your teddy to the Teddy Bears Picnic at White Post Farm 12-13th July and meet Fireman Sam throughout the day on 30th. Open gardens are always popular and you can get the NGS yellow guide from us for all opening times in our area. Look out for village open gardens and visit the Japanese Garden and 58
Meditation Centre at North Clifton to enjoy its tranquil setting and traditional garden elements of water, bridges and bamboo. Remember the Summer Sunday Band concerts in Newark Castle gardens start on 6th July where you can relax and enjoy great music for free in the sunshine with ice cream available to purchase on site. Of course you shouldn’t miss the annual Robin Hood Festival at Sherwood Forest 4-10th of August. You can see jousting and hand to hand combat, meet costumed characters and listen to medieval music. There will be falconry displays, craft stalls and activities. It’s the 30th year of the festival and you can find out more on www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/robinhood . Sherwood Pines is the home of Go Ape and the Forest Segway. Be daring! Live adventurously! Or just enjoy a cycle ride with the family on the marked paths with lunch at the café to follow. Grimsthorpe Festival 2014: Set to be even bigger and better This August Bank Holiday Monday, 25th August see's the return of Grimsthorpe Festival! An eclectic and dynamic summer festival disguised as a country fair. A very English open air party for the whole family!
T
his unique event is charming and irresistible, where music-lovers share cheese and cucumber sandwiches with a bottle of real ale from the Beer Tent with well-known bands and artists, aristocracy, classic car and motorcycle enthusiasts, rockers, poets, fun runners, dancers, townies, graffiti artists and the lovely ladies who make the exceedingly good cupcakes. In short, Grimsthorpe Festival represents classic summer entertainment for a vibrant and friendly crowd from all walks of life. Held in the beautiful grounds of Grimsthorpe Castle Estate near Bourne, pioneering contemporary music and art meets traditional rural entertainment. This year’s event is set to be even bigger and better than ever before. This year Grimsthorpe Festival is raising money and awareness for a number of charities including St John Ambulance, Help for Heroes and Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance. The last Grimsthorpe Festival was a huge hit, seeing around 20,000 festival-goers make their way to Grimsthorpe Castle for this amazing event. Founder and organiser Daniel Sumpton said: "Last year’s Grimsthorpe was amazing, and for this year’s Festival I am opening an additional car park to get all the vehicles in to the event quicker. It is important that we keep developing the Festival each year, and so I am introducing lots of new side shows and workshops to entertain our lovely visitors.
