Staying In Or Leaving The EU

What are the implications for your personal ďŹ nances?

With so much speculation about the economic implications of leaving the EU, you are probably wondering what the effect will be on your personal ÀQDQFHV ZKHWKHU ZH VWD\ RU go.

The problem is there’s a lack of hard data or previous experience on which to model ÀQDQFLDO SUHGLFWLRQV IRU OHDYLQJ the EU, so clear judgement is already hampered. David Cameron’s negotiations at the summit earlier this year mean that we retain the pound if we stay in Europe.

Many top business people and SROLWLFDO ÀJXUHV DUH FDPSDLJQLQJ strongly to leave, and envision a more stable UK having regained our independence - negotiating trade deals on our own terms, and taking back the control we once had.

SO WHAT ISSUES SHOULD WE BE THINKING ABOUT? To provide a clearer picture of the issues involved when thinking about the pound in your pocket, we’ve covered a few of the areas that would experience the biggest impact should we exit, as well as providing some of the expert opinions aired in the media over the last few months on: • The value of the pound • The state of the property market • Fuel prices

A MAJORITY VOTE TO LEAVE THE EU The value of sterling At the start of 2016, sterling fell to its lowest level for 10 years against the dollar, largely due to the uncertainty surrounding our membership of the European Union. In general, a weaker VWHUOLQJ EULQJV KLJKHU LQĂ DWLRQ and reduced purchasing power for consumers, but low value might only be an issue during the transition period rather than in the long-term.

Others have suggested that being independent of Europe would allow us to forge our own way without impedance, taking more control over how sterling fares in the markets. In fact, former CBI leader, John Longworth, recently expressed his personal view that the UK’s future would be “brighter� if we left Europe.

The property market Earlier this year, online estate agents eMoov surveyed 1,000 homeowners about the impact of an exit on property prices.

55% of people thought an exit would affect the price of their property with 34% of this number suggesting that it could increase the value of their home.š eMoov say that the general economic uncertainty might dissuade would-be purchasers from making such a huge ÀQDQFLDO GHFLVLRQ ZKLFK FRXOG then reduce overall demand.

Fuel prices The Automobile Association claims that petrol prices would rise by nearly 19p per litre soon after an exit vote.2 Their calculation was based on a report by Goldman Sachs,

which estimated a 20% fall in the value of the pound, and a tripling of oil prices.

If this sounds like a huge increase you might be right; however, the RAC suggests that even if sterling did fall in value, fuel prices would not be dramatically affected by the drop.

VOTING TO STAY At the EU summit in February, David Cameron secured ‘special status’ for the UK in Europe. This includes exemption from the ‘ever closer union’ which would involve greater political integration of member states - one of the original intentions of the EU’s founders.

The Prime Minister also DWWDLQHG VSHFLĂ€F UHFRJQLWLRQ that the euro was not the sole currency within the Union, protecting the existence of sterling now and in the future.

World Blood Donor Day

World Blood Donor Day on 14th June is an annual World Health Organisation event. This year’s campaign celebrates blood donors, highlighting the idea that blood connects us all. It seeks to raise awareness of the need for regular blood donation, inspiring more people to become blood donors.

Why Should You Give Blood? ,W¡V HDV\ WR ÀQG UHDVRQV not to donate, but also easy to assume blood will be available if we need it.

However, in the UK we need over 6,000 people to give blood every day to meet our needs; around 67% is used to treat medical conditions, 27% in surgery (including emergencies) and 6% to treat blood loss after childbirth.

Who Can Give Blood? ,I \RX¡UH ÀW KHDOWK\ DJHG to 66 and weigh over 7 stone 12lbs or 50kg, you should be able to start donating blood.

Men can give blood every 3 months and women, every 4 months.

However, some things can affect your eligibility, such as organ transplantation, travel to certain countries and existing medical conditions.

You can check your eligibility on the NHS webpage www. blood.co.uk/who-can-giveblood.

Preparing To Give Blood You can register online at www.blood.co.uk, by calling 0300 123 2323, or at a blood donation session. To donate, book an appointment or drop in at your next local session.

To make your donation as comfortable as possible, ensure that beforehand you: • Eat regularly. • Get a good night’s sleep. ‡ 'ULQN SOHQW\ RI à XLGV EXW avoid alcohol for 24 hours). • Wear loose, comfortable clothing. • Avoid unusually strenuous exercise. • Know your medical and travel history.

What Happens When You Donate Blood Pre-booked appointments shouldn’t take over an hour; take a friend or book to distract you if you’re nervous.

You’ll be given a drink to keep you hydrated. Your identity and health check details will EH FRQÀUPHG DQG \RXU LURQ levels will be checked by WHVWLQJ EORRG IURP \RXU ÀQJHU A small cuff is placed on your arm to maintain a light pressure and the donation site will be cleaned with

antiseptic before the needle, connected to a blood bag with your unique donor number, is inserted.

A special scale constantly measures your donated blood until the 470ml mark is reached, which usually takes 5-10 minutes. You shouldn’t feel any pain. Once the needle is removed, a sterile dressing is applied to your arm.

After Your Donation You should keep the pressure roll on for 30 minutes and the dressing on for 6 hours. You’ll be sent to the refreshment area to relax and encouraged to have a snack and at least 2 drinks before you leave.

You should avoid having a hot bath and using your donation arm for anything strenuous for the rest of the day. Most SHRSOH IHHO ÀQH EXW LI \RX feel dizzy, sick, hot or shaky, GULQN SOHQW\ RI à XLG DQG OLH down until you feel better.

If bleeding recurs, sit down, raise your arm and press on the area until it stops. If you become unwell (other than a cold or cold sore) within 2 weeks, or believe there’s a reason your blood shouldn’t be used, you should call 0300 123 2323.

Croatia The Plitvice Lakes

By Solange Hando Set up in 1949 in northern Croatia, the Plitvice Lakes are the oldest national park in the country and the largest, covering close to 300 square kilometres. There, on the edge of the rugged Dinaric Alps, rocks and water have created a unique landscape protected by UNESCO and one of the most impressive karst formations in the world.

Yet just 400 years ago, the whole area was inaccessible, draped in mystery and legends from buried treasures to the kind-hearted Black Queen who gave water to the poor. In the 18th century, it was described LQ WXUQ DV œÀYH EHDXWLIXO ODNHV in the densest wood’ and ‘the devil’s garden’. But those who come here today know that neither is true: there is no devil in this natural paradise but there are 16 beautiful lakes for all to see.

But nothing beats a leisurely stroll where lush scenery and fresh air quieten mind, body and soul. The lakes beckon, more bewitching the closer you are. Azure, silvery grey, deep blue or emerald green, shimmering in the sun or mirroring a darkening sky, they are for ever changing as light DQG VKDGH ÀOWHU WKURXJK WKH abundant foliage along the banks.

Spring heather, beard grass and mint are also found along the lakes where maple and sumac trees turn all shades of red and gold in autumn.

Wild cats, lynx, deer and wolves all live in the park but the brown bear has become the true symbol of the Plitvice Lakes. Yet visitors on a day trip from the beach are far more OLNHO\ WR VSRW WKH EXWWHUà LHV an Orange Tip, a Painted Lady, a Red Admiral, to name just a few, and at least some of the 105 species of birds, woodpeckers, grebes, larks, ÀQFKHV DQG RWKHUV RU SHUKDSV a rare golden eagle hovering in the thermals high above the glistening lakes.

The twelve upper lakes and four lower lakes are all connected, divided by natural limestone barriers shaped by water, wind and plants and creating myriad waterfalls.

Tackling Troublesome Weeds

by Pippa Greenwood Why is it that weeds always seem to grow faster and more vigorously than pretty well anything you actually choose to plant in your garden?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s certainly the case in my garden! In no time at all they come into growth, produce sizeable leaves and stems and quite often seem to be Ă RZHULQJ DQG WKHQ VHHGLQJ LQ only a few weeks. Top of my weed hate list is that tiny and innocuous looking one called hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta). It produces a rather attractive little rosette of leaves which in no time at all is topped with a short spike with tiny and indeed pretty white Ă RZHUV 6R ZK\ GR , GHVSLVH it? It is simply that it spreads by pinging out its seeds within such a short space of time that if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t pull them up very promptly you soon have what amounts to a forest of these plants all over your garden.

Weeds are typically described as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;any plant which is growing in the wrong placeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and this FRXOG PHDQ \RXU Ă RZHUEHGV your vegetable garden, your shrubbery or even your lawn.

So what is it that makes weeds such a nuisance? â&#x20AC;˘ They feed and take up moisture in great quantities in order to grow in the way they do, and sometimes compete

actively with the nearby garden plants that you are so carefully nurturing. â&#x20AC;˘ Some of them grow so rapidly that they can create shade and so stunt the growth of smaller plants nearby. â&#x20AC;˘ Those which have an almost ground-cover like effect can soon swamp garden plants and cause their growth to be distorted or held back. â&#x20AC;˘ Occasionally weeds may also harbour pests or diseases which can then move on to your garden plants.

Everyone has some weeds in their garden, but what can you do to minimise the problems they cause, yet avoid spending hours on end with a hoe in your hand or a sprayer at your Ă&#x20AC;QJHUWLSV" â&#x20AC;˘ Always try and get on top of weeds early in the year - removing as many as you can before your garden plants start to grow strongly will make weeding easier and also cut down on the amount of competition the weeds cause. A hoe is one of the quickest ways to effectively kill off most annual weeds, but it needs to be a good one. My favourite is UK designed with a heartshaped head and a blade on all edges, meaning that

you are hoeing every time you pull or push the hoe â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it also has a relatively small head to making it easier WR KRH LQ FRQĂ&#x20AC;QHG VSDFHV between plants and in gaps in between rows without risk of damage to your plants. It is D KRH ZH Ă&#x20AC;JKW RYHU DW KRPH Ă&#x20AC;QG RXW PRUH RQ P\ ZHEVLWH â&#x20AC;˘ Disturb the soil as little as possible when you weed, as this often causes more weed seeds to germinate, and even if these have been lying dormant in the soil for some while, as soon as the soil is disturbed they come to life - so if you are not careful you may make the problem worse. â&#x20AC;˘ Some people avoid anything other than an early weeding and a late weeding, as they Ă&#x20AC;QG WKDW UHJXODU ZHHGLQJ seems to bring many more seeds to the surface and encourages weed seed germination; hence it is best to put up with a few weeds during the growing season. â&#x20AC;˘ Whatever you do, it is essential to remove your weeds before they set seed â&#x20AC;&#x201C; that old saying of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;one yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seeds is seven yearsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; weedsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; really is true in many cases. â&#x20AC;˘ Avoid composting any weeds

â&#x20AC;˘ When removing deep-rooted weeds such as dock and dandelion, always make sure that you take out every fragment of root, as each piece left behind has the potential to form a new plant. The best tool I know for removing dandelion roots in one go is my little red-handled weeder â&#x20AC;&#x201C; small but built out of stern stuff and by tucking the hook-like head beneath the rosette of leaves and close to the FHQWUH RI WKH SODQW , Ă&#x20AC;QG LW easy to pull out the root in its entirety almost every time.

â&#x20AC;˘ If you want to sow annuals or vegetable crops directly and minimise later problems with weeds, then try the stale seedbed technique.

All this means is that you get the area in which you intend to sow prepared well in advance of your proposed seed sowing date. This allows dormant weed seeds to germinate so you can then carefully remove the weed seedlings, and then sow or plant up as you wish.

Because you have already UHPRYHG RQH PDMRU Ă XVK of weeds, you tend to have fewer problems later.

Hobbies Why Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll Be Bowled Over By This Popular Game

A team of uniformed players lined up to bowl on a perfectly manicured green is one of the most evocative sights of the summer. Lawn Bowls is a gently-paced team game that â&#x20AC;&#x201C; like cricket matches on the village green â&#x20AC;&#x201C; seems WR UHĂ HFW D %ULWLVK ZD\ RI OLIH that has barely changed in hundreds of years. However, if you have always thought that outdoor bowls is a sport that is exclusive to the United Kingdom, you may be surprised to hear that the game is also played in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa.

Lawn Bowls has become popular for two main reasons: itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a highly social activity, offering a strong sense of camaraderie within the club itself and the potential to develop wider networks through inter-club matches.

It is also accessible to new members, being one of the easiest team sports to pick up (although regulars will tell you it takes time and skill to perfect the techniques required).

The game is played in singles, pairs, triples and four

player teams. Players use weighted bowls known as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;woodsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; that are heavier on one side, giving them a bias.

The bowls are rolled along D Ă DW JUDVV ERZOLQJ JUHHQ towards a smaller ball, or jack, with points scored for the woods that stop closest to the jack. The team captain (or â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;skipperâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;) always plays last and takes responsibility for directing the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shots and tactics. It sounds simple, and it is, but the game also relies on precision, patience and â&#x20AC;&#x201C; occasionally, when a player drives to dislodge an opponentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ball from the jack â&#x20AC;&#x201C; power.

The history of playing bowls goes back to medieval times and the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s oldest surviving bowling green, in 6RXWKDPSWRQ ZDV Ă&#x20AC;UVW XVHG in 1299. The best known historical reference to the sport is probably the story about Sir Francis Drake playing bowls on Plymouth Hoe as the Spanish Armada approached the coast: he was so absorbed in play he is said to have insisted on Ă&#x20AC;QLVKLQJ WKH JDPH FODLPLQJ that he would still have time to beat the Spaniards.

While this story may not be strictly true, it serves to highlight the addictive qualities of the game: apprentices, labourers and servants were banned from playing bowls by successive English kings because it was thought to distract men from their duties and lead them into dissolute company.

Nowadays England is said to have more than 400,000 bowlers, while Scotland has approximately 100,000.

Successful clubs can go on to compete at national and even international level: the World Outdoor Bowls Championships for men and women is held every four years and the next event will take place in Christchurch, New Zealand, from 28 November to 16 December 2016.

Despite its status as one of Great Britainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most popular sports, up to now Lawn Bowls has had the reputation of being more suitable for the older generation. That view has recently been challenged by an upsurge of interest in Barefoot Bowls, a relatively new Australian variant of the game

Use Locally - Issue 38 June 2016 that has attracted more young people to play. Many Australian clubs have been happy to relax their dress code and membership rules in order to appeal to the next generation of players.

Barefoot Bowls uses four players per team with a game length of between 30-60 minutes, although the main objective – to get your bowls as close to the jack as possible – remains the same. In this country Barefoot Bowls has been promoted as a street sport and a tournament held in London last year drew a crowd of more than 150 students and young professionals.

Another more traditional variant of Lawn Bowls is Crown Green Bowls, which adds an additional level of challenge as it is played on an uneven

surface. In France the game of Pétanque is played on a hard dirt or gravel surface, either in public parks or dedicated areas called boulodromes.

Hollow metal balls are bowled towards a ‘cochonnet’ (which translates as ‘piglet’), which is the Gallic version of the British jack. Pétanque is surprisingly popular in the UK too, and the English Pétanque Association website (www. englishpetanque.org.uk) lists 16 regions where the sport is played.

There are thousands of bowling clubs across the UK where you can pick up the basics and eventually go on to play in leagues if you want to take part at a more serious level. The game can be enjoyed at any age (provided you are reasonably

mobile) and you can play all year round, as the sport goes indoors in the winter.

The British Isles Indoor Bowls Council (www.biibc.org.uk) can provide information on indoor clubs while the sports section of the BBC website (www. bbc.co.uk) provides contact information on the various Lawn Bowling associations for England, Scotland and Wales, each with its own search facility WR KHOS \RX ÀQG D ORFDO FOXE No one is said to be more than 15 miles away from their nearest bowling ground, so next time you come across the classic scene of players assembled on a green, don’t MXVW ZDON RQ E\ ÀQG RXW KRZ you can become involved in one of the country’s best loved sports.

BMW At The Movies By James Baggott

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no greater advert for a car than a starring role in a movie â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and for BMW there have been a few!

One of the biggest was when BMW took over the Bond franchise with a centrepiece in 1995 blockbuster GoldenEye. Bond, played by Pierce Brosnan, drives the Ă&#x20AC;UVW JHQHUDWLRQ = ZLWK %RQG girl Natalya Simonova, played

by Izabella Scorupco, in the passenger seat around Cuba EHIRUH WKH Ă&#x20AC;QDO PLVVLRQ $V with many Bond cars, the Z3 was kitted out with the latest gadgets, including a parachute braking system, allpoint radar, missiles housed behind the headlights, and the iconic ejector seat.

With little need for the Z3 in 58

GoldenEye, which involved Bond driving a tank through Moscow, Brosnan returned in Tomorrow Never Dies and WKLV Ă&#x20AC;OP LQFOXGHG RQH RI WKH most impressive Bond cars, thanks to the amount of tech on-board.

Bond was given a 750iL that included bulletproof windows, HOHFWULĂ&#x20AC;HG GRRU KDQGOHV WHDU gas, spike dispenser and missiles concealed in the roof. The most impressive feature of the lot, however, was the fact the car could be remote controlled from a touchpad in Bondâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s phone.

Bond drives the BMW into the assailants before driving off the car park and into a rental FDU VKRS VHYHUDO Ă RRUV EHORZ BMWâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most recent appearance in the Bond franchise was in The World Is Not Enough, and to close the century, BMW provided WKHLU Ă&#x20AC;QDO FDU RI WKH WK century, the Z8 roadster.

With a modern and stylish roadster to accompany RQH RI WKH PRVW VW\OLVK Ă&#x20AC;OP characters, the Z8 was met with an unfortunate end when a helicopter wielding a circular saw cut the car in half at a caviar factory.

6KDPH ,W ZDV Ă&#x20AC;WWHG ZLWK surface-to-air missiles that had taken out a helicopter previously and it even had six cup holders, so it was very useful.

One of its best moments is the chase following the bank robbery, where Frank drives superbly around the streets and ends up jumping off a bridge onto a car transporter lorry.

McElhoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Deirdre, with Robert De Niro pursuing in a Peugeot 406. The M5 dances EHWZHHQ WKH WUDIĂ&#x20AC;F RQ ERWK sides of the road, causing havoc as it drives around the congested city.

Through tunnels and against WKH PRWRUZD\ WUDIĂ&#x20AC;F WKH M5â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sporting pedigree is shown off, with the throaty six-cylinder engine screaming throughout. The only way to take it down was a pot shot IURP -HDQ 5HQR KLWWLQJ RQH of the tyres, causing the M5 WR Ă LS We jump forward a little ZLWK RXU Ă&#x20AC;QDO FDU RQ WKH list to 2011, with the fourth instalment of the Mission: Impossible series. involved one of the best concept designs, the Vision (IĂ&#x20AC;FLHQW'\QDPLF IURP and was the pre-cursor to the i8 electric sports car. ,W ZDV LQYROYHG LQ WKH Ă&#x20AC;QDO DFW where Ethan Hunt, played

by Tom Cruise, needed to LQWHUFHSW WKH Ă&#x20AC;OP¡V SURWDJRQLVW and prevent the start of a nuclear war. The V ED swept in and out of the Mumbai WUDIĂ&#x20AC;F DQG ZLWK D VSHFLDO +8' with navigation screen it looked pretty cool too.

Other honourable mentions for BMW include the black and orange E24 633 CSi from Back to the Future II, the E28 5 Series from The Bourne Supremacy and Robert De Niroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s E31 850i from heist movie, The Score.
