Does your child need extra support to achieve their full potential? “I wish I’d done more, sooner”. A frustrated comment from Helen, one of our current Year 11 students as she balances classroom learning, revision at home and intervention sessions with Spotlight and at school. 4 At Spotlight on learning we specialise in Maths and English (both Language and Literature). We support all levels of ability, from Year 7 to year 11 (and A level) helping them to feel better about the pressure of ‘getting the grades’. 4 We work hard to build students’ self-belief; finding the gaps in their learning and working on those specific areas. After taking (very) early retirement last summer from secondary school leadership, Suzanne Wells knew she wanted to create a local after-school support Centre: “We’ve been so busy since we opened in February, and every student who has attended has made significant progress. We combine a relaxed, happy atmosphere with targeted hard work. We are also exam markers, so we know how to make the difference.” “It became obvious to me as a school leader that students benefited from extra personalised support; in small groups after school, to build confidence and significantly improve progress. This then became the stimulus for our Spotlight on learning Centre. ‘Spotlight’ has students from local schools, others travel from further afield. “I enjoy talking with parents, hearing their concerns. We quickly pinpoint students’ needs, using initial assessments to identify where to start - the positive change quickly starts to happen, for parents as well. It’s incredibly rewarding!” Facebook 5 star rating: “Excellent place with excellent teachers. My daughter is having both Maths and English lessons here on a Monday and Thursday. After only a few lessons I can already see an improvement in her work and in her confidence. Would highly recommend.” Monika (Year 11) wrote: Thank you for everything. You have made me laugh when I was down. You have helped me with my confidence and supported me with my exam prep. I got my target level 9 results! Suzanne Wells, (BA (Hons) English, PGCE) is Founder and Lead Teacher of Spotlight on learning; offering English Language and Literature after school support for students aged
11 to 18, with Maths tuition starting next month. 4 So don’t wait, the sooner we meet your child, the sooner we can get started. 4 Ring Suzanne on 07855 392166 for 25% off first 4 sessions with a free initial assessment – just mention you’ve read Use Locally! *Coddington is conveniently located 2 minutes off the A1 near Newark and 5 minutes from junctions for A17/A616/A617/A46.
“Goodbye” and “Good luck” to our GCSE students, it’s been a real pleasure working with you!

For students who need to be pushing to improve their skills and grades now - ready for next year. Karols Korner I hate to be the sensible one!! While we are all basking in this glorious sunshine, please remember sun screen and dogs in hot cars. Is it really the best thing to take your dog out with you in the heat, and definitely DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DOG IN A CAR, in this weather, as the temperature inside a car heats up very quickly, resulting in heat stroke and distress to your dog. Pretty soon we will all be enjoying all the outdoor events of the summer and keep a look out for our Bumper summer Guide in our next issue for all the best places to be and things to do for the whole family! I have been out and about with Wally and Scarlet, and took a lovely picture of Wally at a show, hope you like it! Have a wonderful June!

Bringing you wonderful water
We’re always working hard to keep water flowing to your home. And while water is wonderful, waste water is something we never want you to have to deal with. Flooding can make a real mess of our homes and gardens, causing unwelcome disruption to our lives. That’s why we’re so passionate about stopping it from happening. By 2020, our customers in Newark will benefit from 15 miles of new sewer and water pipes, helping to protect more than 400 homes from sewer
flooding and providing a reliable water supply for many years to come. We wanted to say a big thank you for your continued patience and support as we carry out this essential work. Keep up to date with our progress by visiting www.stw.works All local businesses will be open as usual, so please continue to show your support to the Newark community.

OUT AND ABOUT
Tech tools for wherever you may roam Whether it’s a long walk or an epic adventure, technology can make travelling much easier. It’s amazing how much can be crammed into a small space: for example the Clippa Lady Mini Multi-Tool Hair Clip (£8) combines a bottle opener, scraper, ruler, small screwdriver 1 DQG D QDLO ÀOH LQ D simple pink hair clip. If you fancy something that’s more practical than pretty, the evergreen Leatherman multi-tool and its many imitators crams an astonishing number of tools into something barely larger than a pair RI SOLHUV DQG ZKLOH \RX FDQ¡W JHQHUDOO\ à \ ZLWK them in your carry-on luggage – many multi-tools have various cutting bits that make them potential weapons – they’re very useful things to pack, or to have on a hike or in a caravan. It pays to shop around, though: the top Leatherman models can be ruinously expensive but they’re often heavily discounted, so for example the £149.95 Wave is currently available from several retailers for nearer £100. Much cheaper options are available too. Wearable technology is becoming a big deal in the great outdoors too. Apple’s Series 3 Apple Watch has built-in GPS and is available with its own 4G data connection, albeit only on EE, which enables you to track your route and get directions without having to take your phone out or even bring it with you. And there are now tons of focused GPS watches for sports and for hiking, such as TomTom’s Adventurer GPS watch (£199) RU LI \RX¡UH IHHOLQJ UHDOO\ à XVK *DUPLQ¡V )HQL[ 5 Multisports (£439). Where Apple’s device is a smartwatch that can do GPS, rival devices were designed with GPS as their main priority and 6
are often better bets for serious sports people. TomTom and Garmin are the big names in this market but there are plenty of cheaper options IURP OHVV HVWDEOLVKHG ÀUPV WRR If you’ll be travelling for a while and think your phone battery won’t last, there are several options for topping up its charge. Some phones enable you to swap the batteries (although the most expensive phones, such as iPhones and WKH ODWHVW $QGURLG à DJVKLSV GRQ¡W EXW PRVW ELJ name devices can accept power 3 pack cases that combine a protective case and extra battery in one item. That means much more life between charges, but it does add quite a lot of bulk and weight. Expect to pay around £60 for an established brand such as Mophie’s Juice Pack for the iPhone, and steer clear of noname products on eBay – dodgy EDWWHULHV FDQ JR RQ ÀUH ZLWK KRUULÀF FRQVHTXHQFHV VR LW¡V ZLVH to stick to recognised brands from reputable sellers. Another option is a portable charger. Solar ones aren’t much cop in the UK except on the sunniest days, but pre-charged devices such as Aukey’s excellent Power Bank can be used to charge tablets, phones, handheld games consoles and other small items such as Kindles. Again, they’re often discounted and £20 is the sweet spot for a decent one. You can expect to get more than four full charges for a smartphone or one and a half for a big tablet. 1. multi-tool hair clip 2. Leatherman Wave multitool 3. Mophie Juice Pack battery case 4. Aukey portable charger

Testimonial The contract manager called me five minutes after I called their office and a representative was with me within the hour and left me with a quote for full removal. This was carried out one week later. Two operatives arrived on time, dismantled and removed my garage and they left with no mess and cleaned up really well. The two operatives were very professional and polite and were a credit to the company

How to Save Money on Your Summer Holiday This Year feeding a family. If you’re travelling with a ‘no frills’ airline, taking hand luggage only can also reduce your costs.
The cost of travelling abroad has increased over the last year or so, mainly due to a fall in the value of sterling, but there are still ways you can save money on your summer holiday. Summer Guide

Heckington Show 2018 Saturday 28th & Sunday 29th July The delightfully arrival of summer early in May has been a joy for most. We’ve got outside, lost a few pounds, found our summer wardrobes and allowed thoughts to turn early to Wimbledon, strawberries and cream, barbeques, days at the beach and for many, to thoughts of Heckington Show. For Lincolnshire folk, it’s a source of pride to have created a weekend show where visitors can connect with their rural roots, discover the sounds, sights and taste of an English summer and still chance upon joyful corners of the showground to try or perhaps buy something memorable. The formula is quite well understood – 2018’s show will be the 151st – but there’s also more than a little alchemy taking place to make Heckington so special and to attract growing visitor

numbers. At the heart of this are the people who make it happen – local people, most with a day job but all motivated to put on a great event because they want to. They bring with them their own skills and talents – as you might expect – but commonly they also draw on help from their partners, children and friends (and even their children’s friends) all of which is also freely given to make the weekend the success it has become. It may seem hard to believe but for many it’s not the ring, but the vast grounds that draw them to visit. They are embroidered with trade stands, displays, activities, action, food to eat or take home and enthusiasts sharing passions – many with strong Lincolnshire roots. There will be special activities marking the 100th anniversary of the end
of World War One which include a working replica Tank in our heritage zone. More peaceful pursuits are also available – look out for spinners and weavers, steam sawmilling, cookery demos, a traditional horticulture marquee to name a few. There are also animals; many, varied and mostly peaceful, ranging from Poultry and Rabbits to Ferrets, Owls, Dogs, Sheep, Cattle and those iconic Shire Horses. Join us this year on 28th and 29th July and bring friends and family of all ages. You can buy tickets on arrival or in advance and there’s still time to take part – look on our web site www.heckingtonshow.org.uk where you will find all the information and latest news for this year’s show.

How Safe is Your Suntan? greatly increased risk of skin cancer later in life.
Magazines may often describe people as looking ‘healthy and tanned’, but as the NHS baldly states, “There’s no safe or healthy way to get a tan.” THE PROBLEM WITH SUNTANS However light it is, however slowly you developed it, and whether you got it in your back garden, the Mediterranean or a sunbed, a tan proves your skin has received too much radiation. Around 5% of the UV (ultraviolet) radiation from sunlight is UVB, responsible for sunburn. The other 95% is UVA, responsible for tanning, aging and wrinkling the skin. UVA rays penetrate to the lower epidermis, stimulating melanin production. This brown pigment, which provides your tan, is the skin’s defence mechanism. Your skin has good reason to go into defence mode. While symptoms of skin damage can take 20 years to appear, prolonged UV exposure increases your risk of skin cancer, including its most serious form, malignant melanoma. People frequently exposed to UV rays before 25 years old or who suffered sunburn in childhood have a 22
THE PROBLEM WITH SUNBEDS Sunbeds, sunlamps and tanning booths emit the same harmful UV radiation as the sun, but many give out greater UV doses than the midday tropical sun. You’re also relying on manufacturers and operators to ensure you get a ‘safe’ dose. 7KH 6FLHQWLÀF &RPPLWWHH RQ &RQVXPHU 3URGXFWV VWDWHV the ultraviolet radiation from sunbeds shouldn’t exceed 11 standard erythema doses per hour. and red hair • medicines or creams that make your skin light-sensitive • a medical condition aggravated by sunlight, such as vitiligo • a personal or family history of skin cancer You should also be cautious if you’re pregnant, as your skin may be more sensitive and prone to burning and pigmentation (patches of dark skin). Avoid the sun when it’s strongest (11am -3pm). Never DOORZ \RXUVHOI WR EXUQ &RYHU your skin, wear a hat and wear sunglasses with adequate UVA and UVB protection. UV can damage eyes too, causing conjunctivitis, irritation or even cataracts.
Your risk depends on your skin type, the frequency and length of your sunbed sessions and your age. In the UK, it’s illegal for under-18s to use sunbeds. A review by the International $JHQF\ IRU 5HVHDUFK RQ &DQFHU IRXQG WKDW ÀUVW H[SRVXUH WR sunbeds before 35 years old increases melanoma risk by 75%.
Use sunscreen that’s in date, with at least four-star UVA protection and an SPF of at least 15 (30 or higher if you’re fair-skinned or using it on children).
STAY SAFE The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommends you shouldn’t use UV tanning equipment if you have: • fair, sensitive skin that burns easily or tans poorly • badly sun-damaged skin or a history of sunburn, particularly in childhood • many moles, or many freckles

Home & Interiors Embrace The Great Outdoors
Make the most of summer sunshine by ensuring your garden is a great place to relax and entertain.
Continued from page 30
Every outside space, no matter how large or small, has the potential to become an extra ‘room’, whether you plan to use it for tending plants, entertaining friends or simply relaxing in the sun with some music and a book. And, just as you would do with indoor rooms, it is worth spending time considering how to make your garden both practical and beautiful. Perhaps just a few quick, inexpensive changes will do the trick – or you may wish to push the boat out and consider an entire redesign. /RRN DW WKH ELJJHU SLFWXUH ÀUVW As well as your budget, you’ll need to consider what you really want from your garden. To begin with, sketch a scale plan of the space on graph paper and decide what will go where. Gardening Essential Scent
by Pippa Greenwood Unusually low temperatures can also cause scent levels to drop. So bear this in mind when choosing where to put your perfumed plants.

Life Begins Meditation: marvellous medicine or new age fad? term this can negatively affect mood and memory and in the long term it can lead to more serious health problems.
“I always say I haven’t slept since 1993,â€? declared 67-yearold actor Sherrie Hewson on the reality TV programme, 100 Years Younger in 21 Days, which aired earlier this year. Sherrie was taking part in an experiment conducted for ITV television by Professor Ian Philp, an expert who advises the World Health Organisation on age-related health matters. When her sleep patterns were DQDO\VHG WKH GDWD FRQĂ€UPHG that she woke at regular intervals throughout the night. Although Sherrie’s participation in the TV show involved weeks of healthy eating and exercise, her sleep pattern changed very little during the course of the experiment. She was RQO\ DEOH WR HQMR\ KHU Ă€UVW good night’s sleep after her Ă€UVW VXFFHVVIXO DWWHPSW DW meditation. Sherrie isn’t alone. Twenty two per cent of Britons experience interrupted sleep, often caused by anxiety or depression. In the short 38
Testing times for the older generation While many of us become calmer and happier as we age, others suffer from a toxic cocktail of concerns: from worries about money and health to anxiety about what will happen when they become unable to care for themselves. Statistics released last autumn by the Department for Work and Pensions show that far from enjoying a tranquil retirement, a substantial number of older people continue to work past their state retirement date, with more than one in ten men working beyond the age of 70 and eight per cent of women working beyond that age. Stress and anxiety may begin in the mind, but these mental health issues can cause a range of physical symptoms, including digestive and bowel problems, aches and pains and a rapid heartbeat. If left unchecked in the long term, stress can also lead to depression. A matter of belief? So, can meditation help older
people to beat stress? Part of the problem is meditation’s image as a new age fad rather than a technique that can offer UHDO KHDOWK EHQHĂ€WV 6KHUULH Hewson admitted that she had “never believed in meditationâ€?, and the idea that meditation is linked to religion or spirituality – therefore something you must believe in – makes people reluctant to try it out. However, as medical science reveals more and more about the way the brain functions, it seems there are compelling reasons why you should give meditation a chance. Meditation encourages people to take charge of their own emotions, and over time this has been shown to result in permanent changes to neural pathways in the brain. When the University of Pittsburgh in America carried out research into the effects of meditation, MRI scans revealed that the DP\JGDOD ² WKH EUDLQ¡V œÀJKW RU Ă LJKW¡ FHQWUH OLQNHG WR IHDU and emotion – appeared to shrink over time, while the prefrontal cortex (associated with concentration, awareness and decision-making) became thicker. Improving concentration Meditation aids concentration by encouraging you to turn off unwanted or distracting thoughts. In an observation exercise for meditators and non-meditators designed by Italian neuroscientist

Giuseppe Pagnoni, the PHGLWDWRUV VLJQLĂ€FDQWO\ outperformed in the test results. You can learn to control your thoughts during meditation by taking action when your mind starts to wander. The technique involves simply acknowledging the distraction and turning back to your main focus as soon as possible. Taming your emotions By identifying and controlling anger through meditation you can restore emotional balance. In a recent study published in the journal Consciousness and Cognition, meditators and non-meditators were asked to think about an experience that made them angry. While meditators were almost unaffected when they focused on the experience,
non-meditators’ found their breathing, heart rate and blood pressure increased. However, after just 20 minutes of meditation the non-meditators had a much calmer response to the same thoughts. Reducing stress, inducing sleep In the programme 100 Years Younger in 21 days, Professor Philp suggests that meditation can extend life expectancy by promoting better sleep. Lack of sleep not only leads to accelerated facial ageing, reduced energy and impaired concentration; it can also cause a build-up of beta amyloid (a protein that has been linked to the onset of Alzheimers disease) in the brain. A 2015 study of forty nine middle-aged and older adults who had

Like many older adults, Sherrie Hewson believed that meditation wasn’t for her, but once she understood its effects, she experienced something of a revelation. The practice of meditation won’t suit everyone, but as medical science discovers more and PRUH SRWHQWLDO KHDOWK EHQHÀWV anyone who experiences stress, sleeplessness or negative emotions on a regular basis would be well advised to give it a try. Keeping your dog safe in the water this summer
Swimming is a fun activity for your dog, and one which can EH H[WUHPHO\ EHQHÀFLDO IRU WKHLU overall health. In the heat of summer, however, it comes into its own by cooling them down and helping them to avoid the risk of heat stroke to which dogs are prone. So what should you do to make sure they’re safe in the water, and that swimming is fun rather than frightening?

A Vets Voice By Mark Lainchbury
We are all very aware when embarking on bringing a pet into the household it is not all soft and fluffy. There are certain responsibilities that come along with all the pleasures that an animal can bring. It has been said that some rescue centres are very stringent in their rules and regulations before rehousing any animal , but it is because they are experts in this field and understand the obligations involved. A major factor in pet owner responsibility is cleaning up after the animal ! We have several notices around the village asking politely for people to be mindful of this, to use the special bins provided and to make the pavements a healthier/ cleaner place to walk. The majority of owners are extremely aware of this and can be applauded for always carrying the necessary bags and disposing of them accordingly. However, a week doesn’t go by without staff having to clean the grass verges or pavements of dog mess around the clinic. It’s a sad fact that the minority will absolve themselves of the job, relying on the goodwill of others to sort out the problem. It has also been noted that although some owners collect the mess, tie up the bag but then leave it on the roadside or push the bag into the hedge......another job for the Good Samaritan to deal with. The law regarding non removal of dog mess applies to open air public places and a fixed penalty notice can be authorised resulting in a possible fine of up to £1000. So please be armed with bags when setting off for a walk and dispose of them in a proper fashion, which will hopefully help all of us! Collingham Vet Clinic

History
How We Fell in Love with Perfume cinnamon, cassia and sweet cane, and the ancient Egyptians believed perfume was ‘the sweat of the gods’.
The word perfume is derived from the Latin per fumum, meaning ‘through smoke’. This is possibly because the perfumes of ancient civilisations were often incense-based. Today, true perfumes are a distillation of a certain percentage of oils in alcohol, with eau de toilette and eau de cologne being diluted versions. Although the Romans were well-known to be very fastidious in their toilet habits, perfume very much pre-dates them. 8VHG VLJQLĂ€FDQWO\ DFURVV $VLDQ cultures, it is believed perfume may have originated in Arabia – still sometimes described as ‘the land of perfumes’. The perfume formulas of a female Mesopotamian chemist known as Tapputi-Bellatekalim have been translated from a threethousand-year-old tablet written in ancient cuneiform script. In the ancient world, perfumes were much more than just pleasant smells – they were also revered. The Bible refers to a sacred perfume, only allowed to be used by priests, that was made from myrrh, 44
Ancient Hindu Ayurvedic texts dating back to 3000 BC refer to perfume’s distillation. In India, a variety of fragrances were used in tantric rituals where women would be spiritually anointed with different oils for every part of their body. In 2004, the oldest evidence of perfume was discovered with the remains of a Bronze Age perfume ‘factory’ unearthed in Cyprus. It is thought that 13th century Crusaders brought back perfume from Palestine, and its use was eagerly taken up by Europe’s nobility. The Sun King Louis XIV, who ruled France from 1643-1715, loved perfume so much that his palace became known as ‘the perfume court’. One of his favourite perfumes, used to fragrance his shirts, was called Aqua Angeli (‘water of angels’) and consisted of, amongst other ingredients, nutmeg, cloves, jasmine, RUDQJH Ă RZHUV PXVN DQG DORH wood, all boiled in rose petal water. During this time, France became a force in Europe for the manufacture and supply of Ă€QH SHUIXPHV DQG *UDVVH LQ southern France, renowned for LWV QDWXUDO YDULHW\ RI Ă RZHUV

was a leading supplier. In England, where sanitation was also abysmal and disease rife, perfumes were not only worn; they were also kept inside jewellery and the heads of canes to be inhaled by the wearer for health-giving properties and to ward off illness. As well as essential oils from à RZHUV DQG SODQWV LQJUHGLHQWV for perfume were also derived from animal excretions. Castor was extracted from beavers, musk from male deer and ambergris from the sperm whale. In the 1800s, synthetic fragrances made an appearance, their less expensive ingredients allowing IRU WKH ÀUVW PDVV PDUNHWLQJ of perfumes, thus launching famous companies that are still around today such as Coty and *XHUODLQ Then in 1921, Chanel created her signature scent, Chanel 1R ZLWK WKH KHOS RI *UDVVH parfumier Ernest Beaux who had made perfumes for the Russian royal family. Under her direction, he gave her numbered samples to choose from – the rest is history. Today our love of perfume remains undiminished and fragrances are popular with both men and women. But one thing hasn’t changed in that, even used daily, perfume is still viewed as a gloriously indulgent and luxury item – pure olfactory pleasure in a bottle.
