Pick A Side: Apple or Android? Is Apple where it’s at, or are Android gadgets better buys?
Apple is due to launch the latest, greatest iPhone this September along with iOS 8, the latest version of its smartphone and tablet software. The phone will have a bigger screen and a better camera, but one thing won’t change: like all Apple gadgets, it won’t be cheap. Apple isn’t the only game in town, though. Google’s Android system has been updated too, and Android phones and tablets from the likes of Samsung, HTC, LG and Sony are often just as pretty and just as powerful as anything Apple makes - and in many cases they’re a good bit cheaper too. Android isn’t quite as simple or as elegant as Apple’s iOS, but there’s not much in it - and where Apple only makes a handful of devices, with Android there are dozens of phones and tablets to choose from. Unless you’re a big Apple fan then, is Android the smarter choice? Unfortunately it’s a bit more complicated than that. Apple and Google don’t just want to be your friend when you buy a phone or a tablet. They want to be part of your entire life. They want to be the 6
companies you from whom you buy your music, movies, TV programmes and books, the companies who provide your in-car entertainment and navigation systems, the companies who handle all your messages, voice and video calls, the companies who connect all of the appliances in your home and who track your KHDOWK DQG ÀWQHVV By the end of this year both ÀUPV ZLOO KDYH VPDUW ZDWFKHV or wristbands that monitor your vital signs, set-top boxes that stream music and video to your TV, software that connects to cars from the likes of Volvo, Nissan, Audi and Mercedes, music and movie streaming services and home automation systems - and that’s just the stuff we know about. This means you need to consider the bigger picture. It’s not just about the particular phone or tablet you want to buy, but what techy types call the ecosystem: the various things that the phone or tablet connects to and gets content from. For example, if you fancy Apple’s clever Apple TV system, you won’t get the best from it unless you also have an Apple phone or tablet; if you
want to use an Android smart watch, it’ll work best with an Android phone; if you’re a fan of iTunes Match you can’t use it on Android, and so on. Consider what your friends, family and colleagues use. Apple’s iMessage offers free SMS and MMS messages (and soon, voice messages too), but only to other iMessage users - and iMessage isn’t available on Android. FaceTime offers free video calling, but it can’t call Android users (although Google’s alternative, Hangouts, does work on Apple devices. As a rule of thumb Google services work on Apple kit but not vice-versa. Increasingly, then, choosing a phone or tablet is more like picking a football team to support or voting for a political party: the available choices all do essentially the same thing, but they do it in very different ways - and your choice might colour your life for many years to come. Images left to right: Apple family sharing only works on Apple devices, Both Apple (pictured) and Google KDYH 79 VHW WRS ER[HV &DU ÀUPV are embracing smartphone tech: this is Apple CarPlay, Fancy a smart watch? Android ones work best with Android phones.

SPOTLIGHT ON
FOSTERING A Remarkable Journey It’s been an exciting year. About 12 months ago, we went through panel and completed our assessment to become foster carers. Although the year hasn’t been without its challenges, it’s been highly rewarding and very worthwhile. When I tell people I’m a foster carer, lots of them say it’s something they’ve thought about and would like to get involved in. With that in mind, here’s a closer look at the first year of my fostering journey… As soon as we passed through panel last August, we eagerly awaited the phone call asking us if we were interested in offering a child a home. Our first placement was to provide respite for another carer who had to go to a funeral. I cared for her two boys for the day and it felt kind of scary, like being a childminder but with added responsibility. The day passed quickly and was reasonably easy; at least as easy as it can be when you are looking after two young strangers! Since then, I’ve got 8
to know the boys well and have enjoyed having them to stay when their carers have been on holiday. It’s been wonderful to watch them grow into more confident lads and see how much they’ve benefitted from a stable environment. Over the year, we’ve provided placements for many children – some for a weekend and others for a bit longer. When we were still quite new to the role, a young man came to us on a more permanent basis. This was our biggest challenge. As new carers, we lacked the experience to cope with some of the challenging behaviours and weren’t knowledgeable enough about the systems in place to be able to access the help and care that our agency were able to offer. The placement broke down and, as a family,
we were faced with feelings of failure. However, the agency’s support network really helped us to get through the aftermath and deal with our feelings. Their support network really benefited us as a family and helped us re-evaluate our whole idea of fostering. It turned a difficult time into a really enlightening experience. We carried out more respite over the next few weeks, before receiving a call about another child. The agency spent a lot of time talking us through this child’s background and needs. They were really encouraging, as they felt he was a really good

Use Locally - Issue 16 September 2014 match for us. Four months on and they’ve been proven right; this placement is entirely different and works very well within our family. He’s happy living with us and we’re happy to provide him with a loving home and the support he needs to get through difficult times. Foster children face different challenges to our own children. At some level, they know that living with their own parents isn’t possible but, given the choice, they’d still return to their family. This can be challenging, as we have to tread lightly over hurt feelings and difficult backgrounds. Helping these children develop a sense of belonging and positive self-esteem can seem hard at times, but nothing worthwhile ever came easy. In addition to brilliant support, our agency also offers plenty of training opportunities. I attend training days to learn about things like attachment, first aid, being safe and how to deal with the issues facing
children in care. It’s very different to having your own children and yet it’s very rewarding. I feel like we are really making a difference. Fostering is like nothing else I’ve ever done. When I look back at the highs and lows of the year, I feel proud of the journey we’ve undertaken and what we’ve achieved. It’s not easy, but it brings a sense of fulfilment that I don’t get anywhere else. If you have a spare room in your house, and space in your
mind and heart, I’d encourage you to take the first step and make that phone call. With the right support and a willing attitude, you can make a real difference to someone’s life. That’s something to be proud of. To find out more about fostering with my agency, please call Foster Care Associates (FCA) on 0800 169 8388, or visit their website at www.fosterwithfca.co.uk and mention that you read the article in Use Locally Magazine.
(This is a very personal account of my family’s journey to becoming foster carers and as such may not be used elsewhere, without our permission)

A Poignant but Perfect First Birthday Celebration A World War Two Memorial was unveiled recently as a tribute to servicemen and women who operated out of Balderton Airfield in Nottinghamshire. Veterans from The Royal Airforce Association in Balderton gathered on August 5th with residents and their families at a special service which was the centre piece of Lancaster Grange Care Home’s first anniversary celebrations. The brand new purpose built home at Fernwood Park Estate in Newark provides the highest quality residential and nursing care for older people, including those who are living with a dementia, such as Alzheimer’s. The home, named after the airmen who flew Lancaster Bombers from Newark, welcomed their first residents early in August 2013 and is built on the site of the airfield. Local students from Newark College also attended the celebrations and they were proud to see the memorial which they designed and constructed especially for the occasion. Jack Watson, 17, and Jamie Ragsdale-Low have just completed a City and Guilds welding and fabrication course. Jack said: “ We are really proud of it as it will give the residents something else to enjoy and it is was so moving to see it unveiled in front of all these people.” Jamie said: “There are nine of us who came up with the design ideas. To think it will be here for generations to come means this is a very proud moment. It is a very fitting tribute.” Their handiwork takes the shape of a water feature and will give a restful addition to the beautiful tranquil gardens. The service was followed by
entertainment from Strictly Canine Dog Training Group who performed clever moves and tricks much to the delight of their audience! Everyone enjoyed champagne and refreshments provided by the home’s Head Chef Dan and his team. The spectacular celebration cake themed around a Lancaster Bomber was cut by Howard Heeley, Secretary and Trustee of Newark Air Museum and one the

local heroes involved in the home’s opening event last year. One former resident Lillian Hunton, 87 stayed at Lancaster Grange for six months in respite care. Looking the picture of health, Lillian described how she had suffered a head injury after falling on a radiator whilst at home. She said: “I came here and the staff and care are just marvellous. I have my carer Jackie who is absolutely lovely and thanks to everyone at Lancaster Grange I could go home to Grantham and carry on being independent.” Lilian’s carer Jackie said: “It is like the extension of a family here. The event today gives the public a great sense of what the care home is all about. The staff are professional, the building is beautiful and clean and the food is lovely!” Caren Billingsley, General Manager said: “Learning about our resident's life stories and our reminiscence work, is a key part of our person-centred care approach. This valuable work helps us to connect with our residents on a personal level and enhance the overall care that we offer to them. All of our care plans are based upon the needs of our residents and we treat each person as an individual. “Today has been a very special day for all. It has been a poignant but perfect way to celebrate Lancaster Grange’s first year and to commemorate the brave men and women from our community who served in World War Two.”

Herb of the month:
Mint
Mint is a highly versatile herb used widely in teas, condiments, and sweets. It makes an excellent flavouring for lamb dishes and is often used as a sauce to go with a roast dinner. It is delicious when finely chopped and added to new potatoes, peas or green beans. Added to yoghurt with salt and pepper and even a little garlic, this will make a lovely cooling dressing for salad and in the summer goes particularly well with barbecued food. Mint and chocolate is a very popular combination both in purchased goods and for home made dishes. There are hundreds of variations of deserts that can be made with mint and white, milk or dark chocolate. Although mint has many uses at home, its use in commercially manufactured products is where it really comes into its own. Toothpaste, breath fresheners, chewing gum, indigestion remedies, sweets, ice-cream and even in some cigarettes, mint is very much part of modern life. The herb is very easy to grow – in fact a bit too easy as it can be invasive, so growing it in pots is recommended. Mint prefers a cool, moist spot in partial shade although, like many herbs, it will tolerate a wide range of conditions, and can also be grown in full sun. It can be. Although there are hundreds of varieties of mint, Menthe spicata (spearmint) is the most common.

Every branch actively supports the community in which it trades
"The wonderful quality food collected each night from Waitrose Lincoln has been a huge blessing to local Charities feeding homeless people in Lincolnshire. In addition to this, items such as bread and fresh products have enhanced our food parcels which are distributed daily to local families in crisis. Our partnership with Waitrose Lincoln is making a huge differenceto the lives of vulnerable people in the local community" Richard Humphrey, Senior Co-ordinator, His Church
In 2013 to celebrate Waitrose' 75th anniversary, the business gave every partner the value of ÂŁ7.50 to choose what we did within the local community. Independently, both Newark & Lincoln Branches, chose to buy trees and plant within the local community. Newark planted them around the area, schools and Sconce Park. Lincoln Branch worked with their PartnerVoice team, who represent all the Partners in Branch, and decided to use the funding to plant 600 trees in Willingham Woods and 4 trees outside the Lincoln store to celebrate partners past and present. The team plans to revisit the forest every year to check on the progress of growth. Both branches also work closely with the Jobcentre Plus and offer a service we called 'Feeding Britain's Future-Skills for Work'. Youngsters will take part in workshops with Waitrose Partner Co-ordination Managers covering topics including how to complete applications, mock interview practice and CV writing. They will be given the 28
opportunity to find out about career opportunities in the retail industry and take part in a product knowledge session. Lincoln also incorporated several 5 minute meetings with Partners during the day, so that they could tell the clients of their journeys into Waitrose and how they have progressed to date. These Partners
represented every section and every level in the Branch. The next session at is booked with Lincoln Job Centre for Tuesday 9th September. Lincoln has been working along side EBP ( Education Business Partnership) supporting schools in our county with a work experience programme. The pupils either come for one or two week placement where the Partners in Branch support the pupils so that they can fully embrace the ethos of Waitrose and what it is like to work in the food retail environment. Year to date we have offered 11 placements with two more due in October. During this programme we have been awarded 2 certificates on becoming a

Partners who work for Waitrose have the opportunity to go into the local community and do volunteering work, this initiative is called Partner Volunteering which allows partners, as all employees are known, to take time out of their daily routines to volunteer their skills, experience and time to local causes. Each branch has 250 volunteering hours for local charities, organisations and causes in their local community, which have been nominated by customers. During this last year we have also been running a scheme called 'Grow and Sell' to encourage the local school children to grow and sell their own produce. The scheme, which has trebled in size since its launch last year, will aim to inspire 7-11 year olds to grow their own produce during the summer months, learn where food comes from and develop entrepreneurial skills. This year, Waitrose has distributed 'Grow and Sell' kits to schools to help get their vegetable patches up and running. The kit, supplied by family business, Seed Pantry, contains vegetable seeds, equipment, step-by-step growing instructions and badges for children to designate roles for both the growing and selling elements of the scheme. A new feature of the kit is the inclusion of wild flower seeds, which will help boost the number of bees, butterflies and other pollinators in school hedgerows. This has proven to be very successful with the schools involved. Each store has a token scheme called Community Matters, where each month the store donates £1000 to local charities and causes voted for by our
customers as part of the green token scheme. 'It is really important to us that we support the community in which we trade and the Community Matters scheme helps us to support causes that are at the heart of the community.' Waitrose community Matters scheme is now in it's 5th year and has donated over £10 million to more than 30,00 charities and causes across the UK and Channel Islands. Organisations eligible for the Community Matters include local charities, schools and community groups. Forms for nominations are at the Welcome desks. Lincoln Branch has been operating a trial on behalf of Waitrose where we have been working with a charity group called "His Church" who are based at Market Rasen. As a Branch over the last 3 months, at the end of each day all our products which are going out of date, such as fruit, vegetables, bread, meats, ready meals, are collected by the "His Church" group, who then distribute the products on that evening around the county. These products through this charity are given to vulnerable groups in the county. Should "His Church" not be able to donate all the food that evening the products are then carefully selected and used for animal food so that nothing is wasted.

Waitrose Newark/Lincoln have many products, which are locally sourced such as bacon, honey, pork pies, rapeseed oil, yogurts and beers. All these are delivered direct to branch. Also at Lincoln, we have supported the community with talks and specialist evenings to various groups within the local area. This has been an opportunity for our team to show case their expertise on food knowledge and share this information with a show and tell and discussion. To date we have visited several schools, WI groups, Health groups and various charities. Waitrose prides itself on its Customer Service. All customer feedback is actioned and treated with the utmost urgency. Customers can give feedback by completing our survey via the Internet. Our email address is at the bottom of every receipt. This also puts them into a monthly draw where they could win £500 of Waitrose vouchers.

TUXFORD ACADEMY AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS ARTSMARK GOLD STATUS
On Friday 9th May Tuxford Academy were presented with the Artsmark Gold certificate by Penny Hargreaves, Trinity Artsmark Validator, for its outstanding dedication and vision throughout the school for creative arts. ‘I have been enormously impressed by the whole academy’s ethos and passion for what they do here’, said Penny. Gaining the Artsmark Gold certificate demonstrates a high level of imagination and drive that is embedded throughout the entire curriculum.’ Tuxford Academy is one of only five secondary schools in Nottinghamshire who currently hold Artsmark Gold, with only 15% of schools in England holding Artsmark status. Geoff Lloyd Principal of Tuxford Academy said at the ceremony, ‘It is incredibly important that we are all creative – right across the board. Tuxford as a town is changing – we now have two art galleries! It is fantastic that our community and academy are moving forward together.’ Achieving Artsmark status 36
demonstrates that Tuxford Academy has a number of very special qualities: • Excellent arts and cultural offer • Forward thinking and open to development • Committed to investing in staff and young people • Committed to listening to our students and providing opportunities for our community • Effective approach to building sustainable relationships with
arts and cultural organisations • Value the arts and culture through a broad and balanced curriculum Tori Richardson, Head of
Creative and Expressive Arts Faculty said of the achievement: ‘To achieve Artsmark Gold, we had to undergo a rigorous application process. We were assessed on many areas of our provision including arts in the curriculum, extra-curricular arts activities, how we work with artists and arts organisations and how well how our arts provision impacts on staff development and the wider community. We are absolutely thrilled with our new status.’

Successful first year
The singing studio
I am pleased to announce that since moving my business to the Newark area I have had a very successful first year. I have been pleasantly surprised at the wide range of students that come to me, from young people who are developing their vocal skills with a view to, perhaps choosing singing as a career, to retired people who now have the time to rediscover their singing voices and have started a new hobby. Interestingly, my students include a teenage guitarist who I coach in rock singing, to a lady who’s dream has always been to have the confidence to sing classical music. Providing References
There is no statutory obligation on an employer to provide a reference (in the absence of an express agreement to do so) but, if you do provide a reference for an employee or former employee, you have a duty to ensure that it is fair, truthful and accurate. This duty is owed to the recipient of the reference as well as to the employee. An important exception to an employer's freedom to refuse to provide a reference, is if that refusal is potentially discriminatory. To avoid any difficulties, some employers choose to provide only brief factual references, for example, confirming only job title and dates of employment. This type of reference is absolutely fine providing you give the same type of reference to all employees and you have no specific duty to provide a fuller reference. If, without reasonable care, you give an unfair, untrue or inaccurate reference, or you act in bad faith, or you make a disparaging statement about the employee without justification, then you may be faced with a claim for compensation. Likewise, if you provide a discriminatory reference, or refuse to provide a reference on discriminatory grounds. If an employee asks for a copy of a confidential reference you have written about them, you do not necessarily have to give it because of an exemption in the Data Protection Act. However it may be reasonable to do so, particularly if it is mainly factual in nature. However if you are the prospective employer references received from another person (including a previous employer) are treated differently and may be subject to disclosure to the prospective employee even if the referee refuses consent to that disclosure. Recommended good practice is that you should provide the information in a reference to the employee if they ask for it.

This group of Networkers passed over £2,ooo,ooo of business between them in the last year!
Business networking is a fantastic marketing tool for start-ups, small, medium and large businesses alike. Whether it’s for building your contact list, identifying referral partners or sourcing and getting introductions to specific potential clients, networking is the key.

The Tennyson chapter of BNI who are based in Lincoln were proud to announce on Friday 15th August that they have smashed their target of achieving over £2,000,000:00 of business passed in just 12 months. They’ve done this by building great relationships and trust giving them the opportunity to refer each other with confidence, and by working together as a team.
or a business just starting out, business networking is a great way to find those all-important first customers. For small businesses, networking is the best way to build your list of contacts. For medium-sized businesses it can be used to target and seek out companies with great synergy or businesses with a similar client base, as these make great referral partners. For larger companies business networking can be an excellent tool to find the right person in the right position that you need to speak to. Someone always knows someone who you need to contact! In fact, 97% of all businesses
suggest that customer referrals are an important source of new business. However, only 3% of businesses have any form of strategy to generate customer referral based business. Business and Marketing Support to hand! Why not contact Amanda for a chat regarding how she can help you improve you sales and business performance. Amanda wants to help businesses market their products and services, but has found that most of the companies are not market ready and quite a lot of the work she undertakes is project related work initially, to ensure that organisations and the structure of the companies are set up with the right ‘building blocks’ in order to be efficient and effective and be able to market and more importantly deliver an excellent service to customers and clients. Many businesses struggle with project related work whether its organising events, setting up the right staffing structure and measuring and managing performance or even understanding the business and what needs to be achieved in order to compete alongside and with the competition. She really enjoys the challenge of helping struggling businesses turn around by getting them back on track and raising their revenue… and profit margins. With some of the fast track businesses she is currently working with – putting in place the key building blocks for business growth is also one of her areas of expertise. Amanda’s clients include a large luxury hotel, a telecommunications provider and expanding office solutions company. They are all on the books for September. Within the work, that Amanda undertakes she likes to take time to get to know business owners to understand their personal needs and objectives as
well as the business ones. Its really important to support business owners as they approach worrying times and I like to think that the

project related work I undertake makes a real difference to how they approach the business problems they encounter. Having worked in London and overseas Amanda has many years experience within different sectors and businesses and an initial discussion and consultation for an hour over a ‘cuppa’ is free so that Amanda can understand what current difficulties you may be facing…in your business. Amanda Batham – your local Business and Marketing Consultant Comment: Amanda has been working with me now for a few months and we have established a new B2B business marketing brand including developing a new website and are marketing our telecommunication services in the East Midlands and further a field….. Summary Amanda gained her experience
offered a service in relation to project related work as a one off fee or monthly consultancy retainer fees can be agreed. This is a great way to offer my consultancy fees to clients as it means that they have flexibility and can buy as little or as many days a month to support them. I find that regular retainer fees per day each month work really well for clients. I believe it is important to be objective about a business and to understand the current needs, but also put in place plans for the future so that businesses can reach their potential and increase their revenue continue to grow and expand successfully… Amanda works across the East Midlands and is able to pop to you on site at your premises or meet in Newark or Lincoln… Help is at hand, so just call and have a chat….. you are not alone ….. everyone within business needs support and help….
So act now give her a call and arrange a meeting: 07939 508636.

Finance Boost Your Income: How to Make Money from Crafting By Ann Haldon www.cornerstonewebcontent.com
The growth in popularity of knitting, sewing and jewellerymaking has provided skilled crafters with a golden opportunity to supplement their income. Not only is it possible to make good money from a creative hobby such as this, but people young and old are starting successful businesses doing what they love. Many people make gifts for family and friends, but don’t always realise the potential to earn money from their hobby. 'LYHUVH LQà XHQFHV LQFOXGLQJ media interest, the economic collapse, and TV programmes such as The Great British Sewing Bee have all been instrumental in bringing about the revival of crafts once regarded as old-fashioned. So if you want to use your creativity to make some money, what are the best ways to sell, and how easy is it to get started?
Selling at craft fairs
handcrafted items. They remain a good option if you can spare several days a month to focus on selling, in addition to the time needed to produce your items. Craft fairs and vintage markets are held regularly throughout the year, but because they are so popular, it is advisable to book well in advance. Some venues provide tables, equipment and electrical sockets, but in most cases you’ll have to provide your own table and lighting. High quality spotlighting is a good investment for sellers with a long-term plan, and can encourage sales if the venue is dimly lit. In summary, here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of selling handmade goods at a craft fair: Advantages • Ability to plan ahead and book in advance • Involvement with the crafting community • Take commissions for further work • Build a loyal customer base in your own area or beyond • No postage or packing to consider
Disadvantages • Can be costly in terms of overheads: stall fee, lighting, card reader if you choose to take card payments • Takes up an entire day and more ‡ 0D\ EH WULDO DQG HUURU WR ÀQG the best fair or market • Bad weather could adversely LQà XHQFH \RXU VXFFHVV RQ WKH day

Mitsubishi PHEV It’s not very often a car comes along with the promise of ‘changing the game’ – but that’s exactly what Mitsubishi believes its new plug-in hybrid Outlander will do. We took it for a spin on and off road to see if we can believe the hype. By James Baggott, editor of CarDealerMagazine.co.uk
What is it? It’s an SUV with a seriously clever powertrain that combines a 2.0-litre petrol unit with battery technology. On pure electric the car can travel up to 32 miles, even at motorway speeds, and when the batteries are depleted an engine takes over to keep you motoring. All that clever technology has huge EHQHÀWV WRR VXFK DV QR URDG WD[ &RQJHVWLRQ &KDUJH H[HPSWLRQ and just 5% BIK for company car drivers. But that’s not all – you get all this with NO price premium over the equivalent diesel model. That’s an industry ÀUVW DQG WR SXW LW LQWR SHUVSHFWLYH Volvo’s plug-in hybrid V60 commands an £11,000 premium over the diesel. What’s under the bonnet? It’s not what’s under the bonnet that matters but what’s hidden in WKH à RRU D ZHGJH RI EDWWHULHV As the plug-in name suggests you can top these up every night, for around £1, from a normal three-pin plug. If you do no more than 30-odd miles a day, and top the car up every night, you’ll never use the fuel in the tank. On those occasions when a longer trip needs to be made, you can use the electric range and then rely on the petrol unit to power the wheels, which in itself will do 48mpg. The switch between the two XQLWV LV VHDPOHVV 2IÀFLDOO\ WKH combined economy is 148mpg, but this will vary depending on

where you use it and how often you charge the batteries. What’s the spec like? The bottom of the range model gets 18-inch alloys, cruise control, air-con, leather steering wheel, reversing camera, Bluetooth and a lot more. On higher spec models there’s a mobile phone App (Apple and Windows) that lets you change the heating settings, view current range and even operate the headlights and horn remotely. Also, it’s worth remembering this is a proper off-roader with 190mm ground clearance, four-wheel drive and Mitsubishi’s renowned reliability. Any rivals? 1RW UHDOO\ 7KLV LV WKH ÀUVW WUXH plug-in hybrid SUV. The closest thing to a rival comes from Volvo, in the shape of its S60 plug-in hybrid – but remember that costs nearly £50,000, and commands a £11,280 premium over the equivalent diesel. The Outlander PHEV starts at a ridiculous £28,249. What’s it like to drive? In EV mode it’s near silent and although the petrol unit is a little revvy when it kicks in, it’s not nasty. It’ll hit 60mph in 11 seconds, which is quicker than the diesel, and reaches a top speed of 106mph. It’s all very UHÀQHG WKRXJK DQG ZLQG DQG road noise is kept to a minimum. There are lots of clever tricks up the PHEVF’s sleeve too – like
the ability to hold a charge and use the petrol engine instead at the touch of a button, and the ability to recharge back to 80 per cent when left on tick over for just half an hour. Our only complaint would be a rather hard ride. The AOL Cars Verdict The biggest winners are company car drivers who effectively get a ÂŁ10,000 pay rise D \HDU LI WKH\¡UH KLJKHU UDWH WD[ payers, plus free fuel. The Myths That Just Won’t Die! You would imagine in the 21st century with the internet at our ďŹ ngertips, we’d all be wise to the old wives tales and myths that are bandied around. And Another Thing by Tom Hughes
I am getting married. This year. To a woman. Things are being set in motion, heads of steam are building, snowballs are rolling, rabbits are running. You get the picture. Sarah and I (or is it me and Sarah? I never know) met when we were old enough to know better, and fell in love anyway. But what started as a “bit of a do” has morphed into something much, much bigger. Where to start? Shoes, let’s start with the shoes. What is it about shoes and women? I have a pair of black shiny loafers for work. In fact I have three pairs. I also have a pair of brown slip-ons that I step into to go for the milk and the paper. The back of them are squashed down because sometimes I can’t be bothered putting them on properly if I’m say, just putting the bins out. The trainers I wear to go the gym are so tatty I think even the tramp in the precinct would turn his nose up at them. What I’m saying is that the look I strive for daily is shabby chic. OK, just shabby then. But as I recently discovered, shoes for women are a completely different kettle of 54
battered cod altogether. If weddings send women funny, then wedding shoes send them to planet Giggly Girly. Because I wanted Sarah’s day to be special, I needed to make sure that everything was perfect from the ground up. So we toddle off into Manchester. OK, so how GLIÀFXOW FDQ LW EH" <RX FDQ·W bloomin’ move for shoe shops. We wouldn’t be long surely? Sarah had a spring in her step as we marched determinedly past Clarks, Footlocker and all the other shoe wear emporiums that I have never seen the inside of. Then we stopped outside a posh looking outlet called Selfridges. After dodging the scary looking perfume sprayers prowling the make-up department, we arrived at the shoe concession, where we were suddenly surrounded by gorgeousness. Casually, I turned over one of the stilettoes. Oh, I thought to myself, that must be a European size….495. I put my glasses on – 495 quid!? The room started to spin. I looked up to see Sarah deep in
conversation with a handsome young man who was holding up a pair of sparkly shoes so delicate and strappy that they were almost invisible to the naked eye. Usually, if I see Sarah giggling and smiling with a good looking guy I get jealous. But when he stood up and did a little twirl of delight, I began to relax. I sat down next to a misty eyed Sarah who held up a shiny pink box and said, “Darling, these are the ones.” Do you remember the scene at the end of Pulp Fiction when Tim Roth opens the briefcase and a golden light shines out? A similar thing happened in Selfridges. The lid fell away and there they were, laying together like two perfect sparkly poodles. “Hello Tom, we are the Choo twins. My name is Jimmy and this is my brother - he’s called Jimmy Choo!” Sarah tried them on. She walked up and down, they did look amazing on her. “Can I have them, please?” “If it’s what you want darling, you can have them.” Sarah hugged me tight. She

Life Begins You’re never too old to make a difference by Kate McLelland What image does the word ‘volunteer’ conjure up for you? One of those fresh-faced stewards in their signature purple and red shirts, who welcomed visitors to the 2012 Olympic Games? A team with rubber boots and spades clearing mud and debris from a village pond? We tend to think of volunteering as a vigorous activity, best suited to those in their teens, twenties or thirties. However it’s important to resist this rather lazy assumption because it automatically rules out the vast army of people in their 50s, 60s, 70s (and even older) who have so much to offer the voluntary sector. Take 52 year old Louise Gooding, who became a mentor to Anna, a young refugee from Eritrea in East Africa. Louise, a professional writer whose grown up children had left home, heard about the opportunity through the Community Service Volunteers (CSV) Grandmentors scheme for people aged 50 years and over.
The organisation has developed its own freestanding programme, known as the Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme (RSVP), which encourages people aged 50+ to volunteer in their local area. RSVP can be contacted by telephone on 020 7643 1385 or by email at rsvpinfo@csv. org.uk. So how should you take your ÀUVW VWHSV WRZDUGV ZRUNLQJ as a volunteer? People decide to volunteer for a range of different reasons so you need to be clear about your motivation. As a starting point you may ÀQG LW XVHIXO WR OLVW WKH VNLOOV you already have and consider whether you want to use those skills in your volunteering role or develop new ones. The next thing to consider is the number of hours you have at your disposal. Are you still working, or have you retired? Do you have family members that need your support or do you live on your own? Do you live out of town? These are all factors that may affect the amount of time you have to give, so when you start out as
a volunteer it’s better to begin with a few hours at a time and gradually build your level of commitment. ,I \RX KDYH LQÀQLWH WLPH WR spare coupled with a desire to see more of the world, you could consider taking an adult ‘Gap Year’ abroad. Early Intervention has fast ecome a ‘hot topic’ in recent months, but a local charity has long been championing the benefits of intervening at the beginning of issues, preventing problems from spiralling downwards and becoming more engrained and expensive to solve, years before current government rhetoric. Think Children offers an early intervention service for children aged 4-11 with emerging emotional, social and/or behavioural issues. Parent/carers have told us that “Nobody wants to know until it’s too late!” The local charity provides an early intervention service at the onset of the problem with low-key, non-stigmatising one to one support for children who fall below the threshold for statutory intervention and for whom often there is often little or no other help available. Think Children’s intervention not only fills a gap in services for children at this level of need but can also prevent a problem from deteriorating to the point where expensive specialists are needed. The Think Children facilitators who support the children are local, grass-roots people, to whom the children can easily relate. Our in-house training is accredited at Level 3 by AIM and all facilitators must achieve a pass at that level. Each child is offered one-toone sessions that enable them to use the imaginary world of play to release pent-up emotions, clarify how they see their situation and move on with new coping skills. One child said “It has helped 62
me calm down and get all the unhappiness out of me and place happiness inside me”. The service targets all sections of a diverse community, with a wide range of presenting issues including low self-esteem, relationship issues, parental separation, bullying or bereavement and loss. In 2013/2014 Think Children supported 426 children in Nottinghamshire and Nottingham City, delivering 4686 sessions in a total of 67 schools. Statistics show that the majority of children continue to show improvement three months after the sessions have ended—demonstrating that these are fundamental, long-lasting changes that can help a child reach their full potential. Quotes from local schools: "All pupils…..have displayed significant improvements in behaviour, self-esteem, confidence and well-being. Parents, carers and school staff have made positive comments about the impact of the work and were very grateful that the children were able to
have the opportunity to access such high quality therapy.” “… the impact of his sessions was amazing. He was a child who you rarely saw smile but he would always be happy after his session and I think the sessions gave him a time to be honest about his feelings.” Quote from a child after their sessions has finished – “It made me feel better with school. It has helped me with my home life. I like how she understood how I felt. She also made me happy.”
