Karols Korner Brisk Autumn walks in the countryside, with frost on the grass and a crispness in the air ..... Is this your idea of heaven? Or have you been a sun lover and enjoyed every minute of our hottest summer on record? Showing has been a grueling month, with the Split Summer shows held over 4 nights in Split! ( yes we drove there!) and then the World Dog Show in Amsterdam, but we have great news! Wally has been awarded the Reserve Challenge Certificate at East Of England show in July, the first red miniature poodle in UK to win this high! Thrilled is an understatement! He also gained the Croatian Champion title and International Champion title, neither of which can be claimed as yet due to his age. And now for some well deserved rest and recreation, maybe a trip to the beach before the weather breaks and those colder days start beckoning and log fires suddenly seem enticing again! Have a great September!

This was carried out one week later. Two operatives arrived on time, dismantled and removed my garage and they left with no mess and cleaned up really well. March 21st - April 20th

24th - August 23rd

November 23rd - Dec 21st

Beware of taking up an extreme health regime on the 9th. That's when a confusing New Moon will cloud your judgement. If you want to revise your diet or increase physical activity, talk to a doctor. The Full Moon on the 25th will tempt you to enjoy some down time, but work won't permit this. You'll have to cancel plans to accommodate a demanding boss.

A moneymaking offer on the 9th will not be all it is cracked up to be. That's when a deceptive New Moon will tempt you into taking a seemingly cushy job. Once you accept this position, you'll be dismayed to learn you have been duped. The Full Moon on the 25th will make it hard for you to spread your wings and fly. You may fail a test or fall short of graduation requirements.

The New Moon on the 9th marks a professional opportunity. Look before you leap. The terms of this deal are extremely murky. You might be told you can work from home, only to discover you'll be expected to spend all your time in the corporate office. On the 25th, the Full Moon will bring some disappointing news. An emotional or financial gamble will backfire.

TAURUS

VIRGO

CAPRICORN

April 21st - May 21st

August 24th - Sept 23rd

December 22nd - Jan 20th

The New Moon on the 9th will make you impulsive. Beware of rushing a romantic relationship. Diving head first into a commitment will be cause for serious regret. You're dealing with someone who has a hidden side that is quite upsetting. On the 25th, the Full Moon will bring an embarrassing secret to light. You may discover someone has been cheating you out of a joint fund.

Your self-confidence will be undermined by a confusing New Moon on the 9th. No matter how clearly you try to communicate your points, the audience will fail to understand them. Don't get upset. Take deep breaths and try another approach. On the 25th, the Full Moon will create a rift in a close relationship.

The terms of a legal deal will be extremely unfair. It may be necessary to hire a lawyer to protect your interests. Even then, the New Moon on the 9th will make it difficult to get justice. It may be best to settle and walk away from an exhausting fight. The Full Moon on the 25th creates drama on the home front.

September 24th - Oct 23rd

January 21st - Feb 19th

Finding a place to live will be challenging during the first half of September. You may feel pressured to sign a lease or make a deposit on the 9th, due to a deceptive New Moon. Do not move forward on this deal until you have the property inspected by someone that you hire. The Full Moon on the 25th will send shock waves through your social circle.

A rival will take credit for your hard work in early September. Don't let the deceptive New Moon on the 9th cause you to let down your guard. If you submit work, do it to several people via email. That way, people will know when it was submitted and who generated it. The Full Moon on the 25th will cause you to question a close partnership.

CANCER

SCORPIO

June 22nd - July 23rd

October 24th - Nov 22nd

The New Moon on the 9th will cause some wires to get crossed. If you're giving a set of confusing instructions, ask for clarification. Double check an address before entering it into your GPS. Before setting for an appointment, make sure it is the right date. On the 25th, the Full Moon will create stress on the professional front.

On the 9th, you'll meet some interesting people at a party or professional conference. It's best to maintain an air of formality with these people in the early stages. One or two of the individuals you meet will have shady characters. The Full Moon on the 25th brings the end to a demanding work assignment. It will be such a relief to get this project off your desk.

An intimate relationship gets off to a rocky start in early September. The New Moon on the 9th causes people to be distrustful, elusive and deceptive. If you catch someone near and dear to you in a lie, it's a red flag. On the 25th, the Full Moon brings upsetting information to light. Decisions will be taken affecting your world of work.

PISCES Feb 20th - March 20th A close relationship will show signs of strain on or around the 9th. That's when a deceptive New Moon will cause you to jump to conclusions about your best friend, romantic partner or business associate. The Full Moon on the 25th brings a financial disappointment. How to Save and Make Money at University

One of the trickiest but most important parts of university life is managing your money. Budgeting for food, clothes, nights out, books and study materials can be overwhelming at first, but there are ways you can help yourself. Here are a few tips to help you spend less, save more, and earn money at university, so you can stop worrying about finances and make the most of this precious time in your life. WAYS TO SAVE MONEY AT UNIVERSITY Make use of technology All you need is your mobile phone to save money as a university student. There are apps to help you save on food, that show you how to budget, and that keep an eye on your data usage. Keep your food costs down by making a list of your favourite ingredients, and an app will let you know the cheapest places to buy them locally. You can also track your expenses with a budgeting app. Just type in how much you 10

spend each day, and what you’ve bought – at the end of the month, a report gives you a roundup of where your money is going, so you can adjust your spending if necessary. Learn how to cook Learning how to cook from scratch is a valuable skill for life, but as food is one of the highest student expenditures, it’s also a vital part of saving money. Apart from the extra cash in your pocket, you can still be sociable without the expense of eating out, impressing your friends with a few gastronomic delights. It’s a good idea to plan your meals ahead and only buy what you need each week, avoiding ready meals if possible, as although they’re convenient, they’re generally bad for your health. Also, stick to buying own-brand products that can usually be found on the lower shelves in supermarkets, where you might not normally look. Vouchers and coupons It’s surprising how much you can save by using vouchers and coupons, but you do need to be organised and be ready to snap them up online. You may be able to save even more as a university student, as stores often offer additional student

discounts on certain items. Save by standing order Once you’re used to budgeting, and know how much you’re likely to spend each month, it’s worthwhile transferring a minimum amount to a savings account via monthly standing order. Even small amounts add up over the course of a year, and you can always save more money if you have any spare. WAYS TO MAKE MONEY AT UNIVERSITY Get a part-time job The obvious way to make money at university for most students is to get a job parttime. Retail, catering, and hospitality are just three areas where you could pick up a part-time job with fixed hours that fits in with your studies. Although you may need to forsake some evenings and weekends, payday could make it worthwhile to miss out on a few social occasions. Another idea for part-time work, and one that’s a little more flexible, is mystery shopping. You sign up with a mystery shopping agency, or directly with an independent company, and get paid for checking the level of service provided in their outlets. You’ll need to ask certain questions in-store, and then write up and submit a report online within a certain deadline. You may also be asked to mystery shop by phone or email.

Use Locally - Issue 22 September 2018 Online work With so many online moneymaking and work opportunities available, you can earn more than just ‘pocket money.’ Taking surveys is a great way to do this, with Swagbucks, Toluna and YouGov being just a few sites offering money and vouchers for taking part in surveys and questionnaires. You can also sell clothes and unwanted belongings online to make some cash – Shpock and eBay are popular for this, and you also get to de-clutter your student accommodation. Starting a small business The upsurge of the gig economy means you can put your talents to good use by freelancing, or starting your own small business. If you’re good at web design, writing, or

even tutoring other students, there are plenty of opportunities to advertise your skills online or within the university campus. Freelance marketplaces such as People Per Hour and Upwork match freelancers with people or businesses looking for someone to complete a project. By signing up, you can search for jobs in your skill set, and build up a portfolio of work over your time at university. Promotion work and flyers

apply to become an on-campus ‘brand ambassador’ for a household brand name. You might be able to organise your own promotions and events for the brand, and make a name for yourself in marketing.

Handing out flyers around campus and promoting club nights or events on the streets of your university town can earn you some extra money, but be sure to find out whether you’re working on a commission or a ‘per hour’ basis.

Becoming a Foster Carer by Kate Duggan kateduggan.co.uk

Tens of thousands of children enter the care system in the UK every year. If you think you FRXOG KHOS UHDG RQ WR ÀQG RXW more about fostering, including how to go about it and how much you could earn. WHO CAN FOSTER? Foster carers come from a range of backgrounds. You’ll need to: • Be at least 21. • Have the right to live in the UK permanently. • Have a spare bedroom. • Have enough time to look after a child. You don’t need to be in a relationship or own your own home, and you can have a job. You don’t need any TXDOLÀFDWLRQV EXW SUHYLRXV experience with children is EHQHÀFLDO WHAT TYPES OF FOSTERING ARE THERE? There are lots of different types of foster care. Some children only need a shortterm placement. Others need a long-term home. You could even just offer emergency, overnight, weekend or respite care if you prefer. You could also choose to foster a young parent and their child. Both would live with you and you’d help the parent to develop their skills until they were 12

able to care for the child independently. WHAT KIND OF CHILDREN NEED FOSTERING? Children from all backgrounds, and of all abilities and ages, ÀQG WKHPVHOYHV LQ IRVWHU FDUH Many end up returning to their birth families or going on to be adopted. Some children have complex emotional or physical needs. Sometimes, foster carers specialise in a particular age group, whether it’s babies and toddlers, primary school children or teenagers. Some people focus on caring for disabled children or children seeking asylum. Your case worker will talk to you about what type of placement would be best for you. HOW MUCH COULD I EARN? The minimum weekly allowance per foster child starts from £127. Older children have greater allowances, as do children with special needs. So, for example, if you fostered a nine year old and a 15 year old, you’d receive at least £302 for each week you looked after them. That money would need to cover the child’s food, clothes, toys and other expenses. Foster carers are sometimes paid a fee on top of the

allowance. The amount you’ll receive will depend on the foster service you go through, and the needs of the child you foster. Many foster carers earn more than £500 a week for each child they foster. Foster carers get considerable tax relief on the money they earn from fostering. Foster payments also don’t usually have an effect on welfare EHQHÀWV WHAT SUPPORT WOULD I GET? You’d attend training programmes and be matched with your own social worker, who would be there to support you. Some services also have additional support available, such as a 24-hour helpline. HOW DO I APPLY? You can foster through your local council, or through an independent fostering service. The application and assessment process usually takes around six to eight months. WHERE CAN I FIND OUT MORE? For more information about fostering, contact your local council or visit: www.thefosteringnetwork.org. uk www.gov.uk/foster-carers

NEW TERM TECH Get your child’s next computer for less GLVFRXQWV FDQ EH VLJQLÀFDQW

From clothes to computers, the cost of sending your offspring to school, college or university seems to increase every day. So how can you be sure you’re not spending more on technology than you need to? The trick is to get the maximum bang for every buck – and sometimes that means avoiding false economies. A cheap laptop may save you a few pounds now, but it might not be able to cope with everything your child needs it to do; for example, a Chromebook laptop may be ultra-cheap but if your child’s going to be using it instead of a TV its small screen isn’t going to be a lot of fun.

Another option is to consider a refurbished Mac. Refurbished computers are computers that have been sold and then returned. Sometimes that’s because of a fault that has since been corrected or because a customer simply changed their mind; sometimes it’s because the laptop was leased to a company and returned after the lease period is up. Whatever the reason, it can’t be sold as new. That can mean good discounts even on fairly new computers. 1

The sweet spot for budget laptops is around the £300 mark, and if you go much below that you’ll be cutting corners. It’s often a better idea to shop around for a second hand laptop on Gumtree or eBay (if you’re careful: stick to reputable sellers and make sure you follow the buyer protection policy so you’re protected against any shenanigans) – a powerful laptop that’s been well looked after for a year or two may be a better 3 buy than a brand new, super-cheap laptop. That’s particularly true of Apple laptops. The cheapest Apple laptop, the MacBook Air, is currently £949 and isn’t particularly powerful. If you’re FRQVLGHULQJ DQ\ $SSOH GHYLFH WKH ÀUVW thing to do is to investigate whether \RXU FKLOG TXDOLÀHV IRU DQ HGXFDWLRQ discount (www.apple.com/uk-edu/shop/ go/education). It’s important to understand the key differences between new and refurbished computers. They ship without faults but may have damaged or missing packaging, and they may have light cosmetic damage on their case. The warranty is much shorter, and any AppleCare insurance you take out will run out on the DQQLYHUVDU\ RI WKH GDWH WKH 0DF ZDV Ă€UVW VROG not the date you acquired it – so for example you won’t be able to buy AppleCare for a refurbished Mac that’s three years old. For example, at the time of writing a reputable eBay seller is offering a refurbished late 2014 MacBook Pro with 13â€? Retina display for ÂŁ650. That’s a lot of money, of course. Health

By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk

Men, Mental Health and Suicide Prevention amongst marginalised groups, e.g. refugees, migrants, prisoners and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people. So how can we help to prevent suicide, both as individuals and a society?

September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds and on the rise worldwide, with nearly 800,000 suicides a year (that’s one every 40 seconds) and around 20 times as many failed attempts. Suicide Risk Factors Men aged 20-29 and 40-49 are most at risk. A clue to why lies in the Movember Foundation’s conclusion that mental health stigmas and men’s reluctance to discuss and seek help for mental health issues are two major reasons why their life expectancy remains lower than women’s. The biggest risk factor for suicide is a previous suicide attempt. Although suicide is often clearly linked to mental disorders and alcohol abuse, many suicides happen impulsively in moments of crisis: a trauma, relationship break-up, ÀQDQFLDO SUREOHPV RU FKURQLF pain and illness that suddenly overwhelms us. &RQà LFW GLVDVWHU YLROHQFH abuse, loss and a sense of isolation are also risk factors and rates are high 22

Suicide Prevention • Tackle discrimination, damaging stereotypes and stigmas. Children raised in an environment where people are ridiculed for expressing their sexual orientation or feelings will be scared to express theirs, putting them at higher risk of isolation, depression and suicide. It can be tough to tackle discrimination among family, friends and colleagues, but it’s essential. We must also break down stigmas by treating mental illness as we do physical illness. • Encourage others (especially men) to express their feelings and seek help with mental health issues, and increase awareness of the dangers of alcohol and its misuse. Suicide is preventable, says The British Psychological 6RFLHW\ ´(DUO\ LGHQWLĂ€FDWLRQ and effective action can get people the care they need.â€? Depression and alcoholrelated disorders must be LGHQWLĂ€HG DQG WUHDWHG VZLIWO\ • Pay closer attention to those around us.

Many suicide victims UHSRUWHGO\ VHHPHG œÀQH¡ MXVW days or even hours before ending their lives. We must look out for warning signs and, on a practical level, remove (as far as possible) the means for attempting suicide from those we fear are at risk. If you are struggling with a crisis or a mental health issue, do get help. It may feel like your pain will never end, but things can get better. In his book Reasons to Stay Alive, depression sufferer and bestselling author Matt Haig reminds us that depression may seem vast, but it’s always smaller than us. “It operates within you; you do not operate within it. It may be a dark cloud passing across the sky, but‌ you are the sky.

“You were there before it. And the cloud can’t exist without the sky, but the sky can exist without the cloud. Useful Info Samaritans: www.samaritans. org call 116 123, open 24/7 every day Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) – for men www.thecalmzone.net 0800 58 58 58 open 5pm midnight every day Matt Haig, Reasons to Stay Alive, Canongate Books. Many people who have suffered depression and/or contemplated suicide credit this book for helping them through crises.

Um, sorry, but why are we Brits so polite? by Kate McLelland

“Err ‌ excuse me, sorry, but ‌ um, I’m afraid you’re standing on my foot.â€? The British have politeness written into their DNA. Nowhere else in the world will \RX Ă€QG SHRSOH VR UHDG\ WR put up with discomfort rather than be considered pushy or rude. We love nothing better than to doggedly suffer in silence if that spares us from having to speak to a stranger, particularly if there’s a chance that the stranger will be offended, or – even worse – might make us feel embarrassed. How did it all start? It’s rather a mystery. The British, as we all know, are a pretty pugnacious lot. We value forthright leaders such as Sir Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher and count the ruthless King Henry VIII and buccaneering sailor Sir Francis Drake amongst the nation’s favourite historical Ă€JXUHV 1RZDGD\V WKH OLNHV RI Jeremy Clarkson, JK Rowling, Boris Johnson and Lily Allen are celebrated for their outspoken views, and yet we average Brits are apparently so fearful of causing offence 38

that we remain tightlipped even when we are subjected to discomfort or inconvenience. If someone is thoughtlessly blocking our way, we say “excuse meâ€? as if it were our fault, and if we receive grudging service in a restaurant, we’ll not only say “thank youâ€?, we’ll probably even leave a tip. Another classic British trait is our talent for understatement. It’s all part of the same cultural mindset that tells us its bad form to make a fuss. This tendency to underplay everything was famously demonstrated during the Korean War, when embattled British soldier Brigadier Tom Brodie of the Gloucester Regiment reported to an $PHULFDQ VXSHULRU RIĂ€FHU General Robert H Soule, with the fatal words: “Things are a bit sticky, sir.â€? What Brigadier Brodie wanted to convey was that his men were vastly outnumbered and facing a terrible defeat; what General Soule assumed was that the Gloucesters were successfully holding the line, even though things were a bit tough. Unsurprisingly, this miscommunication resulted

in huge numbers of British soldiers being killed, wounded and captured. Students who learn English with a view to visiting the UK are warned about our habit of not saying what we mean. A few years ago a “Translation Tableâ€? – which offered to decode our speech habits – was published online and quickly went viral. The table included headings such as “What the British sayâ€?, “What they meanâ€? and “What foreigners understand.â€? So a Brit will say: “That’s very interestingâ€? (meaning “You’re talking nonsenseâ€?) but the unfortunate overseas listener will take it as: “They’re very impressed with my ideaâ€?. Inevitably, British politeness has become a hot topic online. YouTube Vlogger Hannah Trigwell says she Ă€QGV KHUVHOI EHLQJ SROLWH LQ order to make people happy: “At the hairdressers there are times when I’ve thought: ‘What the hell has happened to my hair?’ and I’ve said ‘Yeah, it’s great!’ because they look so happy that you’re happy.â€? Catherine Webb, writing on the website Quora,

Use Locally - Issue 22 September 2018

argues that our habit of saying “I’m sorryâ€?, “excuse meâ€? and “thank youâ€? is almost like a verbal form of punctuation, and “we’re not really sorry or thankful.â€? She adds: “Most Brits will not complain about someone to their face, because they expect the person to pick up on subtle cues and don’t want to have an outright conversation/ confrontation about it.â€? Media personality Stephen Fry has been dubbed ‘the most polite man in Britain’, but when he was interviewed a few years ago, he admitted to BBC presenter Mark Lawson that he feels slightly ambivalent about that title. “Being over-polite is not attractive, necessarily ‌ I can’t watch someone not saying thank you, and I can’t not say it myself. If I noticed

I hadn’t said it, I’d have to come back in the room and say ‘thank you’. It’s feeble!â€? So if Stephen Fry – an icon of good manners – feels that being too polite is a problem, what will become of the rest of us? Is there a chance that we’ll eventually reject this quintessentially British behaviour in favour of a more direct (some would say more honest) approach? It doesn’t look as though this will happen any time soon. A recent report published by research company Childwise looked at the way children LQWHUDFW ZLWK WKH DUWLĂ€FLDO intelligence bots in devices such as phones and tablets, DQG WKH Ă€QGLQJV KDYH FDXVHG concern for many British parents. Researchers found that children were barking

commands at their robotic helpers without using “pleaseâ€? and “thank youâ€?, and concluded that such behaviour might encourage these children to become aggressive and impolite when they reach adulthood. In response to Childwise’s Ă€QGLQJV $PD]RQ KDV QRZ included a politeness feature (known as ‘Magic Word’) in its Echo Dot software and it’s likely that other tech companies will soon follow $PD]RQ¡V OHDG So with robots getting in on the act, it’s unlikely that we’ll forget our “pleasesâ€? and “thank yousâ€? in future. In fact, as the technology develops, it may even become easier to tell a stranger that he’s standing on your foot: simply get your unfailingly polite robot to speak to him for you.

Just as well when you consider it’ll need 40 litres of rocket oxidiser for every second of its top speed run in South Africa next year. WATER Compounds (chemical hybrids of two or more elements) are all around us, and water is the most abundant. The world contains around 1,260 trillion million litres of the stuff, which if spread evenly over the Earth’s surface would have a depth of 2,800 metres. Only 2.5% of this water is fresh water, and in a 100-year period, a single water molecule spends 98 years in the sea, 20 months locked away as ice, about two weeks in lakes and rivers, and less than a week in the atmosphere. CHIMERA EMBRYO In genetics, a chimera is a hybrid organism with cells from two different species.

Use Locally - Issue 22 September 2018 In this case those species are pigs and people, after scientists injected human cells into an animal embryo. It’s controversial, but by editing animal embryos you could use them to host human organs for vital transplant operations. So rather than waiting for a donor, you instead grow a custom organ inside an animal.

PUGGLE Humans have been matchmaking dogs for centuries. But while some are bred for useful reasons like IHWFKLQJ SKHDVDQWV RU VQLIÀQJ out stowaways, others are GHVLJQHG WR ÀW LQ D KDQGEDJ

Take the Puggle, for example, the comedy offspring of a Beagle and a Pug. The list of top designer dogs includes labradoodles, horgis, cockapoos and schnoodles. TREE OF 40 FRUIT The Tree of 40 Fruit is an arboreal artwork created by American art professor Sam Van Aken, who grafts buds from various fruit trees onto a single ‘stock’ tree. Over several years the stock tree eventually grows branches from its different donors, each bearing a unique fruit, including peaches, plums, apricots, nectarines and cherries. So far he’s planted 16 of these hybrid trees in seven US states, which in springtime blossom pink, crimson and white. LEXUS LS500h In the not-too-distant future, every car will feature hybrid

or electric technology. Already however, carmakers such as Lexus and Toyota have a hybrid-electric version of almost every model in their showroom. In fact, 99 per cent of Lexus’s UK sales are petrol-electric hybrids, such as the new LS500h, an executive saloon with limousine-like luxury – soothing and quiet when you need it to be, but also capable of proper performance with very low emissions. All this thanks WR WKH ZRUOG·V ÀUVW PXOWL VWDJH hybrid system, featuring a 3.5litre V6 working together with clever electric motors. The best of both worlds? That’s what hybrids are all about, after all.
