FOUR PILLARS of Success EXCEL IN THE CLASSROOM In 2014-15, USF student-athletes combined to post a 3.2 grade point average, which was higher than the general student population. More than half of all USF student-athletes earned West Coast Conference all-academic recognition. A total of 10 USF athletic teams produced scores of 980 or better in the 11th annual Academic Progress Rate (APR) statistics released by the NCAA. USF’s women’s cross country (992) and track & field (992) programs received the highest scores of the Dons’ 14 programs, while the women’s volleyball program received a strong mark of 989. Seven other USF programs – men’s track & field (987), women’s basketball (986), men’s cross country (985), men’s tennis (985), women’s soccer (984), women’s golf (982) and women’s tennis – registered scored of 980 or higher. Student-athletes from USF’s women’s track and field program were honored by the USTFCCA for compiling the fifth highest cumulative grade point average in the nation among more than 208 schools during the 2014-15 academic year. Three USF women’s golfers were named Women’s Collegiate Golf All-America Scholars for the 2014-15 season.

WIN AT THE HIGHEST LEVELS OF COMPETITION Over the years, USF teams have captured nine national team championships and has produced two individual champions. USF’s men’s soccer team has won five national championships while men’s basketball captured the 1949 NIT title before winning back-toback NCAA Championships in 1955 and ’56 behind legends Bill Russell and K.C. Jones. USF teams have combined to win 76 conference championships. Most recently, the women’s cross country team won five consecutive WCC Championships from 2009-13, which was the longest championship run by any women’s team in conference history. Last year, USF’s women’s basketball team returned to postseason play for the first time since 2001-02 as the Dons landed a spot in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament field. In January, Miguel Aguilar was selected in the first round (17th overall) in the MLS Draft by D.C. United.

The University of San Francisco is committed to excellence in athletics as part of a larger commitment to educating students in the Jesuit Catholic tradition. USF Athletics is built upon Four Pillars of Success that aim to develop young men and women in this tradition: Excel in the Classroom; Win at the Highest Level of Competition; Engage in the Community; and Become Leaders in the World. The entire department, including coaches, training staff, facilities and equipment personnel and administrators, work to support student-athlete achievement in each of the Four Pillars, develop leaders and support the principles of the West Coast Conference and the NCAA.

ENGAGE IN THE COMMUNITY The mission of USF’s athletics program goes far beyond competition. USF Athletics understands it has a strong responsibility to the individual growth of all student-athletes and is invested in the intellectual, social, moral, spiritual and emotional development of every person who wears the Green & Gold. This past year, USF student-athletes, coaches and staff involved themselves in various service projects in order to gain a better sense of the community in which they live, make a difference in the lives of others and develop a passion for genuine goodness. It’s through this commitment to service leadership all members of the athletic department are inspired to follow their hearts and conscience to become greater persons of integrity and ethics.

BECOME LEADERS IN THE WORLD USF student-athletes graduate with the skills they need to succeed in whatever career path they choose. USF student-athletes will excel in setting and achieving goals throughout their college careers and beyond. Approximately 76 percent of recent USF graduates begin their full-time careers or pursue a graduate degree.

DANA HENDERSHOTT JERMAINE CLARK

1968-71 Hendershott was near untouchable while on the mound. The 1971 All-American held a career 2.20 ERA (school record) and in that storied ’71 season, Hendershott collected a 1.67 ERA and complied a record 0.60 ERA in league games. He was selected in the 26th round of the 1971 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

1995-97 Clark is a two-time All-American and was named to the All-WCC First Team three times. The infielder is USF’s career batting leader with a .361 average and is the school’s all-time leader in steals with 86. He was taken in the fifth round of the 1997 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners. He made his Major League debut on Apr. 4, 2001 with the Texas Rangers.

TAGGERT BOZIED

2010-12 Zimmer quickly earned a reputation as one of the more feared pitchers in the WCC. The hard-throwing right hander struck out 200 batters in his three seasons on the Hilltop, sixth on the USF all-time list, and held a strikeout-to-walk ratio of nearly 5-to-1. He was a two-time All-WCC Team selection and then was taken fifth overall in the 2012 MLB Draft by the Kansas City Royals. It was the highest a Don had even been taken.

DANTE BENEDETTI

1998-2001 Bozied is the most prolific hitter to ever wear Green and Gold. He is the only three-time All-American in program history, is one of the Top 50 athletes in WCC history and was the first Triple Crown winner in the modern era of the WCC. In 1999, he hit an astonishing 30 home runs with a .936 slugging percentage, both were best in the NCAA. Bozied was named the 1999 WCC Player of the Year and was taken in the second round of the 2000 MLB Draft. He also remains the WCC’s all-time leader in home runs with 60.

KYLE ZIMMER

Head Coach 1962-80, Player 1937-40 Benedetti was the patriarch of USF baseball for the better part of 20 years. He helped to rescue and rebuild the baseball program when he took over the team in 1962. He personally paid for equipment and uniforms for the team and helped guide them to 373 victories in his 19 seasons (second in USF history). Benedetti was named the West Coast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1971 and inducted into the San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame. USF’s home field was renamed Benedetti Diamond in 1980 and the team MVP award was also named for the great Dons coach. He lettered in football, baseball and boxing while a student at then-St. Ignatius College.

2016 PLAYERS TO WATCH

Anthony Shew RHP | Senior R/R | 6-2 | 205 Mission Viejo, Calif. | Saddleback CC

31

2015 - 2nd Team All-WCC Shew will enter the 2016 season as the Dons’ de facto ace and Friday starter. After transferring from Saddleback College, Shew stepped right into the USF rotation in 2015 and became one of the Dons’ most dependable arms. He made 14 starts, compiling 94.0 innings on the year – fourth-best in the WCC – while putting together a 7-5 record and a 3.64 ERA. Shew won’t blow hitters away with electric stuff, but he’s certain to provide a consistent force at the top of the rotation, proven by his eight outings where he lasted at least eight innings last season. The command and offspeed repertoire that allowed him to strikeout 70 batters while only walking 19 a year ago will be on display in 2016.

Nico Giarratano SS | Junior S/R | 6-0 | 195 San Francisco, Calif. | St. Ignatius Prep

6

2014 - WCC All-Freshman One spot in the lineup the Dons’ won’t have to worry about in 2016 is shortstop, with Giarratano returning to the middle infield after starting every game but two in his USF career. Coupled with Miroglio behind the plate, the Dons should enjoy consistent defense up the middle, especially given Giarratano’s .948 career fielding percentage. In his third go-around in the WCC, expect Giarratano to emerge as a greater offensive threat at the top of the order after hitting .237 with a home run, nine doubles and 18 RBI last year and .242 with 10 doubles and 22 RBI en route to a WCC All-Freshman nod in 2014.

2016 PLAYERS TO WATCH

26

Dominic Miroglio C | Junior R/R | 6-0 | 205 Oakland, Calif. | UCLA In a lineup that will feature plenty of new faces in 2016, Miroglio will be leaned upon to provide the offensive spark in the middle of the order. After leading all WCC catchers in batting average (.340) and RBI (38) last season, Miroglio stands as the Dons’ top returning offensive threat. A transfer from UCLA prior to the 2015 season, Miroglio has established himself as a standout at the plate and defensively, throwing out 39 percent of would-be base stealers. While not a huge power threat (3 HR in 2015), Miroglio should drive in plenty of runs as long as the rest of the lineup can help set the table.

Matt Sinatro IF/OF | Junior L/R | 5-11 | 175 Sammamish, Wash. | Skyline HS

4

Conventional baseball wisdom holds that speed kills, and that’s one of the biggest assets that Sinatro brings to the table as the Dons’ leading returning base stealer. With nine career stolen bases to his credit in 13 attempts, Sinatro looks to be a consistent threat on the base paths for the Dons in 2016. A utility player during his first two seasons in which he started 85 of the team’s 108 games, Sinatro should emerge as a go-to defender with a depleted outfield from a year ago. Despite hitting only .198 in 121 at bats last season and .236 in 165 at bats in 2014, Sinatro is poised for a breakout year at the plate and should play a huge role in providing base runners for hitters like Miroglio to drive in.

Matt Hiserman Pitching Coach

Now in his 18th year on the Hilltop, Nino Giarratano has guided the Dons’ baseball program to unprecedented success since taking over prior to the 1999 season. The three-time West Coast Conference Coach of the Year has led USF to two WCC championships (2006, 2011), three postseason appearances (2006, 2011, 2013) and has compiled the most wins in program history (480 and counting). Giarratano has had 44 players named to the All-WCC first team, including two WCC Player of the Year awards (Taggert Bozied, 1999; Scott Cousins, 2006), two WCC Defensive Players of the Year (Joey Railey, 2008; Stephen Yarrow, 2011) and one WCC Pitcher of the Year selection (Patrick McGuigan, 2006). Giarratano’s player development success is highlighted by the 43 Dons that have been drafted by Major League Baseball teams during his tenure. Most recently, Christian Cecilio was a 22nd round selection of the San Diego Padres in the 2015 draft. Following the 2012 season, right-handed pitcher Kyle Zimmer was selected fifth overall by the Kansas City Royals, making Zimmer the highest draft pick in USF baseball history. In 2014, Kyle’s brother, Bradley, became the fourth first-round pick under Giarratano when he was selected 21st overall by the Cleveland Indians. The other two first-rounders under Giarratano’s watch were Evan Frederickson (2008, White Sox) and Aaron Poreda (2007, White Sox). Giarratano became the winningest coach in USF baseball history when he surpassed Hilltop legend Dante Benedetti with his 374th victory in 2009. Entering the 2016 season, Giarratano sits at third on the WCC’s all-time list for wins (480) and is the second winningest active WCC coach behind San Diego’s Rich Hill. In 2006, Giarratano led the Dons to a milestone by winning a programrecord 39 games and claiming the team’s first WCC championship. USF duplicated their championship form in 2011 when they finished in first place again.

COACHING STAFF

Players Drafted Under Nino Giarratano Since Head Coach Nino Giarratano’s arrival on the USF campus, he has put together some of the better teams in the school’s history. More importantly, he has helped to develop players to the point where they could reach the dream of playing professional baseball. In his 16 seasons, 39 players have been drafted by Major League teams including four first round picks, three second round selections and two taken in the third round. None have been higher than Kyle Zimmer in 2012 when he was taken with the fifth overall pick by the Kansas City Royals. His younger brother, Bradley, was taken 21st overall by the Cleveland Indians last season. Former Dons stars Jesse Foppert, Aaron Poreda and Scott Cousins have seen time in the Majors after developing their skills on the Hilltop.

2015 IN REVIEW 2015 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

CARVING OUT THEIR PLACE

CECILIO SELECTED BY PADRES

Seniors Christian Cecilio and Brendan Hendriks finished up their careers among the top-10 in a variety of USF single-season and career records categories.

LHP Christian Cecilio was the lone Don selected in the 2015 MLB Draft when the San Diego Padres picked him in the 22nd round (657th overall). Cecilio posted a 5-4 record and finished second in the conference with a 2.05 ERA in his 14 appearances (all starts) for the Dons in 2015. He tossed four complete games during the course of the season, including three shutouts. He worked at least 7.0 innings in all but one of his starts and eclipsed 8.0 innings eight times. A native of San Jose, Calif. who attended Bellarmine College Preparatory, Cecilio compiled a 15-21 record and a 3.32 ERA in 69 appearances (56 starts) during his four-year (2012-15) collegiate career. He is the 38th USF player to be drafted in the Nino Giarratano coaching era dating back to 1999.

The Dons were well represented on the 2015 All-WCC squad with five players earning all-conference honors. Senior LHP Christian Cecilio led the way with a first-team nod, while junior RHP Anthony Shew took home second-team honors and senior OF Derek Atkinson and senior INF Connor Hofmann earned honorable mention recognition. Meanwhile, LHP Sam Granoff was named to the all-freshman team. Off the field, Cecilio (3.59 GPA) and junior IF Michael Eaton (3.69) earned a place on the WCC All-Academic first team, with Atkinson, senior INF Brendan Hendriks and senior LHP Matt Narahara earning all-academic honorable mention recognition.

Career Wins 15 (t-8th)

SCHEDULING THE BEST True to form, the Dons did not shy away from top competition in 2015. USF faced five top-25 opponents last year and collected seven wins over top100 RPI opponents. Among the elite matchups were a season-opening road series at No. 5 Texas Tech and a road set at No. 15 Dallas Baptist, in which the Dons lost one of those contests 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth. The Dons made an impact by taking both games of a midweek series at No. 8 Oregon before going on to top No. 24 Cal 3-1 at home. USF followed that up with an 8-3 win at No. 19 Nevada and then proceeded to sweep WCCchampion San Diego in a three game series in San Diego. Also appearing on the Dons’ 2015 slate were road games against perennial powers Stanford, Tulane and New Mexico. As a testament to their competitiveness with some of the nation’s best programs, USF lost all of those games against Stanford, Tulane and New Mexico, but none of the contests were decided by more than two runs.

WELCOME TO THE HILLTOP Sophomore catcher Dominic Miroglio returned to the Bay Area after transferring from UCLA prior to the 2015 season. The Bishop O’Dowd High (Oakland, Calif.) product proceeded to lead the Dons in hitting, posting a .340 batting average that ranked 10th in the WCC. Miroglio started all 53 games – 34 behind the plate, 18 at designated hitter, and one in left field. He ended up pacing the Dons in RBI (38), while clubbing three home runs and rapping 11 doubles – third-most on the team.

The USF pitching staff ranked third in the WCC with team ERA of 3.53. Don pitchers proved to be the most durable, leading the conference with six complete games on the year, including four shutouts. The Dons also helped their cause by not allowing many free passes as they led the WCC with only 70 walks in 2015. Senior LHP Christian Cecilio led the Dons and ranked second in the WCC with a 2.05 ERA in 14 starts. Cecilio also led the conference in complete games (4), shutouts (3), and innings pitched (109.2). 18 University of THE BEST CITY EVER

WEST COAST CONFERENCE

Lynn Holzman Commissioner

The West Coast Conference was formed in 1952 to provide a convenient venue for five San Francisco Bay Area schools to compete in basketball. Since that modest beginning, the Conference has evolved and grown to become a nationally recognized and competitive force in intercollegiate athletics, with 13 league-sponsored sports: baseball; both men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, and tennis; and women’s volleyball and women’s rowing. The league began in 1952-53 as the California Basketball Association, and included College of the Pacific, Saint Mary’s College, University of San Francisco, San Jose State University, and Santa Clara University. It remained five teams until 1956-57, when Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, and Fresno State joined the conference, giving it eight teams. At that time, the conference’s name was changed to the West Coast Athletic Conference (WCAC). After just one season, Fresno State departed and the WCAC remained a sevenmember conference until welcoming UC Santa Barbara in 1965-66. Four years later UC Santa Barbara and San Jose State left the WCAC, and were replaced by Nevada-Reno and Nevada-Las Vegas - expanding the conference’s footprint to a second state. Pacific announced its departure in 1971, and was replaced by Seattle University for the 1971-72 school year. Four years later, UNLV announced its independence after winning a WCAC men’s basketball crown. The WCAC was left with seven member institutions for two years, before welcoming the University of Portland prior to the 1977-78 school year. Nevada left the WCAC in 1979, and the conference welcomed Gonzaga University and the University of San Diego to the mix beginning in 1979-80. One year later, Seattle ended its participation at the Division I level, reducing the number of schools in the WCAC from nine to eight.

The WCAC shortened its name to West Coast Conference in 1989, and developed a new logo in 1995 that lasted until 2011. Thirty years after its most recent expansion, the WCC welcomed its ninth member by extending an invitation to Brigham Young University in September of 2010. BYU officially joined the West Coast Conference on July 1, 2011, followed by the return of University of the Pacific on July 1, 2013. Today, the 10 WCC members span the western coast of the United States from Canada to Mexico, from the pine forests of Eastern Washington, to the Columbia River Basin, to the dynamic San Francisco Bay Area, to the sunny beaches of Southern California, to the majestic mountains of Utah. The Conference is characterized by the stability of its membership - only two conferences have been together longer - and its unique emphasis on combining excellence in athletics with excellence in academics. The Conference recognizes championships in each of its sports, has hosted NCAA championship events, and produced 26 NCAA Division I individual or team champions. And, many outstanding WCC student-athletes have gone on to excel in professional sports. The long and rich history of the WCC demonstrates that success in intercollegiate athletics can be built on the foundation of values, character, and academics.
