FOUR PILLARS of Success EXCEL IN THE CLASSROOM In 2014-15, USF student-athletes combined to post a 3.2 grade point average, which was higher than the general student population. More than half of all USF student-athletes earned West Coast Conference allacademic recognition. A total of 10 USF athletic teams produced scores of 980 or better in the 11th annual Academic Progress Rate (APR) statistics released by the NCAA. USF’s women’s cross country (992) and track & field (992) programs received the highest scores of the Dons’ 14 programs, while the women’s volleyball program received a strong mark of 989. Seven other USF programs – men’s track & field (987), women’s basketball (986), men’s cross country (985), men’s tennis (985), women’s soccer (984), women’s golf (982) and women’s tennis – registered scored of 980 or higher. Student-athletes from USF’s women’s track and field program were honored by the USTFCCA for compiling the fifth highest cumulative grade point average in the nation among more than 208 schools during the 2014-15 academic year. Three USF women’s golfers were named Women’s Collegiate Golf AllAmerica Scholars for the 2014-15 season.

WIN AT THE HIGHEST LEVELS OF COMPETITION Over the years, USF teams have captured nine national team championships and has produced two individual champions. USF’s men’s soccer team has won five national championships while men’s basketball captured the 1949 NIT title before winning back-toback NCAA Championships in 1955 and ’56 behind legends Bill Russell and K.C. Jones. USF teams have combined to win 76 conference championships. Most recently, the women’s cross country team won five consecutive WCC Championships from 2009-13, which was the longest championship run by any women’s team in conference history. Last year, USF’s women’s basketball team returned to postseason play for the first time since 2001-02 as the Dons landed a spot in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament field. In January, Miguel Aguilar was selected in the first round (17th overall) in the MLS Draft by D.C. United.

USF Athletics is built upon Four Pillars of Success that aim to develop young men and women in this tradition: Excel in the Classroom; Win at the Highest Level of Competition; Engage in the Community; and Become Leaders in the World. The entire department, including coaches, training staff, facilities and equipment personnel and administrators, work to support student-athlete achievement in each of the Four Pillars, develop leaders and support the principles of the West Coast Conference and the NCAA.

ENGAGE IN THE COMMUNITY The mission of USF’s athletics program goes far beyond competition. USF Athletics understands it has a strong responsibility to the individual growth of all student-athletes and is invested in the intellectual, social, moral, spiritual and emotional development of every person who wears the Green & Gold. This past year, USF student-athletes, coaches and staff involved themselves in various service projects in order to gain a better sense of the community in which they live, make a difference in the lives of others and develop a passion for genuine goodness. It’s through this commitment to service leadership all members of the athletic department are inspired to follow their hearts and conscience to become greater persons of integrity and ethics.

CHAMPIONSHIP History 2015 MEN’S SOCCER

The University of San Francisco has one of the more storied programs in all of college soccer. The program holds six national championships, has been to nine College Cups, made 31 NCAA Tournament appearances, won 36 conference championships and has had 42 All-Americans. They hold a total of four NCAA championships, which are the fourth most in history behind only Saint Louis, Indiana, and Virginia. In the last decade, the Dons have won the West Coast Conference championship three times, participated in four NCAA Tournaments and have been ranked in the Top 25 in four of those seasons. But the team is only as successful as its individual parts. During that same time period, the Dons have had three WCC Players of the Year, a WCC Goalkeeper of the Year, and 13 All-WCC first teamers. The Dons have had two of the top 15 winningest coaches in NCAA history in NSCAA Hall of Famers Gus Donoghue (1946-60, .871 win percentage, first all-time) and Stephen Negoesco (1962-2000, .737, 15th all-time). Negoesco’s 540 career victories are second in NCAA history.

1966 The Dons were nearly perfect in 1966 and went into the NCAA Tournament with a 7-0-1 record. After two hard fought victories to reach the semifinals, they met Army and went into the second half in a scoreless tie but then got goals for Luis Sagastume and Sandor Hites to go up 2-0, which was enough to send the Dons to the championship match. There, Hites recorded a hat trick against Long Island as the Dons claimed their first NCAA championship.

1975-1976 Back-to-Back Champs! On the opening weekend of the 1975 season, the Dons beat powerhouse Saint Louis 5-2 and followed it up with a 4-2 loss to Philadelphia Textile. The loss sparked the Dons and they won the next 12 matches, including a 10-1 win over Washington. Once in the NCAA Tournament, the Dons faced their toughest tests of the season and pulled out overtime victories over Cal State Fullerton and Brown to advance to the championship match where they dispatched SIUEdwardsville 4-0. The following year, the Dons came in with the target on their back. They went 5-2-2 in their first nine matches but kicked it into high gear by winning 12 of its next 13 matches going into the NCAA Tournament. USF reached the final against Indiana and got a goal from All-American Andy Atuegbu to put them on top for good. The Dons won their second straight title and Atuegbu won his second MVP award in as many years.

1980 The Dons went into 1980 with high expectations after going 23-3-1 and setting a school record for goals in 1979 (133). That momentum carried over to 1980 and the Dons recorded seven shutouts in their first nine matches and was a perfect 19-0-2 going into the NCAA Tournament. After tough matches against UCLA, Saint Louis, and Alabama A&M to reach the final, the Dons found themselves up against the wall as they fell behind Indiana 2-0. However, the Dons rallied and tied the game 3-3 to force overtime. There, Fidelis Atuegbu scored from 20 yards out to win the Dons’ sixth national championship.
