SPOTLIGHT ON
NEWARK HOSPITAL The jewel in our crown When I joined Sherwood Forest Hospitals as Chief Executive last year I described Newark Hospital as the jewel in our crown – and I would say the same today. Newark Hospital has always been an important part of the local community and is well loved by those who work there as well as those who live nearby. We value our strong reputation for providing high quality local care, and remain committed to investing in improving and expanding the services we offer to the local population. The hospital provides a comprehensive range of treatments - including an extensive range of consultant-led outpatient services, planned inpatient treatments, daycase procedures, diagnostic and therapy services as well as a Minor Injuries Unit/Urgent Care Centre. Our wards care for patients with a range of medical conditions and the pre-operative assessment and endoscopy centres boast state-of-the-art facilities. The new Bramley Children's Unit opened its doors to patients last

By Paul O’Connor, Chief Executive of Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust October. Clinics, which used to be run in the main outpatients department, are now provided in a purpose built unit with new clinic rooms, together with a large bright waiting area where children can play. Feedback from patients and families has been excellent - with the new unit giving them their own space and providing treatment much closer to home. This latest development to children’s services at Newark Hospital follows the expansion of a paediatric presence from three days to five days a week, and the provision of diabetes clinics for local children who previously needed to travel to King’s Mill Hospital.
One of our latest developments that we are very proud of is our new rehabilitation service, the Fernwood Community Unit, which has proved a major success since opening in February 2013. The 12-bedded facility delivers a rehabilitative care service closer to home, which is beneficial for patients and their families and carers. It is meeting the needs of the growing number of elderly patients who require a short period of rehabilitation before they are ready to return home after receiving hospital treatment. It also helps those people who require rehabilitation after having problems at home or a medical problem which does not require admission to hospital. Thanks to the Newark Hospital League of Friends the hospital is now able to offer colonography, which is a procedure used to diagnose colon and bowel cancer, through state of the art

Use Locally - Issue 11 April 2014 Did you know...all of these services are available at your local hospital in Newark? Yes, that’s right; all of these services are available at Newark. For some of the more specialist parts of your treatment, such as a complex operation, you may need to go to King’s Mill Hospital but you are welcome to come back to Newark Hospital for your recuperation and follow up appointments.
medical imaging equipment. Colonography is the preferred choice for investigating abnormalities of the large bowel in patients who are unable to have colonoscopy. It provides clearer and more detailed images, and can detect abnormalities outside of the colon. It is particularly useful for elderly patients, especially those who are frail and ill. Newark’s Cardiorespiratory Unit also has a fresh new look, after being refurbished last September, and is now located in the Eastwood Centre. While I am pleased with the environment and services on offer at Newark Hospital - ultimately a hospital is about the people who work there. I am constantly receiving letters and emails from patients and the public about their experiences of care and compassion from our dedicated staff. We have many things to be proud of at Newark Hospital – but our XXXX staff are the reason that Newark Hospital continues to be the jewel in our crown. A programme called Better Together has recently been created by the Mid-Nottinghamshire Integrated Care Transformation Programme,
which includes many of the area’s health and social care providers. It is to tackle the challenge of increasingly stretched budgets, and the area’s increasing and ageing population. The estimated funding gap could reach £140 million within the next ten years if action is not taken now. There is a need to work alongside each other, delivering integrated services with the best interests of the patients at heart – providing care which is more suited to a patient’s condition or illness and is better value for money. Health and Social Care leaders in Mid Nottinghamshire have been asking local people to share their experiences of health and social care services in the area. Events have taken place to gather feedback from the public on what they think works well and what doesn’t, and to discuss how services could be delivered in the future. This feedback will form the basis of new developments for services across health and social care in Newark and Sherwood, and Mansfield and Ashfield. The Better Together team is now looking for people to become “Champions” for the programme and anyone can sign up who wants to be involved with the programme in some way.
More information about Champions and the Better Together programme can be found at www.bettertogethermidnotts.org.uk. 10

Life Begins The Call To Collect by Kate McLelland
Nowadays keeping up a hobby can be expensive. No matter how enjoyable the activity may be, the costs can quickly mount up if you have to pay subscription IHHV EX\ VSHFLDO RXWÀWV RU equipment and travel to and from a particular meeting place. There’s no return on that expenditure, so maybe it’s time to consider taking up a hobby that does offer a chance of earning your money back. Collecting rare and interesting objects is a great way to spend your leisure time and, with any luck, you may even make a SURÀW ZKHQ \RX ÀQDOO\ VHOO your collection on. So what should you collect? If you’re short of ideas right now, don’t panic. Just read on and see what appeals to you. Philately – or stamp collecting – is going through a bit of a crisis at the moment, with only the rarest items attracting the interest of serious buyers. However with fewer and fewer stamps actually in use these days, there may come a time when the pleasure of collecting stamps is matched by the ÀQDQFLDO UHZDUG LW EULQJV Fifty years ago children used to be keen collectors, but nowadays with the distractions of video gaming and the internet, young collectors are a rarity. That doesn’t, however, mean that numbers are declining: the Royal Philatelic Society of London claims that its membership has increased recently and there are a number of thriving stamp collecting clubs throughout the UK. Thimbles are commonly collected items as they can be easily kept and displayed. The earliest known thimble dates from the Han Dynasty (206BC - 202AD) in China.
In the UK, thimbles made from cast brass were in widespread use by the 14th century. Not all thimbles are suitable for sewing. Some, made of early Meissen porcelain or even gold, were given as keepsakes and in the 19th century thimbles were even used to measure spirits. who are usually happy to share information and expertise. It is rather overwhelming to choose from the enormous range of coins available so beginners would be well advised to specialise in a single country or historical period. Thematic collections are also popular – such as coins depicting female monarchs only, or coins that come exclusively from Commonwealth countries. Wine collecting can be an expensive business, but the rewards are considerable if you invest wisely. A selection from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s wine collection recently sold for £3.5 million at auction, well over the auctioneer’s £2.6m million estimate. The

Auto Enrolment for Work Place Pensions Most employers by now will know that there is this new pension system being introduced over the next few years. Most employers with small numbers of employees will not have to start until 2017 but after attending a course about it the one thing that will be absolutely vital is preparation, preparation and preparation. Below I have listed a short list of the order that I would recommend that you approach this. It will be a time consuming job and could cause quite a lot of worry, it puts a lot of extra work on the employer initially, but once it is running it should not be too bad if you have done your preparation so will cut stress levels to a minimum. 1. Know your staging date – when you need to act 2. Assess your workforce 3. Review your pension arrangements 4. Communicate the changes to all your workers 5. Automatically enrol your ‘eligible jobholders’ 6. Register with The Pensions Regulator and maintain records 7. Contribute to your workers’ pensions There are reams of information I could give you but don’t have the space but if you follow my advice you will make the job a whole lot easier for yourself. Take a look on the Pensions Regulator web site for more information which you will find very useful.

Things to know if you are injured in a motor accident when it is not your fault.
HAVE YOU HAD AN ACCIDENT? CALL US ON 0800 5978181 If you have been injured in an accident that was not your fault within the last three years, our personal injury solicitors could help you claim compensation. Specialist advice is essential to recover damages due and resolve personal injury claims in a manner that minimises distress. It may also save you considerable expense if your claim is not fully sound or contains insufficient evidence. Give us a call today to see how we can help you
When you call your insurer to report the accident, you will be put under pressure to go to their appointed solicitors firm. You do not have to use any solicitors appointed by your insurers. You have a right to choose someone local, who will give a face to face service. Make it clear you have your own solicitor. Do not call a claims company. They are usually not solicitors. 'No Win No Fee', is good for you. Nearly all local solicitors will have a 'Win Fee policy'. Typically this is 25% of your compensation. They have an interest in winning your claim. Our experience is that we recover more than insurer appointed firms.

Register Without Delay to Improve Your Hockey Play! DEMAND for hugely successful Hockey Skills Camps at Worksop College has meant another date has been added to the Camp calendar.
O
“We look forward to welcoming boys and girls of all standards to The College.”
pen to children of all abilities who are aged between 7 and 16, Worksop College is holding a Hockey Skills Camp this Easter on Wednesday 16th April. The Camps have proved to be very popular with more than 60 children from across the Worksop, Southwell, Newark, Retford, Doncaster, Sheffield and Lincoln area attending the Christmas sessions. All children receive professional coaching from the Camp Coaches – a team which includes Worksop College staff, professional hockey coaches as well as first team players from the Worksop College Boys’ and Girls’ teams. Many of the Camp Coaches play for their counties and country. Under the guidance of Trevor Franse, Head of Boys’ Hockey and professional coach Keith Taylor, the camps will be held on the first class, flood-lit Astro pitches at The College. Trevor said: “We were really pleased to see so many young players wanting to improve their hockey skills over the Christmas period and it is great that there is the demand to do the same this Easter. All players will be coached by highly experienced players who have also played the game from a young age. The camp will take place on Wednesday 16th April from 10 am to 4.00 pm with early drop off at 9.30 am available if necessary. The cost will be £15 per day or £20 for two children from one family.

Hope House School Our resident donkeys, Kenny and Chloe
Hope House School is a small independent Special School for children with autism spectrum disorders and is situated just outside Balderton. Last summer we opened our new Animal Unit to provide therapies and animal care courses for our students, and other children from the local community. It is well known that animals offer non-judgemental, unconditional love to their carers and this can be especially important for children with ASD or learning difficulties. Some of our students have quite complex needs and working with animals can enhance the children’s lives on a therapeutic level and provide learning opportunities that cannot be readily accessed in the classroom environment. Animal care also offers many opportunities for physical therapy. Carrying feed bags and water buckets, pushing wheelbarrows and using a yard brush or spade all provide autistic children with sensory feedback about where 24
their bodies are in space. They can also learn the benefit of team work through fun tasks like moving a bale of straw. Our resident donkeys are currently being trained to carry riders so that we can provide riding therapy for our younger children and carriage driving for our older students. We also do Reading to Dogs with our resident Labrador, Honey, to encourage reluctant readers to engage in books.
We are currently raising money to enable us to buy the equipment we need for the riding therapy. We have started an Adopt-a-Donkey scheme which has proved very popular, and we have recently been able to buy two specially adapted saddles. We also provide holiday homes for small pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs, birds etc, and we host children’s animal-themed birthday parties. If you would like further information, or if you would like to become a volunteer animal care assistant, please ring Kate Hewitt on 07712 330928 or Email Kate.hopehouse@gmail.com

Happy Birthday to Newark Paint & Hardware, 2 years old this month! Newark Paint & Hardwares strength lies in the fact that its owner, Newarkite, Jon Whiles, has a wealth of knowledge and is happy to share it with both professionals and domestic customers, in a way that is empowering and practical at the same time. I’ve heard him explain to a customer that its too early to be painting outside doors yet, and to professionals the merits of one brand over another. This is one of the reasons that Newark Paint is not only surviving in these difficult times but actually flourishing. When its more important than ever, that I buy the right product and save costly mistakes, I want to know that the person advising me actually knows and understands my needs, and not 26
from a text book or manual. The personal friendly service at the shop is second to none and you can often find a professional decorator there who is happy to talk through the problems you may have on an informal basis as well. But don’t think you will only find paint there – although the range of paints on offer is vast, including hand mixed paints to perfect the exact shade you are
looking for and all the accompanying tools of the trade, - there’s all manner of other things available in the mini superstore, from wheelbarrows to overalls, snow shovels to sledges (according to season!). Fire side accessories and log baskets. Gardening sundries are available here too, from watering cans to a small ball of twine, - again you don’t have to waste money on an item that you don’t need. There’s even a comfy sofa to have a coffee and examine the wallpaper books for the perfect décor. Jon has worked on both sides of the counter, during his career, starting off in a DIY store and then moving into repping for a brand leading paint applicator manufacturer, before ultimately

Use Locally - Issue 11 April 2014 realizing his dream of bringing the best products, and service at prices that are often better than the internet, to Newark. This means he has seen which paints really do their job and which products sit on the shelves, and what products are really needed when starting a job. The thing that struck me when I went to buy some paint, was the simple question of how big is the room? This enabled me to be directed to buying the right amount of paint and not have the almost obligatory half can left over at the end! (How many opened cans of paint are sitting in your garage or shed right now?). That represents a saving straight away. Then the old fashioned service of delivering the cans to the car or even free delivery to your home (or place of paint) is a very nice touch. So not only can we buy with less wastage and with the confidence that we have the right product, we don’t have to
carry the heavy cans either. So different to wandering around a store aimlessly trying to guess what product to buy! Jon Whiles has also been actively involved in promoting the Totally Locally campaign for Newark, assisting with spreading the message of buying local to help the local economy. As the store is an Independent in the town it is really important that we support local business as much as possible. The Totally Locally campaign is promoting the fact that if we all spend just £5 a week in Newark’s independent shops, together we will put another million pounds every year into our own area, making
us all more prosperous. Another good reason (if you need one) to visit Newark Paint & Hardware. To open a store in the toughest of economic times, was a big risk, you would think, however one that was minimized by Jons knowledge of his products and his high standards of customer service, and its this above all else that makes this store stand out from the crowd. I will leave the last word to his customers, “Good stuff, great knowledge and super customer skills, a pleasure to shop!” Tony “Personal touch with great knowledge, recommended.” Ana So if you are looking for great service, advice, and the right product, make sure you visit Newark Paint & Hardware. Happy Second Birthday Newark Paint & Hardware! With service like this you will be here forever!

Beer of the Month Spring is here, spring is here, Life is skittles and life is beer. So sang the great Tom Lehrer. Let’s prove him right. First, a little mise-en-scène. Doing the weekly shop, I often see bewildered gogglers in the beer aisle, clearly wondering what on earth all this stuff is. Thanks to a misspent middle age, I know. Allow me to share. I promise not to patronise. Anyway, it’s April. A chancy month – could be hot, could be cold. So to be safe I’ve chosen two beers, one for each eventuality. Both, by pure coincidence, from Marston’s; but I promise, they’re not paying me. The nice-weather beer is one of the bestknown and possibly best-selling best bitters in

The Better Life His and Herbs
by Derek Thompson
And, like so many herbs, the bees absolutely love it ZKHQ LW¡V LQ Ă RZHU 2XU FDW is a fan as well, if that’s any recommendation.
From time to time, a chat about plants or local history will develop into a neighbourly cuppa. Over the years, I’ve grown accustomed to that bewildered look when I reply, “Peppermint tea for me, please.â€? Especially when I follow it up by producing - magician style - a little bag of dried leaves. I used to buy it in bulk, but it’s so easy to grow that there’s really no need for most of the year. I’ve become a bit of a devotee, preferring a 50 / 50 blend of peppermint and Moroccan mint, and have been known to wax lyrical about the history, EHQHĂ€WV DQG XVHV RI PHQWKD piperita and its horticultural cousins. It’s the point at which Anne will often look at her watch and drink up. Another easy herb to grow - because it too has all the enthusiasm of a weed on overtime - is marjoram. An old wooden vegetable box, lined DQG Ă€OOHG ZLWK VRLO PDNHV a great portable container. 32
I favour other perennials - chives, tarragon, thyme and sage (although I’ve never found a regular use for it), because they seem to grow without the need for encouragement. Hand on heart, I haven’t much of a clue when it comes to herbs and cooking. To my jaded sinuses, everything pretty much goes with anything - which might explain why I prefer the garden to the kitchen. Curly leafed parsley seems to do well in pots, so long as it’s not over-watered; likewise for lavender (very nice in shortbread, but make sure it doesn’t become too woody by trimming it back at the end of the year) and rosemary, which is great for roast potatoes (see, I can be taught). We did try growing coriander a few times, but it never really worked out, so we transferred our allegiance to Vietnamese coriander. The plant needs a ORW RI ZDWHU DQG , ÀQG LW KDV DQ absolutely gorgeous aroma with a hint of lime. The other herb that, frankly, has let us down many times is basil. It doesn’t seem to matter what we do, whether it’s more watering or less watering, indoors or outdoors, feeding the soil or leaving it undisturbed. The basil always seems to check out early. However, the fact that it’s
another ‘plant of interest’ to the cat may be a factor. Most herbs have also been traditional remedies. In my quest to elevate peppermint beyond the humble humbug, I’ve learned it is caffeine free, has a calming effect on the stomach and digestion, and can be used for soothing headaches. I also read - in the library, no less - that steam from peppermint tea is good for the sinuses, which is not to be sniffed at. (Not until you’ve inhaled the minty steam, anyway.) There’s more: peppermint has antiseptic properties and is a remedy for travel sickness (when you don’t have ginger to hand). It’s also great for cooling skin irritations or LQĂ DPPDWLRQV 'R WU\ LW RQ D VPDOO DUHD RI VNLQ Ă€UVW WR check there’s no adverse reaction. I draw the line at chamomile tea, though. Is it just me or does it taste like straw?

A day at Ancaster Karting This weekend we visited Ancaster Karting - a quick 25 – 30 minute drive from Newark for an action packed day, enjoying the outdoors, and the spring sunshine. Its easy to find and well signposted and you cant miss it because there’s a massive Chieftain Tank on the field right beside it! You might wonder why travel 30 minutes when there are 2 kart tracks within 5 minutes of the centre of Newark? The reason is that Ancaster Karting offer a full day out and tailor make the day to your requirements. Karting is great, but we wanted karting & more! On top of that is the professionalism of the staff and the seriousness of the health and safety. I want to feel safe and secure when we indulge in our risk taking! And it’s a lovely place to go, with nice surroundings and sweeping panoramic views for the spectators. Immediately, the professionalism of the organisation is apparent, with the easy registration and friendly and polite staff. Safety is paramount and the Health & Safety briefing is very thorough, especially important when we had a non-driver in our party!
Off to the Karting area for our orientation and to get suited up, the training was a good mixture of easy to follow instructions, and a good video on the Marshalls flags system to instruct the drivers while out on the track. Ample supplies of safety gear, racing overalls, helmets and gloves, with a good range of sizes and spares. The Marshalls were very quick to respond to track problems, our youngest son spun out on the track, followed the instructions to raise his hand and the Marshalls were there within seconds. Our package was split into 2 x 15 minute sessions, laps are timed, and your times given out as you come in after each session. Receiving your times brings out the competitiveness and the resolve to beat your teammates next time!
After the adrenaline rush of Karting, it was off to play laser tag – this is possibly more suited to a younger audience and the children that were there were having a ball and really enjoyed it. Older visitors may probably prefer to do the paint ball. There are 8 different zones to play in and a wide variety of different scenarios. Each game lasted about 10- 15 minutes and there were 5 games with a break in the middle to get your breath back. It’s been described as a cross between Halo and Call of Duty! Drinks and snacks are available at the laser tag area, and there’s a restaurant in the main building, for more substantial meals or spectators to while away some time. If you still want more - there are other challenges available such as Quad Biking and bowling and of course the paint ball. Next time we plan to try the Quad Biking and the Paint ball and just leave time for a little karting! A great day out for all the family, young and old, any day of the year. Remember to book, as it gets very busy on peak days and weekends. Tel 01400 230306 and mention Use Locally Magazine.

Bank Holidays I don’t know – you wait for weeks and weeks for a day off work and then four come along all at once. And I blame the Pope. By Ted Bruning
Pope Francis seems happy about the forthcoming bank holidays.
He is, after all, the man who decides the date of Easter. This year it’s on 20 April – which is almost as late as it can be and means that we have four Bank Holidays (Good Friday, Easter Monday, the Spring Bank Holiday – except in Scotland – and the May Bank Holiday) within the space of six weeks. So if you like your precious days off well spread out, you might ask the Pope: why is Easter so late this year? And he’ll tell you the following: “The date is calculated thuswise. The ancient Jewish feast of Pesach or Passover, for reasons best known to ancient Jewish people, falls on the full moon on or immediately after the vernal equinox. The Last Supper was held on Passover, or so it says in the New Testament; the &UXFLĂ€[LRQ WRRN SODFH RQ WKH following Friday; so ipso facto the Resurrection – which is why we have Easter – was on WKH Ă€UVW 6XQGD\ DIWHU WKH IXOO moon that followed the vernal equinox. Which this year happens to be on 20 April. Geddit?â€? Got it. But the dates of public holidays have always been 40
contentious, with various people having various reasons for wanting them shifted. Some don’t want them at all: patriots to the bone they may be, but many industrialists really didn’t like the Government awarding us extra hols for the Royal Wedding in 2011 and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012. “Two days’ lost production!â€? they wailed. “That’ll cost us a bomb!â€? On the other hand the retailers of beer and bunting were over the moon. Bank Holidays, you’d think, ZRXOG EH IDLUO\ Ă€UPO\ Ă€[HG 1RW a bit of it. Until 1834 the Bank of England used to observe all 33 Roman Catholic Holy Days of Obligation. “This is daft!â€? said the directors eventually, and cut it to four – Good Friday, May Day, All Saints (1 November), and Christmas Day. But come on, that wasn’t enough. So in 1871 the Bank Holidays Act added Easter Monday, Whit Monday (the seventh Monday after Easter), WKH Ă€UVW 0RQGD\ LQ $XJXVW (instead of All Saints), and Boxing Day. And for nearly a century that seemed to suit. We all went on charabanc excursions to the seaside or (if posh) had long
weekends in the country or just stayed home and sorted the garden, and until 1965 we were very happy. That year, the August Bank Holiday was moved to the end of the month. In 1971 Whit Monday, the last moveable feast apart IURP (DVWHU ZDV Ă€[HG DV WKH last Monday in May. In 1975 Harold Wilson made New Year’s Day a Bank Holiday in England and Wales (it already was one in Scotland); and in 1978 Jim Callaghan, dyed in the wool leftie that he was (!) made May Day – which had been left out of the 1871 Act ² RIĂ€FLDO Now the tinkerers are out in force again. Some want national Saints’ days – St David’s Day and St Piran’s Day (is Cornwall a nation? You decide) in March, St George’s Day in April, St Andrew’s Day in November – to be made RIĂ€FLDO KROLGD\V 7KHUH¡V DOVR a move to scrap one or other of the May Bank Holidays and move it to October to mark Trafalgar Day. Someone even proposed a Margaret Thatcher Day‌ I’ll say no more!

Danube Restaurant Local traceable food, wherever possible is one of the trademarks of Danube Restaurant on Castlegate. While you enjoy delicious food, you can admire the majestic Newark Castle and its grounds. Ingredients are very important to Ramona, who owns the restaurant and she makes sure that she uses as much local produce of the best quality that she can. Everything is freshly cooked to her own and her mother's recipes to provide us with dishes from across the Danube region, with the occasional twist on a traditional taste. The personal service is another high point; menus can be adapted to individual needs and dietary requirements. Families are welcome and customers are greeted as friends. Indeed friends helped Ramona establish the restaurant two years ago, when she and her mother began cooking in the kitchen and friends and family helped with cleaning, served the food and did the washing up. The ethos of the dining experience here, comes from the wealth of experience Ramona had from the other side of the table – how many times she dined in restaurants all over the world and was disappointed either with the service or the food. Not so here! The service is friendly, helpful, unobtrusive, and with a smile. Nothing is too much trouble! It’s almost a holiday feeling as you can sit and while away some time eating, drinking and sharing delicious food. You are even welcome to relax just having a drink or coffee and cake! There is a traditional Orthodox menu being served on Easter Sunday, with painted Easter Eggs in the Eastern European tradition and a glass of Plum Brandy to accompany it. The main part of the menu is Lamb based, using lamb provided by one of the county's top lamb and beef suppliers. Sounds delicious! Space is limited so be sure to book. If Easter isn’t a good time to visit, then make time to go another day as Danube is a special experience all of its own. 42

Lancaster Grange’s First Dementia Friendly Community Event stays and day care are proving popular with several short stay residents already deciding to extend their stay or to book regular visits…
Here at Lancaster Grange we recently hosted our first event focused on dementia awareness, welcoming our local community into the home to learn more about living with the condition. Adam Hayward, Practice Development Matron for Dementia at Sherwood Forest Hospitals, held two information sessions and said: “With more than 800,000 people in the UK living with dementia, the need for individuals and society as a whole to be well informed is becoming a part of everyday life.” The event was supported by various groups, including the Alzheimer’s Society, Age UK and Sherwood Forest Hospitals that all had stands at the event. Anne Marie Harmer, Barchester’s Dementia Care Specialist, was there to discuss how better to understand dementia and how Barchester offer personalised care at Lancaster Grange to those living with dementia in our Memory Lane community. With over 50 people joining us our staff were thanked for their hospitality, with one attendee describing it as “a very well equipped venue offering excellent accommodation for residents”. Many comments were again received about the quality of our canapés, prepared freshly on site by Dan Brett, our Head Chef at Lancaster Grange. Sarah Beresford, Deputy Manager at the home, said “We
welcomed the opportunity to be able to host such a worthwhile event and at the same time showcase our home’s facilities, in particular, our recently opened Memory Lane Community. This is a purposefully design environment to assist individuals living with dementia with day-to-day activities.”
‘The home recently opened and my mother was one of the first guests, spending 2 weeks in respite care. It is a fantastic place; the care was outstanding, the staff catered for her every need and more. We could not have found a better place. I definitely recommend the home’
Our next date for your diary is Wednesday 26 March when from 5pm we are offering our first drop-in Advice Session on Legal and Financial issues. With a local Solicitor, a independent advisor in Care Fees Planning and our very own Caren on hand to answer your questions, refreshments will be available and all are welcome.
Why not join us for Coffee? Our monthly coffee mornings on the first Thursday of each month from 10.00am – 12.00pm have proved extremely successful. Entertainment has ranged from a saxophonist and musical bingo, to quizzes and our Christmas themed morning where the Fernwood Ladies Group joined us. We have already raised funds for several charities including Alzheimer’s Society and the British Heart Foundation and we are planning some great entertainment over the coming weeks. As well as offering a chance for you to stop, unwind and enjoy a chat you will also have an opportunity to make new friends, meet some of our staff and sample some of our lovely cakes!
Following the great feedback we have received recently, both from families and as part of our first external CQC inspection, we are so proud of the quality person-centred care that we have brought to the area. We have found that both respite
We are really looking forward to the coming year and hope to welcome you to Lancaster Grange sometime soon. If you would like any more information then please call Caren on 01636 594300
Lancaster Grange has already built up an excellent reputation within the local community and we regularly hold event and activities for our residents, relatives and our surrounding neighbours.

The long and the short of curtains A well-designed set of curtains can complement your architecture, provide a starting point for an interior design scheme and, in general, give your room a sophisticated feel. But choosing curtains can be confusing. Katherine Sorrell explains all. Headings and hangings The way in which a curtain hangs is determined by its heading, often created by a tape which is sewn onto the back of the curtain and pulled to form gathers, pleats or a variety of other styles. Some headings are only suitable for certain weights of fabric and sizes of curtain. For a less formal look, however, there are plenty of alternatives. Tab- and tie-tops are often found on ready-made curtains, though they can be ÀGGO\ WR GUDZ &XUWDLQV FDQ also be hung from a deep hem which is simply slid over a pole, from large eyelets punched in the top, from clips (magnetic ones are easy to use) or even just from hooks. Poles, tracks, wires and rods The most straightforward way to hang curtains is from a pole, ideal for short, straight runs. Poles might EH À[HG RU H[WHQGLQJ PDGH from wood, wrought iron, steel, brass, bamboo, acrylic or glass in various diameters (for various weights of 54

metal (better-looking) and be mounted either on the wall or the ceiling above the window.
Window disguises Curtains will cover tracks but only, of course, when they’re closed. When open, if you can’t stand the look of a bare track, you’ll need either a pelmet or a valance, usually DERXW RQH VL[WK RI WKH GHSWK of the curtain and slightly wider than the track. In-between lengths can look odd, unless VSHFLÀFDOO\ GHVLJQHG WR disguise awkward window proportions.
Fabric Curtains can be made of practically any fabric, from cotton and linen to velvet, silk or wool. As well as the conventional fabrics, consider unusual ones such DV WZHHG Ă HHFH PRKDLU RU

The heavier the fabric, the better it will hold a fold, though very heavy fabrics will be too bulky for smaller windows. Very light fabrics will look Ă RSS\ XQOHVV VXSSRUWHG E\ D lining. Bear in mind, too, that a large window will require metres of weighty fabric; check that your track or pole can support it.
Lining Lining is recommended for DOO FXUWDLQV H[FHSW VKHHUV as it helps fabric hang neatly and protects it from fading, dirt and condensation. It is usually made from a tightly woven fabric (cotton or polycotton) that resists shrinkage and creasing, and is often white or cream, though coloured linings are also
available. Thermal linings are coated RQ RQH VLGH WR UHà HFW KHDW back into the room, and can be almost as effective as double glazing when they are closed. Blackout lining has the same properties, but also blocks out light and, WR D FHUWDLQ H[WHQW QRLVH Inter-lining, as its name suggests, is sewn between the fabric and the lining to improve drape, body and heat retention. It’s worth knowing that linings can shrink at a different rate to curtains when washed, so either have them detachable or prepare to have the whole lot dry-cleaned. Stan the Sweep using the latest technology to keep your chimney clean Stan Hutchinson proprietor of Stan The Sweep Ltd offers a clean, efficient chimney cleaning service using the latest technology appropriate for all types of chimneys & flues. Fully insured member of the Guild of Master Chimney Sweep Stan won 2 awards in 2013. Best New Company awarded by the Guild & Newark Business awards Successful New Business. My regular customers include Ye Olde Bell Hotel at Barnby Moor, Langar Hall, Worksop Manor Mattersey Hall & Hodsock Priory. When I started sweeping I used traditional brush & rods, but after much research I decided to invest in power sweeping which
is truly the bees knees of modern sweeping. It is my job as a modern sweep to ensure the user has the knowledge to get the most out of their solid fuel appliance and it is my duty to leave them with a safe appliance or action plan to resolve any potentially dangerous issues. A popular service that I offer is the supply and fitting replacement stove bricks, glass and rope seal in addition the traditional extras such as birds nest removal, bird guard installation.

Pet Projects Pet owners are famously free with their cash: nothing’s too expensive for a beloved dog, cat, budgie or Vietnamese pot-bellied pig. It’s taken a while for the technology industry to notice, but now they have and there are all kinds of high-tech gizmos for your furry or feathered friends. )RUJHW DXWRPDWLF SHW ÁDSV DQG anti-bark collars: the new wave of pet tech includes health monitors, cameras and even exercisers. The star of this year’s Consumer Electronics Show or its pet division at least - was Voyce, which is essentially D ÀWQHVV WUDFNHU IRU GRJV ,W isn’t cheap - it’s around £200 for the collar and another £10 per month - but the pitch is that by monitoring your dog’s activity, breathing, heart rate and calories it’ll give you early warning of any potentially dangerous and expensive health problems. Voyce will go on sale later this year, and it’s entering a market that’s already looking a bit crowded: in addition to Voyce there are SHW ÀWQHVV WUDFNHUV LQFOXGLQJ Fitbark (around £60) and Whistle (also around £60). If you think that’s a bit odd, wait until you hear No More Woof: the £50 No More Woof 60
gadget promises to convert doggy brainwaves into human speech. Don’t expect to engage in scintillating conversation with your ShihTzu, though: the repertoire is currently limited to “I’m hungry”, “I’m tired”, and “who are you?” The developers say that No More Woof is a work in progress, though, and early sales of the device will enable them to make it smarter, more useful and - we hope - more comfortable. We can’t imagine our own dog putting up with a No More Woof headset for more than a few seconds. Another way to get an insight into your pet’s life is to shell out for an Eyenimal camera. The Petcam is available for cats and dogs, attaches to your pet’s collar and records whatever he or she sees; you can then transfer the footage to your computer. Expect to pay around £60. Some pet gadgets appear to be practical jokes, but the GoDogGo is perfectly serious: its Automatic Ball Thrower is a £99 gadget based on the automated tennis ball machines that tennis players use in training. The GoDogGo will happily hurl tennis balls 5 to 10 metres, exercising your dog while you sit back and

The people behind the Feather Tether hope you have, because their £12.99 bird harness means your bird can go wherever you are without fear of injury or “the tragedy of Á\ DZD\Vµ 7KH KDUQHVV FRPHV LQ ÀYH VL]HV DQG D UDQJH RI colours. If you can’t always be with your pet, Petcube might be the answer: it’s a smartphonepowered gadget which contains a wide-angle camera and microphone for streaming KLJK GHÀQLWLRQ YLGHR DQG audio to your iPhone or iPad. There are speakers and a low-intensity laser pointer to transmit your voice and amuse your cat respectively. It’ll cost around £160 when it goes on sale in May. If you don’t have a pet, the iPhone/iPad app also enables you to log into other people’s public Petcubes (with their permission) and annoy their pets instead - and if it’s just the laser pet toy you want, the Frolicat Bolt automatic laser toy is currently £20.01 on Amazon. ,PDJHV OHIW WR ULJKW 9R\FH ÀWQHVV tracker for dogs, Eyenimal Petcam, GoDogGo Automatic Ball Thrower, Petcube
