The Wolfit Endowment Fund (Registered Charity No: 1065634)

T

he Wolfit Endowment Fund was set up in 1997 to give grants of money or materials to local students of drama who are resident in or were educated in Newark or Balderton. So far this year three students have received financial support. Sir Donald Wolfit was born in 1902 in Balderton. His first public appearance was at The Robin Hood Theatre, Averham which he supported through houtt his long and distinguished career. In 1929 he appeared at the Old Vic as Claudius. In the 1930s he started his own theatre company. His first attempt at management was a drama festival in Newark in 1934. In 1937 he formed the Donald Wolfit Shakespeare Company following his success playing Hamlet at Stratford. During WWII he performed during the blackout to good reviews, receiving a CBE for his courageous effort. In 1944, following a successful performance as Lear, he was recognised as a great actor. His service to the theatre and to Shakespeare was rewarded in 1957 when he received a knighthood. Sir Donald Wolfit 6

died in February 1968 following a brief illness. Each year the Endowment Fund organises a Festival of

Drama, Music and Verse Speaking, a Lecture and various other fundraising events. The Festival gives performers of all ages an opportunity to act, sing or recite in front of a professional adjudicator and to receive guidance and encouragement. Timothy West, Alan Ayckbourn and Sian Phillips are just some of the many celebrities who have presented the Lecture. It has not been possible to hold a Festival or a Lecture since 2019 but we are going ahead with a Quiz Night on 12 October at Farndon Village Hall to start replenishing our funds.

Yes always been interested in cooking but truly developed a passion for it after arriving in the UK and really getting to try out the multi culture food scene available here. Desi Kitchen is almost a fusion based cuisine although we have opted to advertise as a classic Indian Cuisine and gourmet Burgers takeaway delivery service. Is Desi Kitchen a family run business? It is a family run business, my brothers and other family members and friends have truly gone out of thier way to help me succeed. Our spectrum of recipes have been passed down from four generations

I have been working as a Head chef at various other Indian food outlets in the local area prior to going solo and establishing my own establishment. Newark Rambler

COOMBES WOOD AND ROBIN HOOD WAY This walk starts on Parfitt Drive. Walk up the drive and take the footpath on the left. Turn right up Quaker Lane till Coombe Lane. Walk along Coombe Lane quite a distance. En route you will see a sign to the Halifax Bomber Memorial (worth a detour) and diagrams showing the access paths through Coombes Wood. Take the second footpath sign on the left across a field diagonally and climb the stile into the wood. Follow the path – a bit of a scramble and usually muddy – to another stile, up the field and onto a byway – Rob Lane. This is a lovely track lined with trees and bushes but, again, it can be muddy and probably best not tackled in midwinter. At the end of Rob Lane go left along Greaves Lane - a narrow country road so be careful until you reach Meadow Farm.

the views at the top, where there is a board explaining the Robin Hood way.

Goblin cave on Rob Lane

Just past this take the footpath on the right. Again, a bit of a scramble uphill but worth it for

The view that Robin saw 12 | Please mention Use Locally when responding to adverts

Turn left and walk down the road back to Greaves Lane then go right till the next footpath (jj (just before Appledown). Take the footpath to cross a stile into a field. It is a bit difficult to find the right of way line over this field but a path is usually visible. It is parallel to the righthand side about 15 metres in and ends at a finger post. Go right to the corner of the next field and onto a farm track with the farm on your left. Go through the gate at the bend leading onto a path alongside a field - the path is hedged on one side and is fenced off from the field. This path takes you by the playing fields on the left. At the end turn right a short distance then take the footpath back to Parfitt Drive.

Honestly – My Story by Sheridan Smith BAFTA and Olivier Awardwinning TV and West End star, top-10 recording artist and sell-out live performer, Sheridan Smith OBE is the latest to have been swayed by a publisher’s pre-Christmas autobiography paycheque. While these books are usually forgotten no sooner than they are read, Sheridan does at least bring real-life warmth and charisma to the pages of this 320-page tome that’s packed with showbiz adventure, funny and warm, but dark times and heartbreak too. From The Royle Family, Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps to Gavin and Stacey, The C Word, Cilla and Moorside, through to Little Shop of Horrors and Legally Blonde on-stage, there are a world of memories that we can all share and enjoy. Recipe Tip This plate has an intensely Spanish ‘small plates’ feel, but you can add green vegetables to it to create a more balanced dish, north European twist, should you wish.

Butternut Squash and Chorizo Introduction

As autumn draws in, the tastes and flavours that pattern our diets begin to change. We don’t necessarily require nor crave the lightness of the summer, with salads gradually giving way to meat and carb-influenced dishes. With that in mind, using the light, sugariness of a butternut squash, yet gently layering in meaty protein that can guide us towards the winter months, is a great way to embrace the season. What’s more, the versatility of the dish means it can be cooked for breakfast by leaving out the gnocchi, as a medium lunch, or combined with bread for an evening meal. Oh… and it tastes fantastic!

Method 1. Warm the oil on a medium heat and add the choppedup chorizo. Cook for around 5mins until it’s browned, and the oil begins to seep out, but turn down the heat when this happens so you retain moisture in the meat. Remove and keep to one side. 2. Now combine chopped butternut squash and onion, cooking over medium heat with an addition of oil, if needed. Stir

until golden brown and tender, for 10-15mins. 3. Add your gnocchi to a pan of boiling water and cook for four minutes. Then drain. 4. Stir in the chorizo with the butternut squash and onion, and season with salt, pepper and lime, then serve with the gnocchi.

34 | Please mention Use Locally when responding to adverts

Ingredients (serves four) 1 tsp of olive oil 300g chorizo 450g butternut squash 1 onion 500g gnocchi

Top Tips • This is a flavour-driven plate that intends to combine sweet with spicy. Don’t be afraid to experiment further, adding sourness (in the form of lime), tomato flavours (which will also add moisture), and generous proportions of salt and pepper too. Let your tastebuds run away with you! • Be careful not to overcook your chorizo. Remember, considering it’s a food that can be eaten cold, it really doesn’t need much cooking at all, so lean on the side of undercooking. If you fry it for too long, it will become tough and unpalatable.

Food Review by Leisa Pickles HHHHH

The Hare and Hounds Country Pub at Fulbeck, Lincolnshire Again, this month I ventured out of Newark with my family to discover a “new to us” venue and this time the in-laws came too.

A

quick jump over the border into Lincolnshire took us to the village of Fulbeck and the popular The Hare and Hounds Country Pub. The pub has grown in capacity over the past 12 months and now has three areas for customers to dine in: inside, inside/outside (a covered area with heaters) and out/outside. We opted for inside/outside which was comfortable, warm and very spacious. The menu is both extensive and varied and boasts the traditional pub classics such as beer battered haddock & chips as well as some more modern dishes such as Vegetable and Mango Katsu Curry. As a party of six we all had something different which is a

demonstration of the variety on offer. I had the Gelston Lamb Burger with

Tzatziki, chunky chips and salad. The lamb was succulent and perfectly seasoned, and the dish was very well presented. My father in law had the gammon which he described as “spot on”, my mother in law opted for the smaller fish which was just the right size for her and judging by the amount left on his plate, the half rack of sticky BBQ ribs polished off by my son was pretty good too! Our meal was finished off perfectly with a Belgian Chocolate Brownie with Pistachio Ice Cream and 4 spoons! There is a variety of locally sourced products, my lamb being an example on the menu and some items such as Hare & Hounds Fruit Chutney that are made in house.

If you would like to know more about Independent Food & Drink Businesses that operate in and around Newark, come and join me over in my Facebook Group: tomyfrontdooruk/newark

Greenfingers…

The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration; and this month, as autumn works its way into our outdoor spaces, Alan Titchmarsh explains why variety is the spice of life, even in the garden!

has arrived. It’s so omething in the air - a kind of sourness, a tang that lingers. You can smell things just beginning to decay, but it’s in a way that is re eplenishing, stimulating and in nvigorating because it means things are turning and new possibilities are around the corner.

With the approach of autumn, at the moment we’re going through that phase where the colours and the shapes are changing. There’s sometimes a sadness when you realise summer is coming to an end, and the leaves certainly seem to be falling earlier this year. My advice though is to embrace the new season and really go after all the potential and possibilities that it holds. After all, we’re actually very lucky in Britain – where plants are concerned we can afford ourselves a different favourite every month; snowdrops in January, daffodils in February, tulips in March and so on.

So as autumn arriives I would offer the following bits of advice. Firstly, hold on to the last bitss of colour and savo our them. Next, enjoy y what’s there - perrhaps you have some raspberries or any number of the late-flowering varieties such as Cyclamen ns, Begonias, and of course, Crocuses.

People tend to associate autumn with brown and orange tones, and a rustling underfoot; but it’s about much more than that. One of the most exciting times is when you wake up on a certain day and you can just smell the fact the season

Also see how your garden is evolving – sure, th hat asparagus bed is no longer cropping, but look at the lovely ferns it’s now growing. Next, perhaps sta art autumn with a tidy-up of borde ers, or a clean out of the greenh house, or perhaps even renew a few w tools. Also consider getting your compost boosted with all those leaves suddenly in abun ndance. And finally, invest in so ome evergreens to offer texture an nd volume in areas of the garde en that might start looking a litt ttle sparser. tt Mostly though, lo ook forward to the coming chang ge and admire nature’s versatility y. There is tremendous colou ur still around us, and where the e leaves have

descended, look at the skeletal, artistic majesty of trees. Remember, anticipation is an underrated commodity. People expect everything instantly now because they are able to go into a supermarket and have what they want when they want it. Yet there is more to it than that where our gardens are concerned - I like looking forward in life and I thrive on anticipation because, of course, when it does happen, it’s that much more enjoyable.
