Finance Money Saving Ideas To Get You Back On Track In 2017 By Ann Haldon so that you can move quickly to secure the best deals.
If you’re searching for ways to save money this year, take a look at some ideas for everyday savings and special treats that won’t break the bank.
You’ll also need to stockpile items if you’re serious about saving money this way, as that’s how the best bargains are obtained. The Money Saving Expert website has its own coupon page, and if you look at Supersavvyme.co.uk you’ll find a range of coupons for Procter and Gamble products.
DISCOUNT WEBSITES Wowcher, Groupon and Living Social are just three websites offering great deals on everything from holidays to online courses. You simply sign up and input your chosen region to get a local or national deal with as much as 50% discount.
AIRBNB Airbnb is a website offering accommodation in privatelyowned residences around the world. It can often be cheaper than staying in ‘traditional’ hotel rooms or hostels, and offers travellers a vast choice of grades and styles to suit every budget.
It’s a great way to save on presents for friends and family members, or treat yourself whilst sticking to a budget.
You can choose to rent an entire property, or stay in one of your host’s rooms - all you need to do is enter the date of travel and where you want to go. Some hosts prefer to find out a little more about their guests before they’ll confirm a ERRNLQJ RWKHUV RIIHU DQ ¶,QVWDQW Book’ facility.
COUPONING You may know couponing as cutting out discount vouchers from the local paper or supermarket magazines. But the practice has taken on a life of its own, with ‘extreme couponing’ hitting the headlines as shoppers save huge amounts on their monthly food bill. Various websites dedicated to couponing tell you where to find the best offers online, but you do need to spend time searching, and be organised 6
Previous guests leave reviews on the website to give you an idea of the quality you’ll experience, and the company operates a secure online payment service. AMAZON PRIME Amazon Prime offers films, TV shows, music, books, and a free one-day delivery service
for eligible Amazon products, all for a single annual payment of £79. You also get unlimited photo storage and discounts on video games. If you have a Kindle, you can borrow one book per month free-of-charge from the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, and also have access to the Kindle First scheme. This allows you to download one of six titles a month for free, or at a reduced price ahead of their official publication date. You can save further by signing up to Prime Early Access, where you’re given the opportunity to purchase ‘Lightening Deals’ 30 minutes before non-Prime members. TRAVEL COSTS AT HOME Fuel Large supermarkets generally offer the cheapest petrol, but you can also find out the cost of fuel at various independent petrol stations local to you using the website Petrolprices. com. You just have to input your location, and a list of petrol stations is returned once you’ve signed up. Car sharing Car sharing is a great way to save money on motoring, whether it’s with work colleagues or via websites such as BlaBlaCar and Liftshare, which allow you to advertise spaces in your car. Train fares You can save money on long train journeys by buying ‘split tickets’, where the journey is divided and you have several

Gadgets They’ll Love Technology treats for the one you love this Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day has been with XV IRU D ORQJ WLPH LW ZDV Ă€UVW associated with courtly love in the 14th century, and by the 18th century it had become very like the Valentine’s Day we celebrate today - lovers ZRXOG VKDUH Ă RZHUV FDUGV DQG confectionery to demonstrate their affection for each other. Today we still do much the same, although the cards are rarely handwritten and the Ă RZHUV PLJKW EH RUGHUHG RQOLQH and delivered by a man in a van, but today’s lovers have another kind of gift to gladly give: gadgets! )LUVW WKLQJV Ă€UVW GRQ¡W PDNH WKH PLVWDNH RI EX\LQJ D ÂśSLQNLĂ€HG¡ version of a supposedly male thing, such as a pink power drill, for the person you love. Drills aren’t romantic no matter what colour they happen to be, or how keen on DIY your partner is. And if you’re thinking of buying your partner a wearable device such as a )LWELW Ă€WQHVV WUDFNHU \RX QHHG to be 100% sure the message you’re sending isn’t going to be interpreted as “you’re lazy!â€? or even worse, “you’re too fat!â€? The best Valentine’s Day gifts are things you can share, such as the excellent Polaroid ZIP mobile printer. At ÂŁ99 it isn’t cheap, but what it delivers is priceless: old-school Polaroids 8
from your cutting-edge camera phone. There’s something magical about the prints that WRGD\¡V VHOĂ€HV GRQ¡W TXLWH deliver, and it’s a fun way to record your Valentine’s Day celebrations. If your partner is the techy type already, there’s a good chance that he or she already has the technology they want - and that’s an opportunity for you, because there are all kinds of accessories for their most commonly used items, including gorgeous leather cases for phones and tablets, luxury bands for smartwatches and all kinds of cases and protectors. Just watch out if you’re buying leather, as many cheaper accessories use ‘bonded leather’, which is more like vinyl. Real leather looks, smells and ages better than manmade bonded leather does. There are plenty of electronic accessories too. If your loved one is a music fan, the headphones that came with his or her phone probably aren’t up to much - so even a relatively inexpensive pair of headphones can deliver a massive upgrade to the sound TXDOLW\ -XVW ZDWFK RXW LI \RXU partner has an iPhone 7, as that doesn’t have a headphone socket; it does come with an adapter but the best option is to
buy headphones that connect to its Lightning socket instead of a traditional headphone socket. That way if the adapter gets lost, which it will, the music doesn’t have to stop. Another good option for music fans is a Bluetooth speaker, which can take music from any source - iPad, laptop or phone - and play it back for hours between recharges. There’s a dizzying range to choose from, including the superb Denon Envaya Mini (£99), which sounds better than speakers twice the price, and the Sumvision Psyc Monic (£38), which delivers incredible bass response. And if your partner’s something of a water baby, the £9.99 SoundBot HD speaker is designed to work in the shower. It even has hands-free calling via your phone, which strikes us as a really terrible idea, but with a range of 33 feet it means enjoying music without having to worry about expensive electronic devices getting soaked. Who knows, you might even get away with buying the pink one.

Beauty Day To Night Aromatherapy
by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk Whether you need an uplifting boost to get you going in the morning, or some help to drop off at night, essential oils could be just what you’re looking for. Lavender and vetiver are good choices if you want to get a better night’s sleep. Frankincense, rose and chamomile can help you to relax and de-stress, while geranium, pink grapefruit and sweet orange are great for lifting your mood and energy levels. Add a few drops of essential oil to an oil burner, sprinkle some in the bath, or treat yourself to one of these… If you’re a habitual hitter of the snooze button and struggle to get going in the morning, you might want to try Green People’s Quinoa & Calendula Shower Gel and Hand & Body Lotion. Ginger and sweet orange are natural mood boosters, and combine to create an appealing, revitalising fragrance. As well as smelling incredible, both shower gel and lotion are very hydrating, so they leave your skin feeling soft, smooth and utterly pampered. From £14.95, www.greenpeople.co.uk. Eating Disorders Awareness Week - 27th February to 5th March
Eating disorders affect over 725,000 men and women in the UK and claim more lives than any other mental illness. $ VKRFNLQJ RQH LQ ÀYH RI WKRVH most seriously affected die prematurely, either from the physical consequences of their disorder or suicide. That’s why Eating Disorders Awareness Week, which runs from 27th February to 5th March, is so vital. It’s essential we are all aware of the dangers of eating disorders and realise that we are all susceptible to them. That means we need to know the facts – not just the stereotypes. CHALLENGING THE STEREOTYPE: WHO SUFFERS FROM EATING DISORDERS? The stereotype is a teenage girl obsessed with becoming thinner, either starving herself or alternately binge eating and vomiting. However, in reality there are several different eating disorders and while young women are more prone to them, they can affect people of any age, gender or ethnicity. WHAT CAUSES EATING DISORDERS? Often a combination of genetic, psychological, environmental, social and biological factors seems responsible, although

or emptying their bowels by using laxatives). Bulimia is around two to three times more common than anorexia nervosa, and 90% of sufferers are female. It usually develops at around 18 or 19.
TYPES OF EATING DISORDER Anorexia Nervosa Anorexia sufferers are preoccupied with keeping their weight as low as possible by excessive exercise and/or starving themselves.
DIAGNOSING EATING DISORDERS Doctors and healthcare professionals use internationally agreed criteria to diagnose eating disorders, normally using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) or ,QWHUQDWLRQDO &ODVVLĂ€FDWLRQ RI Diseases (ICD). They will ask patients about their weight, self-image and relationship with food.
Around 1 in 250 women and 1 in 2,000 men will experience anorexia nervosa at some point. Although people usually develop the condition at around 16 or 17, it can occur as early as 7 years old. In younger children, it’s more prevalent in boys. Bulimia Bulimia sufferers alternate between binge eating and then purging (emptying their stomach by inducing vomiting
Binge eating disorder (BED) BED sufferers feel compelled to eat large amounts of food very rapidly. It affects both sexes equally and usually develops between the ages of 30 and %HFDXVH LW¡V GLIÀFXOW WR GHÀQH ELQJH HDWLQJ LW¡V KDUG WR assess sufferer numbers, but it’s estimated to affect around 5% of adults. Some people, particularly younger sufferers, may have some, but not all, of the V\PSWRPV RI D VSHFLĂ€F HDWLQJ disorder and will be given an EDNOS diagnosis.
But how do you know when someone needs to be referred for diagnosis? Warning Signs Often, people with an eating disorder will be in denial or try to hide their symptoms, but watch for them:

• Skipping meals or claiming they’ve already eaten, or plan to eat when they’re out. • Only eating tiny or very lowcalorie meals. • Believing they’re fat when they’re a healthy weight or underweight. • Repeatedly weighing themselves or studying themselves in the mirror. • Cooking large meals for others yet eating little themselves. • Refusing to eat in public or becoming stressed when they do. • Using ‘pro-anorexia’ websites. If you suspect you or someone else you know may be developing eating disorder, it’s important to get professional help immediately. TREATMENT OF EATING DISORDERS Rapid treatment increases the chance of a full recovery
and minimises the impact on the patient’s body, life, relationships, job or education. +RZHYHU ÀQGLQJ WKH ULJKW treatment can take some time. They may be suffering from more than one eating disorder, and symptoms may change while they’re recovering. A desire to overcome the condition and the support of those around them are vital. Their physical health will be monitored while the underlying causes of their disorder are treated. This may involve: • Using self-help manuals and books, possibly under the guidance of a healthcare professional. • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), aiming to change their thinking and in turn, their behaviour. • Interpersonal psychotherapy: a talking therapy that focuses on relationship issues.

Bergen Norway By Solange Hando
Nestling between the seven mountains and a sprinkling of islands in the North Sea, Norway’s second city is one of the prettiest towns on the southwest coast. Bright, colourful, it shines whatever the weather, old and new jostling side by side, just steps away from the scenic wonders of a pristine natural world. Laced with inlets and bays, Bergen is the gateway to the fjords, the perfect base to catch a glimpse of this enticing world, maybe sailing for a few hours on Sognefjord, the longest and deepest, or Osterfjord encircling an island where myriad waterfalls tumble down the cliffs. It’s sheer magic, a hidden paradise which lingers in your mind long after you return to harbour. Highly rated by cruise ships and yachts, Bergen’s maritime vocation dates back to medieval times, enjoying its golden age from the 14th century onwards when the Hanseatic League brought trade and prosperity. 7RGD\ WKH ÀQHO\ UHVWRUHG merchants’ houses are the city’s most iconic image, their wooden façades painted in vibrant colours, rising gable to gable along the old Bryggen wharf. It’s a world heritage site 20
and the most atmospheric part of town, with wooden alleyways festooned in rickety steps and overhanging galleries and craft shops tucked in every corner. Just minutes away at the water’s edge, stalls tempt visitors with succulent summer berries and reindeer sausages half a metre long, while the ÀVK PDUNHW VHUYHV VLPSOH but delicious meals under the awnings. When the sun shines on a long summer’s day, restaurants spill out onto the cobbled quay and it feels almost Mediterranean. It’s easy to stroll around Bergen from the medieval fortress to the gleaming high street, from the tip of the peninsula to the esplanade leading down to the lake. Sculptures and fountains pop up here and there and sometimes the sound of violins drifts under the arcades, remembering the local virtuoso Ole Bull, or it could be the haunting echo of a Grieg melody. Both artists were born in Bergen. Meanwhile, in the elegant district above the old town, white weatherboard houses climb up the slopes along the steep meandering lanes or gather higgledy-piggledy in secluded courtyards. Roses
bloom in cottage gardens and the higher you go, the better the views. Now and then the funicular railway makes its way up the mountain where you look across the city and fjords to the islands in the distance. Up there, rambling trails head through forests and heathland dotted with lakes, rocks and cliffs rise above the treeline and when you reach the top of Rundemanen at 568 metres, mountains roll as far as you can see. In these highlands haunted by mysterious trolls, you could encounter a wolverine, a lynx or a bear but visitors who come to see the city lights do not stray far after dark. But according to a local saying, ‘you haven’t been to Bergen if you haven’t been to Ulriken,’ at 643 metres the highest of the seven mountains. As visitors step out of the cable car, many linger on the viewing platform, overwhelmed by the panorama and the cool mountain air, but when the last shreds of mist melt away, the more adventurous head for the summit strewn with boulders and rocks. There are bogs and ponds, wild rabbits, mossy grass, but in this wild open land the mountains are as stunning as the city glistening far below, garlanded in fjords and islands.

And Another Thing... Tom and the Business Opportunity by Tom Hughes @groomsdaybook
Sarah was tidying up in the lounge when she chanced upon my newly purchased motoring publication. “Ferrari Owner? Tom? Have we won the lottery?â€? I entered carrying a cardboard box. “Not yet dear, but soon we will be rolling in it!â€? “Tom, what are all these boxes doing in the hall? And why have you got a funny look in your eye?â€? “I’m excited, that’s all. In these boxes is our future‌ our fortune.â€? Unimpressed, Sarah ran a knife down the packing tape and opened up the carton. “Why have you got boxes of coffee and tea? Don’t tell me you’re opening a cafe because the hours are a killer and‌â€? “Don’t be silly. And this isn’t just any old coffee or tea, darling, this stuff is special coffee - it’s the elixir of life. It
lowers cholesterol, promotes good health and generally makes you feel fantastic!â€? “Well that’s very nice, darling, but why have you bought so much? This lot will last us a lifetime.â€? Then the full horror hit her. She plonked herself down on one of the boxes and put her head in her hands. “Tom, Ă€UVW LW ZDV ZDWHU Ă€OWHUV WKHQ it was perfume, then it was vacuum cleaners, then it was those buy-to-let seminars. Do you remember them? If I hadn’t stopped you we’d be homeless by now.â€? My sheepish grin gave it away. Sarah strode into the kitchen and after a hefty shove managed to squeeze into the garage. “Tom, you can’t move in here.â€? It was obvious that Sarah viewed my shrewd investment as just another one of my hair-brained
schemes. I felt that she deserved an explanation. “Sarah darling, this is a new way of doing business. This is Multi-Level Marketing. “So you’ve signed up for yet another pyramid scheme. Before I could protest there was a knock on the door. “Hi Uncle Billy, what brings you here? asked Sarah. “Tom said there was a meeting tonight? A business opportunity? I could do with a few extra quid on top of my pension. And so could cousin Arthur. And so, before you could say Bentley Continental, our front lounge was full to the brim with relatives, neighbours and, bizarrely, the man who had arrived to read the gas meter. Flip chart in place, there was hushed chatter as I nervously paced the 80% wool twist. Then disaster - Sarah entered with a tray full of steaming hot PG Tips. Incensed, I shooed her back

into the kitchen.
you get your own royalties!”
“Are you insane woman? Now pour that away and open a box of my product. Then wait until the end of the presentation when they can all have a taste.” Had she never seen Dragon’s Den?
A voice from the back (Mr Green from number 11) piped up, “So it’s a pyramid selling scheme?”
Then it was time to present my pitch to my potential distributors. Carefully, I explained that once they became one of my downline, I would earn a royalty from each bag of tea they sold. Realising from the look on Uncle Billy’s face that my future wealth was not the main motivation for him being there, I skilfully changed tack.
“Well I’m not convinced, and while you’re at it, any chance I can have my hedge clippers back?”
“And of course, if you recruit your own distributors, then
“No, it’s a business opportunity,” I beamed.
