A cold: â&#x20AC;˘ Symptoms come on gradually â&#x20AC;˘ You feel worse on days 1 - 2, and usually better in a week â&#x20AC;˘ It doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t often cause a temperature or itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s brief and mild (not above 38Â°C) â&#x20AC;˘ Your nose tends to be painful, irritated and red â&#x20AC;˘ You will feel unwell, but not overwhelmingly tired â&#x20AC;˘ Sometimes you may also suffer from eye irritation, ear pressure or earache, mild headache and mild muscle pain.

7KH Ă X â&#x20AC;˘ Symptoms come on very rapidly â&#x20AC;˘ You usually feel worse after 2 or 3 days in, but improve after 5 or 6 days â&#x20AC;˘ You may have a temperature of 38Â°C or above, which comes on suddenly and can make you sweat, or give you â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;the chillsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;˘ Your cough tends to be dry and chesty â&#x20AC;˘ Headaches are very common; muscles and joints may ache badly â&#x20AC;˘ You may develop diarrhoea Â&#x2021; <RX PD\ KDYH GLIĂ&#x20AC;FXOW\ sleeping, although you feel very tired. Both are highly contagious infections caused by viruses and there are only two ways to combat them, avoiding contact and boosting your immune

system.

Avoiding Contact Think how many surfaces you touch; door handles, stair rails, taps, keypads when we enter our PIN. Now consider how many people have touched them before you. â&#x20AC;˘ Clean high-contact surfaces regularly and thoroughly â&#x20AC;˘ Clean your hands regularly and thoroughly, especially after touching your nose or mouth â&#x20AC;˘ Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t share cutlery or cups Â&#x2021; &ROG DQG Ă X VXIIHUHUV QHHG their own hand towel or disposable paper towels â&#x20AC;˘ Use tissues; throwing them away immediately prevents virus-laden droplets escaping into the air.

Zinc: Zinc appears to lessen symptoms and speed up recovery, if taken from the start. no proof garlic helps. Leave for 20 minutes after peeling and chopping to activate its immune boosting enzymes. Echinacea: A variety of preparations have been trialled with differing results. Some trials show that Echinacea takers are 30% less likely to develop a cold but thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s little evidence it helps once youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re ill. *OXWDWKLRQH DQG ELRĂ DYRQRLG These help to maintain a healthy immune system, although WKHUHÂˇV QR FROG RU Ă X Ă&#x20AC;JKWLQJ evidence yet. HELPING OLDER PEOPLE TO STAY SAFE AND WELL THIS WINTER With the colder winter weather now approaching fast, here at Lancaster Grange care home we are aiming to take the worry out of winter for many and to offer support and company to our local community throughout the coming months. With regular coffee mornings on every first Thursday of the month (all welcome from 10.00 - 12.00am!) and a range of tasty FREE Winter Recipe Cards currently available to all visitors to the home, we also have hints and tips to offer on keeping warm and well this winter. This can be a beautiful time of year but it can also be hazardous and cold for older people. Here are some simple tips.... have at least one hot meal a day to keep your energy levels up; make sure you drink regularly; keep warm and wrap up even when inside; make sure your heating is working; have food in the cupboard that will keep in case the bad weather makes shopping difficult; make sure your flu jab is up to date; take care moving around, especially outside; be extra vigilant on dark nights; keep in touch with neighbours, friends and family. The consequences of poor nutrition are well known but are especially important for those people living with Dementia. With Daycare and short respite breaks also available at Lancaster Grange 8

we are able to offer a worryfree alternative with no fuel bills to worry about or food shopping to do, whilst knowing that qualified care staff are always on hand. Situated on the edge of Fernwood we offer a warm welcome in a homely and

Deadlines - are they good or bad? We all know the self-assessment deadline of 31st January 2013 is looming, however is this good news for you or bad news? BY having the deadline after Christmas many people may have a tendency to leave off submitting their tax returns until the last minute. Couples should think carefully about what will happen to the pet rather than ignoring the issue to the last minute.
