The Battle for Norton Disney’s Archaeology
The ongoing planning battle of a proposed giant rendering plant on top of Potters Hill, Norton Disney has brought into sharp focus the previously unappreciated Iron Age and Roman archaeology that lies in close proximity to the site. The nationally important scheduled ancient monument of a Roman villa was discovered in 1933 and is considered by Historic England, the government agency responsible for it’s welfare an important cultural treasure, telling a story of how Iron Age societies developed once the Romans arrived. It wasn’t until the rendering plant developer was asked to
produce a geophysical survey of the villa site was it realised it’s archaeology covers 6 hectares and its legally protected boundaries were expanded in 2020. However there is far more there. Surrounding the villa site are numerous sites of Iron Age archaeology dating back 2500 years. Even the proposed development site has its own Iron Age settlement and a Roman road leading to the villa. The Norton Disney History and Archaeology group, a band of locals fighting to protect what is there have been actively collecting information and getting it officially recorded for three years. They have
carried out museum visits to find previously unrecorded items from the site, field walking to collect archaeological evidence, conducting geophysical surveys to see what lies below the surface and recently a two day excavation. Our group loves the challenge of discovering what’s here.” “It’s not as romantic as depicted on “Netflix’s “The Dig” but we know that our community better understands and appreciates what’s here now., said Richard Parker, the group’s secretary. “Fingers crossed the planners do too when considering the rendering plant planning application”.

Find out your blood pressure and take steps to bring it down –Your blood pre essure may be a more importa ant factor than your cholessterol! If the doctor prescribes medication take it, but you can also take steps to lower it yourself and maybe reduce the need for medication. The best ways are to exercise and lose some belly fat. Individuals with high levels of fat in the abdominal cavity (belly fat) and around their abdominal organs are more likely to develop high blood pressure because this fat interferes with the function of the kidneys, which regulate the blood pressure.
Know what your HDL number is and then do what you can to raise it to 1.3 mmol/l – In women especially it seems that a higher HDL (good 8
olesterol) number is more mportant than a low LDL ad cholesterol) number. Eat bout 25g of raw, fresh, nsalted nuts per day – pecially walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, pistachios and almonds. Nuts are packed with omega 3 oils, raise levels of HDL good cholesterol, decrease inflammation and have a good effect on the heart. Healthy fats such as olive or rapeseed oil have a positive effect too, and the really good news is that an alcoholic drink per day also works in your favour! Eat a good quality tomato pasta sauce! Simple tomato pasta sauce is loaded with potassium which aids lowering of blood pressure. Floss! – Most people don’t know that your oral health has an effect on arterial health so make sure those pearly whites stay clean and flossed. Limit saturated fat and avoid trans fats –Try to keep saturated fat below 20g per day. Both saturated fat and trans fats (found in many
processed foods) lead to inflammation of the arteries. Read labels and avoid foods which list sugar as one of the first five ingredients –In particular don’t be fooled by foods which claim to be ‘low fat’ because often they contain extra sugar instead. Healthy fats such as olive oil are better than empty sugar calories. Drink wine – But not too much! It’s a slightly bizarre (but consistent scientific truth) that teetotal folk have a higher risk of heart disease than those who drink in moderation. But a glass of red wine occasionally is very different to binge drinking once a week so be careful with this tip. Eat a rainbow of fruit and veg –Five to nine servings a day will help to keep your heart in tip-top condition. It may sound a lot but if you add chopped veg to pie fillings and casseroles and eat fruit at breakfast and salad stuff for snacks it all adds up. By Louise Addison

Five beach reads for the summer Whether you wish to while away the long summer days with a pulsating romance, or prefer a fast-paced thriller, these sizzling reads are as satisfying as a Long Island Iced tea. Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid (June 1) The latest offering from the author of New York Times bestseller Daisy & the Six, this electrifying and supremely glamourous tale follows four famous siblings as they throw an epic party to celebrate the final days of summer. Set in Los Angeles in 1983, Malibu Rising not only dazzles with all the charm and panache of Hollywood in the Eighties, it also carries real depth and emotion as this complicated family implodes from years of lies and deceit. Hush Little Baby by R.H. Herron (May 13) For Jillian Marsh, the life she has meticulously put together following an unbearable childhood is about to collapse as she finds herself pregnant and alone. With her wife (and biological mother of her unborn child) having eloped with another woman, Jillian must work out if the strange things happening around her are part of a vendetta or merely the 10
symptom of an unravelling mind. People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry (May 11) From the bestselling author of Beach Read, this is another mesmerising novel that demands to be read while lazing in the sun, preferably with a pina colada in hand. Perfectly capturing that ageold story of when opposites attract, outgoing travel writer Poppy finds herself inexplicably drawn to her oldest best friend, Alex. With only one week to make her intentions clear on an exotic trip away, this sizzling romance will have you yearning for more. Whereabouts by Jhumpa Lahiri (May 4) From the Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Lowland and Interpreter of Maladies, Lahiri bring us her
first novel in nearly a first decade. Self-translated from Italian into English, the Bengali American author – who moved from USA to Italy in 2011 – has created a work of art that is as disconcerting as it is poetic. Following an unnamed narrator through her day-to-day life in an unnamed city – though clues suggest it is Rome – Whereabouts is a captivating escape from reality as the streets, piazzas, coffee shops and swimming pools of Italy come to life. Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead (May 4) Seasoned novelist Shipstead spans prohibition-era Montana, the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, New Zealand, wartime London and modern-day Los Angeles, Great Circle tells the courageous story of a daredevil female aviator who will stop at nothing to forge her own path through the world.

ARIES
March 21st - April 20th Money could be tight at the beginning of the month. It's best to err on the side of frugality during the first half of May. If you're looking for a job, you could land a lucrative one on the 11th, courtesy of the enriching New Moon. Working for a large organisation like a university, government agency, or hospital is especially favoured.
TAURUS
April 21st - May 21st An authority figure might feel threatened by your powerful charisma in early May. Although it might be difficult to get ahead in your career, you'll be a smashing success on the social front. If you're looking for work, ask a wellconnected friend to set up an interview at their company. They'll be happy to oblige. The New Moon on the 11th is perfect for changing your image.
GEMINI
May 22nd - June 21st It could be difficult to get respect from an expert at the beginning of May. Someone with extensive knowledge in a subject might not think you are serious about this discipline. If you're going to work together, you must be diligent. You'll be more successful in love than work; paying extra attention to your appearance will attract the attention of several ardent admirers.
CANCER
June 22nd - July 23rd Neither a lender nor a borrower be at the start of the month. The last thing you want is to mix friendship with finance. The New Moon on the 11th could find you mixing with a different group of people. The chance to advance your education could arrive during the middle of the month. This is a good time to take some advanced courses, even if it's via the Internet.
LEO
24th - August 23rd Your romantic or business partner won't give you much support for career plans in early May. It's important to pursue a golden opportunity regardless of what anyone thinks; you don't want to be consumed with regret. On the 11th, the New Moon could find you accepting a wonderful position involving real estate, luxury goods, or gourmet food.
VIRGO
August 24th - Sept 23rd Your health could be delicate at the start of May. Try not to weigh down your schedule with lots of extra work. When you get tired, take naps. Eat nutritious food. Take light exercise. Sensible habits can help you stay well. The New Moon on the 11th will open the door to an exceptional educational opportunity. On the 26th, a Lunar Eclipse could prompt you to suddenly relocate.
LIBRA
September 24th - Oct 23rd There may not be much money for leisurely pursuits in the opening days of May. Instead of being consumed by frustration, find inexpensive ways to have fun. Armchair traveling can be diverting. Watch movies and read books set in exotic locales. By the time the 11th arrives, the New Moon will deliver a financial windfall that allows you to indulge in creature comforts.
SCORPIO
October 24th - Nov 22nd Your family might not approve of your best friend or romantic partner at the beginning of May. Standing in defence of your loved one is critical to the health of your relationship. The New Moon on the 11th opens the door to an alliance that restores your zest for life. It's a great time to exchange vows, form a professional alliance, or collaborate on a creative project.
SAGITTARIUS
November 23rd - Dec 21st Arguments at work could break out during the first half of the month. Avoid contentious subjects like the plague. The last thing you want is to make your job more stressful than it already is. On the 11th, you could embark on a fitness regimen that helps relieve anxiety. Midmonth could bring a chance to relocate to a peaceful abode.
CAPRICORN
December 22nd - Jan 20th Money could be tight at the start of May. Selling your handmade wares could be a good source of additional income. You've always been gifted with your hands; use them to make furniture, clothing, jewellery, or food that's marketed to a specialised market. The New Moon on the 11th could find you falling head over heels in love with someone who satisfies your needs.
AQUARIUS
January 21st - Feb 19th You may not get much cooperation from family during the first half of May. Relatives think your ideas are too radical, but you're firmly convinced that it's time for a dramatic overhaul. The New Moon on the 11th could prompt you to move to a place surrounded by beautiful landscaping. Your moneymaking potential will grow exponentially by mid-month.
PISCES
Feb 20th - March 20th Beware of blurt r ing out secrets at the beginning of May. Practicing discretion is critical to maintaining friendships. Instead of socialising, you may prefer spending lots of time at home. Domestic pursuits like cooking, cleaning and gardening can be rewarding. A job involving writing or broadcasting could be awarded to you near the 11th, thanks to the communicative New Moon.

Use Locally Meets…
Dave Fargher Local photographer and creator of the ‘Newark on Trent Photographs’ Facebook page
Tell us a bit about your background and where you grew up I grew up in Newark. I’m lucky to have my family in the close area. I remember times as a child discovering the area in and around Newark. In more recent years, I have been a member of NOTFAST Running club, a great local running g club for those who may be interested, which has helped me discover even more local places. I’m a keen runner and I am part of the Newark Half Marathon committee. I also shot the photos at the event in 2019.
16
What schools did you attend and what is your favourite memory from your school years? I attended local schools; Oliver Quibell, Hawtonville, Magdalene and Magnus. I wasn’t hugely academic in my school years, I went with the flow, but the friends I made along the way are what sticks, some of whom I’m still friends with now. You are a professional photographer and were a finalist in the food category of the National Geographic Traveller (UK)’s photography competition in 2019. How did you get into photography? I wouldn’t consider myself a professional, I just love to take photos and if they get noticed along the way, then great. I’ve always loved taking photos; from being a child with an instant camera on holiday to when the first camera phones came out. Seeing how camera phones have developed over time is fantastic. I seldom take my SLR out now. The technology and ease of having a camera always in your pocket is amazing. Years ago, when smart phones were just taking off ff, f I was part of an online community, MoBLoG. That community of sharing photos, feedback and
knowledge, has shaped how I see photographic opportunities. What are your favourite subjects to photograph? I used to love taking photos of bands and capturing the passion and feeling in a moment. I then moved to wedding photography and more recently travel photography. I love e city scenes and photographing people in a candid way. Being able to capture som meone without them posing or ac cting is what I love. And if that scene is in a faraway city or place e, even better! Why did you start the Facebook group ‘Newark on Trent Photographs’? There was a niche for it. Facebook is s a fantastic tool to bring people e together and I noticed that a lot of my friends on Facebook were taking lovely photos of the e area but there was nowhere to share those pictures other than your immediate friends. Settting up the Facebook group has given people the opportunity to showcase their photos, sharre the beauty in our midst and co onnect with people who share th he passion. It also helps s people to discover places in the e local area they wouldn’t norrmally know of. We have some absolutely beautiful places on ou ur doorstep but if
you don’t know about them, they are hard to find. Having a community of people who share the love for the local area is a great way to discover those lesser trodden places. What is your favourite thing about living on Newark? We have a beautiful market town, fantastic local shops and amazing historical sights. I personally love walks along the river. I often take walks with my dog and try to get in as many sights as possible. If you are so inclined, there’s a great walk, starting at Sconce Park, walking down the river, through the castle and town and then up the cycle track to Balderton Lake and back. Remember to look around. Many people walk with their head down at their phone, if you look up once in a while, you’ll see what the town can offer.
Setting up the Facebook group has given people the opportunity to showcase their photos, share the beauty in our midst and connect with people who share the passion. Where is the most exotic place you have visited? I travel a lot with my wife (just not lately), and we visit many countries and cities. We favour the South of France or Italy. Last year, I ran the Marrakech Marathon, which was a fantastic event, albeit very hot. I have to say, the most exotic place is Bali in Indonesia. We stayed in Kedewatan, a place near Ubud, in the jungle with a view of Mount Agung, an active volcano. Waking up every morning, hearing exotic birds,
monkeys and seeing the volcano smoking in the distance was exceptional. If I had a choice, I would live in Bali. What is the first place you will visit in town when lockdown is over? The handy thing about lockdown is being able to exercise and see the local area. In all honesty, if it wasn’t for lockdown, I probably wouldn’t have started the ‘Newark On Trent Photograph’ page, so I suppose there’s one thing to be thankful for. I’m quite eager to visit the local shops again. I can’t imagine what it’s been like for the smaller independent stores so my first visit will be to those. I hope everyone else will take the time to also visit our local shops. There’s a lot to offer…like the beauty of the town, you just have to look!

For the largest range of tiles, it has to be Balderton Tile Centre As many of our customers know, this has been a truly challenging year, but despite the effects of the pandemic we have thrived. We would like to thank customers both old and new for their continued support and despite the limitations of Corona Virus, have still relied on us for their tiling work. We have recently taken on some new suppliers and we are excited to share some brand-new tile collections. These abstract designs and geometric prints will bring depth and a unique touch to your home, coming in a variation of colours, meaning that your tiles can be personalised to you. Not only this, but we have also introduced an external porcelain paving slab range which also has coordinating internal floors, allowing you a fluent transition from indoor to outdoor space. This distinctive and luxurious outdoor tile collection is
available now, so please feel free to visit our showroom at your convenience! As per government guidelines, appointments are no longer necessary, but social distance measures are still in practise. Our social media is ever expanding and is a great way to find out about new stock and to keep up to date with current tiling trends and ideas. Follow our Instagram @baldertontilecentre and our Facebook, Balderton Tile Centre for an insight into our tiling work and to see more amazing transformations, from bathrooms to kitchens to conservatories.

Garden View This month – Purple sprouting broccoli Purple Sprouting Broccoli is a beautiful, tasty addition to the dinner table, and the garden. It has a great flavour, a long harvesting season and is nutritionally beneficial. A single portion provides half your daily requirement of carotenoids, plus high levels of folic acid and vitamins A and C. It's definitely a 'plan-ahead' crop though. If you start planting now you will give yourself something to look forward to next January, and as it is a 'cut and come again' crop, that long season should keep you going until April or May! Purple-sprouting broccoli is extremely hardy, tolerating temperatures as low as -12°C. You can actually start raising seeds in March, for even earlier crops. I usually start the new year with good intentions of staggering my planting like this (because it is one of my favourites veg), then forget and end up planting in April or May. One of the reasons I love it is that I garden on fairly alkaline soil, in which it thrives. It prefers a heavier soil than mine ideally but seems to do well enough in my garden. I dig in a fair amount of leaf mould and well-rotted manure to bulk it up. Purple sprouting broccoli doesn't like exposed sites, because the wind buffets the stems, so if your garden is more open it will need a bit of protection. Sow seeds into small pots or multi-cell trays, using a good quality multi-purpose seed and cuttings compost. When the little plants are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out and transplant them into single 24
9cm pots. Watering them in well. Once the plants have matured, fork the soil over. Remove large stones and perennial weeds. Even if your soil is heavier it's worth digging in some organic matter to improve texture and moisture retention. I don't need to add lime to my soil but if you garden on neutral or acid soil, you'd be advised to work some in. Transplant when the broccoli plants are 7-9cm tall. Water them well before removing from their pots, and plant them 50-60cm apart, with a similar distance between the rows. Brassicas dislike loose soil, so make sure you firm around the plants lightly with your foot. Water again after
planting. Six plants will produce enough broccoli to feed a family of four. I grow more because I love it. Harvest when the flower shoots are well developed but before the flowers have actually opened. Cut the central spears with a sharp knife first, as this encourages the side shoots to develop quickly. Then crop the side shoots regularly to extend the cropping time. January seems a long way away right now, but a little planning and preparation will ensure that deliciousness will await when we get there. Happy gardening, By Rachael Leverton
