Win at the Highest Levels of Competition Over the years, USF teams have captured nine national team championships and has produced two individual champions. USF’s men’s soccer team has won five national championships while men’s basketball captured the 1949 NIT title before winning back-to-back NCAA Championships in 1955 and ’56 behind legends Bill Russell and K.C. Jones. USF teams have combined to win 76 conference championships. Most recently, the women’s cross country team won five consecutive WCC Championships from 200913, which was the longest championship run by any women’s team in conference history. Last year, USF’s women’s basketball team returned to postseason play for the first time since 200102 as the Dons landed a spot in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament field. In January, Miguel Aguilar was selected in the first round (17th overall) in the MLS Draft by D.C. United.
2015 The VOLLEYBALL University of San Francisco is committed to excellence in athletics as part of a larger
commitment to educating students in the Jesuit Catholic tradition. USF Athletics is built upon Four Pillars of Success that aim to develop young men and women in this tradition: Excel in the Classroom; Win at the Highest Level of Competition; Engage in the Community; and Become Leaders in the World. The entire department, including coaches, training staff, facilities and equipment personnel and administrators, work to support student-athlete achievement in each of the Four Pillars, develop leaders and support the principles of the West Coast Conference and the NCAA.
Engage in the community The mission of USF’s athletics program goes far beyond competition. USF Athletics understands it has a strong responsibility to the individual growth of all student-athletes and is invested in the intellectual, social, moral, spiritual and emotional development of every person who wears the Green & Gold. This past year, USF student-athletes, coaches and staff involved themselves in various service projects in order to gain a better sense of the community in which they live, make a difference in the lives of others and develop a passion for genuine goodness. It’s through this commitment to service leadership all members of the athletic department are inspired to follow their hearts and conscience to become greater persons of integrity and ethics.
Become Leaders in the World USF student-athletes graduate with the skills they need to succeed in whatever career path they choose. USF studentathletes will excel in setting and achieving goals throughout their college careers and beyond. Approximately 76 percent of recent USF graduates begin their full-time careers or pursue a graduate degree.

2015 VOLLEYBALL 2015 Season Outlook The San Francisco volleyball team is in the midst of rebuilding – a new identity after the loss of a prolific senior, and a new mindset on the court that morphs into a spirit of toughness and competitiveness. Playing the underdog role after being selected to finish the West Coast Conference tied for eighth in the preseason, the Dons are poised to rise to the occasion during this team evolution. “We are transitioning, and during this time we want to develop a mindset of a tougher team, a competitive team that in the next few years can really grow,” noted head coach Gilad Doron. “This can be a great year, a challenging year, and we hope we’re going to be ready to tackle them and show our fans that we are a Dons team ready to play anybody.” The Dons have a collective of 14 women prepared to fill the void that the Dons face after the matriculation of last year’s leader Valentina Zaloznik, who led the team in points, kills, blocks and aces on season ago. Zaloznik, who is entering her first season as a professional in France, might be irreplaceable as a singular entity, but the whole can become greater than its parts when a team shows synergy on the court. “You don’t replace Valentina,” remarked Doron. “Hopefully the team is up to the challenge to see who steps up, who takes this opportunity, who is going to get those swings, who is going to get those blocks, who’s going to get those aces. I think collectively each one is going to have to grow and take that upon themselves. “This team is going to have to find a new identity, and learn how to rely on each other more and how to collectively try to fill this gap.” The hitters that will be swinging away on the court include last season’s No. 2 scorer in junior Katarina Pilepic. One year ago, the native of Novi Vinodolski, Croatia, compiled 333 kills and 66 total blocks for the Dons. Senior Sara Staengle and sophomore Jessica Gaffney are also expected to play a primary role in the offensive production. USF junior Emily Reed and senior Courtney Sabahi round out the stable of hitters in the Dons’ arsenal. In the middle, the Dons return sophomore Oluoma Okaro with the
assistance from Gaffney, and a new face with a familiar last name in Madison Murtagh. The freshman from San Francisco is the second Murtagh to play for USF after sister Mackenzie played her final game for the Dons in 2013. “Madison very mature for her age, she knows what she wants to do, she applies herself and I think she knows the toughness she needs to bring,” observed Doron. “She has prepared herself for this moment for a long time. I can’t wait to have her on the team this year, and I can’t wait to have the family on the sideline again for four years.” On the defensive side of the ball, the USF defense is anchored by sophomore libero Kim Gutierrez. The WCC All-Freshman Team member from last season finished her first season ranking second in the WCC in total digs (505) and digs per set (4.51). She will be helped by senior Jessica Keenan and a trio of newcomers to bolster and protect the court. True freshmen Dane Miller and Kellie Hirotsu join redshirt freshman and first-year Don Hayley Bosworth in the defensive duties. A pair of setters return to direct the action, as a healthy Jurja Vlasic suits up alongside junior Kiara McKibben to guide the squad and control the play on the court. Last season, McKibben finished the year with 1,041 assists to pace the team. “The setting position is key,” explained Doron. “Last year we lost Jurja in the middle of the year, and this year she should be up and running and

healthy, and poised for her senior year. We’re really counting on her to have the best year she’s ever had. We’re looking at Kiara to show some maturity and growth and bring some competitive spirit into her talent, and I think she has made some good strides.” As always, Doron and staff have compiled a stout non-conference schedule with two home tournaments, and weekend soirees at Utah State and St. John’s before diving headfirst into the West Coast Conference slate. Proving time and time again that the league is one of the tops in the nation, the WCC boasts the 2014 NCAA runners-up in BYU, who will be USF’s first league opponent. After running through the 10-team gauntlet, the Dons hope to finish in the top half of the conference and vie for a spot in the upcoming championship field. Through it all, team cohesion and desire will be paramount to any successes seen on the court. “This is a year that we’re going to have to rely on each other the most – coaches and players – because we don’t have this one player that everybody looks at anymore,” said Doron. “We’re going to have to do it as a team. “But it can be a benchmark for many, many years to come if we can establish that the team is bigger than one person when everybody says ‘what can I do on a daily basis to get better, what do I do on a daily basis to make my teammates better.’ It’s fun to watch how a team can really bring it together, and our team is really going to have to do that in order to be successful this year. You’ve got to find a way.”

2015 VOLLEYBALL
2014 Season Recap Milestones and Highlights USF started the season on a five-match winning streak, and took the title at the San Francisco Invitational to open the year after straight-set victories over SMU and Fordham and a 3-1 win against Georgia. The Dons closed the season earning seven sweeps, including 3-0 home victories in conference action against Santa Clara, Saint Mary’s and San Diego. The 2014 season saw the career of one of USF’s most dominant players come to an end, as Valentina Zaloznik led the team on the court. She posted her 1,000th career kill on Sept. 30 as the Dons dispatched Saint Mary’s, becoming just the 10th women in school history to reach the mark of distinction. Zaloznik also swooped into the single-game record books after compiling a match-high 13 kills on 14 attempts, with no errors – a .929 attack percentage – in a dominating performance against the visiting Fordham Rams. Katie Morgan, USF’s Director of Creative Video, was tapped by the American Volleyball Coaches Association for the 2014-15 AVCA Grant Burger Media Award. Morgan’s video productions were recognized by the AVCA for advancing the sport of volleyball through her work.

2015 VOLLEYBALL Conference Superlatives
Valentina Zaloznik capped off her prolific career for the Green and Gold as the first volleyball player in school history to become a three-time All-West Coast Conference first team selection. Also earning honorable mention status as a freshman, she became the second USF women to be recognized by the league in each of her four seasons. As a senior, Zaloznik paced the team with 351 kills on .315 hitting, 108 total blocks and 31 service aces.
USF Record Setters
Valentina Zaloznik raced up the record books in a multitude of categories in her last year as a Don, and newcomer Kim Gutierrez made her mark in her first season at USF. All told individual match, season and career marks worthy of the school record books were posted during the 2014 campaign.
Libero Kim Gutierrez earned a place on the WCC All-Freshman Team, extending USF’s streak to five straight seasons with a player on the AllFreshman squad. Wearing the yellow jersey, Gutierrez amassed 505 digs in her first year on the Hilltop, and her 4.51 digs per set rated second in the conference.

Academic Excellence
WCC Leaders
The Dons continue to uphold the First Pillar through a high standard of academic achievement. For the fourth consecutive year, the team was honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) as a top performing team in the classroom for maintaining at least at 3.3 cumulative team gpa for the 2014-15 academic year. Additional to receiving AVCA accolades, 12 USF volleyball players were selected to the West Coast Conference commissioner’s honor roll with three women earning gold honors. Valentina Zaloznik was tapped for the WCC All-Academic Team for the third season, and the trio of Inbar Vinarsky, Sara Staengle and Kiara McKibben earned honorable mention status for their performance in the classroom.

Community Commitment
USF’s volleyball players continuously participate in the department’s community relations initiatives annually, including reading to youth through local elementary schools and San Francisco RBI, demonstrating the pyramid of success through the Harper for Kids program and serving meals at the St. Vincent de Paul Society. In addition, head coach Gilad Doron and student-athletes Jurja Vlasic and Anja Segota traveled to Lima, Peru, over winter break to volunteer their time and efforts. The trip, through the University’s Arrupe Immersion Program, gave the trio the opportunity to live, work and reflect in the economically marginalized community by teaching local children how sports can help transform their lives and communities.
Hall of Famers
In February, Haley Carrol ’09 became the fifth woman in USF volleyball history to earn a place in the USF Athletics Hall of Fame. One of the best defensive players to come through the Hilltop, Carroll was a three-time All-WCC performer, including first team selections in 2007 and ’09. Her 2,089 digs ranks first on USF’s all-time career list, nearly 400 more than her closest pursuer. In 2007, the Gilroy native was named the WCC’s Defensive Player of the Year and she played a key role on USF’s 2008 NCAA Tournament team. Head coach Gilad Doron shared the spotlight at San Francisco RBI’s fourth annual All-Star Dinner and Hall of Fame induction in May. He was recognized for his ongoing advocacy of the literacy program, alongside fellow USF head coaches Nino Giarratano (baseball) and Helen Lehman-Winters (cross country and track & field).

2015 VOLLEYBALL Dons in the Pros “The Dons family is expanding across Europe, and it’s great. These are two very highly-respected leagues in Europe, and hopefully Val and Malina with both continue to build on their professional careers and open the door to future Dons to go pro.” — USF head coach Gilad Doron Malina Terrell
Valentina Zaloznik
After leaving the Hilltop with her degree in 2014, the Richmond, Calif., native ventured to Denmark to play professionally. In her debut season abroad, Terrell was the top scorer in the Danish Elite League, earning league most valuable player after her stellar season for Fortuna Odense. She now joins the German Budesliga after signing to play with NawaRo Straubing.
The native of Ljubno ob Savinji, Slovenia, and 2015 graduate of USF is the first volleyball player in school history to become a three-time AllWest Coast Conference first team performer. In her four-year career for the Dons, Zaloznik notched many match, season and career records, and she stands as one of just 10 women to reach the 1,000kill mark. Zaloznik inked her first professional contract to play with Pays d’Aix Venelles, in France’s Ligue Nationale de Volley.

Sand Volleyball 2015 Season Highlights
Dons in the Polls
Bear Down
For the third straight meeting on the sand, the Dons dispatched Bay Area foe California 3-2 in USF’s first home match of the season. Despite close outcomes and a 3-2 final tally on each occasion, USF has never lost to the Bears outdoors.
Home is Where the Heart is
The Dons went 3-0 on the season on its home court at Piper Park in Larkspur, Calif. Along with dispatching Cal, USF defeated San Jose State and then-No. 13 Saint Mary’s in the University of San Francisco Invitational on March 18.
Heavy Hitters
Expanding its schedule to include multiple matches against non-consortium opponents, the Dons faced off against six ranked teams throughout the year, including matches against the eventual 2015 AVCA champions, Southern Cal, and the tournament runners-up, Long Beach State. In fact, USF took on four of the top five in the final AVCA rankings over the course of the season.
Advance, Advance, Advance
For the first time in program history, USF pairs faced off in pairs bracket play at three tournaments. USF’s top duo of Courtney Sabahi and Valentina Zaloznik advanced to the semifinal round at the Santa Cruz Collegiate Invitational on March 29, as did the No. 5 pairing of Anja Segota and Inbar Vinarsky. Dons also dotted the brackets at the NorCal Invitational and USFAV’s Collegiate Challenge.
Most Valuable Player
Senior Valentina Zaloznik followed up her stellar season indoors with a solid performance on the sand as part of USF’s No. 1 tandem. The native of Ljubno ob Savinji, Slovenia, was rewarded for her efforts as the team’s most valuable player at USF’s annual Hilltop Awards.
The Dons found themselves receiving votes in the DiG Magazine Collegiate Sand Volleyball poll on four occasions, first receiving votes the week of March 9, after USF notched a 4-1 win against San Jose State at the NorCal Invitational. After taking a trio of wins against California, San Jose State and then-No. 13 Saint Mary’s, USF continued to receive votes in the March 23 edition. The Dons maintained a presence as a vote-getter throughout the remainder of the regular season, spotted in the also receiving votes category on March 30 and April 13.
