CAPTAIN AMERICA
Junior pitcher Kyle Zimmer was named a second team AllAmerican in Baseball America’s college preseason poll. The right-hander became the first Don to be named a preseason All-American since Tagg Bozied in 2000. More recently, Zimmer was named to the 60-Man Midseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List on May 1. Zimmer had a terrific March, tossing back-to-back compete game shutouts against Hawaii and UCSB. Against the Rainbows, Zimmer stuck out 11 and allowed only three hits en route to his first win of the 2012 season. On March 24, Zimmer blanked the Gauchos, striking out nine and walking only one to propel the Dons to a 2-0 victory. Zimmer has been equally impressive in April, going at least 7.0 innings in each of his four starts against WCC opponents, goign 2-1. Against No. 30 Gonzaga, Zimmer went 8.0 strong innings, striking out 10 and walking only one en route to his fourth victory of the season. Against BYU, the righty pitched 7.0 innings allowing just one run, while striking out 10 and walking only two. On the season, Zimmer is 4-3 record with a 2.71 ERA. The La Jolla, Calif., native leads the WCC in shutouts (2), strikeouts (85), and strikeouts per nine innings (10.02). Zimmer’s three complete games rank third, while his 2.71 ERA ranks 10th. Zimmer has shown exceptional control on the mound issuing only 13 walks in 76.1 innings pitched and ranks 17th in the nation with a 85-to-13 strikeoutto-walk ratio. H20 BOY: Junior reliever Elliott Waterman earned WCC Rawlings Pitcher of the Week honors for his 3 save weekend against Gonzaga. Waterman has been stellar for the Dons in 2012, posting seven saves (5th in the WCC), which is now tied for first place in the all-time single season record books at USFwith Patrick McGuigan. The 6-5, 230-pound lefty is 3-1 and owns a gaudy 1.09 ERA and a near-perfect 34-to-3 strikeoutto-walk ratio in 33.0 innings pitched. Waterman’s 22 appearances rank first on the team and are tied for third in the WCC. JUSTIN’S TIME: College of San Mateo transfer Justin Maffei has been the Dons hottest hitter in 2012. SEEING CLEARLY: Adam Clear’s second 10-game hitting streak this season came to an end with an 0-for-3 day at the plate on April 24 against UC Davis. Clear’s previous 10-game streak was snapped after an 0-for-3 day on March 15 in the series opener against Hawaii. During the most recent streak, Clear had four multi-hit games, including two three-hit efforts, and raised his batting average .24 points from .293 to his current .317 mark. The senior shortstop is second on the team with a .318 average and leads the squad with 11 doubles. BALOG’S BULLETS: Sophomore right-hander Alex Balog has been remarkable in his second season in Green & Gold. The 2011 WCC All-Freshman honoree has allowed just 18 earned runs in 63.2 innings pitched (2.54 ERA), while striking out 49. Against then-No. 30 Gonzaga on April 21, Balog came within two outs of throwing a complete game shutout. In his last start against BYU, Balog went 7.2 shutout innings en route to his third win of the season. Although the sophomore is only 3-3 on the year, he has been nearly impossible to hit amassing a remarkable .209 batting average against. ARMS RACE: The Dons’ team ERA of 3.15 (147er, 419.2ip) ranks 4th in the WCC. The Dons’ 377 strikeouts rank first in the Conference as does their 377-to-131 strikeout-to-walk ratio. USF has four pitchers with an ERA lower than 2.00 and eight under 3.00. In fact, the Dons’ Friday, Saturday, and Sunday starters rank 8th, 9th, and 10th in the entire conference in ERA (Balog 2.54, Bobb 2.70, Zimmer 2.71) AMAZING ABE: Redshirt sophomore Abe Bobb (5-4, 2.70 ERA) has been excellent as the Dons’ Saturday/Sunday starter. On April 1, Bobb shutout the No. 24 San Diego Toreros across 7.1 innings. The right-hander struck out six and walked none en route to his fourth victory and WCC Pitcher of the Week honors. Bobb’s five wins rank first on the team. The Denver, Colorado native has gone at least five innings in nine of his 11 starts and has lasted at least six innings in six of his starts. Bobb has shown impressive control of all of his pitches racking up a 50to-12 strikeout-to-walk ratio. FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Four-year senior Mason Morioka entered the 2012 season without a collegiate home run to his name. That changed on Opening Day, as Morioka took a 2-1 pitch from San Jose State reliever Kyle Hassna deep over the left field fence in the top of the ninth, to lengethen the Dons lead to 4-0. Morioka has started in 45 of the Dons’ 48 games this season all behind the plate and is San Francisco’s sixth-leading hitter with a .265 batting average. Morioka also ranks second on the team with 27 bases on balls and third with an .382 on-base percentage. NIK’S NUMBERS: Senior Nik Balog’s 32 RBIs lead the team this season and ranks fifth in the entire WCC. The first baseman has 12 extra base hits this season, second on the team. The elder Balog has heated up lately, tallying 16 RBIs in the last 13 games, including a season-high five against LMU on April 14. Defensively, Balog has been nearly perfect at first base, amassing a pristine .995 fielding percentage (345 put outs and 24 assists against just two errors). The Saratoga, Calif. native entered the 2012 season ranked second all-time in put outs at USF. Balog cemented his place in Dons history by recording 502 put outs - most all-time in a single season.

SACRIFICE: Second baseman Jason Mahood’s 16 sacrifice bunts rank fourth in the entire nation. Mahood came alive in the three-game series against LMU from April 13-15, racking up seven RBIs and going 5-for-13 (.385). Mahood’s 24 RBIs rank second on the team. The second baseman’s defense has been stellar once again, as the junior owns a .995 fielding percentage. HINKLE’S HELP: Junior reliever Haden Hinkle has been one of the most dominant right-handed arms out of the bullpen for USF this year. Hinkle threw 3.1 hitless innings against Fresno State in San Francisco’s 6-1 win on March 11. Hinkle’s .149 batting average against rank first on the entire staff. The righty from Madera, CA has allowed only 18 hits in 33.1 innings pitched. CHAVEZ CRUSHES: Senior DH/C Matt Chavez leads the team with five long flys on the season. The designated hitter ranks second on the squad with a .448 slugging percentage and has 15 RBIs in just 87 at-bats. In fact, nine of Chavez’s 20 hits this season have gone for extra bases. CECILIO’S COME UP: Freshman Christian Cecilio notched his first collegiate victory in his second career start at USF, which came against Missouri on February 26 and helped complete the three-game series sweep of the Tigers. The left-hander was great against Fresno State on March 11, allowing one unearned run in 5.2 innings pitched. The San Jose, CA native has started 12 games on the season, which is the most of any Dons’ pitcher. Cecilio owns an impressive 30-to-12 strikeout-to-walk ratio. REMASTERED: Senior lefty Jordan Remer has pitched well this season despite his 6.75 ERA as he owns a remarkable .157 batting average against in addition to 32 strikeouts in just 25.1 innings pitched. Remer came up clutch in Sunday’s series finale against Gonzaga on April 22, stranding runners on second and third with just one out in the eighth inning. FINE FRESHMAN: Freshman DH Brendan Hendriks has performed well for the Dons in his first go around, hitting .304 with an impressive .354 on-base percentage. The Canadian has started in 26 games this season primarily as the designated hitter against right-handed pitchers. LOVELY DAY: Senior right-hander Cameron Love has been one of the first arms out of the bullpen for Coach Giarratano in 2012. Love’s stingy 1.59 ERA ranks third on the team.

ZIMMER BROS.: Kyle Zimmer is joined this year by his younger brother, Bradley, who has started in 35 of the Dons’ 48 games this year. Both Zimmers played their high school ball at La Jolla High School in San Diego, California. The promising young right fielder leads all freshman in starts, at-bats, doubles, triples, RBI, and extra base hits. SWEEPING UP: The Dons put together a 16-5 WCC record and won the conference last year due in large part to four separate three-game series sweeps of their WCC rivals, including Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara, and Portland. So far this season, USF has swept two three-game series (vs. Missouri and vs. No. 30 Gonzaga).
giarratano makes history Head Coach Nino Giarratano surpassed Legend of The Hilltop, Dante Benedetti, with 374 coaching victories in WCC history with a 6-5 win over Northridge on March 2, 2012. Giarratano is now USF’s All-Time leader in coaching victories and now owns sole possesion of sixth place on the All-Time WCC list.

Over their last 10 games, the Waves are 6-4, including series wins over Portland and Santa Clara, where they took two of three. On Tuesday, Pepperdine lost an extrainning battle against Cal Poly, 2-1. The Waves are led offensively by second baseman Joe Sever (.370/.447/.962). On the mound, Jon Moscot (4-4, 3.11) leads the Waves with an impressive K:BB ratio of 70:15. LAST TIME VS. PEPPERDINE: USF swept the 2011 series at Bendetti Diamond - 3-2, 7-2, and 8-6. In the Sunday finale, Pete Lavin went 3-for-5 with three RBI and Stephen Yarrow went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Cameron Love earned the win, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings in relief of Jordan Remer. In the 2009 series, the Dons took two out of three games, winning the first game in convincing fashion, 15-1 and the finale 4-2.
