October already? Where has 2019 gone? And just this weekend I have put on my fleeces again, feeling the chill! This month we have a fantastic article about being Vegan, a choice that is becoming more and more popular and one we need to support, plus our regular features and competitions. Time to start thinking about where you may have Christmas as well! Going out for Christmas or staying home, make sure to think could a vegan Christmas be the way forward this year? News from the show scene? – last weekend my lovely red poodle girl Flame became an Irish Champion, my first Champion in Ireland so celebrations all round! We have been rushing round Europe doing as many shows as possible pending Brexit and the possible difficulties in showing in Europe, so Wally & Scarlet have become Belgian Champions, International Champions and Flame a Belgian Junior Champion. A couple more shows to cram in before the Oct 31st deadline and fingers crossed we get those last couple of titles before European showing becomes so difficult that we have to stop! Here’s Flame proudly showing off her final Green Star! Have a great October

Is early repayment right for your mortgage? If you have money left over at the end of each month, or have received an unexpected lump sum, you may be thinking about paying off your mortgage early. You can save large amounts in interest and potentially cut your mortgage term by years but, depending on your circumstances, it might not be the best option.

So what factors do you need to consider before deciding whether to clear your mortgage early? Here are a few questions to get you thinking.
It could be more beneficial to pay more into your pension
Does your mortgage allow for overpayments? Not all mortgage products let you overpay and some will charge you for doing so, but many allow borrowers to overpay up to 10% of the outstanding mortgage with no penalties. If you’re not sure about the terms and conditions of your mortgage, get in touch with your lender or check the original documentation. Are you enrolled in any pension schemes? If you’re currently paying into a pension scheme it could be 10

Paying off more expensive debt such as credit card and store card balances, and unsecured loans, is always a good idea if you have residual income, and should be prioritised over paying extra sums to your mortgage. Once this type of debt is paid off you’ll automatically increase the amount of money you have available each month and can then consider overpaying your mortgage, which is a lower cost debt. Do you need extra life insurance? You probably had to take out a life insurance policy to cover your mortgage loan, but it might only cover death rather than illness or disability. It’s a good idea to review your insurance needs from time to time to ensure various possibilities are covered. You may want to increase the amount on a particular policy, for example, RU FKDQJH IURP D ž[HG SHULRG that covers your mortgage term to a ‘whole-of-life’ policy where the timing of a payout isn’t restricted. Do you have an emergency fund? If you lost your job, could you pay the bills for at least six months? If not, it would be worthwhile building an emergency fund with your residual income rather than paying down the mortgage. The UK’s biggest vintage tractor show Over a century of farm machinery is to be displayed at the UK’s biggest vintage tractor and heritage show. 17th NEWARK VINTAGE TRACTOR AND HERITAGE SHOW On 9 & 10 November, Newark Showground will once again be holding the largest show of its kind in the UK. This familyfriendly annual autumn event will feature hundreds of vintage agricultural and horticultural machines as well as plenty of trade stands, demonstrations and displays. The feature tractor themes for 2019 are; International Harvester, CASE and David Brown (pre 1796). You’ll also see original condition vintage machines, the UK’s premier restorations, static and working stationary engines, commercial vehicles and horticultural equipment! This year’s event will see more tractors than ever before, with the event having expanded into the John Eastwood Buildings to accommodate the growing show. The Show strives to include as many vintage vehicle varieties as possible and collectors proudly bring along lovingly restored fire engines, commercial vans and lorries, military jeeps and carriers. Collections of vintage machines will be on display inside and outdoors on Newark Showground and visitors are encouraged to bring their
questions to the expert enthusiasts, located on the various tractor club stands. For the non-tractor enthusiasts in your family, there is still plenty to see and do, with displays of traditional crafts such as spinning, stick-making and chair caning as well as numerous indoor and outdoor trade stands offering opportunities to shop for products from country wear clothing, gifts, footwear, original paintings and prints, to sweet and savoury snacks, as well as items that will appeal to agricultural machinery enthusiasts. Children will be pleased to visit Father Christmas in his ‘igloo’ where he will attentively listen to ‘what they want for
Christmas’. Tasty hot meals, drinks, cold snacks and ice-cream will be available at various outlets and a sit-down meal will be available in the Cedric Ford, lovingly cooked and served by Newark Showground’s on-site catering team, Tastes. Don’t miss the annual Remembrance Sunday Service, held amongst the vintage tractors displayed in the George Stephenson Exhibition Hall, which is supported by Southwell Minster and this year will be commemorating D-Day. The service is and is always well attended, and the poignant sound of the lone bugler John Baigent signalling the two minutes’ silence to remember those lost at war is particularly evocative.
Newark Showground is located near the A1/A46/A17 roundabout just outside Newark so it’s easy to get to and parking is FREE Further details can be found by visiting www.newarkvintagetractorshow.com closer to the dates. If you are interested in sponsoring any aspect of this year’s show, please contact the show team, please visit www.newarkvintagetractorshow.com/sponsorship for further details. Everything Everyone Needs to Know about the Menopause Since menopause affects roughly half the population, it’s important for men to understand it as well as women, because it will affect their families, friends and colleagues. What is the menopause? Menopause occurs when a woman’s periods have stopped for a year, caused by reduced oestrogen and cessation of egg release. In the UK, most women reach menopause between 45 and 55. However, perimenopause – the premenopause phase when oestrogen levels decline – can last for months or years, as can symptoms (which may persist after periods stop). In general, it is best to go as big as possible, so that all the furniture (or at least its front legs) can sit on the rug. • As with carpet, ensure your choice of rug is appropriate to the room. In an entrance hall, for example, a tough and durable rug will be best – perhaps sisal or seagrass or, alternatively, a dark-coloured cotton ÂżDWZHDYH WKDW FDQ EH SXW WKURXJK WKH ZDVKLQJ machine. Wool rugs can be used more or less anywhere, while delicate fabrics such as silk are best left for seldom-used rooms. • Got a pattern that you would like to see on a rug? LEO
March 21st - April 20th
24th - August 23rd
You'll be coming into your own on the 13th, thanks to an empowering Full Moon. Take this opportunity to command the spotlight. Promote your agenda, challenge rivals and satisfy your urges. In the past, people have accused you of being selfish, implying this was a character flaw. That's not the case in mid-October, when you've earned the right to satisfy your needs.
TAURUS April 21st - May 21st Hidden information will come to light on the 13th, due to a revelatory Full Moon. Now that you understand a loved one's past, it will be easier to achieve intimacy. Do your best to ease their fears and encourage their dreams. The New Moon on the 28th will pave the way to a partnership. This alliance won't be entirely easy. It will be difficult to satisfy your unusual tastes and sensibilities.
Taking an ethical stance will be rewarded on the 13th, thanks to a satisfying Full Moon. You may prevail in a legal matter or vanquish an immoral enemy. Give yourself a reward for putting personal interest aside for the sake of principle. The New Moon on the 28th will mark a professional opportunity that shakes up your domestic life. This job will require you to move far from home.
VIRGO August 24th - Sept 23rd On the 13th, an enriching Full Moon will put more money in your bank account. An inheritance, refund or settlement will allow you to make some extensive home improvements. If you've always wanted to buy your own place, you'll be finally able to do so. A course of study could be overwhelming on the 28th, thanks to a tense New Moon.
SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - Dec 21st After a long period of drudgery, you'll be able to relax and have some fun on the 13th. That's when an uplifting Full Moon invites you to come out and play. If you've been yearning for romance, you'll find it with a wild rebel. The two of you share a love of adventure; lots of far-flung trips are in the cards for you both.
CAPRICORN December 22nd - Jan 20th Home, family and real estate command your attention on the 13th. That's when a stimulating Full Moon draws your attention to domestic life. On the 28th, the New Moon pushes you into an unfamiliar environment. You'll feel like a fish out of water in this group. Fight your instinct to flee the scene. It's much better to stay and make new friends.

The Full Moon on the 13th is an ideal time to attend a social gathering. If you're single, you will meet someone who makes your pulse pound. Throw caution to the wind and get romantically involved; you won't be sorry. If you're already in a serious relationship, your amour will enjoy showing you off. On the 28th, the New Moon will mark a difficult work assignment.
CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd The Full Moon on the 13th trains the spotlight firmly on you. You'll enjoy showcasing your talent and working before the public. Instead of trying to blend in with the crowd, emphasise your differences. This will allow you to land the creative assignments you enjoy. On the 28th, the New Moon could mark the beginning of a passionate romance.
The Full Moon on the 13th is a great time to strike a compromise with your best friend, romantic partner or business associate. Instead of clinging stubbornly to a particular point, be willing to negotiate. You can back down from your position without losing respect. If you've been collaborating on an original project, you'll bring this work to its satisfying conclusion.
SCORPIO October 24th - Nov 22nd You'll see the results of a health regimen on the 13th, thanks to a gratifying Full Moon. If you've been working on a cutting-edge project, you'll bring it to a successful conclusion in midOctober.
The Full Moon on the 13th invites you to clear your desk and finish tasks. The middle of the month is the ideal time to process paperwork, tackle correspondence and pay bills. Fill the pantry, clean the bathroom and clear out clutter. These tasks will be time consuming but satisfying. Signing official paperwork will be especially fortunate for you at this time.
PISCES Feb 20th - March 20th Don't hesitate to ask for what is rightfully yours on the 13th, when the Full Moon sheds lights on your material needs. Demand payment for services rendered, ask for a loan to be repaid or indulge in a luxury purchase. The New Moon on the 28th invites you to expand your horizons. The thought of earning an advanced degree is daunting.

concrete left after you’ve done a bit of large-scale DIY, the end result will look like a rubble pile with plants! There are local and mail-order suppliers who will have just the sort of material that will look great.
The Rock Garden Is Alive‌ If you have ever dreamed of Sound of Music landscapes, then why not get on and create your own? Maybe there’s not room for an entire mountain range in your garden, but there may well be space for your very own rock garden. So what do you need to do? You’ll need to choose a fairly sunny spot, ideally away from overhanging deciduous trees – most alpine plants like a fair bit of light and detest becoming clogged up with deteriorating leaves.

Old chunks of concrete will just look like a rubble pile with plants! Get yourself a good selection of rock. However tempting it might be to recycle the chunks of
Use upturned turves on top of the mound, laid grassy side down to stop all the soil to be placed upon it from slipping down amongst the rocks. You need a layer of sandy soil, to a depth of about 30cm (12in), over the top of the turves. Using string and pegs mark out where you want to create each outcrop of rock – if you just stud your mound of soil with randomly inserted bits of rock it’ll end up looking like a pudding, not a rock garden! Even if space is limited – and it always seems to be – make the rock garden on as large a scale as possible; it’ll have far more impact and planting opportunities, and more of a realistic feel. If possible include some gullies running down
the rock garden, perhaps ending in a pond or pool. This means you will need to arrange the rocks so that water can trickle or run down between them or over their surfaces. Where the water runs over rock there will be no need to install a special surface, but beneath rocks you can use guttering or drainage pipes, making sure that they are hidden either by soil or rock outcrops.
You can use a pile of rubble or broken bricks to create the classic mound shape, as this will be hidden later by the goodlooking rocks. The rubble pile should also ensure that drainage remains good for the plants later on, as alpines typically hate being too wet.

Health Check Your Cat Although your cat needs a check-up with the vet once a year, you can also carry out your own health check at home. Here are some of the main areas to keep an eye on so your feline friend stays as healthy as possible through the year. Skin and coat Check for any lesions or scaling as this could indicate a skin condition or infestation of ¿HDV PLWHV 7KHLU FRDW VKRXOG EH VKLQ\ DQG glossy with no bald patches or dandruff – cats typically shed in autumn as well as springtime, so it’s a good idea to groom them regularly.
Ears Although you shouldn’t examine too far inside your cat’s ears, you can look for any dirt, redness, or other signs that they might be infected. If your cat shakes its head or holds it to one side, they could have an ear problem and your vet will be able to examine them more closely. Eyes Eye health issues are generally easier to spot, as redness or soreness becomes fairly obvious. Your cat may rub their eyes to relieve itchiness, or squint to avoid the light and ease soreness. Mouth Good dental hygiene is important for cat health and you may already brush your cat’s teeth regularly. If you notice they have bad EUHDWK RU UHG VZROOHQ JXPV RU DUH VDOLYDWLQJ more than normal, it’s advisable to take them to the vet as they could have tooth decay, gum disease or a digestive problem. www.purina.co.uk/cats/health-and-nutrition/ grooming-and-daily-care/general-cat-healthtips By Ann Haldon
