D-Day 1944: Democracy 1 Tyranny 0 By Ted Bruning On 6 June we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the victory of democracy over tyranny. And while most of the coverage of this great day will rightly focus RQ WKH XQÁLQFKLQJ VHOÁHVVQHVV of the 50,000 Allied soldiers, it’s worth sparing a moment to contemplate why democracy won. The young men confronting the Third Reich on D-Day may not have known it, but the soldiers opposing them had already been fatally undermined. A leadership that was corrupt, incompetent, divided, toadying and alternately swollen with pride and prostrated by fear, had made so many idiotic decisions over the past two years that no heroism on the part of its troops could redeem it. And at the heart of all the double-dealing, betrayal, and rottenness stood Adolf Hitler. After the invasion of Russia, Hitler more or less retreated to his Eastern HQ, surrounded by a small cadre of placemen, yes-men, courtiers and cronies who told him only what they thought he wanted to hear. He governed via a maze of overlapping bureaucracies ÀJKWLQJ IRU KLV IDYRXU $QG despite his remoteness he insisted on making even the smallest tactical decisions himself. This chaos effectively crippled the Germans defending Normandy. They had almost

6

no armoured support. Rommel, the commander on the ground, knew that tanks couldn’t move from rear to front because of Allied air-power, and wanted the armour right at the water’s edge. To the commander of Panzer Group West, Geyr von Shweppenburg, this was heresy. Hitler’s compromise was that the armour should be divided between them, but that von Schweppenburg couldn’t move without Hitler’s express orders – which, of course, came too late. Then there were the mythical divisions in Kent and Sussex that appeared to threaten the Pas de Calais. Their existence was conjured up by Allied deception specialists, and 15 German divisions remained north of the Seine to meet them. But these divisions had been fabricated by German army intelligence as part of a plot to discredit Himmler’s rival intelligence agency.

chimed with his preconceptions and fantasies and ignored sound advice that didn’t, are too numerous to relate; but they cost the Germans dear on D-Day, and they probably cost Germany the war. And here’s the contrast between tyranny and democracy. Churchill wasn’t short of bad ideas himself, trying to stop Nazi bombers by dropping parachute mines on them being one. And the Allied leaders argued bitterly. But Churchill and Roosevelt surrounded themselves with strong, capable advisers who weren’t afraid to argue their corners. Dowding, in charge of Fighter Command, threatened to resign in May 1940 when Churchill proposed to send PRUH ÀJKWHU VTXDGURQV WR prop up the French. And Churchill bowed to his superior judgement!

There should have been a ÁHHW RI ZDU ZLQQLQJ MHW ÀJKWHUV overhead, for the Germans had been ahead of the Allies in the technology. But Hitler cancelled work on a feasible jet because a crony, Willi Messerschmidt, persuaded him to favour the Komet rocket-plane instead. As a result the Me262 didn’t appear until far too late.

The Allies made mistakes. But the reason that the 159,000 troops who landed in Normandy broke through with fewer than 5,000 killed was that their leaders weren’t driven by fear of a despot; laid rational plans based on professional expertise and sound intelligence; and represented a society that could bury its differences and make VDFULÀFHV LQ GHIHQFH RI VKDUHG values.

On D-Day, democracy proved to be strong and tyranny weak.

Ian Green - AGI Landscapes LLP Ian has been in landscape and garden design for over 15 years. Formerly in the RAF, Ian studied horticulture and design at De Montfort University before turning his hobby into his profession when he left. Ian joined BNI Tennyson around 8 months ago and shares similar reasons for joining as Christine, he was impressed with the opportunity to make valuable business contacts and was serious about growing his business. BNI has given Ian a structured and relaxed system of meeting with like minded friendly business people all looking to benefit from their memberships. As Ian points out, an Englishman’s home is the garden, it’s the area that’s on show 365 days of the year, and is in effect “the biggest room in the

house” Part of his ethos is that once he has started on a garden, he remains until its finished – no job hopping from AGI, and a job is done properly the first time so it lasts and is a true reflection of the owners dreams. Projects can range from small patios to full mature garden makeovers, however the most popular service he offers is on new builds, where the builder leaves a few slabs and if you are lucky a bit of turf, these can transformed to reflect the personality of the home owners and can be full of character. Ian specialises in garden design and landscaping, unlike other businesses that perhaps add this into the rest of the things they do, therefore providing you with a dream garden which not only looks beautiful but is also practical and built to last.

Richard Jones – Energy My Way Under the Directorship of Richard Jones, a Chartered Building Surveyor with more than 20 years experience advising homeowners, corporate and public sector clients, EnergyMyWay gives advice on the most appropriate renewable technologies for every property, whether its your home or a business. EnergyMyWay is one of the few companies that provide unbiased advice on all the available products and so can advise on the best solution whether its a biomass boiler, heat pump or Solar PV. Richard joined BNI Tennyson Chapter a year ago, having visited several other networking groups that didn’t quite fit with his business needs. The single most impressive thing was the amount of business being passed between members at the weekly meeting, and that the members were practical & down to earth.

“BNI delivered more practical referrals than any other group I had visited” Richard likes the ethos of BNI and the commitment it has to helping businesses to grow, and has found it to be a huge part in the growth of his business. Like other members, Richard is passionate about his services, and caring for the environment. This, coupled with the Government incentives, meant that moving into Renewable Energy was a logical move for him to combine his qualifications as a Chartered Building Surveyor with these technologies. Recent projects include a new Biomass boiler at Burton Hathow Preparatory School, in Lincolnshire and installing ground mounted solar panels at The Garden House, Saxby. So if you would like to ! Lower your bills by generating your own energy at home or work ! Earn money from Feed-in Tariff and Renewable Heat Incentive ! Reduce carbon emissions and limit your carbon tax liabilities

Roma Williams – Aromatherapy & Massage Roma, has been running clinics, for 18 years, in Lincoln, Louth & Grimsby for many years, and its testament to her massage skills, (amongst others) that mean some clinics appointments are only available via a waiting list. Roma isn’t the usual sort of aromatherapist that you might think of. This isn’t the clinic you come to for a spot of light pampering and a girly day at the spa! The treatments here are designed for deep tissue, muscle reviving issues, the long term and deep seated problems that come from stress, illness and various medical problems such as migraine, IBS, Fibromyalgia and even Infertility. Roma joined BNI Tennyson approx 7 months ago and quickly recouped her membership cost. The decision to join wasn’t taken lightly - as a

therapist charging £20 on average for a treatment, I needed a lot of treatments to make my membership worthwhile! However she has found the support and reliability of the members to be invaluable in more ways than just increasing her business. O ne of the things she likes about BNI is the wealth of opportunities that being involved with other members brings, especially as a single practitioner; it can be a bit daunting sometimes when searching for various things. O ne of Roma’s clients is an award winning body builder, who has regular massages to break down the lactic acid and build an asymmetrical and accurate muscular system. O ther issues Roma has been successful in dealing with are infertility. To date 14 couples have gone on to have babies following a successful course the unique Swiss Reflex method, many of whom had been told the only option left to them was surgery. Roma is often referred by GPs and is also recognised by HSA.

Ring and see how much time and money we can save you. We provide:! Book-keeping and Management Information ! Payroll Services ! Year End Accounts and Tax Returns ! AAT Qualified and Licensed.

Ten top tips for running a small business 1. Surround yourself with good, knowledgeable people, could be accountant, marketing or just supportive family and friends and use their offers of help 2. Manage cash flow, it is cash flow that closes most businesses 3. Invoice sales as soon as possible after work is completed 4. Chase debtors, people who owe you money. 5. If they can’t pay all at once arrange a payment plan with them, better to get a little per month than none, and you will keep your customer 6. Customer service is all, no customers, no business 7. Produce a Profit & Loss, I would suggest more than once a year and use it to manage your business. This does not have to be accountant produced, show sales and analysed purchases, compare periods and act on the information it gives you. 8. Save some money every month for your tax bill which you will have if you have made more profit than the personal allowance, this year £10000, it can get very stressful as the deadline for payment approaches. 9. Get your annual accounts and tax return completed early so you know how much you may owe. 10. Expect to work very hard, have sleepless nights and stress, BUT when all goes well it is the best feeling in all the world for confidence and self esteem. GOOD LUCK

New rules for Separating Parents

The law in relation to considering what arrangements take place when parents separate has changed since the coming into force on the 22 April this year of the Children & Families Act 2014. The welfare of the child is still the court's paramount consideration. However, there are 3 significant changes to the previous law in the Children Act 1989. The first is to alter the wording that we use when we consider where the children are to live and with whom the child has contact. Previously, these were called Residence and Contact Orders and before that Custody and Access. This terminology now no longer exists and they will become simply Child Arrangement Orders. They will still regulate with whom a child is to live, spend time or otherwise have contact, and when a child is to live, spend time or otherwise have contact with any person. The second change is that before making any application to the court a person must attend a Family Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIA M). By doing this the government is seeking to encourage the use of mediation and the law was changed to make sure that separating couples always consider mediation as an alternative to a courtroom battle. There are some exemptions including where there has been domestic violence but these are limited. The final significant change relates to a principle of continued parental involvement. When the new law was being considered, there was consideration as to whether or not there should be a presumption of shared parenting. There was much discussion about this and ultimately the new Act does not go as far as to state that presumption but it does confirm the importance of children having an ongoing relationship with both their parents after families separate, where that is safe and it is in the child's best interests and that a meaningful relationship is not about equal division of time but the quality of parenting received by the child. It remains to be seen how the courts will approach matters in the future. What however is clear is that we now have a law which is designed to move away from contentious terms such as residence and contact to minimise conflict between separating parents and to bring a greater focus on practical issues of the day to day care of children. The intention is to ensure that both parents are involved in the upbringing of their children and that they agree wherever possible on the time that a child spends which each parent.

The Life List Proverbs for the 21st Century Technology moves with the times, but some things never seem to change. Take the perennial wisdom you learned at school, or from your parents, that you never really questioned. For example, why would a cat look at a queen? Maybe it’s time that those half-forgotten nuggets, rarely considered outside a cryptic crossword, had a proverbial reboot. See how many you still recognise here - and how many you agree with now! • A WiFi for a WiFi, and a Bluetooth for a Bluetooth • A fool and his credit card details are soon parted • Let sleeping blogs lie

Spoil your Dad this Father’s Day "Your Dad deserves to be treated on this special occasion and with our range of gift ideas we have the ideal present for the man who you care about most and will be sure to bring a smile to his face. We know Dads can be so hard to buy for, which is why Gracegentle is here to help you make your Dad feel special this Father’s Day with a great selection of Gifts your Dad can adorn & adore."

• Brevity is the soul of Twitter • He who laughs last has only just seen the amusing kitten clip on Youtube • What goes up must come downloadable • An app a day keeps the boredom away • Do judge an ebook by its cover - along with its spelling and punctuation • Beauty is only Photoshop deep • Early to bed, early to rise - the broadband must be on the blink again. • Many fans make light work of promoting your online event • Least said soonest trended • A little knowledge is a conspiracy website in the making • Talk is cheap, especially if you’re doing it on Skype • Fortune favourites the brave I hope that you Like this list and that it piqued your Pinterest. Hopefully I haven’t made a Hashtag RI LW RU IDOOHQ Ă DW RQ P\ Facebook. I think this new terminology is as addictive as the technology it describes! TUXFORD ACADEMY AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS ARTSMARK GOLD STATUS

On Friday 9th May Tuxford Academy were presented with the Artsmark Gold certificate by Penny Hargreaves, Trinity Artsmark Validator, for its outstanding dedication and vision throughout the school for creative arts. ‘I have been enormously impressed by the whole academy’s ethos and passion for what they do here’, said Penny. Gaining the Artsmark Gold certificate demonstrates a high level of imagination and drive that is embedded throughout the entire curriculum.’ Tuxford Academy is one of only five secondary schools in Nottinghamshire who currently hold Artsmark Gold, with only 15% of schools in England holding Artsmark status. Geoff Lloyd Principal of Tuxford Academy said at the ceremony, ‘It is incredibly important that we are all creative – right across the board. Tuxford as a town is changing – we now have two art galleries! It is fantastic that our community and academy are moving forward together.’ Achieving Artsmark status 18

demonstrates that Tuxford Academy has a number of very special qualities: • Excellent arts and cultural offer • Forward thinking and open to development • Committed to investing in staff and young people • Committed to listening to our students and providing opportunities for our community • Effective approach to building sustainable relationships with

arts and cultural organisations • Value the arts and culture through a broad and balanced curriculum Tori Richardson, Head of

Creative and Expressive Arts Faculty said of the achievement: ‘To achieve Artsmark Gold, we had to undergo a rigorous application process. We were assessed on many areas of our provision including arts in the curriculum, extra-curricular arts activities, how we work with artists and arts organisations and how well how our arts provision impacts on staff development and the wider community. We are absolutely thrilled with our new status.’

The importance of brushes! Any old brush will do?

Newark Paint & Hardware

Well it's an interesting thought that when we decorate we pick up the old brush from the shed or under the stairs & set to. An hour later we see a stray hair, (aka filament) followed shortly by another until we now are plucking filaments from our carefully painted skirting! So you may ask, what to do? Introducing synthetic paint brushes....... Newark Paint & Hardware, the specialist independent paint & hardware suppliers are pleased to announce the arrival of a new product to the UK market, known as Corona Brushes. Imagine painting walls, windows, skirtings, and doors in either water or solvent based paints & not getting any bristle or filament lost from your brushes. Corona synthetic brushes are individually formulated & constructed with a full head of 100% DuPont tm, Chinex (R) tapered synthetic filament to maximise superior paint release & clean up. They excel with both oil & water based paints, which are often difficult to brush on smoothly. Chisel tipped filaments aid cutting in, with nice straight lines. Corona brushes are available in varying sizes from 1 " to 4 " . Starter packs are in store, ranging from 2 brush packs to 6 brush packs, with prices starting from ÂŁ7.99. So if you are looking to start a painting project, call in & see Jon at Newark paint & Hardware for help & advice. 01636 672159

Southwell’s New Manager Passionate about the Sport For someone who spends virtually every waking hour at a racecourse, you would think Mark Clayton may opt for a different activity on those rare days off. But the new General M anager of Southwell Racecourse admits there’s a very blurred line between his job and his hobby. ‘Even though I’m now managing a racecourse that holds around 70 meetings a year, it doesn’t stop me going at least a couple of times a month when I’m off work,’ he admits. ‘It’s a bit of a dream come true for me and I’m relishing the challenge of leading the Southwell team.’ M ark’s passion for racing stems from an upbringing watching his father David as a jump jockey. W hile he didn’t follow him into the saddle (although he has recently taking up riding again in his spare time) M ark pursued a racing career as soon as he left university. ‘I started working at Weatherbys first and as the administrators of the sport it was a fantastic introduction into the industry,’ explains the 36-year-old. ‘I learned a lot during that time. O ne of my jobs was to write the tips in the racecards so I soon got to know a bit about the form. Weatherbys was a great grounding for me.’ From there M ark moved on to Huntingdon Racecourse as O perations M anager where he remained for three years before

moving on to Doncaster Racecourse in the same role, but looking after much bigger dates such as the 4 day St Leger Festival managing crowds of up to 33,000. ‘We started the music concerts after racing while I was there and booked bands such as M adness, Texas, McFly and Status Q uo,’ he added. ‘There were some hugely successful days at Doncaster. ‘The worst day of my working year was always the day after the St Leger Festival had finished because so much of my life went into that. I used to get such a buzz out of putting on such a great 4 days for so many people.’ Now M ark’s challenge is to replicate that feeling at the Nottinghamshire course where he hopes to introduce some similarly successful events. ‘Each of the Arena Racing Company-owned courses has their own personalities, which is what makes it so interesting,’ he added. ‘Southwell is not just a racecourse, but a very successful golf club as well. That means people can come here for a variety of reasons – golf, conferences and racing – which means we should be reaching

a cross-section of the community. ‘O ne of the challenges of racing all the time – which we can do here because we have a mixture of all-weather and jumps racing – is that it is hard to keep the numbers up on every fixture. ‘For me though, racing is about more than just watching horses running around a track – it is about the occasion and there should be an emphasis on making the whole day an event to remember. This could be based on a family fun day, our very popular Ladies’ Day or our beer festival,’ he commented. ‘We don’t pretend to be Ascot or Cheltenham but we do pride ourselves on having a much to offer to a lot of people.’

SĂŠbastien Loeb Interview Loeb does Pikes Peak - http://youtu.be/Y20CLumT2Sg ,W GLGQ¡W ODVW WRR ORQJ ² , FUDVKHG LW I’d had the GT Turbo for about a year before I drove it into a pole. I drove it too hard. I bought another one with a broken engine – there were lots of those around – and I swapped it over. , HYHQWXDOO\ SDUW H[FKDQJHG LW IRU D )LHVWD 56 7XUER This was no good in comparison as it had too much power going through the front wheels. It under-steered all over the place. I soon got rid of that and moved on to a Peugeot 205 Rallye, after that two 205 GTIs, then I swapped into a Saxo VTS. , KDYH WR VD\ WKH 6D[R ZDV P\ IDYRXULWH I used it to recce rallies in it before I competed in WKHP , PRGLĂ€HG LW ZLWK D VKRUW gearbox, big brakes, better suspension, a roll cage and sports seats. It was a road car, but very quick and great fun to drive. 7KHVH GD\V , GRQ¡W UHDOO\ KDYH PXFK RI D FDU FROOHFWLRQ I have my Citroen C4 WRC car that was given to me as a present. I will keep that forever – it’s very special. I like to change my other cars regularly though. I have a Citroen DS5, a Lamborghini Aventador and a Porsche 911 Turbo. I’m changing the latter for a Cayenne and am selling the Aventador – do you want to buy it? , XVHG WR GULYH HYHU\ZKHUH RQ WKH OLPLW I realised I had a talent behind the wheel in my Renault 5 when I was quicker than all my friends. I’ve always liked to drive through corners fast and picked up the skill of sliding when my GDG ZRXOG WDNH PH WR D Ă€HOG

I started off in a competition in France that had 15,000 entrants. I won the regionals and then everyone was pitched against each other LQ D QDWLRQDO Ă€QDO , ZRQ EXW WKH judge chose the second placed guy over me. So I tried again the following year and won it again. I then had a call from the guy who is now my team manager who spotted my perseverance. So my advice is: Keep trying. ,Q UDOO\ \RX QHHG JRRG QRWHV You need to be able to anticipate what’s coming up next and you can only do that with good pace notes. You have to focus on what you’re doing at that moment, maybe that’s adjusting brake pressure, but also think about what’s around the next bend. :LQQLQJ WKH :RUOG 5DOO\ &KDPSLRQVKLS LQ IURQW RI P\ IULHQGV DQG IDPLO\ was a career highlight. Racing is different to rallying: You’ve got other cars on the track at the same time for a start and you need to be perfect everywhere, with every braking point and every corner. He holds the record for fastest ascent of the buttock-clenching Pikes Peak hill climb – and if you haven’t seen the video, go do it now. But most of all he’s an all-round nice guy and a massive car nut. SÊbastien Loeb is a legend among rally car fans and a hero to petrol heads. After years of dominating the world’s rally stages with Citroen, the 40-yearold is now starting at the bottom rung of the ladder once more and taking on a new challenge – competing in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) with Citroen. W hat’s more, the staff have the time and expertise to guide you through the process of choosing your perfect frames and lenses. London Eye Bespoke Eyewear opened almost two years ago in response to a growing demand for more stylish spectacles. The store offers a London collection without London prices, and, with the latest in eyewear design and technology, clients go away with a stylish new look to suit their budget and lifestyle. The team will spend time with clients helping them to choose a frame they love — and often it’s something completely different from their usual choice. M any people find themselves spoilt for choice at London Eye Bespoke Eyewear, and choose more than one pair that they can coordinate with, for example, day wear or evening wear.

“ You wouldn’t dream of putting a pair of trainers on with a ballgown. It should be the same with glasses,” Paul said. With such a wide choice of brands and styles, there is something for everyone. O ne of the most popular looks is Geek Chic, which Paul said people were excited to find in Newark. “It’s something they haven’t been able to find here before, and they love it,” he said. Peoples, which has brought out a limited edition range to mark its 25th anniversary. Due to demand, London Eye Bespoke Eyewear has tripled its selection of children’s frames to include a wide range of fashion and designer frames. Children under 16 receive a free eye test on the NHS so they are entitled to the same choice in frames as everyone else. AQUA SANA SPA Nestled in Sherwood Forrest is the Aqua Sana Spa, part of Centre Parcs, and a very easy 25/30 min drive from Newark or Lincoln.

A welcome drink & fruit cup or pastry, were a lovely touch, while we waited to be shown around & have some basic information about the spa. Popular parts of the spa quickly became busy, but there were plenty of places & rooms to try out to find our own favourites. Like other modern spas, Aqua Sana has a series of rooms, alternating dry heat or steam, and becoming progressively hotter, around a central swimming pool & Jacuzzi. The cool down showers are interspersed along the way & vary from tropical rain showers to pulsing cold sprays. There's also an ice section, which was deliciously cold against my overheated skin. Water is freely available at several points, & you are encouraged to drink freely to prevent dehydration. Perhaps my favourite part of the experience was swimming in the outside pool in the rain. The steam from the pool, together with soft rain made me feel like I really was on holiday! I'm not sure Aqua Sana ordered that part of the experience but it was a zen moment for me! There was plenty of time to go through the steam & sauna rooms twice, before a late

lunch, which was served in a light & airy restaurant & very tasty. This was the only place we could render any criticism, & to be fair to Aqua Sana, I am very picky! The Chair leather was cracked on some of the chairs, however the friendliness of the staff and the delicious food more than made up for this. The restaurant offered a wide range of foods, with mains and desserts and scrumptious cake! The food service was spot on, beautifully presented and delicious. I've come to expect exceptionally high standards of hygiene in spas & Aqua Sana score highly here too, everywhere is spotless and clean. A fter lunch, its down to the serious business of relaxing! There are 2 levels at Aqua Sana, and so we happily went upstairs in search of loungers and heat. The heated waterbeds were popular and so were the marble loungers, but we soon found a space that suited us and spent some time just lying and chatting. It seemed a blink of eye before it was time to head to the treatment rooms, for our treatments. I had a DeclĂŠor Red Island

Exfoliating Ritual - Inspired by the island of M adagascar, fruit seeds, essential oils and spices are used to polish and perfect the skin before a relaxing massage with warm oils that leave skin nourished and exceptionally soft all over. A little slice of heaven! And my spa buddy had a facial that left her skin glowing for days. A fter our treatments the therapists took us to a different relaxation area and offered us fruit teas or water, to relax with and let the treatments sink in. We stayed there about another

half an hour before heading off to get changed and go home. We did get waylaid on the way out as there is a lovely shop and I had always wanted to try the Bare Minerals foundations advertised everywhere, which they stock here too. The obliging beauty consultant applied the Bare Minerals for me and I came away with some tips and tricks to make my look more finished. All in all the spa is heavenly and the treatments are lovely. I think I could easily have sent longer here and would definitely advise spending a day at Aqua Sana.

Enjoying the challenges that fostering brings "I enjoy being a foster carer very much, I’ve done it for about 10 years. I just enjoy giving, no two days are the same, no two weeks are the same. It’s nice to show the children what a normal family life is. My birth children enjoy it too; they’ve had a lot of positives from fostering as a family. We tend to foster under twos which we find suits our family but we’ve had newborns, two year olds, four year olds, emergency placements... my children have gone to bed and woken up to find new children here! W hen asked about the process Lorraine said, “Pre-approval training gave me the chance to meet other people and highlighted issues I hadn’t even thought of, it really helped me prepare for the next stage. Lorraine has looked after two children with disabilities, one since birth and the other

since the age of four months. Caring for children with complex needs can be challenging, “There are a lot of issues to deal with, especially with Hayley who has more complex needs, but I just take each day as it comes.” She added, “There’s a lot of help available and someone at the end of a phone to talk you through it.” W hen asked what qualities she felt were important Lorraine said having patience, a sense of humour and love to give as well as the ability to take life a day at a time were essential! Lorraine has four children of my own with three in their teenage years. “They are all great with the children I foster. We take lots of walks to

see the farm animal as well as trips to the seaside and soft play. It’s nice to just spend quality time together helping them learn and grow.” To anyone thinking about fostering or adoption Lorraine said “Even if it’s just a thought at the back of your mind, try it! It brings a lot to your life. "

Our First Summer Season at Lancaster Grange Here at Lancaster Grange we are currently putting the final touches to our summer programme of events. With regular dementia awareness events and our popular monthly coffee mornings now in place, it is so important to us to continue to welcome our local community into the home to both learn more about living with dementia and life at Lancaster Grange. Last week we were proud to sponsor the Carer Award 2014 category at the Nottingham Post Heroes Awards. With a 'glitzy' evening ceremony in Nottingham with celebrity presenters, members of the team were lucky enough to attend and the evening recognised remarkable individuals who think of others rather than themselves - with age really no barrier. The Award went to Sarah Miles, age 16 who was awarded for her dedication to caring for her mum Sharon who has rheumatoid arthritis and pulmonary disease at the age of just 54. Sarah became primary carer when her Dad passed away in 2011 from bone cancer. She said 'I was really excited about tonight, just seeing all the really amazing things people have done.... looking after my M um made me grow up really fast and made me think about others a lot more'. Runner up for the Award was Dorothy Fitzgerald. O ur congratulations go to both Sarah and Dorothy! O ur two major events are our Open Day on 20th June when we will be throwing open our doors to welcome visitors from 10am-4pm as part of the 2nd National Care Home O pen Day. With activities and refreshments throughout the day, we are hoping to see some new visitors to the home as well as some

regulars! With a Summer Fete with stalls, entertainment and games etc booked for Sat 12 July our First Birthday celebrations are also taking shape for Tue 5 August. Lancaster Grange has already built up an excellent reputation within the local community and we regularly hold event and activities for our residents, relatives and our surrounding neighbours. With some exciting developments surrounding the possible design and erection of a M emorial for fallen War heroes within our grounds, watch out for more details! Following the great feedback we have received recently, both from families and as part of our

first external CQC inspection, we are so proud of the quality person-centred care that we have brought to the area. We have found that both respite stays and day care are proving popular with several short stay residents already deciding to extend their stay or to book regular visits….. ‘The home recently opened and my mother was one of the first guests, spending 2 weeks in respite care. It is a fantastic place; the care was outstanding, the staff catered for her every need and more. We could not have found a better place. I definitely recommend the home’ Why not join us for Coffee? O ur monthly coffee mornings on the first Thursday of each month from 10.00am – 12.00pm have proved extremely successful. Entertainment has ranged from a saxophonist and musical bingo, to quizzes and our themed mornings which the Fernwood Ladies Group have attended. We have already raised funds for several charities including Alzheimer’s Society and the British Heart Foundation and we are planning some great entertainment over the coming weeks. As well as offering a chance for you to stop, unwind and enjoy a chat you will also have an opportunity to make new friends, meet some of our staff and sample some of our lovely cakes! We are really looking forward to the summer and hope to welcome you to Lancaster Grange sometime soon.
