THIS WEEK: After beating eventual WCC member Pacific on Tuesday, 5-2, the Dons are set to host the final homestand of the 2012 season against Santa Clara. The three-game WCC series starts on Friday, May 11 at 3:00 p.m. in what could be Junior RHP Kyle Zimmer’s last start at Benedetti Diamond in his collegiate career. After Saturday’s 1:00 p.m. game, the Sunday series finale will start at 1:00 p.m. with a special pre-game Senior Day ceremony. Nine seniors and redshirt junior, Jared Denham, will be honored prior to the game. Following the game, the inaugural 2012 Hilltop Awards ceremony will take place at 6:30 p.m. in War Memorial Gym. WEEK THAT WAS: The Dons went 2-2 last week beating Sacramento State 10-1, before winning one of three against Pepperdine in Malibu, CA. The Dons won the series opener against the Waves in convincing fashion behind redshirt sophomore Abe Bobb’s first career complete game. Bobb’s effort earned him his second WCC Pitcher of the Week honors this season. LOOKING AHEAD: After playing Santa Clara, the Dons enter the final week of the 2012 season. USF will travel to play Pac-12 power Stanford on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. and then conclude the season with a three-game set against Saint Mary’s in Moraga, CA. GOLDEN SPIKES WATCH LIST: Junior RHP Kyle Zimmer was named to the 60-Man Midseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List last week. The La Jolla, Calif., native leads the WCC in shutouts (2), strikeouts (85), and strikeouts per nine innings (10.02). LIVE VIDEO/AUDIO/STATS: http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/usf.portal#

CAPTAIN AMERICA
Junior pitcher Kyle Zimmer may be making the last home start of his career at Benedetti Diamond on Friday, May 11 against Santa Clara. The La Jolla, Calif., native has been touted as a first round draft pick in this year’s MLB draft. Before the 2012 season started, Zimmer was named a second team All-American in Baseball America’s college preseason poll. The right-hander became the first Don to be named a preseason All-American since Tagg Bozied in 2000. More recently, Zimmer was named to the 60-Man Midseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List on May 1. Zimmer had a terrific March, tossing back-to-back compete game shutouts against Hawaii and UCSB. Against the Rainbows, Zimmer stuck out 11 and allowed only three hits en route to his first win of the 2012 season. On March 24, Zimmer blanked the Gauchos, striking out nine and walking only one to propel the Dons to a 2-0 victory. The righty has been equally impressive in April, going at least 7.0 innings in each of his four starts against WCC opponents, going 2-1. Against No. 30 Gonzaga, Zimmer went 8.0 strong innings, striking out 10 and walking only one en route to his fourth victory of the season. Against BYU, the righty pitched 7.0 innings allowing just one run, while striking out 10 and walking only two. Zimmer is 4-3 with a 2.71 ERA this season. The La Jolla, Calif., native leads the WCC in shutouts (2), strikeouts (85), and strikeouts per nine innings (10.02). Zimmer’s three complete games rank second, while his 2.71 ERA ranks 9th, and his .227 batting average against ranks 8th. The 6-4, 220-pound righty has shown exceptional control on the mound issuing only 13 walks in 76.1 innings pitched and ranks 17th in the nation with an 85-to-13 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Zimmer’s 85 strikeouts ranks 24th in the nation, tied with Stanford ace Mark Appel. JUSTIN’S TIME: College of San Mateo transfer Justin Maffei has been the Dons best hitter in 2012. The CF ranks first on the team in hits (56), runs (42), total bases (75), on-base pct. (.461), hit by pitch (15), and steals (24). Maffei also ranks first in the WCC in stolen bases having swiped 24 in 28 chances. In addition, Maffei ranks 2nd in runs scored (42), on-base percentage (.461) and bases on balls (34), 8th in hits (56), and 10th in total bases (75) in the WCC. Justin ranks 9th all-time in single season steals in Dons’ history ahead of Jonnie Knoble (23 in 2007) AMAZING ABE: Redshirt sophomore Abe Bobb (6-4, 2.49 ERA) has been excellent as the Dons’ Saturday/Sunday starter. On April 1, Bobb shutout the No. 24 San Diego Toreros across 7.1 innings. The right-hander struck out six and walked none en route to his fourth victory and WCC Pitcher of the Week honors. Bobb earned his second WCC Pitcher of the Week award for his first career complete game against Pepperdine on Friday. Bobb is the only pitcher in the WCC to have won the award twice this season. The Denver, Colorado native has gone at least five innings in 10 of his 12 starts and has lasted at least six innings in seven of his starts.

ARMS RACE: The Dons’ team ERA of 3.19 (161er, 453.2ip) ranks 4th in the WCC and 43rd among all DI baseball schools in the nation. The Dons’ 396 strikeouts rank first in the Conference as does their 396-to-140 strikeout-to-walk ratio. The 396-to-140 mark also ranks 15th in the nation. USF’s 2.81 walks allowed per nine innings ranks 33rd in the country, while it’s 1.21 WHIP ranks 27th. The Dons’ Friday, Saturday, and Sunday starters rank 8th, 9th, and 10th in the entire conference in ERA (Bobb 2.49, Zimmer 2.71, and Balog 2.86). The Dons are also the most awarded pitching staff in the WCC having won four individual WCC Pitcher of the Week awards (Bobb 2, Zimmer 1, Waterman 1). H20 BOY: Junior reliever Elliott Waterman earned WCC Rawlings Pitcher of the Week honors for his three save weekend against Gonzaga from April 20-22. Waterman has posted seven saves (5th in the WCC), which is now tied for first place in the all-time single season record books at USF with Patrick McGuigan. The 6-5, 230-pound lefty is 3-1 and owns a gaudy 1.38 ERA and a near-perfect 37-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 39.0 innings pitched. Waterman’s 24 appearances rank first on the team and are tied for third in the WCC. BALOG’S BULLETS: Sophomore right-hander Alex Balog has been remarkable in his second season in Green & Gold. The 2011 WCC All-Freshman honoree has allowed just 28 earned runs in 69.1 innings pitched (2.86 ERA), while striking out 50. Against then-No. 30 Gonzaga on April 21, Balog came within two outs of throwing a complete game shutout. In his last start against BYU, Balog went 7.2 shutout innings en route to his third win of the season. Although the sophomore is only 3-3 on the year, he has been nearly impossible to hit amassing a remarkable .216 batting average against. NIK’S NUMBERS: Senior Nik Balog’s 35 RBIs lead the team this season and ranks fifth in the entire WCC. The first baseman has 16 extra base hits this season, first on the team. The elder Balog has heated up lately, tallying 18 RBIs in the last 15 games, including a season-high five against LMU on April 14. Defensively, Balog has been nearly perfect at first base, amassing a pristine .995 fielding percentage (384 put outs and 27 assists against just two errors). The Saratoga, Calif. native entered the 2012 season ranked second all-time in put outs at USF. Balog cemented his place in Dons history by recording 502 put outs - most all-time in a single season. FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Four-year senior Mason Morioka entered the 2012 season without a collegiate home run to his name. That changed on Opening Day, as Morioka took a 2-1 pitch from San Jose State reliever Kyle Hassna deep over the left field fence in the top of the ninth, to lengethen the Dons lead to 4-0. Morioka has started in 48 of the Dons’ 52 games this season all behind the plate and is San Francisco’s fifth-leading hitter with a .264 batting average. Morioka also ranks second on the team with 27 bases on balls and third with a .374 on-base percentage.

SACRIFICE: Second baseman Jason Mahood’s 18 sacrifice bunts rank fourth in the entire nation. Mahood came alive in the three-game series against LMU from April 13-15, racking up seven RBIs and going 5-for-13 (.385). Mahood’s 25 RBIs rank second on the team. The second baseman’s defense has been stellar once again, as the junior owns a .990 fielding percentage. SEEING CLEARLY: Adam Clear’s second 10-game hitting streak this season came to an end with an 0-for-3 day at the plate on April 24 against UC Davis. Clear’s previous 10-game streak was snapped after an 0-for-3 day on March 15 in the series opener against Hawaii. During the most recent streak, Clear had four multi-hit games, including two three-hit efforts. The senior shortstop is second on the team with a .308 batting average and is tied for the team lead with 12 doubles. HINKLE’S HELP: Junior reliever Haden Hinkle has been one of the most dominant right-handed arms out of the bullpen for USF this year. Hinkle’s .179 batting average against rank first on the entire staff for an RHP. (24 hits in 35.2 innings pitched). The righty from Madera, CA is 2-1 on the season in 21 appearances. CHAVEZ CRUSHES: Senior DH/C Matt Chavez leads the team with five long flys on the season and a .430 slugging percentage. The designated hitter has 17 RBIs in just 100 at-bats. In fact, nine of Chavez’s 24 hits this season have gone for extra bases and the senior has earned five consecutive starts in the last five games.

CECILIO’S COME UP: Freshman Christian Cecilio notched his first collegiate victory in his second career start at USF, which came against Missouri on February 26 and helped complete the three-game series sweep of the Tigers. The left-hander was great against Fresno State on March 11, allowing one unearned run in 5.2 innings pitched. The San Jose, CA native has started 13 games on the season, which is the most of any Dons’ pitcher.
FINE FRESHMAN: Freshman DH Brendan Hendriks has performed well for the Dons in his first go around, hitting .306 with an impressive .364 on-base percentage. The Canadian has started in 27 games this season primarily as the designated hitter against right-handed pitchers.
REMASTERED: Senior lefty Jordan Remer has pitched well this season despite his 6.49 ERA as he owns a remarkable .157 batting average against (1st on the team) in addition to 33 strikeouts in just 26.1 innings pitched. Remer came up clutch in Sunday’s series finale against Gonzaga on April 22, stranding runners on second and third with just one out in the eighth inning.
SWEEPING UP: The Dons put together a 16-5 WCC record and won the conference last year due in large part to four separate three-game series sweeps of their WCC rivals, including Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara, and Portland. So far this season, USF has swept two three-game series (vs. Missouri and vs. No. 30 Gonzaga).
giarratano makes history Head Coach Nino Giarratano surpassed Legend of The Hilltop, Dante Benedetti, with 374 coaching victories in WCC history with a 6-5 win over Northridge on March 2, 2012. Giarratano is now USF’s All-Time leader in coaching victories and now owns sole possesion of sixth place on the All-Time WCC list.
