How to get online on holiday We make sense of mobile data and dongles. Going online is a necessity for many travellers. It enables us to get accurate weather predictions, WR FKHFN ¿LJKW VWDWXVHV DQG WR ¾QG out about local tourist attractions. So how do you get connected when you’re far from home? Many hotels, resorts and attractions promise free Wi-Fi, but in some cases the Wi-Fi is limited to a single device, DQG \RXµOO RIWHQ ¾QG that the service is too slow to stream TV programmes. In some cases the Wi-Fi will block VSHFL¾F VHUYHUV DQG ZHEVLWHV You can get around the single-device limit if you have a smartphone with a Personal Hotspot feature. This creates a Wi-Fi network that other devices can connect to, but all the data runs through the phone. It won’t change any blocks on streaming – if you’re determined, you can get around them using Virtual Private Networking software – or speed up very slow internet connections, but it does mean the kids can connect their Kindle Fires or other devices when the weather isn’t brilliant. Sometimes, the best way to go online is to use your phone’s data connection – 4G coverage in most big holiday destinations is very good. The main concern is the potential cost, with some tourists running up massive mobile phone bills during their holiday. But mobile data needn’t be expensive. It might even be free. Each major operator has a list of countries where you don’t need to worry about big data bills, so for example Vodafone offers free roaming across 48 different countries on Pay As You Go and 77 countries on contracts 6

that include Global Roaming Plus. Always check before you go: if your phone contract doesn’t include roaming you can usually buy a roaming add-on, such as a certain amount of data for a ¾[HG IHH ,WµV XVXDOO\ much cheaper to buy a data bundle than to incur charges when you’re abroad, and if you need more you can buy another one via your provider’s app or website. But check coverage – you can’t use your phone if your destination has no signal. If you want to connect laptops or other devices and your phone doesn’t have the virtual hotspot feature, another option is to invest in a data dongle. This can be a device that plugs into your laptop’s USB port to give it mobile data access, or it can be a dedicated device that creates a portable Wi-Fi hotspot. At the time of writing, Vodafone’s mobile Wi-Fi hotspot is £50 on Pay As You Go. That price includes 15GB of mobile data, which lasts for up to 90 days before expiring. If you’re using public Wi-Fi networks, be very careful: it’s really easy to set up a convincinglooking but fake Wi-Fi hotspot to intercept SHRSOHµV LQWHUQHW WUDI¾F ,I \RX QHHG WR GR VHFXUH things such as online banking, consider investing in an app such as Tunnelbear. It creates a secure, your-eyes-only tunnel between you and the site or service you’re using. WHO ARE THE CHRISTADELPHIANS? “Who are these Christadelphians?” we hear you say. Let us tell you. They are a community bound together by a common faith in the gospel preached by Jesus Christ and his apostles: and have borne the name “Christadelphian” since the mid-19th century. Their name encompasses in one word the phrase, “brethren in Christ”, a phrase used by the apostle Paul to describe 1st century Christians. [Cf. Colossians 1:20].

4th August Speaker Mr. S Cope Subject: Thoughts on Bible words

Their faith and teaching stem solely from the Holy Bible, which, as the word of Almighty God, they acknowledge as the sole authority on matters of belief and conduct. They do not believe that any of their members, past or present, have received any special revelation, but that it is the Bible alone that is able to bring men and women to a knowledge of the way of salvation through Jesus Christ. [CF. 2 Timothy 3:15].

11th August Speaker Mr. C Green Subject: Politics and the believer

There has been a Christadelphian community in Newark for over 168 years, and they now meet in their own hall in Cliff Nook Lane, off Appleton gate, NEWARK, NG24 1LY.

18th August Speaker Mr. G Cave Subject: Is there a God of love?

On Sunday evenings, commencing at 5.15pm, where the first century Christian gospel is preached, and Bible teaching on aspects of behaviour is examined. You are warmly invited to join us. In addition you may wish to log on to our international website: www.thisisyourbible.com.

mini ceramic styling iron, two sectioning clips and a bag for just £44.95. Travel hair-styling products tend to be a bit ‘meh’ when it comes to power, but this hairdryer is 1200w and the straighteners heat up to 190°C. Choose from dusky pink with a matching suede-effect case, or light blue or stone with a leather-look case, see www. alfaitaliapro.com.

Belle of the Beach Whether you’re planning a week in a luxury Caribbean villa or going camping in Cornwall, this little lot deserve a spot in your suitcase. I’m a big fan of dry shampoos, particularly for camping, festivals and lazy weekends. Philip Kingsley’s One More Day Dry Shampoo is a good choice. It absorbs excess sebum, boosts volume and helps to prevent an itchy, irritated scalp. It’s a spray rather than a powder, so won’t leave you looking like you’ve 16

been dusted with talc (unlike some other dry shampoos). The travel-sized 50ml bottle is perfect for holidays, although the 200ml is a lot better value for money. It’s £9-£19.50, see www.philipkingsley.co.uk. I’m very tempted by the new Como Viaggio Travel Styling Kits by Alfa Italia. Each kit comprises a travel hairdryer,

A facial oil can help to tackle dry patches, boost hydration and soften skin. Personally, I prefer a 100% natural oil like Gorgias London’s Age Renewal Facial Oil, which I’ve been using at nighttime for a few weeks now. It’s a 100% natural blend of seed and plant oils, including avocado, prickly pear, olive and argan. The blend is packed with nutrients, vitamins, fatty acids, omega 9 and antioxidants. My skin drinks it up and always feels softer and ‘happier’ the morning after using it. It costs £44.95 from www. gorgiaslondon.com.

I know I’m not the only one of my friendship group who slathers on face cream but rarely uses body lotion. If you’re also guilty of neglecting 80% of your skin, AL!VE’s Hydrating Spray Lotion could be the answer. It takes seconds to spray on and absorbs superfast. It also feels lovely and cool, so is perfect for freshening up on a hot day. Best of all, you can pick it up for just £5 from Sainsbury’s. If, like me, your legs are less smooth alabaster and more pale mottled mess, fake tan can be your friend. Had a bad experience with bright orange streaks?

Modern formulas are a huge improvement on their predecessors. Just exfoliate and moisturise well before you start. Bondi Sands’ Protect & Tan is a great introduction to self-tanning. As the name implies, it helps to protect your skin from the sun and builds a gradual, naturallooking tan over a few days of use. It’s SPF 15 so not strong enough for sunbathing but perfect if you’re popping to the shops. It’s an oil, but not greasy, and it leaves skin feeling softer for hours afterwards. It’s £12.99 at www.boots.com. By Kate Duggan

Use Locally - Issue 76 August 2019 Watching and naming your thoughts and feelings: “Mindfulness isn’t about making these thoughts go away, but rather about seeing them as mental events,â€? says Dr Williams. “Imagine standing at a bus station and seeing ‘thought buses’ coming and going without having to get on them and be taken away. This FDQ EH YHU\ KDUG DW žUVW EXW with gentle persistence it is possible.â€?

Why Doctors are prescribing Mindfulness Mindfulness has gone from buzzword to a therapy increasingly prescribed by doctors. So what’s it all about? Mindfulness is‌ • Increasing your awareness of what’s going on inside and outside yourself in a particular moment—both physical sensations and emotions. • Stopping to really notice what you’re thinking and feeling and what sparked these thoughts and emotions. How it can help Today, many of us rush through our days, reacting ‘off the cuff’ and missing opportunities to take a breath and appreciate what’s around us. Mindfulness means taking a step back to examine what’s going on rather than just reacting. “It’s about allowing ourselves to see the present moment clearly. When we do that, it can positively change the way we see ourselves and our lives,â€? says Professor Mark Williams, former director of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre, By becoming more aware of your thoughts and feelings, you can recognise signs of stress and anxiety earlier and begin

18

to see patterns, recognising those that aren’t helpful. This can make it easier to prevent them overwhelming you or leading you into a spiral of negative emotions or actions that make the situation worse.

Mindfulness is increasingly recommended by doctors for mental health :H FDQ DOO EHQHžW IURP PLQGIXOQHVV EXW LWÂľV QRZ RIžFLDOO\ recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to prevent depression in people who’ve had three or more bouts, and is increasingly recommended by doctors for helping with chronic conditions or pain, as well as stress, anxiety or depression. There’s emerging evidence that it can ease insomnia, too. Practising Mindfulness The NHS recommends: Noticing the everyday and trying something new: notice the details of what’s going on around you and try a different seat or going somewhere new for lunch to see things in a new way.

Identify them. “That’s my worry about my Dad’s health.â€? “I’m stressed because I’ve got a really busy week.â€? By being aware of your fears and concerns, you’re more likely to recognise when you’re letting them grow disproportionately to the thing they’re about. Freeing yourself from the past and future: realising that worries about the past or future can dominate, stopping you from enjoying the now. If you realise you’ve been reliving or pre-living negative experiences for several minutes, take a moment to focus yourself in the present, appreciating the day and the moment you’re living now. Taking time out: ideally having more formal, longer mindfulness sessions, focusing on your breathing and your body and bringing your attention back whenever your mind wanders. This could be at home or while travelling. Find the time and place most convenient and helpful for you. The NHS recommends the Mental Health Foundation’s online mindfulness course which can be found at www. bemindfulonline.com, or \RX FDQ žQG D ORFDO WHDFKHU bemindful.co.uk/learnmindfulness. A second New Moon on the 30th attracts a fantastic moneymaking opportunity. Being able to work overseas will be a welcome change of pace.

SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - Dec 21st The New Moon on the 1st urges you to venture off the beaten path. Being adventurous, enterprising, travelling overseas or enrolling in university are among the possibilities. A second New Moon will rise on the 30th, attracting an important career opportunity. Your career will require your attention on the 15th, due to an anxious Full Moon. It's possible your boss will quit unexpectedly, causing more responsibilities to be heaped onto your plate.

The opening days of August invite you to kick back and relax. That's because a restful New Moon rises on the 1st. Take this opportunity to go on vacation or retreat to a tranquil place where you can hear yourself think. By the time the second New Moon rises on the 30th, you'll be in top form. The opening days of August promise to be very busy, thanks to an active New Moon on the 1st. Take this opportunity to run errands, catch up on correspondence and reconnect with friends. The Full Moon on the 15th will bring a disappointing legal decision. Although you'll be angered by this verdict, it's important to pick yourself up and dust yourself off.

Joining a club, team or organisation is strongly advised at the beginning of August. That's when the New Moon will put you in contact with some creative people. On the 15th, an anxious Full Moon will prompt you to take a second look at a romantic relationship. Someone you once adored could reveal themselves as selfish.

A passionate romance will make the opening days of August a time to remember. If you're single, you will meet someone special at a sporting or entertainment venue. On the 15th, the Full Moon will force you to make an ethical decision. It may be necessary to leave a job where you are being pressured to do underhanded or even criminal things.

Over the moon? What a load of tosh! “He was yakking nineteen to the dozen, acting like he was the bee’s knees, but when I said he was talking a load of tosh he got the hump.” Foreign visitors overhearing this conversation in a British pub could be forgiven for thinking they’d landed in a parallel universe, but if you’re a native Brit, you’ll have understood it as: “He was talking very quickly, behaving as though he was somebody special, but when I criticised what he was saying he became angry.” Here in the UK we love our idioms: in fact, English is probably the most idiom-friendly language nation in the world. 7KH 2[IRUG 'LFWLRQDU\ GH¾QHV an idiom as “a group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual words.” Here are some great examples, together with their origins: A LOAD OF TOSH Now taken to mean “a lot of nonsense”, the expression originally indicated success for 26

London’s ‘toshers’: individuals who used to scour the city’s sewers searching for anything of value. ‘Tosh’ was actually the treasure the searchers found, but the word became a negative term to describe the unfortunate toshers themselves. BOB’S YOUR UNCLE Believed to date from the Victorian era, “Bob’s your uncle” refers to something that is easily and smoothly achieved. It is thought that the expression was a sarcastic response to the appointment of Arthur Balfour to a prominent position in government by his uncle, Robert Gascoyne-Cecil. ‘Bob’ was Prime Minister at the time. ALL GONE TO POT This saying could refer to leftover scraps being boiled up for tomorrow’s soup, but it’s more likely we owe it to the practice of iron smelting, where damaged tools or weapons would be melted down in a crucible. It must have been easy for the miners to make the imaginative leap between the rattling of the pumps at full steam and someone speaking rapidly. Alternatively, place collections of smaller plants together in rows or groups, allowing for contrasts in shapes, colour and texture. Don’t forget to pop trailing plants on a high shelf to create a ‘living wall’ effect. Coordinate pots or planters for a sense of overall cohesion. • Enhance your walls with botanical works of art. Traditional school-style posters are very on trend right now, as are anatomical botanical drawings, eighteenth century-style paintings (used as bold, whole-wall murals) and graphic modern prints.

Use Locally - Issue 76 August 2019 a psychiatrist may take a different view. If your partner is displaying symptoms such as low energy and general loss of pleasure in everyday life, it’s possible they are suffering from a condition called dysthymia. Also known as ‘Persistent Depressive Disorder’ and closely related to depression, this condition can last for years and, thanks to its undramatic symptoms, often goes undiagnosed.

My partner’s lost in the past Do you listen to Spotify while your partner still enjoys scratchy cassette recordings? Do you bristle each time he or she switches on the Yesterday channel, or counts out loose change instead of using a contactless card? Age affects people in different ways and if you’re a forwardlooking person who is willing to embrace change, it can be frustrating when your partner seems happier living in the past.

in, listening to the same music he played when he was young. He even moans when I suggest something different, like trying out a new recipe.”

Nostalgia can become a kind of safety blanket

At 56, Stephen Adebusi-Jones is two years younger than his wife Mary, but she feels his attitude to life is typical of someone much older.

That’s a familiar story for Jamie Barber, who has lived with his partner Mimi for the past twenty¾YH \HDUV ²0LPLµV LQWHUHVW LQ Sixties nostalgia began when she started buying and selling vintage clothes and jewellery online,” Stephen explains. “She used to enjoy trawling charity shops and online auction sites for vintage buys, but now she just watches reruns of V ¾OPV DQG 79 VKRZV RQ YouTube.”

“Steve always wanted to hear the latest band, experiment with different foods and travel to new places,” says Mary. ”But all that VWRSSHG DIWHU KH WXUQHG IRUW\ ¾YH These days he prefers to stay

It can be hard to understand how a partner who was once positive, optimistic and adventurous could lose those qualities as they age. While it’s easy to accuse them of being ‘stuck in a rut’,

If you can both laugh off your differences and set them aside, there’s no problem, but if your partner’s behaviour starts to affect your lifestyle as a couple, LW FRXOG EH D UHG ¿DJ IRU \RXU relationship.

A person with dysthymia might suffer from low self-esteem, show little interest in daily activities and seem irritable and ‘down’ much of the time. Avoiding social activities, not getting minor tasks done and losing concentration are also signs of this condition. The good news is that it can be relieved by a combination of talking therapy and medication. If you believe that your partner’s mental health is at risk, you should encourage them to contact a GP. $OWHUQDWLYHO\ \RX FRXOG ¾QG help from Age UK, which runs a free counselling service throughout the UK. Call Age UK’s helpline on 0800 678 1602 to locate a counsellor near you, or visit their website at ageuk.org.uk. Whoever came up with the wise old adage “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift; that’s why they call it the present!” seems to have understood the importance of looking forward, rather than living in the past. If you can communicate that message to your partner, there’s a chance it could transform both your lives for the better. By Kate McLelland

What’s it like to drive? 7KH &5 9 +\EULG žUPO\ VLWV on the comfort end of the spectrum, rather than the sporty. Supportive seats and a wellcomposed suspension setup result in a comfortable ride on long distances, while even the large 19-inch alloy wheels žWWHG WR RXU WHVW FDU GLGQÂľW seem to upset the ride too much.

UK Drive: Honda CR-V Hybrid What is it? Honda’s CR-V SUV has become one of the best-selling SUVs around the globe, as it’s reliable, practical and well-priced. The latest CR-V has also upped the ante when it comes to style, and has adopted a bolder, USinspired look. An increased wheelbase also results in a far more practical cabin, which has a more premium feel, and there is the option of a seven-seat version on the petrol-powered model. What’s new? Honda has done away with its diesel-powered cars, and instead chosen to offer the CR-V with a 1.5-litre petrol engine – and this, the Hybrid. Honda aims for two-thirds of its VDOHV E\ WR EH HOHFWULžHG LQ some way, and this CR-V Hybrid LV WKH RQO\ HOHFWULžHG QHZ +RQGD you can buy today, although the žUP KDV SURGXFHG HOHFWULžHG models in the past. The CR-V is, however, Honda’s žUVW HOHFWULžHG 689 DQG DLPV WR RIIHU D JRRG PL[ RI HIžFLHQF\ DQG performance. What’s under the bonnet? It has a 2.0-litre VTEC petrol 42

engine, which is paired to an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack to produce a total output of 181bhp and 315Nm of torque.

Honda has done away with its dieselpowered cars There’s a choice of front- or four-wheel-drive, with both featuring an e-CVT automatic transmission. However, the gearbox prohibits maximum power delivery when accelerating harshly, although it remains smooth. It can accelerate from 0-60mph in 9.0 seconds and offers a top speed of 112mph, but it never feels as quick as those žJXUHV VXJJHVW The claimed 53.3mpg fuel HFRQRP\ žJXUH DOVR IHHOV D touch ambitious. Around town, it will easily match and exceed that, but on motorways and at higher speeds for longer stints, fuel economy drops below 40mpg, which is disappointing for a model that claims to be so HIžFLHQW

,WÂľV DOVR UHžQHG DW VSHHG ZLWK a limited amount of road and wind noise. In the corners there’s some roll, but that’s a worthy payoff for a comfortable family SUV – providing buyers aren’t expecting thrills. How does it look? The latest CR-V has adopted an evolutionary look to its styling. The striking front nose and overuse of chrome undoubtedly helps make it look more American, but it’s hard to deny that it’s resulted in a bold-looking SUV. The new car is also wider and more muscular than past CR-Vs and it adopts a similar front end to the latest Civic as part of Honda’s ‘family face’. The CR-V’s angular front end makes it one of the most DHURG\QDPLFDOO\ HIžFLHQW FDUV in its class. $OO PRGHOV DOVR EHQHžW IURP D full suite of LED lights at the front and rear, which certainly help to give the CR-V plenty of presence. What’s it like inside? The CR-V’s interior quality is certainly a big improvement. There are plenty of softtouch materials, as well as a clean, clutter-free layout, and wood trim. The absence of a transmission tunnel also results in a hugely spacious centre console, while a traditional gearstick is replaced by buttons.

The seven-inch touchscreen is infuriating to use, and though loaded with features can be GLIžFXOW WR RSHUDWH As for practicality, the CR-V excels, even in slightly more impractical Hybrid guise. The standard 1.5-litre CR-V has the option of seven seats, but with the room taken up by the batteries, it’s not an option here. There’s 491 litres of load space to play with, while the rear seats offer plenty of legroom and headroom for adults. You also don’t have a transmission tunnel eating into legroom. What’s the spec like? Go with the entry-level ‘S’ VSHFLžFDWLRQ DQG \RX PLJKW feel rather short-changed, with satellite navigation and parking sensors both missing. However, our high-spec SR grade car came with leather upholstery, keyless start and entry, heated front seats and ambient

interior lighting all included. The Hybrid costs over £2,000 more compared to the standard petrol model, which is quite a chunk of money to absorb – particularly when the running costs aren’t exactly revolutionary. Prices start from £30,130 for the Hybrid, with our test car coming in at £34,470. This puts it in a similar ballpark to the Toyota RAV4 – the only direct hybrid rival to the CR-V.

As with Toyota, Honda should be admired for pushing ahead ZLWK LWV HOHFWULžFDWLRQ DLPV DQG abandoning diesel in its CR-V – especially as the SUV sector is still dominated by dieselpowered models.

Verdict The CR-V Hybrid’s punchy, UHOD[HG DQG UHžQHG SRZHUWUDLQ makes it the pick of Honda SUV’s line-up, and it’s ideal for town driving where the TXLHWQHVV DQG HIžFLHQF\ RI D hybrid come into their own.

But is it a few years too early? Perhaps. For long-distance HIžFLHQF\ GLHVHOV VWLOO PDNH the most sense, but for urban drivers wanting a stylish and practical SUV, the CR-V Hybrid could be ideal. James Baggott
