THIS WEEK: The Dons only game this week takes place on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. against No. 12 Stanford in a non-conference tilt. San Francisco travels south down I-280 to Palo Alto, to face the Cardinal for the first time since defeating Stanford, 5-1, on March 29, 2010. Haden Hinkle earned the win in relief of Jordan Remer, while Derek Poppert and Stephen Yarrow combined to go 5-for-7 with 5 RBI in the Dons’ triumph. WEEK THAT WAS: The Dons turned in a perfect 4-0 week, defeating Pacific on Tuesday before sweeping Santa Clara in a three-game WCC set. San Francisco has now won four of its last five series, including three-game sweeps over then-No. 30 Gonzaga and Santa Clara. The Dons received remarkable pitching efforts from preseason All-American Kyle Zimmer on Friday (7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 11 K, 2 BB) and two-time WCC Pitcher of the Week award winner, Abe Bobb, on Sunday (7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 9 K, 0 BB). LOOKING AHEAD: After playing Stanford, the Dons will take on Saint Mary’s in the final three games of the 2012 season. The Gaels currently rank 8th in the WCC with a 7-14 record in conference play. GOLDEN SPIKES WATCH LIST: Junior RHP Kyle Zimmer was named to the 60Man Midseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List last week. The La Jolla, Calif., native leads the WCC in shutouts (2), strikeouts (96), and strikeouts per nine innings (10.37) and ranks eighth in ERA (2.59). SCOUTING THE CARDINAL: No. 12-ranked Stanford enters Tuesday’s contest with a 32-14 overall record and 14-10 Pac-12 mark (4th in conference). The Cardinal are 6-4 in their last 10 games, including a three-game sweep over Washington State last weekend. The Cardinal are hitting .292 as a team, led offensively by Cap Cod Batting Champion 3B Stephen Piscotty (.344, 65 H, 36 R, 5 HR, 50 RBI, .513 SLG, .432 OBP) and 1B Brian Ragira (.327, 65 H, 28 R, 3 HR, 41 RBI, .427 SLG, .364 OBP). On the mound, the Cardinal are led by projected No. 1 overall pick, Mark Appel (8-1, 2.68 ERA, 94.0 IP, 78 H, 95 K, 21 BB). The Cardinal rank third in the Pac-12 in hitting (.292), third in pitching (3.26), and ninth in fielding (.965). Stanford’s closer, AJ Vanegas, ranks 7th in the conference with a 2.47 ERA in 47.1 IP. Austin Wilson ranks third in runs (48), Piscotty ranks third in RBI (50), and Appel ranks first in strikeouts (95). LAST TIME VS. STANFORD: The last meeting between Stanford and USF came on March 29, 2010 and went San Francisco’s way, 5-1. RHP Haden Hinkle earned the win in relief of Jordan Remer (Tuesday’s probable starter), while SS Derek Poppert and 3B Stephen Yarrow combined to go 5-for-7 with 5 RBI. LAST THREE SEASONS: The two Bay Area teams have met just twice in the past three seasons, each winning one game. USF won the last meeting, but Stanford took the 2009 contest, 12-4. CAPTAIN AMERICA: In what could have been his last start at Benedetti Diamond on Friday, junior RHP Kyle Zimmer dazzled over 7.0 innings. The right-hander struck out 11 and walked only two en route to his fifth win of the season. The La Jolla, Calif., native has been touted as a first round draft pick in this year’s MLB draft. Before the 2012 season started, Zimmer was named a second team AllAmerican in Baseball America’s college preseason poll. The right-hander became the first Don to be named a preseason All-American since Tagg Bozied in 2000. Zimmer was named to the 60-Man Midseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List on May 1. Zimmer had a terrific March, tossing back-to-back compete game shutouts against Hawaii and UCSB. Against the Rainbows, Zimmer stuck out 11 and allowed only three hits en route to his first win of the 2012 season. On March 24, Zimmer blanked the Gauchos, striking out nine and walking only one to propel the Dons to a 2-0 victory. The righty has been equally impressive in April, going at least 7.0 innings in each of his four starts against WCC opponents, going 2-1. Against No. 30 Gonzaga, Zimmer went 8.0 strong innings, striking out 10 and walking only one en route to his fourth victory of the season. Against BYU, the righty pitched 7.0 innings allowing just one run, while striking out 10 and walking only two. Zimmer is 5-3 with a 2.59 ERA this season. Zimmer leads the WCC in shutouts (2), strikeouts (96), and strikeouts per nine innings (10.37). His three complete games rank second, while his 2.59 ERA ranks 7th, and his .226 batting average against ranks 6th. The 6-4, 220-pound righty has shown exceptional control on the mound issuing only 15 walks in 83.1 innings pitched and ranks 19th in the nation with an

JUSTIN’S TIME: College of San Mateo transfer Justin Maffei had one of his best weeks of the season last week. The junior went 6-for-13 (.462) with four runs and six RBI. Maffei added three doubles, one triple, and one home run, racking up 14 total bases in four games. In addition the speedster also stole three bases to increase his WCC lead to 24. The CF ranks first on the team in hits (62), runs (45), total bases (89), on-base pct. (.465), hit by pitch (17), and steals (24). In addition, Maffei ranks 2nd in walks (34), 2nd in on-base pct. (.465), 3nd in runs scored (45), on-base percentage (.461), 6th in total bases (89), 8th in hits (62), 8th in doubles (13), and 9th in slugging (.471) in the WCC. Justin ranks 9th all-time in single season steals in Dons’ history ahead of Jonnie Knoble (23 in 2007) AMAZING ABE: Redshirt sophomore Abe Bobb (7-4, 2.38 ERA) has been excellent as the Dons’ Saturday/Sunday starter. On April 1, Bobb shutout the No. 24 San Diego Toreros across 7.1 innings. The right-hander struck out six and walked none en route to his fourth victory and WCC Pitcher of the Week honors. Bobb earned his second WCC Pitcher of the Week award for his first career complete game against Pepperdine on May 4. Bobb is the only pitcher in the WCC to have won the award twice this season. The Denver, Colorado native has gone at least five innings in 11-of-13 starts and has lasted at least six innings in eight of his starts. In his most recent outing against Santa Clara on May 13, Bobb allowed one earned run across 7.0 innings, striking out a season- and career-high nine. The performance marked the sixth time in 13 starts that Bobb has not issued a single base on balls. ARMS RACE: The Dons’ team ERA of 3.16 (169 ER, 480.2 IP) ranks 3rd in the WCC and 36th among all DI baseball schools in the nation. The Dons’ 425 strikeouts rank first in the Conference as does their 425-to-147 strikeout-to-walk ratio. The 425-to-147 mark also ranks 16th in the nation. USF’s 2.81 walks allowed per nine innings ranks 25th in the country, while it’s 1.20 WHIP ranks 23rd. The Dons’ Friday and Sunday starters rank 8th and 6th in the entire conference in ERA (Bobb 2.38, Zimmer 2.59). The Dons are also the most awarded pitching staff in the WCC having won four individual WCC Pitcher of the Week awards (Bobb 2, Zimmer 1, Waterman 1). H20 BOY: Junior reliever Elliott Waterman earned WCC Rawlings Pitcher of the Week honors for his three save weekend against Gonzaga from April 20-22. Waterman has posted seven saves (5th in the WCC), which is now tied for first place in the all-time single season record books at USF with Patrick McGuigan. The 6-5, 230-pound lefty is 4-1 and owns a gaudy 1.61 ERA and a near-perfect 39-to-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 44.2 innings pitched. Waterman’s 25 appearances rank first on the team and are tied for fourth in the WCC. NIK’S NUMBERS: Senior Nik Balog’s 40 RBI lead the team this season and ranks fifth in the entire WCC. The first baseman has 19 extra base hits this season, first on the team. The elder Balog went on a tear last week, going 8-for-17 (.471) with one home run and 5 RBI. Defensively, Balog has been nearly perfect at first base, amassing a pristine .996 fielding percentage (415 put outs and 30 assists against just two errors). The Saratoga, Calif. native enters Tuesday’s game ranked second all-time in put outs at USF. Balog also is within the top 10 alltime in doubles, hits, and RBI.
