Karols Korner Use Locally is expanding and this month we welcome Nikki Brown to the team. Nikki joins us with extensive experience in creating eye catching and effective advertising solutions and has many years of experience in the field. Also this month a review of a hidden gem in Newark – Koinonia restaurant and also the fabulous Titanic Spa – is it too early to mention Christmas? This spa is a real slice of heaven and would make perfect gifts for anyone in your life, including gents for Fathers Day! Getting ready for the summer holidays too, have a look at the What’s on section and finally make sure to read through about shopping in Newark – there may be a new favourite shop waiting to be discovered! Have a great June!

John has some fabulous tools and techniques for revitalising what you have and making it fresh and exciting For the Gamers amongst you, a trip to Reload is a must and their prices compete very favourably with on line retailers, the service is second to none and delivery exceeded my son’s expectations – wow even got some additional points for that one! Designer labels for men and women can be found and a trip into Jane Young or Shirtsleeves or Masdings is compulsory, especially if it’s a special occasion or something you want to last a long time for work – think about price per wear – a great way of rationalising the expenditure! GH Porters Provisions one of the most iconic buildings in Newark market place is having its historic façade restored as part of a major refurbishment to mark the 125th anniversary of the famous delicatessen and smokehouse. The impetus for the makeover comes from new owner Tom Blakemore a local food connoisseur with a great nose for fine food and customer service. New product CHALK BLEND Is a new product for painters of vintage, retro and shabby chic items. Chalk blend is a powder which when mixed with traditional off the shelf emulsion will create a finished look to rival expensive pre-mixed chalk paints. The end result is a lovely smooth feeling finish which is durable yet easy to distress. The item painted will look very authentically old, yet fresh. Many people are looking for a colour which will match their existing walls or other items. So for example they have used an economy own brand emulsion or a high end Farrow and Ball or a Trade Emulsion they can add Chalk Blend to there chosen emulsion and create there own matched chalk paint. If you have some some spare paint left over you can add Chalk Blend which is a incredibly cheap method of creating an expensive looking result. Also it saves you wasting any leftover paints and gives you so much flexibility on colour. Call in to Newark Paint and Hardware and see Jon for more information. info@newarkph.com Newark Paint & Hardware 83 Appleton Gate, Newark-On-Trent 01636 672159

B&G HR Limited This month I’d like to introduce you to Blue, my Siberian Husky. Blue is 9 now and a real gentleman. As soon as we get to the May bank holiday to Blue’s dismay we start to think about our annual holiday. We really ought to book somewhere he can come as well! At this time of year many employees start booking annual holiday and since there were some Employment Law changes this April I thought we could talk about this in this edition. In the UK employees are entitled to 4 weeks basic statutory annual leave, which they cannot “buy out” of nor carry forward. In addition to this, they are also entitled to additional statutory holiday of 1.6 weeks, which once again they cannot “buy out” of but can carry forward with the employers’ permission. Arrangements for holiday entitlement and carryover of holidays will all be set out in the contract of employment or leave policies. Although this is the maximum statutory holiday entitlement employees can have, an employer may offer additional contractual annual leave, where they can set their own rules about how this is paid when it can be taken and carried forward etc. In terms of calculations for holiday pay, rulings (the ruling applies only to the first four weeks of statutory holiday) have been made with regard to work that is intrinsically linked to the performance of tasks required to be undertaken by the employee, for example, commission payments, guaranteed compulsory overtime, nonguaranteed overtime which employers are not obliged to offer but a worker has to work if its offered and incentive bonus arrangements which should now also be included in holiday pay calculations, don’t forget this also includes bonuses for team performances. Additional guidance is not likely to be published for some months yet, which makes it hard for employers to decide what to do going forwards. So as an employer what should I

do now? First of all, gather some data into a spreadsheet showing overtime, commission and other payments made to your employees over the last holiday year, so you have a clear picture of what was paid and when. If you only pay basic salaries, and have no other payments, then you can rest easy, as this won’t affect you. Also look out your holiday records for last year. If following this exercise you think you may have a potential issue consider the following:• Overtime: look at your current working practices - is overtime running at too high a rate? Consider whether this is really needed on a regular basis going forwards. Do you need tighter management control?

• Commission: might you be better building some of this into basic salary? Or changing your commission structure so that payments are not regular? • Other payments: consider whether these are really working to incentivise your employees, or whether they have become just guaranteed, regular payments. • Taking of holiday: you might want to review your rules on this in order to spread holiday more evenly over the year? • Documentation: review your contracts, handbook and policies - you might want to reconsider your wording on overtime and additional hours, and also how you will pay holiday and your rules for taking this. • Family leave: consider those on family leave (eg maternity, shared parental, paternity, adoption) to ensure that your holiday pay is calculated on weeks worked, rather than periods of family leave paid at lower rates. This will be particularly important for those on shared parental leave, when the blocks of leave may be shorter and more easily overlooked. Having looked at your liabilities and your potential for reducing these, the key question is should you act now or wait until later? As always, the answer will depend on the business - and the potential effect of these rulings. It's hard to advise, and each case will depend so much on the amount and frequency of additional payments: if these are regular, and required for good business reasons going forwards, and your current payment schemes work to incentivise your employees, then acting now may be the best route. Talk to you again next month, in the meantime, Blue says “bless og hamingjusamur frídagur“ – (Icelandic for goodbye and happy holidays). Carole Broad Director

The apartments are spacious and well appointed, with kitchen & living areas and those sumptuous bedrooms. Elemis products are supplied in your apartment for showering etc. DVDS are available from reception so as after dinner you can curl up on the comfy sofa and chill out even more. We managed to have another steam room session on the morning before we left, so as we had maximum benefit from our 24 hours. The OH felt compelled to swim & try the gym out, and I watched from the pool jacuzzi. For anyone who visits spas occasionally, I suggest trying the overnight stay at the Titanic. Delicious food, excellent service, it has to be Koinonia On a windy night a couple of weeks ago, I went off to review Koinonia in St Marks Place, Newark. As far as I was aware this would be a review of an Indian restaurant, and as much as I love Indian food I didn’t really have any expectation of anything being out of the ordinary. How wrong is it possible to be? From the moment we sat down and looked at the menu, I realised this is not your regular Indian restaurant. For a start, I didn’t recognize anything on the extensive menu and felt rather at sea! What better way to start a meal like this than with the daily special of garlic fish then? This was a dish that arrived in a sauce that was utterly delicious. My dining partner (mum), who is very knowledgeable on Indian food having lived in India for several years, opted for the Nadanchemmeen Fry – a delicious starter of crunchy prawn fry with shallots and masala sauce. Neither mum nor I were aware of this style of Indian food, which is South Indian from the stunningly beautiful Kerala region and is totally different to regular Indian food in taste and appearance. Our main courses were chosen with care as by now we had realised that this is a dining experience rather than just popping out for a curry! My mum recognized Dosa on the menu and was delighted as this is a dish she hasn’t had for years, a Dosa is an Indian sort of pancake, made form lentils, but its light and crispy and delicious. I ordered a lamb dish that was out of this world, the owners Grandmothers’ signature dish, Nadan Earchi kootucurry.

Presentation of all dishes is extremely good and the service is unfailingly polite and courteous. Even the coffee was good! This is a very easy review to write as this meal was mouth watering – praise not given out lightly! For those of us that are used to the regular Indian curry at the takeaway or the local restaurant, then you are in for a real treat here at Koinonia. If you are someone who avoids spicy hot foods, you can still visit here, as the food can be made as hot as you like by the chef or indeed with less chili for the lighter palate. If you are a little jaded with the regular styles of restaurants you visit, then again Koinonia is a feast not only of food but also for the taste buds and the delight of finding a new favourite eatery. There’s a good vegetarian side to the menu too, not just the token dish for those noncarnivores! And a large fish section so as you can enjoy a lighter meal as well. Pop in for lunch on your days in Newark, or make sure to enjoy an evening meal. Weekends are great for families, but be sure to book for peak times. Larger parties can be catered for upstairs in the private function

room which seats up to 40 people – very handy for events and parties and the Gilstrap Centre. Koinonia restaurant is found at 19 St. Mark’s Lane, Newark-on-Trent, NG24 1XS. Telephone 01636 706230 to book a table and its just opposite the Asda car park heading in to The Market Square. Open Monday – Thursday 11.30 – 15.00 & 18.00 – 22.00; Friday 11.30 – 15.00 & 18.00 – 23.00; Saturday 11.30 – 23.00; Sunday 11.30 – 19.30.

ENRICH A YOUNG PERSON’S LIFE, AND YOURS Consider a career in Foster Caring With a shortage of foster carers in Nottinghamshire, Foster Care Associates (FCA) wants to hear from potential foster families who are keen to make a difference and provide a safe and stable home to young people in the region. FCA’s warm-hearted, yet resilient foster carers provide a safe and stable home to dozens of children and young teenagers in the region ensuring that they receive the love, respect and care they need. Claire Hobson, Fostering Service Manager from FCA in Nottingham, said: “We’re continually seeking to attract new carers with a spare bedroom who believe they have the patience, understanding and determination to make a difference to young people’s lives, and also enrich their own. “In Nottinghamshire we’d really like to hear from potential foster carers to take on some of our teenagers. These could range from vulnerable teenagers, to young mothers who want to be fostered with their own birth child.” According to FCA there are many factors that make up an ideal candidate – everything from being adaptable, resilient and nurturing, to being a good listener and having a flexible response to a young person’s needs. The 28

fostering agency often finds that those with experience of working in sectors including teaching, the military or even the police have the valuable transferable skills to become great foster carers.

provides ongoing support and generous fees to all of its carers throughout the UK, and is dedicated to providing all the advice they need to make a positive impact on the children they look after.

From the very beginning FCA Anyone interested in fostering is invited to come along to one FCA’s many fostering information events. To discover upcoming events in Nottingham please visit www.thefca.co.uk/our-events or call 0800 022 4011 to find out more about becoming a foster carer.

Admit Defeat

Call a Professional By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk Not so many years ago, women gave up work as soon as they were married. Even before they had children, their duty was to run the house, and it was a full time job. With the advent of labour saving devices such as the vacuum cleaner, washing machine, tumble dryer and electric iron, much of the work could be carried out in a fraction of the time. In theory then, everything in our homes is spick and span, because we have so much more time. In practice it’s quite a different story.

So the little jobs pile up. You notice it, it nags away at you, you are going to get round to doing it…but you don’t. It’s time to call The Professionals. 36 Your banner here? Phone for more info: 01529 469 526 / 07527 006737

For women particularly, few have the luxury of not working at all just because they are married. Even if children come along, once they start school Mum will be looking for something part time. Furthermore, outside of working hours, both men and women want to spend their spare time doing something interesting and enjoyable, spending time with each other and with their family. Household and garden chores rarely appear on the ‘let’s have fun’ list.

Oven Cleaning When you’ve cooked a delicious family roast dinner, or made a bubbling apple crumble, what you are supposed to do is thoroughly wipe down the oven afterwards. However, having eaten a big meal and naturally preferring to sit down with your family or just relax and let your food digest, it’s a chore enough just to do the post-meal clear up. Cleaning the oven is often at best D VXSHUÀFLDO ZLSH RYHU Still the time comes when it needs to be done thoroughly so off you trot to buy caustic and toxic sprays and gels, rubber gloves and then dedicate an afternoon to doing it. It’s really boring and generally the result is ‘okay’ but not great. The Professionals: An oven cleaning company will do the job in a couple of hours and it’s no exaggeration to say your oven will look like it’s brand new. Every aspect – the sides, top and bottom, and those tricky wire racks will be gleaming. You’ll want to leave the oven door open just so everyone can see how immaculate and shiny it is! You can also ask for the hob and the extractor hood to be cleaned too. Small Clothes Repairs Those trousers that were always too long, that favourite skirt that needs taking in (or letting out!), the nearly new jumper with loose buttons, or that seam that has mysteriously ripped. Admit it, you have a little pile of clothes needing some TLC and you are going to mend them as soon as you can ÀQG \RXU UHDGLQJ JODVVHV WKH ULJKW FRORXU WKUHDG D QHHGOH ZLWK D KROH ELJ HQRXJK WR be seen without a microscope. The Professionals: Most dry cleaners do repairs, and there are often people who do small repairs like this from home, for a very reasonable price. It’s such a relief to hand little jobs like that over to someone else (who can usually do a neater job anyway) and it’s really not expensive work. Bin Cleaning Many councils have now moved to an arrangement whereby collection of household waste is on a weekly alternating schedule with recycling. You might not like it, but you

HOW TO PROFIT FROM A ‘PROPERTY PENSION’ Belvoir provides a simple step by step guide on how to maximise rental ‘yields’ This year could see one of the greatest ever surges in the thriving buy to let investment market, as more and more people are viewing property as a viable way to provide financial security in retirement.

T

he Government’s wellpublicised pension reforms that came into effect in April will give savers unprecedented access to their ‘nest eggs’ and the freedom to seek out alternatives to conventional pension plans, such as annuities and income drawdown. In addition, rising or stable residential property prices in some parts of the country are providing potential for attractive ‘yields’ from buy to let and national, award winning lettings specialist, Belvoir, is offering expert guidance to anyone new to the sector. Angela Maclean who owns the Belvoir office on 24 Carter Gate in Newark says: “By investing in property, pension savers can not only avoid significant fund fees or commissions but, by making all the right decisions, they can secure income and growth from tangible ’bricks and mortar’ assets over the longer term.

network of 160 offices, adds: “Generally, new buy to let investors can benefit from two different investment strategies either looking to achieve relatively small rental returns in an area which has large capital growth or, alternatively, investment in areas and properties known to produce a high income. “But in both instances, ‘rental yields’ derived from investment in rental property are crucial to measuring success and need to be fully understood and properly calculated.” Angela explains, “Rental yields come in two forms – gross and net – and whilst neither can be 100 per cent accurate, they still provide the best possible barometer of success for investment landlords.

“Savings invested in property can provide a regular income in the form of rent. Properties in an investor’s portfolio should also retain value for when the time comes to sell.”

“Any buy to let investor is more likely to succeed if they adopt a professional approach. At Belvoir, we recommend that all our landlords conduct regular rental yield calculations and store their results on an excel spreadsheet for year on year analysis. It is good practice and something we are happy to help with and advise on.

Dorian Gonsalves, Commercial Director of Belvoir’s UK wide

“In this current economic climate, buy to let investors

40

have the potential to achieve much higher returns than by putting their funds into a traditional bank account with very low interest rates,” adds Angela. “Whilst we are not in a position to offer financial advice, we can share our knowledge and experience of the local property market. We also work very closely with regulated financial advisors and wealth management experts who can be called upon for specific guidance on aspects of tax and financial planning.“ In this following brief guide, Belvoir explains the simple steps a buy to let investor needs to take to work out potential ‘yields’. What is a Gross Rental Yield? • This is the expected annual rental income of a property expressed as a percentage of the total property value. • Whilst not being wholly accurate in terms of what you receive, it can provide a good yardstick for comparison and increases the likelihood of a successful venture. How is it calculated? • Firstly, establish a probable monthly rent – this can be done by looking at similar properties in the area. If you’re unsure, ask at your local Belvoir office. • From this, calculate the likely

This is the Gross Rental Yield. Once you’ve calculated the gross yield look at how this figure compares with other property averages - both locally and nationally. “We advise all landlords to conduct gross rental yield calculations on a variety of properties before making a purchase. “The first property you see may be the one that tempts you into the sector but it may not always be the best investment. Buy-tolet can be very profitable but only if researched thoroughly and treated like any other business opportunity,” says Angela. What is the Net Rental Yield ? • This is a calculation of the total rent received minus the expenses that the property incurs expressed as a percentage of the total property value. • If your expense costs are accurate this is a very easy way to monitor the profitability of your purchase. How is it calculated? • Firstly, take the monthly rental amount, which will be listed in the tenancy agreement for the property. • Next, multiply this by 12 to establish a yearly income. • Then, subtract any percentage of the year that the property may be unoccupied (if applicable). • Add together the yearly outgoing costs – e.g. insurance

premiums, replacement of fixtures and fittings, periodical property redecoration, maintenance, ground rent (if the property is leasehold) and the lettings agency costs, etc. • Then, subtract the total outgoings from the yearly income to determine the net income. • Lastly, divide your net income by the total property value and multiply this by 100 to get a percentage figure. This is the Net Rental Yield - the return on your investment. And finally… Once the net rental yield is

established the investor needs to compare it with any initial target or expectations set – and discuss the outcome with an expert. “At Belvoir we always strive to achieve the best returns for our landlords and we can offer friendly and expert advice on how to maximise yields,” adds Angela. “Prospective landlords keen to know more about any aspect of buy to let investment can contact us for a free, initial consultation and assessment of their goals.”

Home & Interiors The Kings of Bling

The French kings of the 17th and 18th centuries KDG HQRUPRXV LQĂ XHQFH RQ aristocratic interiors. For elegance, luxury and splendour, look no further than the styles of Louis XIV, XV and XVI, writes Katherine Sorrell The year: 1681. The place: the royal court in France. And, according to King Louis XIV who had assumed power two years earlier: ‘There is nothing that indicates more clearly the PDJQLĂ€FHQFH RI JUHDW SULQFHV than their superb palaces and their precious furniture.’ The king was inspired to adapt a small hunting lodge just RXWVLGH 3DULV H[WHQG LW DQG Ă€OO it with splendid decoration and furnishings, all in order to glorify his monarchy. Its style was the most up-to-date possible, a new fashion known as Baroque - dramatically dazzling and opulent, epitomised by jewellike colours, large furniture in bulbous shapes, trompe l’oeil paintwork and glittering silver, gold and crystal. The new palace was called Versailles. The interior of Versailles was Ă€OOHG ZLWK IXUQLWXUH PDGH in specialist workshops by WKH Ă€QHVW QDWLYH DQG IRUHLJQ artisans. shapes, upholstered with velvet and brocade, and inlaid with exotic materials such as marble, silver, ivory, lapis lazuli and agate. There were fabrics woven with silver or gold thread, lavish rugs and walls hung with tapestries or covered in marble or mirror. Perhaps most extreme of all was the specially commissioned furniture and lighting made of silver. It was XWWHUO\ PDJQLĂ€FHQW Fashions are forever changing however, and by the turn of the 18th century Louis XIV was urging a ‘graceful and airy’ style on his granddaughter-in-law. After his death in 1715 the court moved to Paris, where a less ceremonial lifestyle developed, with smaller rooms and lighter furniture. Known as Rococo, it was frivolous and exuberant, all delicate curves and asymmetrical lines while, overall, homes were arranged to be comfortable rather than impressive, colours and patterns soft and feminine. The typical Rococo home featured elaborate plasterwork and carved, painted and gilded wooden panels, walls hung with imported silk or hand-painted ZDOOSDSHUV DOO UHĂ HFWHG LQ ornamental mirrors. Furniture often had a curving front and – most typically of all – cabriole legs. Also known as Louis Quinze style, Rococo was at its height

in France in the 1740s. Within a decade or so, however, a move towards simplicity, combined with a revival of classical forms gave rise to another new look. In England, it was known as neo-classical; in France, Louis Seize. By the time Louis XVI ascended the throne in 1774 this style was dominant, and he and his wife Marie Antoinette were keen patrons. While luxury and elegance were still key, somewhat plainer, even geometric designs replaced elaborate decorations, while straight lines and symmetry took over from curves and arabesques. Key pieces included chairs with horseshoe-shaped backs and tapering, column-shaped legs, striped fabrics and wallpapers, and elaborate window treatments featuring swags and tails. Furniture was grouped sociably rather than placed around the edges of the room, and even featured comfortable, sprung-cushioned upholstery. Louise Seize style could be summed up by two words: expensive simplicity. But it was not to last. In 1793 Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were guillotined. Two years later, the French revolutionary government was established, the Directory, lending its name WR WKH ÀQDO SKDVH RI QHR classicism: Directoire style, sparse, simple and notable for its lack of ornamentation. Bewilderwood The ideal day out for children Bewilderwood is a wild and imaginative adventure park with magical tree houses and a hint of intriguing characters, bringing a curious difference to the Norfolk Broads. Based on the book, 'A Boggle at BeWILDerwood' by children’s author Tom Blofeld The setting for the book, is a wonderful, mystical land of brave, adventurous creatures who you may never see anywhere else in our world. Parents are encouraged to play alongside their children, which makes for a fabulous and brilliantly exciting day out for the whole family! When we first arrived we boarded a boat to take us through the Long Lagoon into the sccaaaaary lake, whilst on the boat we were told an enchanting story about the Twiggles that lived in the trees and the Boggles that lived in the Marshes.....we also saw the Boggles little village and Grandpa Boggles rocking chair! My children spent the whole day looking for the Twiggles in the trees, great fun! Sooo cute! When we got off the boat the kids went wild, it was a great adventure......we went on the Sky Maze.....which was brilliant!

balancing obstacles. The story telling was fab.....they got all the children on stage to interact with the story......cute and funny all in one. We did manage to take a break and have some food from the Munch Bar, which was very good quality and very reasonably priced too. As we went on the Easter weekend we had the Bouncing Boggle Bunny Egg hunt to do, and we went into The Big Hat where we got crafty making Easter bunnies and cards that we took to show Cedric the Easter Bunny he liked what we made so much he gave us some chocolate eggs.... yum! We could have also hired bikes but unfortunately we ran out of time..... but definitely plan on doing this when we go again! There was so much to do and we all had a brilliant day, I would recommend Bewilderwood to families and children of all ages, and we cant wait to go again!

ata Sherwood Pines

There were the wobbly wires (zip wires) and Slippery Slopes (several slides.... some more daring than others) a treacherous trail, Rope Bridges.... the Broken bridge was a bit scary.... but brilliant. We loved the tree houses, swings and

S & P Garages LTD Quality and value – A family business you can be proud to take your business to. Sometimes on the back of a disaster a silver lining can be found. This is how S & P garages came to be. The previous H & L Garages, went into administration and out of the ashes Peter Frohmaier and his wife Sarah, took over the reins of a Mercedes servicing and repair workshop with the ethos of great customer service at very reasonable prices. Peter knew that there was a gap in the market for this sort of service and with 7 of the staff from H & L, set out to fill the gap. Today S & P have expanded massively into the field to provide the area with both fleet, van and car servicing with genuine parts direct from the manufacturer. The team has grown to 17 members of staff, all committed to providing their customers with high levels of service and ensuring customer satisfaction. S & P are authorized to complete warranty repairs and servicing by both Mercedes Benz and Mitsubishi The latest development at S & P is to enhance their servicing and repairs with offering used cars for sale. This has been such a successful arm of the business that Peter has now a specialised site for the sales on Outer Circle Road next to the Lincolnshire Co-op filling station. I speak from personal experience that S & P can source all types of cars according to your spec, as I purchased a car from Peter for my son. I had absolute trust that this car was safe and reliable and that for me was terribly important for my son doing long miles every week. Servicing takes place within their specialised workshops where Peter has invested heavily in specialised equipment to ensure that

diagnostics are fast and accurate and costs kept down as much as possible. The family business prides itself on excellent customer service and value for money servicing and repairs. When the time comes to search for a new vehicle, you can be sure that whichever vehicle you are looking for – Mercedes or a different brand you will find excellent standards of customer service and that S & P go the extra mile. I know because my son sat in their office and used their computers to organise his insurance, before driving away in his shiny, safe and economical new (to him) car. With an ethos such as this why would you go anywhere else? S & P can be found at Outer Circle Road in Lincoln, or see their advert for further contact details.

Motoring Top 5 Eco Cars

By James Baggott @CarDealerEd

As the costs to run our beloved petrol- and diesel-powered cars increase, it’s no wonder we’re all on the hunt for an alternative solution. With electric and hybrid powertrains driving some of the industry’s most esteemed supercars – the new Honda NSX and BMW i8 – it would appear that there is another way forward. But if eco is at the forefront of your mind, which car should you have on your driveway? Here are our choices.

Ford Fiesta The Fiesta is the best selling car on the market – and not ZLWKRXW JRRG UHDVRQ $OWKRXJK LW¡V QRW ODEHOOHG DQ RIĂ€FLDO ‘eco’ car, its low running costs make it the ideal cost-effective solution for most buyers. Choose the 1.4-litre TDCi, priced from ÂŁ13,065, and you can expect an average mileage of 68mpg and emissions of 107g/km.

Fiat 500 The Fiat 500 completes the ‘Thee Musketeers’ line-up, alongside the Mini and VW Beetle, as one of today’s most stylish cars. Running a 1.2-litre engine, the 500 TwinAir can achieve 49.6 urban mpg and dodges road tax by emitting just 95g/km of CO2. The TwinAir is priced from ÂŁ12,715 and is the perfect city run around.

BMW i3 BMW’s futuristic i3 is one of just a few cars that has revolutionised the way we view the future of motoring. Not only does it combine eco-friendly driving with premium qualities, it can also reach 93mph, can go from 0-60mph in 7.9 seconds and has a driving range of 106 miles, thanks to its on-board petrol motor, which works alongside a 127kW electric unit. Sadly, its £29,130 price means we don’t see many of them on the road.

Volkswagen E-Up! The E-Up! is one of the most practical and reasonably-priced HOHFWULF FDUV RQ WKH PDUNHW ZLWK ÀYH GRRUV DQG DQ HVWLPDWHG driving range of 93 miles. It takes six hours to recharge and has a comfortable top speed of 81mph. The price isn’t so attractive at £19,525, but this electric motor is close to feeling more like the average supermini.

Renault Twizy Renault’s Twizy is just as fun as it looks. It may be the slowest of the pack, with a top speed of just 56mph, but it’s guaranteed to provide you with the most entertainment. Priced at £7,795, its 15kW battery takes four hours to charge, it has a driving range of 62 miles and emits zero emissions. And just look at its styling! 62
