Penny’s Korner

I can’t believe this is the December issue! Where has this year gone? We here at Use Locally have been talking Christmas for a while now with all the events leading up to the Big Day. As I write this the countdown has begun for us all with 6 weeks to go! What do you like about Christmas? I personally love the build up with Christmas markets, the colder weather and warm drinks, Christmas parties and getting together with friends and family. It reminds me how grateful I am, when so many are not so fortunate. All the Team at Use Locally Wish You a Merry Christmas.

By Oliver Watson Todd

The holiday periods, especially Christmas dinner, can understandably be a particularly difficult time for Vegans and Vegetarians and any of those who don’t adhere to the culturally normal omnivorous diet everywhere. Especially such as those who are new to a meat-free diet yet are still living with friends or family that consume meat, dairy, or animal products of any kind. There is a plethora of quick and easy-to-make vegan recipes available to consumers, but what about when it comes to the traditional Christmas dinner? What about the age-old family traditions? The entire family sitting down after opening their presents, Mum having cooked up a whole buffet of food that will undoubtably always generate a week of leftovers, Dad carving the turkey, and everybody enjoying the holiday spirit. Now, all this can still be achieved, without the need for breaking the bank or sacrificing your taste buds.

The Traditional Christmas Dinner First, we must ask, what does the perfect traditional English Christmas Roast Dinner consist of? The centrepiece - A soft, juicy, tender, glazed turkey, cooked to perfection. Falling apart in your mouth with every bite. Ever so slightly burnt stuffing, crisp to the bite and filled with flavouring from the herbs within. Golden potatoes, roasted, but still fluffy on the inside. An overflowing bowl of creamy mash potato like a miniature cloud on the side of your plate. An abundance of vegetables from roasted carrots that snap when you bite into them, to golden, honey roasted parsnips that engulf the kitchen with the sweet smells of Christmas. All flooded with gravy that magically transforms your food into an island amidst a sea of brown, topped off with a variety of your favourite seasonal sauces. - All of this is making hungry just writing about it. 8

If you would like to remember an alternative Christmas without meat, or you were simply intrigued by the title, here are some top tips for you to consider.

The Turkey How on earth can you replace the beloved Turkey centre-piece you might now be asking - “some of the vegan alternatives just don’t taste the same” There is the option to completely ditch the Turkey as the centre-piece and try a plant-based dish as your main course. For example, try a Nut Roast or maybe even consider a Vegan Wellington. Vegan Chef and YouTube star Gaz Oakley, known by his channel name – Avant Garde Vegan, has a library of over 170 recipe videos. Although if you are committed to keeping to tradition, there are plenty of cruelty-free yet just as delicious options that are now available to consumers. Examples to look further into include, Tofurky, Gardein, Quorn Turk’y Roast, Vegan Whole Turkey, Celebration Field Roast or you can even do it yourself and make a Homemade Tofu Turkey.

Making the perfect Vegan Christmas just got a whole lot easier.

Stuffing Certain stuffing recipes require non-vegan ingredients such as eggs or butter. Butter is an easy replacement as there are multiple sunflower or olive spreads. Eggs are a little trickier to replace. An egg is used as an emulsifier in recipes. Allowing hydrophobic oils to mix with the water-soluble ingredients. Easily replicable with a vegan-friendly and tasty emulsifier such as lecithin or ground flaxseed.

Vegetables & Sides It goes without saying that vegetables are suitable for vegans. Just be sure to roast them without using animal products such as again, goose fat. caught in machinery. When it comes to making your roast potatoes just utterly perfect, some people prefer to roast using goose fat, but this can easily be replaced with another oil to cook with such as coconut or olive oil. With regards to the mashed potato, a plant-based milk can be just as effective in creating that delicious creamy texture.

Vegan Christmas Clothing Christmas isn’t all about the food. Christmas is a time for family. And what screams family more than matching jumpers? Wool Jumpers & Socks are understandably not suitable for vegans. Yet many would consider that second hand pieces of clothing, as they do not stimulate demand, could be bought and worn by vegans, or alternatively wearing a cotton polyester blend solves this. To conclude, it can be easy these days to trial a plant-based Christmas this year. A little research and an open mind can go a long way if you want to have the perfect vegan Christmas this year.

Dessert Dessert usually consisting of Christmas Pudding or Apple Pie, lathered in cream & fresh fruit on top as an extra, or eating as many mince pies as humanly possible. Apple Pie is already almost fully vegan, just be sure to check there is no egg used in the crusts. Vegan mince pies are becoming more and more common each year, I can personally testify that the Holland & Barrett vegan mince pies are so tasty they should be cautioned with an addiction warning. Although it wouldn’t be Christmas without chocolate filling stockings everywhere. Vegan chocolate tends to have a bad reputation for the lack of taste and texture yet I can again personally testify that although this can be the case for some, it is not true for the majority and only takes a willingness to try several different brands. My favourite is Moo-free. The traditional advent calendar is also easily made vegan with a non-dairy alternative.

Camargue Provence on the Wild Side As the river RhĂ´ne approaches the Mediterranean, it splits into the Grand RhĂ´ne and the Petit RhĂ´ne to form one of the largest deltas in Europe. This is the ‘Camargue’, an enticing place unlike anywhere else in France, where marshlands and lagoons glisten in the sun, fringed by broad windswept sands to the south while paddies, orchards and wheat spread on the fertile plain. But the deeper you head into the delta, the wilder the land strung with lakes and dunes, deserted beaches, sand bars, meadows and ponds festooned in tamarisks and yellow irises – and at the heart of it all, the saltwater lagoon of Vaccarès, which looks almost like a sea. LEO

March 21st - April 20th

24th - August 23rd

Upsetting news about a community issue will arrive on the 12th, due to a stressful Full Moon. Government officials have been cutting deals behind the scenes. These negotiations will have a negative impact on the people living in your neighbourhood. It would be wise to band together and devise a plan for defying these orders. There is power in numbers.

TAURUS April 21st - May 21st Payment for a job well done will be less than expected. An aggravating Full Moon on the 12th will trigger an angry exchange with a deceptive client or customer. If you loaned money to a friend, it will be difficult to be repaid. The person you helped will claim they were given this sum as a gift. Let this be a lesson about mixing friendship with finance. Combining the two is often disastrous.

Things will be tense on the friendship front in mid-December. The Full Moon on the 12th will fuel tempers. Resist the temptation to respond to an obnoxious or offensive remark on social media. You may feel compelled to defend a group who is being attacked. Injecting yourself into this conversation will be like pouring gasoline on a smouldering fire.

SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - Dec 21st A troubled relationship will reach the breaking point on the 12th. That's when the Full Moon will urge you to walk away from a manipulative friend, romantic partner or business associate. You once found their whimsical ways charming. Now you recognise their quirky behaviour as manipulative. Being constantly thrown off balance has stopped you from building a secure foundation.

VIRGO

CAPRICORN

August 24th - Sept 23rd

December 22nd - Jan 20th

A tense career situation will come to a head on the 12th, due to a powerful Full Moon. You may confront a rival who has been spreading lies about you. It's possible you'll employer will side with them instead of you. If this happens, stay calm. Don't quit in a huff. Begin looking for another professional opportunity. It's easier to find a position when you already have one.

A health problem will demand your attention on the 12th, due to a disruptive Full Moon. If you're not satisfied with a doctor's prognosis, get a second opinion. It may be necessary to see a specialist to pinpoint a problem. Be patient and do everything in your power to cultivate wellness. If this means avoiding sugar, fat and alcohol during the Christmas season, so be it.

GEMINI

LIBRA

AQUARIUS

May 22nd - June 21st

September 24th - Oct 23rd

January 21st - Feb 19th

You'll be placed in an awkward position in the middle of December. Your boss may ask you to take the blame for their mistake on the 12th, when a Full Moon threatens to expose their ineptitude. It's better to walk away from a secure position than serve as a human shield. Tender your resignation or turn down a promotion. A Solar Eclipse on the 26th will reap handsome financial rewards.

CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd Troubling information will come to light on the 12th, due to a revelatory Full Moon. Someone who has been pretending to have expert knowledge will be exposed as a fraud. Let this be a lesson about putting your faith in others. When you are compelled by a charismatic figure, do some research into their background. You may discover their claims have no basis in reality.

On the 12th, you might experience a series of frustrating travel delays. The more flexible you are about this situation, the better. If your flight is overbooked, it would be wise to accept a seat on a plane that leaves the next day. Relaxing in a hotel room will be much better than waiting in an airport terminal, waiting for a flight that will ultimately be cancelled.

SCORPIO October 24th - Nov 22nd An unexpected expense could strain your bank account on the 12th. That's when the Full Moon will shed light on a shortage. You might have to buy additional memory for your computer or increase your router bandwidth. Although making this outlay will make you unhappy, it is necessary. Having reliable equipment that meets your needs is critical to your success in midDecember.

A romance will hit a rocky patch in December. The Full Moon in the middle of the month could reveal something troubling about your partner's financial situation. If you discover your amour has been less than honest about their income or debts, tread carefully. The last thing you want is to be implicated in their deceptions.

PISCES Feb 20th - March 20th The Full Moon on the 12th will force a family confrontation. You've been turning a blind eye to a troubled relative's behaviour. It will be impossible to ignore these outbursts in mid-December. You will have to issue an ultimatum. Until your loved one gets treatment for an addiction or health affliction, you must withdraw your support. Friends will be supportive throughout Christmas.

Your Festive Gadget Survival Guide Make sure your technology is happy this Christmas. For many households, Christmas means lots of new gadgets under the tree – and if you’re not prepared, that could mean a distinct lack of Christmas cheer if people can’t play with their new toys on Christmas morning. It’s still wise to have batteries of all sizes (ideally rechargeable ones) in common sizes such as AA, AAA and CR2032 for things like talking toys, games console controllers, radio car controllers and so on, but it might be wise to consider a few other things too. First of all, make sure you have a multi-tool or small toolkit to hand. Many toys now come either in hard-to-open transparent plastic, or with lots of cable ties and screws to stop people stealing them from their packaging. Some sharp scissors and a small cross-head screwdriver will be a big help here. Think about chargers, too. Not all gadgets such as phones and tablets arrive charged, and the ones that do are going to need charging after a morning of intensive use. Check the devices that Santa’s bringing either come with charging cables or that you have the appropriate ones already. We’ve also found portable chargers (power banks) to be really useful for long trips to visit the family; if your car has a power/cigar lighter socket, investing in a USB adapter and a very long phone charging cable could be worthwhile. One of the biggest Christmas technology traumas is when games controllers are involved. Now that most games require an internet connection, consoles need to be running the most up-to-date system software before use, and downloading and installing that software can take hours. It’ll take longer still on Christmas morning if half of 18

The HARD truth about your water Are you fed up of descaling the kettle of limescale or tired of cleaning the shower screen from those white marks? Are you worried that your pipes are becoming embedded with limescale? Are you aware that your appliances are getting scaled every time you use them? Aqua Concepts have the solution, and have been helping people in hard water areas since 2011. It is not just your home that hard water affects. Your hair and skin may be damaged also. In a recent study at the University of Sheffield, Dr. Danby shows that hard water damages the skin surface and could be the cause of dry skin conditions such as eczema, fitting a water softener system may ease the symptoms. Aqua Concepts have a long relationship with water treatment. Prior to the start of Aqua Concepts, Andrew worked as a technician for Ecowater systems, and has a vast knowledge on how to improve your water, so that it feels like silk on your skin. Aqua Concepts is aware of the impact that bottled water is having on our planet. For every 1 litre of bottled water that is produced, 3 litres of water is wasted to make the bottle, which ends up in a land-fill.

As most often bottled water is just tap water, start filtering your own water to be chemical free with our system Only ÂŁ125.00

If you would like a free home water test, and see how the silky water feels call today on 01400 288 008.

tend to suit larger, period rooms (pelmets, swags and tails may also be an option in this case), while simple curtains are more suited to modern properties. Check the heading, as this determines the way the curtain will hang: usually, a tape sewn to the top of the fabric is pulled to form either loose gathers or more formal pleats, and is hooked onto curtain rings. Other styles include tab, tie, eyelet or hemmed tops, which look decorative but can sometimes be harder to draw.

Choosing A Window Treatment Curtains, blinds or even shutters – the right window treatment can make or break a room. We look at how to choose the best option for your home. While maintaining privacy and blocking early-morning light may be their primary functions, window treatments are also a key part of an interior design scheme, adding colour, pattern, texture and an essential element of sophistication. fading, dirt and condensation. Blackout linings are ideal in a bedroom, while thermal linings can be as effective an insulator as double glazing. Blinds Perfect for smaller rooms, blinds are also great for modern homes and in EDWKURRPV DQG NLWFKHQV ° DQG they tend to be a lot cheaper than curtains. Roller blinds are the most basic style, while roll-up versions, tied with tape or ribbon, have a pretty yet still simple look. Roman blinds are smart and versatile, suiting almost every room. Choose fabric that is midweight and not too textured, as blinds need to roll or fold easily against themselves.

There is nothing to stop you combining more than one colour or pattern, in the form of smart, contrast borders down the sides or along the bottom of the blind. And sometimes it is a good idea to combine a plain and a sheer fabric, to allow light through at the top of the window while giving privacy beneath. Plain blinds can be boosted with a good-looking SXOO WKLQN OHDWKHU JODVV UDIžD stone or rope) or trim (such as ribbon, pom poms, ric rac, stitching, fringing, shells or EXWWRQV ,I \RX ZDQW D GUHVVLHU look, add curtains as well. Shutters Good-looking in an unfussy way, shutters suit both old and new properties. They are

expensive but are good at blocking out sound and light, and can even provide extra security. The plainest shutters feature a timber frame and solid centre panel (a local joiner should be able to make them for you), while louvred versions (from specialist shutter companies) offer privacy while also controlling light. Both types can be left as natural wood or painted whatever colour you like. They can be made as a pair, bi-fold, tri-fold or more, either fullheight, half-height or one set DERYH DQRWKHU DQG žWWHG ZLWKLQ a reveal or to fold back against the walls. By Katherine Sorrell

Pruning Perfection Winter is perfect for pruning and cutting back woody plants, so take advantage of the fact that deciduous trees, shrubs, hedges and climbers are now bare of leaves and get stuck in. It is only in really icy or frosty weather that you need to hold back.

Continued on page 32

Remember that for your SUXQLQJ WR UHDOO\ EHQH¾W WKH plant, you need the right tools. For a relatively small expanse of hedge or a shrub that needs roughly reshaping, a good, sharp pair of well-oiled shears should do the job. When cutting along a hedge top, a guide line – such as a taut string – will help you get a neat, level surface. For larger hedges a powered hedge cutter or hedge trimmer is preferable, though make sure it is not too heavy and you can use it safely. For removal of stems at various heights and of varying thicknesses it is worth using 30

‘loppers’. These are available with various handle lengths (some even have telescopic handles), so that you can reach up higher without having to use a ladder or platform. They are much better at cutting through relatively thick stems than shears or secateurs and yet also allow for accurate positioning of the cut. Wear goggles and ideally protective headgear if you have to cut back branches above your head.

Create sloping cuts whenever you can so that rain and moisture runs off Everybody with even just a single shrub in their garden needs a pair of secateurs for pruning of smaller woody stems, and the better their quality the better the job you can do. Provided they are good and sharp, you can

make a perfectly clean, neat and accurate cut. Always cut to an outward-facing bud (so that the new growth produced from that bud grows outwards). Secateurs are good for removing dead and dying stems as well as for formative pruning (where you are helping to ensure the plant grows in the direction you want it to), and for pruning to encourage ¿RZHULQJ ,I \RX DUH SUXQLQJ out dead and dying material, bin it or burn it in case it carries infection. A proper pruning saw is necessary for pruning out or tidying up larger branches on trees and shrubs. If you choose one with one (or better still two) parallel lines of teeth you can create a very accurate and clean cut with relatively little effort. This is the perfect tool if you have fruit trees to prune. Use a sawing action for best results and again, if cutting above your head, wear goggles to protect your eyes from falling sawdust and debris. Make the pruning cut a few millimetres or so away from the main stem from which the branch you are removing is joined. A cut like this will heal over much more quickly and the wound size will be smaller and so less prone to fungal rotting. MORE PRUNING TIPS Before you get carried away, check the best pruning time for the plants you have in mind. Most hedges and many shrubs

can be cut back now, but IRU D JRRG GLVSOD\ RI ¿RZHUV make sure that you prune at the correct time or else you may end up pruning out the SODQWµV ¿RZHULQJ SRWHQWLDO Some trees, mainly those in the Prunus family – such as edible and ornamental cherries, plums, apricots, damsons, peaches and nectarines – are very prone to a potentially fatal fungal infection known as ‘silver leaf’. This is less likely to cause problems if these trees are pruned in the summer months, so don’t

prune them now unless there is no alternative and you are prepared to take the risk! Always make sure that pruning tools are really sharp. If they are in the slightest bit blunt then the job will not only take more effort, but you may end up with the plant being damaged as the cut made will be jagged or stems may be crushed. Create sloping cuts whenever you can so that rain and moisture runs off and does not accumulate (wetness encourages wood

rotting), and cut close to but not on top of a bud to allow new growth without dieback. When you are using shears or large scale trimmers you cannot do this, but always do so with secateurs, loppers and saws. Stand back from time to time when you are pruning to check the overall appearance of the plant and to help decide where you should prune next – if you are close up it is harder to see how you are affecting the overall shape of the plant. “Put him between the Spice Girls,” Barry said. “Have you JRW WKH ¾VK"³ “Yep.” Phil held up the bucket. “Let’s begin.” Barry undid the padlock and opened the gate. The birds did not move. “It’s not working,” Phil said. “They’re not buying it.” “You’d think they’d be thrilled to parade in front of all these celebrities.” Barry said. “What’s wrong with them?”

The Penguin Parade “Chuck it all in this wheelbarrow,” Barry said. “How many did you manage to get?” “I’ve got Freddie Mercury, Elvis, Prince Philip and Batman,” Phil said, glad to unburden himself of his awkward load of cardboard. “Prince Philip?” Barry snorted. “Who lent you that?” “It’s Theresa’s. Don’t ask me what she does with it. Did you manage to get anyone?” “I’ve got Mr Bean and two Spice Girls,” Barry said proudly. “Found them in a skip. How did Theresa take you working today?” “She’s not delighted.” Phil pushed the loaded wheelbarrow towards the penguin enclosure. “I didn’t tell her I’d volunteered.” “Zoo animals still have to be fed,” Barry said, “even on Christmas day.” “She grumbled, but she’s gone off to my folks.” Phil shrugged. “She’ll have a nice time.” “Let’s get on with it, shall we? 34

Don’t want to keep our stars waiting.” Every day at noon the Humboldt penguins performed their parade. They’d waddle out of their enclosure and over the little bridge for some well-deserved applause from the zoo visitors. It was the highlight of the penguins’ day. But Christmas was the one day of the year the zoo was closed. There would be no audience. Barry and Phil knew that the birds would be disappointed. Last year they sulked for a week. “Let’s set these things out along the fence,” Barry said, unfolding a life-size cardboard cutout of Elvis. “Should we group them together or spread them out?” “Let’s see how well they stand up,” Phil said. “I don’t want them blowing over, that’ll really freak the birds out.” The penguins were already assembling by their gate and watching the men with interest. “Shall we bother with Batman?” Phil said.

“We haven’t got enough people,” Barry said. “I swear those birds have done a headcount.” The penguins refused to parade. Mr Bean wobbled over in the wind. “This is a disaster.” Phil forlornly shook the bucket of ¾VK ²$IWHU DOO WKLV HIIRUW ³ “Phil, wait!” a familiar voice called breathlessly. Phil and Barry turned around to see a group of people jogging towards them. “It’s Theresa!” Phil clapped with joy. “She’s brought the whole family with her.” “We’ve come to support the penguins.” Theresa grinned. “How did you guess?” Phil gave her a hug. “When I saw you’d taken my Philip I put two and two together,” she said. Now that the crowd had grown to an acceptable size, the birds waddled dutifully over their little bridge. Everyone cheered. $QG LI WKH SHQJXLQV WKRXJKW that certain members of the audience seemed a little stiff, they were too polite and professional to mention it. By Jackie Brewster

to Britain, there will be no placid lying down of the people in submission before him, as we have seen, alas, in other countries, said Churchill in a BBC broadcast in July 1940. “We shall defend every village, every town, and every city.

The Real Dad’s Army: 75 Years Since the Home Guard Stood Down This summer, the popular sitcom Dad’s Army was back on our screens, with a new generation of actors recreating lost episodes. But what did the Home Guard – the real ‘Dad’s Army’ – really do? We take a look as the Home Guard marks the 75th anniversary of its decommissioning. On 14 May 1940, Secretary of State for War Anthony Eden called for men between 17 and 65 to enrol in a new force, the Local Defence Volunteers (LDV). The Government feared an invasion might be imminent: just days earlier, the Germans had started 40

their attack on Belgium and the Netherlands, dropping soldiers by parachute, and British troops had been pushed back to the Channel ports. 2IžFLDOO\ WKH /'9 ZDV RQO\ RSHQ WR PHQ ZKR KDG žUHG D ULÂżH DQG ZHUH FDSDEOH RI free movement, but this rule was often ignored. However, over time, they were furnished with better uniforms and weaponry, and the average age of members decreased as older men retired and younger men joined before enlisting in the army. It proved useful training for them and Home Guard numbers swelled to 1.7 million. Home Guard members were trained in key skills as they were readied for invasion. The importance of their role and their involvement in the war effort is perhaps best underlined by a sad statistic: over the course of the war, 1,206 men of the Home Guard were killed on duty or later died of their wounds. The tiny pieces can also lodge in their eyes and set up a nasty irritation. Baubles Glass baubles present a serious danger to pets if broken, and also pose a choking hazard.

Pretty Christmas Trimmings That Can Harm Your Pets The glitz and glitter of Christmas is so pretty that it’s easy to forget the potential dangers of our festive trimmings, so here are some of the possible hazards that may threaten your pet at this time of year. Spray snow Spray snow looks very pretty but it does contain chemicals that are harmful to animals. If your cat or dog licks the substance they could suffer from sickness and diarrhoea or other gastrointestinal problems. Tinsel Tinsel can cause a blockage in the intestines if

Fairy lights Your pet can be electrocuted by fairy lights if bitten through, but there’s also a danger they could become tangled in the lights and be unable to free themselves if they’re alone in the house. Silica gel Silica gel sachets are very small and your pet may eat them without you noticing. These sachets can cause gastrointestinal upset, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Whilst not wishing to diminish the joy of Christmas, it pays to make sure your pets are safe this festive season. Many of these trimmings aren’t obviously hazardous but they do have the potential to cause serious harm. burgesspetcare.com/blog/post.php?s=2017-12-04christmas-perils

Use Locally - Issue 80 December 2019 it a lower centre of gravity. This combined with a seating position lower than other SUVs, the UX feels more car-like to manoeuvre. While unintended for off-roading, an all-wheel-drive version with a separate dedicated electric motor generator integrated into the rear differential offers more traction on slippery surfaces.

Lexus Luxury Goes Beyond Looks The Lexus UX 250 will certainly turn heads, and not from the noise. Its striking looks and angles make for a distinctive and arresting aesthetic. Not everyone will like it, but it’s far more interesting than a BMW or Audi. The rear lamps connect in a full-width strip, giving it a hi-tech appearance. Triggered by ambient light levels, the auto-illuminating front LED lights give the aggressive front end a poised stance; then there’s that huge front grille that almost wraps around the front, unlike anything else on the market.

Below that sits F-Sport, which boasts features such as sports suspension, sports seats and a black grille, bumpers and side sills. The Premium Plus Pack includes leather seats, privacy glass, bigger 18in alloy wheels, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, keyless entry and a powered tailgate. The Tech and Sound pack includes the parking sensors, electric seats and highHQG KL ž

Interior The front of the UX’s cabin is where Lexus excels. The space feels generous and welcoming, material quality is excellent, and features nice touches like the optional dashboard covering that resembles textured Japanese washi paper.

The seats are comfortable for short or long rides, while rear space is slightly below average for additional passengers. Passenger storage is reasonable, but not superb. There’s a smallish glovebox and front door bins, along with a decent cubby under the central armrest and a couple of cup holders. Rear-seat passengers are served with a couple of map pockets but no door bins.

As usual, Lexus touts its superior craftsmanship – called Takumi – and named the topend trim package after it. Takumi spec is equipped with a larger 10.3in infotainment screen and DVD player, an upgraded sound system, heads-up display, leather upholstery and sunroof.

The Drive On the open road the UX combines precise steering with good body control and resilient grip to feel quite keen LQ FRUQHUV ,W GRHVQÂľW ÂżRS DURXQG the way a tall SUV might, due to its lightweight aluminium and composite panels which give

The brake pedal can feel awkward, owing to the hybrid system trying to balance regenerative braking to charge the battery with conventional deceleration. Speaking of the hybrid system, it features a new four-cylinder 176bhp 2.0-litre petrol-electric hybrid powertrain with directshift continuously variable transmission (CVT). It is VHOI FKDUJLQJ DQG EHQHžWV from regenerative braking, so there’s no plug to worry about. When there’s enough battery energy it’s possible to pull away on electric only (EV) power. However, at about 1,600kgs, pulling away on electric alone means being very gentle with the pedal. Often the engine will take over as is required for faster acceleration. But in a car park, RU KHDY\ WUDIžF \RX FRXOG easily stick to electric alone. All this results in economy estimates of 68.9-65.7mpg and emissions of 96-103g/km CO2 (for the 17- and 18-inch wheel front-wheel drive models). Infotainment System Lexus prides itself on forging its own path, but in some instances this hasn’t been successful. Take the sat nav, for example, which is awkward and notoriously žGGO\ ,WÂľV DQ ROGHU SRVWFRGH based system, which makes searching by house or road

There’s no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto either, despite there being two USB ports available. The remote is a mousematlike controller, which is touch-sensitive and used to select options on screen. Its high sensitivity makes using it, especially while driving, a tricky proposition. Luckily, the UX’s panel of physical buttons below the dash offer more conventional controls for climate and more. Overall, the Lexus UX doesn’t lack the tech itself, just intuitive ways to interact with it. In a tax (and social) environment increasingly concerned with emissions, the UX hybrid offers a unique solution and silhouette in a
