The 365 Day Conservatory As a nation, we love our conservatories. Where living space is often tight, a conservatory can give us just that little bit more room to relax and not be on top of each other. It can be somewhere for the kids to play so that their toys aren’t scattered all over the living room floor; it can be a useful home office space or even the longed for dining room to make meal times easier. The problem is that most conservatories can only be used when the weather dictates and are, therefore, just dumping grounds. If the temperature is hovering around the lower end of the thermometer then no amount of heating will allow us to sit comfortably in our

conservatories. Likewise if we are lucky enough to see warm sunshine then sitting in our conservatories is nigh on impossible due to the severe heat and harsh glare. It has been a perennial problem, but is one that happily we can now solve. We can offer a number of different ways to enable you to use your conservatory 365 days of the year and the most popular and efficient are either a ThermoSave insulated conservatory ceiling or an equinox® tiled conservatory roof. Both can release the space your conservatory offers by making the temperature more ambient all year round. A ThermoSave insulated
conservatory from losing heat during the winter while in the summer the sun’s heat is reflected away, keeping it much cooler. Condensation is vastly reduced and often eliminated as is that dreadful glare from the sun. Noise from heavy rain is reduced and so too are energy costs and fade on furniture. For a touch of luxury, an equinox® tiled conservatory roof is fully LABC approved and combines high-quality precision engineering with attractive styling inside and out. With the same benefits as ThermoSave, it adds valuable extra useable living space to your home without the high cost of building an extension. Compatible with all types of conservatory
and low voltage spotlights can be built into the smooth plastered ceiling if desired. Whether you want to use your conservatory every day of the week or only want to use it sometimes, but want it comfortable when you do, a ThermoSave insulated ceiling or an equinox® tiled roof is most certainly the answer.

Why Should I Make a Will?
Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA)
Many of us aren't very good at talking about death, so it's not surprising that over of us risk leaving our nearest and dearest with a lot of hassle and confusion by not making a Will. Most of us, at some time in our lives consider putting their DÎ?DLUV in order, but we never quite manage it and no further action is taken. There are of course the normal excuses of 'we're too busy', or 'I don't plan on dying just yet!'
Other than a Will, an LPA is singularly the most important document that every adult ought to have. Without it, if incapacity strikes you down, your family will have to dealing with the Court of Protection. A body which has been called evil by many people for how its decisions destroy families all under the guise of the Mental Health Act. The expense alone of dealing with the Court of Protection makes the cost of setting up an LPA positively miniscule in comparison. Whether it’s a simple Will, advice on protecting your property from Care Home fees or you have an even more complex issue, Stepping Stone Wills can provide you with the most appropriate solution together with a truly personal service.

Feeling stressed out? Take a walk with a llama by Kate McLelland
According to the advertisement strapline for one of the many llama trekking trips available in the UK today: “You feel calmer when you walk with a llama”. Llamas originally came from South America, where local people have used them as pack animals for hundreds of years. Their specially adapted feet - padded, like a dog’s - together with their friendly natures made them the perfect companion for long treks across the mountainous Andes region. WHAT HAPPENS ON A LLAMA TREK? Although llamas are able to pull carts and carry up to 25% of their body weight, they are not suitable for riding, so your trekking experience will be limited to leading your llama on a halter as you walk along. At ÀUVW JODQFH WKLV PD\ QRW VHHP like much of an ‘experience’, but trekkers report that leading a llama is a surprisingly relaxing and calming experience. A UK llama trek can involve anything from a half-day trip (ending with a cream tea, of course) to a ramble lasting several days. Brenda Stevens, a member of the British Llama Society and owner of the trekking company UK Llamas, offers visitors the opportunity 12
to halter and groom their llama before leading them into the country lanes and footpaths around the village of Mosterton in Dorset. Llamas are usually well-behaved but have been known to pause on their URXWH LI WKH\ ÀQG D SDUWLFXODUO\ tasty hedgerow plant. Brenda explains: “Our llamas enjoy nothing more than exploring the village and helping our neighbours by ‘trimming’ their bushes and trees along the way!” WHAT MAKES LLAMAS SO SPECIAL? Llamas will also stop in the middle of a trekking expedition if they sense the presence of wildlife, helping their human companions spot creatures they might otherwise fail to see on a countryside walk. With their sharp senses and strong protective instincts, they are often used on farms to guard lambs, ducks and chickens from attack by predators. Hardy and undemanding, they are also placed in paddocks to provide companionship for horses and ponies. Perhaps it is this ability to bond with other species that has singled llamas out as ideal travelling companions for humans. In spite of rumours that llamas can spit in spectacular
fashion if angered, this rarely happens. In fact, many UK llama owners have become VR FRQÀGHQW RI WKHLU DQLPDOV· good behaviour that they have started to involve them in animal therapy sessions. Parties and celebrations are another growth area for the ‘llama experience’. James and Suzanne Benson from Nidderdale Llamas even make their animals available for hen parties and weddings. For hen parties the llamas are equipped with pink ‘L’ plates on their tails, while participants can hire sashes to wear as they walk. At weddings, llamas can meet and greet guests and provide a focus for photographs. Suzanne says: “We can arrange for two llamas or one llama and one alpaca to accompany the bride and groom through the ceremony, walk down the aisle, even carry the rings!” Paying to lead an animal on a countryside ramble may seem like a slightly eccentric thing to do, but there’s little doubt that llama trekking is a magical and unforgettable experience for those who take part. To quote one happy customer who reviewed his trekking trip on the TripAdvisor website: “Quite simply one of the BEST days out we have had.”

A Vets Voice By Mark Lainchbury Eddie is a bouncy five year old dog, Heinz 57 with a good dose of spaniel included. His energy knows no bounds and he had been out in the garden enjoying the snow. Eddie is fortunate to have a large garden and recently an abundance of snow ! Due to Eddie's shaking and snowbound feet, he had been spending more time than usual in the utility room until fit for full house roaming. His Mum also dealing with the weather had been having some trouble drying clothes, so the utility room resembled a full stocked laundry. Some things on hangers, some on airing frames, the usual selection of items.
On one of the particularly cold days, Eddie decided , instead of snuggling down on his rug in the utility , he would tug at the cashmere, pull the pants off the airer and surround himself with damp clothes....... Within one hour Eddie had managed to create a veritable jumble sale. Eddie's Mum was not amused. Her annoyance changed to concern when she realised the small black scraps of wool/lycra dotted around the room belonged to her winter tights...... A close eye was then kept on Eddie who appeared subdued and the following day he was brought into the clinic when he refused food .
On investigation by the vet and some radiographs it came to light that a good proportion of the black tights were entangled in his insides. Eddie needed surgery which was attended to sharpish and fortuitous that he had not eaten prior to anaesthetics. Eddie blissfully unaware of his Mums worry, had the offending item removed and awoke in a warm recovery kennel ward. Forty eight hours later, Eddie reappeared at the clinic, healing nicely and sporting his lamp shade collar to keep nibbling teeth away from stitches. A lesson learned for us all : inquisitive dogs and laundry do not a good mix make !

Protect Your Cats and Dogs in the Garden This Spring If you’re enjoying the warmer weather this springtime, and spending more time in the garden with your pet, here are a few tips to keep both cats and dogs safe and well, and avoid any urgent visits to the vet. Seasonal plants Some spring bulbs and plants can be poisonous to dogs and cats. Daffodils, in particular, cause problems if ingested, but other plants such as tulips, hyacinths, crocuses and clematis are also toxic. The Songs of Leonard Cohen Friday 27 April 2018 His wonderful Tower of Songs - stripped back, desolate, naked and sensual. A big year ahead for Newark’s newest neighbourhood Middlebeck, the new community taking shape on the land south of Newark, remains a hive of activity. Bowbridge Green, the first of many open spaces that will characterise the development, is now finished. The new loop road, which forms the outline of the first homes at Middlebeck, is also on the point of completion.
And the groundwork that began in 2017, to create the vital infrastructure and services that will support the entire community, continues to run according to schedule. Look out for more updates on the planning and design of the future phases of Middlebeck both online and in ‘Use Locally’.

Beauty Spring Clean Your Beauty Routine
by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk
,W¡V QRW MXVW KRPHV WKDW EHQHĂ€W IURP a good ol’ spring clean‌ DITCH OLD MAKEUP AND SKINCARE PRODUCTS Most of us are guilty of holding onto favourite cosmetics way longer than we should do. While PDNHXS GRHVQ¡W KDYH D Ă€[HG XVH E\ GDWH DV such, it does start to degrade once it’s been exposed to air and sunlight. If you check the packaging of any skincare or FRVPHWLF SURGXFW \RX¡OO Ă€QG the PAO symbol. This shows the ‘period after opening’ that the product needs to be used within. In most cases, it’s six or 12 months. Products that come into direct contact with your skin, such as a lipstick, or a moisturiser WKDW \RX VFRRS RXW RI WKH MDU ZLWK D Ă€QJHU are particularly virulent breeding grounds for bacteria. So have a good sort through and ditch anything that’s been open longer than its PAO. It’s also worth having a bit of a declutter at the same time. Are you ever going to wear that lurid purple eyeshadow? If you want products that will last longer, check the PAO before you buy. In general, pump action lotions will last longer than those in jars, as the lotion comes into less contact with oxygen and light. CLEAN MAKEUP BRUSHES Makeup brushes and cases can get decidedly grubby, so it’s a good idea to give them a gentle clean on a regular basis. Most cosmetic bags can be washed by hand, using a 28
Use Locally - Issue 17 April 2018 mild detergent. Brushes can be cleaned with face wash, baby shampoo or a mild soap. Soap is probably the easiest. Just swirl the brush gently on wet soap to create ODWKHU XVH \RXU ÀQJHUV WR PDVVDJH WKH EULVWOHV then rinse thoroughly with warm water and leave it to dry. If your old brushes are past the point of revival, the Nellie Make Up Brush Set from Oliver Bonas is worth considering. For £38, you get ÀYH GLIIHUHQW W\SHV RI EUXVKHV DQG D KDQG\ mirror, all housed in a stylish pink case. TRY SOMETHING NEW It’s easy to get stuck in a perfume rut, wearing the same fragrance year after year. Or worse, wearing a fragrance you’ve been given as a gift but aren’t in love with. Fragrance doesn’t have to be expensive. Marks and Spencer’s Island Escape Eau De Toilette is £16 for a 95ml bottle. For £18 you can have the giftset, which includes a full size fragrance and body lotion. Island Escape is a light, citrusy fragrance, with notes of bergamot, pear and rose, mixed with a hint of sea salt, so it’s perfect for spring and summer. SLAP ON THE SPF Ideally, we should protect our skin from the sun every day, rain or shine. The easiest way to take care of your face is by choosing a moisturiser with a high SPF rating. Nspa Expert Daily Rejuvenate Cream has an SPF of 30 and contains active ingredients such as Crocus Chrysanthus Bulb extract, which has been proven to improve the appearance of ageing skin. What’s more, the cream costs just £10 in ASDA. It’s ideal for spring, but come summer you’ll need a sun lotion that you can reapply throughout the day.

Managing Your Stress
Persistent stress can affect our health and even cause serious illness, so we need to know how to reduce stress and its effects. ‘Stress’ can refer to two different but related things: situations or events that put pressure on us; and our reaction to that pressure. Stress can: • Affect your mental health, causing problems such as depression and exacerbating existing mental health issues. • Affect your physical health by preventing proper sleeping or eating, and causing excess cortisol and adrenaline release. This makes you feel unwell and may eventually lead to serious conditions, e.g. heart disease, asthma, stroke, diabetes and some cancers. What Causes Stress? • Major changes or events: bereavement, moving home, Ă€QDQFLDO FULVHV H[DPV redundancy, retirement, job change, marriage, relationship break-up, illness/injury, pregnancy/parenthood. ‘Happy’ events put extra pressure on us not to appear stressed. • Continual pressure: job, health or relationship worries, overwhelming responsibilities. • Feeling out of control and unable to change situations. • Uncertainty, e.g. potential redundancy. • A life that lacks change, purpose or activity. • Clutter and disorganisation, e.g. always running late. Research shows just the sight of clutter causes stress. Your stress threshold may depend on: 30
• Your perception of the situation (affected by your positivity (or lack of it) and past experiences). • Your mental health and emotional resilience. • The support you receive. Symptoms of Stress • Avoiding the stress source. • Irritability, impatience, aggression, restlessness. • Depression or anxiety. • An inability to enjoy yourself/ take an interest. • A sense of dread. • Feeling neglected or tearful. Reducing and Coping with Stress Reducing your responsibilities and using time-management or organisational techniques can help to reduce stress in your life. <RX FDQ ÀQG WLPH PDQDJHPHQW tips at www.nhs.uk/conditions/ stress-anxiety-depression/ time-management-tips/ and www.mind.org.uk/informationsupport/tips-for-everydayliving/stress/dealing-withpressure/, which also has coping VWUDWHJLHV IRU VSHFLÀF SUHVVXUHV such as being a student. Reducing the causes of our stress is important, but sometimes we can’t change stressful situations. However, we can learn to improve how we react to them.
Self-help strategies include: > Complementary therapies Therapies like yoga, meditation, aromatherapy, massage, acupuncture and ecotherapy (time spent in nature) may help you relax. > Lifestyle Changes A healthy diet, regular exercise and adequate sleep help. Spend time with family and friends and talk through your problems. Make time for hobbies and relaxation; downtime isn’t a luxury, but essential for a healthy mind and body. > Changing Your Mind Develop a more positive outlook. And Another Thing... Tom Has a Spring Clean by Tom Hughes @groomsdaybook
“Tom, I can’t move in this bloody garage, when are you going to sort it?” Camper Van Monthly fell limply from my hands as my Dearly Beloved’s command echoed around the house. Time once more to don the gardening gloves and spring into action. Old lamps, decorations and suitcases fell at my feet as Sarah ploughed through twenty years of accumulated detritus. “Look, there’s only one thing for it, you’ll have to go the tip.” “On a Sunday morning? Are you insane?” “Well what else were you planning on doing today?” “I was hoping to take a trip to that camper van place. Sarah re-appeared. “Tom, stop rummaging and get on with it.” “This is your Great Uncle Jack’s picture – it might be worth a few bob. Look at those storm clouds, very ominous, don’t you think?” “That’s not a storm cloud gathered over Mount Fuji, that’s a water stain. Now stop rummaging and throw it out. No, not them! They’re my best table decorations!” With bags of rubbish piled
high in the car, I crawled to WKH FRXQFLO WLS $ERXW ÀIW\ yards from the entrance, I joined a queue of cars waiting their turn. After half an hour of listening to Steve Wright’s Sunday Love Songs we began to move. I was just about to drive through the barrier when a tattooed giant sporting a construction hat and a highvis jacket held up his hand. “And what have we got in there, sir?” “Rugs, suitcases, pillows, pictures, boots, jumpers, paint pots, paint brushes, paint rollers, table decorations, old bottles, old bags, old memories, lost causes, dashed hopes and broken dreams.” “Rugs in the carpet hopper, sir, broken dreams in nonrecyclable.” And with a wave of his hand, I was in. Pausing for a moment to wait for a space, I observed batteries,

“Whoa! What you doing with that?”
That evening, during Silent Witness, I was browsing on my laptop when suddenly I froze.
“Well, this is a tip, this is rubbish. I’m not sure how I can make this any clearer.” “You let me take care of that, sir.” Gently relieving me of Great Uncle Jack’s print, the little man scuttled off, disappearing behind a Portakabin. Back home, Sarah was

Overhaul Your Lawn by Pippa Greenwood

Check over your lawn mower and see to anything that needs sorting. If it’s too much to take on yourself, take it to a reputable outlet for a service as soon as possible – you’ll need it even more in a few ZHHNV¡ WLPH 2QFH LW LV ZRUNLQJ well again, you’ll be surprised at how much quicker and easier each mowing session becomes. In most areas of the country grass will have started to grow quite a bit faster recently and so may need cutting. Make sure that you don’t set the EODGHV WRR ORZ IRU WKH Ă€UVW IHZ cuts, as this will weaken the growth and make it more likely that weeds will start to invade. You can relieve some of the soil compaction to allow air down to the roots, making for better growth and healthier grass. Do this after you’ve mown the lawn. If only small areas are compacted, use a garden fork and drive it into the lawn every 4-6 inches or so, trying to get the tines of the
fork to a depth of 4-6 inches as well. Once the tines are in the soil, gently ease the handle of the fork back and forth to enlarge each hole. You now have some drainage holes. If you mix up some sieved garden soil or loam with horticultural sand (about one part soil/loam to nine parts sand) you can brush this mixture across the lawn and into the holes you’ve made. The result is a drainage system over those compacted areas. If the soil in the garden is quite heavy or contains a lot of clay, the chances are that these last few months will have done a lot of damage and the whole lawn ZLOO EHQHĂ€W IURP DHUDWLQJ )RU an enduring and even more useful effect, buy, borrow or hire a ‘hollow-time aerator’, either as a hand operated one, a machine or a mower attachment. Over-wet conditions can cause roots to die off and will reduce the oxygen in the soil. Worse still, any areas of the lawn that you’ve had to walk on, albeit infrequently, or over which you’ve had to move a wheelbarrow or other fairly weighty bit of equipment, will have become compacted or squashed. It may not be obvious but the air spaces that should be plentiful in the soil will have been dramatically reduced, and the heavier your soil is, the worse the problem is likely to be. So if you want your grass to be as green as it should be and ready for the summer use it’s likely to get, it’s time to get to work now.

BMW X3: Truly Capable by James Baggot
The wheels are spinning, but the BMW isn’t going anywhere. Every revolution of the alloys sinks the new X3 deeper into the huge blood-orange dunes of the Saharan desert. We’ve been tackling one of the toughest off-road routes I’ve ever experienced – from deep, rolling dunes to sharp, rocky trails – and the fact that only now, close to our ÀQDO GHVWLQDWLRQ RQH RI P\ colleagues has managed to half bury a BMW is a testament to the X3’s abilities. Nestled in a lunar landscape, beneath a carpet of stars so bright they look superimposed on the sky, is our camp – a long way from the madness of Marrakesh, where our day began. We set off on our epic drive towards the Atlas Mountains, the roads from the city quickly opening up into out-of-thisworld landscapes. Soon we’re crossing the Tizi n Tichka mountain pass, one mighty hairpin after another. Our X30d – with a new 260bhp, 620Nm engine – is the pick of the range, and on these roads it’s swift and enjoyable. At midday we arrive in Ouarzazate, and the famous Atlas Film Studios, where we 44
drive our BMWs through the gates of the Game of Thrones city set.
Iriki Lane and Erg Chigaga, all stages of the famous Dakar Rally.
By dusk we’ve covered nearly 300 miles and have taken in the stunning Anti Atlas Mountains. We pass through M’Hamid, the last conurbation before the desert, in a dusty convoy of 15 brand new BMWs.
On the edge of the desert, a rear tyre loses pressure but BMW chaperones soon change the wheel and we continue. We’re enjoying the X3’s comfy new interior and smart multimedia system when another tyre bursts. It takes an hour for the BMW support car to arrive, and it looks like we’ll PLVV WKH à LJKW IURP 0DUUDNHVK
Our camp is an hour of offroading away and our X3 drifts and slips its way like a rally car across the challenging terrain, with just the lights of the cars in front illuminating the impenetrable darkness. It’s the blackness that catches out a colleague when approaching the camp, resulting in the BMW being beached in a position that takes seven men and shovels to retrieve it from. The next morning, we’re told today will be tougher than yesterday. Five hours of harsh off-roading will be followed by a dash back across the mountains to the airport. We’re quickly back in the groove, drifting the off-roader around sandy corners and clattering over sharp rocks. As the desert eases, we H[SHULHQFH WKH EDUUHQ à DW GU\ river beds of the Ouef Draa,
And so begins a rush to the airport, but from screeching hairpin bends to blink-andyou’ll-miss-them overtakes, the BMW takes it all in its stride and we arrive with minutes to spare. Sat, perspiring, exhausted but elated on the plane, we smile – we made it. The BMW X3 may have two new tyres, but it’s been returned unscathed and we’re taking off just 25 minutes after arriving at the airport. All credit to BMW. It’s proven it’s a truly capable car, able to transport you and your family on any adventure – and I for one am certainly looking forward to the next one.

As we approach Foum Zguid, on the edge of the desert, our BMW calmly tells us our nearside rear wheel has lost pressure. BMW chaperones soon arrive out of the dust and whip the ruined wheel off, and we once again make our way back on to tarmac – after ÀYH KRXUV RI EXPSLQJ DQG crashing, the X3 feels like it’s riding on a cloud.

An hour later, the support car pulls up but now it’s not the tyre that’s causing frowns, but the time. We have 130 miles to go, back across the challenging Atlas Mountains, and even without hold ups it looks like we’ll miss WKH RQO\ à LJKW RXW RI 0DUUDNHVK that day.
Back in the Anti-Atlas Mountains, we start to make good progress, giving us time to enjoy the X3’s comfy new interior and smart multimedia system. But 100 miles in, we hear a popping and a hiss, and the now all-too familiar warning chime caused by another tyre losing pressure.
So begins a rush to the airport quite unlike any I’ve experienced before. We head off on a three-hour rally stage. From screeching hairpin bends to blink-and-you’ll-miss-them overtakes, the BMW takes it all in its stride.
