Head Coach Rex Walters A new era began April 7, 2008, when the University of San Francisco named Rex Walters head coach of the men’s basketball program. The former Kansas star and NBA veteran hit the ground running, and entering his fourth season on the Hilltop, excitement continues to build for what promises to be a memorable season. The Dons look prepared to follow Walters’ challenge: Play hard. Play smart. Play together. After a dismal 4-9 start to the 2010-11 season, USF righted the ship in dramatic fashion and ripped off 11 victories in its last 15 games to close out the regular season. The Dons posted a 10-4 slate in the challenging West Coast Conference – the program’s best league mark since 1982 – and were in contention for the team’s first WCC Regular Season Championship in nearly three decades on the final day. Highlights of the regular season included thrilling overtime triumphs against Colorado (83-81) and eventual WCC Champion Gonzaga (96-91). San Francisco qualified for its first postseason tournament since 2004 and marched to the quarterfinals of the 2011 CollegeInsider. com Postseason Tournament. Walters’ coaching pedigree began as a player, receiving tutelage from some of the game’s legendary coaches. Roy Williams at the University of Kansas and the NBA’s Chuck Daly, Larry Brown and Pat Riley all mentored Walters as a player. Walters starred for two seasons at Kansas, and in 68 starts under Williams, averaged 15.6 points per game. KU combined to go 56-12 overall and won backto-back Big Eight titles, capped by a trip to the 1993 Final Four. A two-time All-Big Eight team pick, Walters was the 1993 Big Eight Male Athlete of the Year. After graduating from Kansas in 1993 with a B.S. in education, Walters was selected by New Jersey as the 16th overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft. He went on to play seven seasons in total with the Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat. Walters and his wife, Deanna, have five children: Addison (15), Drew (13), Riley (10), Gunner (8) and welcomed Ace Jordan in July of 2008. IT’S BEEN A WHILE

DONS TALE OF THE TAPE - 2010-11 SEason The keys to USF’s Surge: USF’s 2010-11 men’s basketball team will never be accused of using a fast start. In fact, the Dons carried a 4-9 record into its Hilltop Challenge game against Hampton December 30. From there, it was a significantly different story. These charts at right and below show the tale of the tape, measuring key statistical categories during the Dons 4-9 start compared to its 15-6 finish; USF’s non-conference slate against the 2011 West Coast Conference campaign; and finally, compares the 2009-10 season with 2010-11 regular season.

SAN FRANCISCO DONS BASKETBALL - PAGE 7 NEWCOMERS READY TO ROCK THE HILLTOP: What a difference a year makes. Last season San Francisco entered the year with just seven years of returning Division I experience, six coming under the direction of head coach Rex Walters. This season, the Dons welcome back all five starters and 10 letter-winners from a squad that posted a 19-15 record and a 10-4 West Coast Conference slate. This year the Dons welcome three newcomers to the fold - freshmen guards Chris Adams (Covina, CA) and Gavin Hoffmann (Portland, OR), and freshman forward Mark Tollefsen (Danville, CA).

NEWCOMER NOTES u Chris Adams was a two-time Division II CIF Southern First Team selection u Mark Tollefsen helped San Ramon Valley HS to a 54-7 record in final two seasons u Gavin Hoffmann earned First Team All-State honors in Oregon after senior season u Avery Johnson is the third guard on the team from Southern California

CARDIAC KIDS: USF can never be accused of being boring or even necessarily doing things the easy way. Last season, as they compiled their best West Coast Conference record (10-4) since 1982, the Dons trailed at halftime of a whopping 10 of their 14 league games. USF held just three intermission leads during league play - a 31-28 lead against Portland (1/20/11), a 31-17 advantage against San Diego (2/10/11) and a 35-30 edge at Portland (2/17/11). The Dons overcame a 35-24 halftime deficit at Santa Clara (1/8/11) and roared back from a 13-point, 39-26 shortfall against Pepperdine (2/24/11). USF IN THE JESUIT BASKETBALL SPOTLIGHT: USF is proud of its rich Jesuit heritage and the Dons will compete in no fewer than eight games against fellow Jesuit schools during the 2011-12 season. The Dons beat Loyola Marymount 77-75 in the regular season finale February 26 on the Hilltop. With the win against the Lions, USF improved to 6-3 against Jesuit foes during the 201011 campaign. San Francisco is taking part in the Jesuit Spotlight Project for the fourth-consecutive season, using Jesuit basketball to raise awareness of the outstanding education available at the nation’s 28 Jesuit colleges and universities. Last season, Michael Williams and Rashad Green were named to the 2010-11 All-Jesuit Men’s Basketball All-American Team. For more information, log on to www.ajcunet.edu/jesuitbasketball.
