Head Coach Rex Walters A new era began April 7, 2008, when the University of San Francisco named Rex Walters head coach of the men’s basketball program. The former Kansas star and NBA veteran hit the ground running, and entering his fourth season on the Hilltop, excitement continues to build for what promises to be a memorable season. The Dons look prepared to follow Walters’ challenge: Play hard. Play smart. Play together. After a dismal 4-9 start to the 2010-11 season, USF righted the ship in dramatic fashion and ripped off 11 victories in its last 15 games to close out the regular season. The Dons posted a 10-4 slate in the challenging West Coast Conference – the program’s best league mark since 1982 – and were in contention for the team’s first WCC Regular Season Championship in nearly three decades on the final day. Highlights of the regular season included thrilling overtime triumphs against Colorado (83-81) and eventual WCC Champion Gonzaga (96-91). San Francisco qualified for its first postseason tournament since 2004 and marched to the quarterfinals of the 2011 CollegeInsider. com Postseason Tournament. Walters’ coaching pedigree began as a player, receiving tutelage from some of the game’s legendary coaches. Roy Williams at the University of Kansas and the NBA’s Chuck Daly, Larry Brown and Pat Riley all mentored Walters as a player. Walters starred for two seasons at Kansas, and in 68 starts under Williams, averaged 15.6 points per game. KU combined to go 56-12 overall and won backto-back Big Eight titles, capped by a trip to the 1993 Final Four. A two-time All-Big Eight team pick, Walters was the 1993 Big Eight Male Athlete of the Year. After graduating from Kansas in 1993 with a B.S. in education, Walters was selected by New Jersey as the 16th overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft. He went on to play seven seasons in total with the Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat. Walters and his wife, Deanna, have five children: Addison (15), Drew (13), Riley (10), Gunner (8) and welcomed Ace Jordan in July of 2008. Remarkably, USF outscored Holy Cross 42-30 in the paint, but the Crusaders out-rebounded the Dons 37-24 and swatted 10 shots. Holy Cross committed a whopping 28 turnovers and the Dons scored 31 points off those miscues. QUOTING WALTERS: “It’s really disappointing. Bottom line is allowing them to shoot 58 percent from the floor means we didn’t do the job defensively. We forced them into a ton of turnovers, but they made too many shots. Our effort was good, but our execution wasn’t.”

REX WALTERS EARNS CONTRACT EXTENSION: The University of San Francisco and head men’s basketball coach Rex Walters have agreed to a new contract which will run through the 2015-16 season. Walters coached in his 100th game at USF when the Dons opened play in the 2011 Carrs Safeway Great Alaska Shootout with a 71-69 victory against Dartmouth. “I just want to thank Father Privett, the USF Board of Trustees, Charlie Cross and Scott Sidwell for doing this for me,” Walters said. “It is important that our current players and recruits know that there is a commitment from the University of San Francisco to keep me here to continue building an outstanding program.” San Francisco posted a remarkable campaign in 2010-11 and reached the quarterfinals of the 2011 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. The Dons posted a 10-4 slate in the challenging WCC – the program’s best league mark since 1982 – and were in contention for the team’s first WCC Regular Season Championship in nearly three decades on the final day. GREEN AND WILLIAMS EARN PRESEASON HONORS: Senior forward Rashad Green and junior guard Michael Williams earned 2011-12 Preseason All-West Coast Conference honors. Green captured All-West Coast Conference First Team honors, averaging a team-high 13.6 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game during league play. Green powered San Francisco’s run to the quarterfinals of the 2011 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, averaging 19.0 points on .567 (17-30) shooting to go along with 8.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists in three tournament contests. A 2010-11 NABC All-District 9 Second Team selection, Williams led the Dons in scoring (14.7 ppg) as a sophomore and ranked in the top-five among WCC scoring leaders while his 74 3-pointers were the second most by a Don in a single-season. Both Green and Williams were named to the 2011 National AllJesuit All-America Team.
UP NEXT FOR THE DONS: After taking on Pepperdine Thursday, December 29 in Malibu, San Francisco returns home to host Loyola Marymount in a 5:00 PM tip-off from War Memorial Gym on New Year’s Eve. The Dons vs. the Lions will be the first game broadcast live on 95.7 The GAME. CALOIARO NAMED WCC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Senior forward Angelo Caloiaro scored a career-high 29 points on 8-for11 from the floor to go along with 11 rebounds to lead USF past Pacific 79-69 last Saturday. For his efforts, Caloiaro earned his second West Coast Conference Player of the Week nod and was named to the Jesuit Spotlight Team of the Week. RASHAD GREEN HONORED: Senior forward Rashad Green collected some more hardware after averaging 17.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game at the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. Green was named to the Shootout AllTournament squad and the Jesuit Spotlight Team of the Week.

DONS TALE OF THE TAPE - 2010-11 SEason The keys to USF’s Surge: USF’s 2010-11 men’s basketball team will never be accused of using a fast start. In fact, the Dons carried a 4-9 record into its Hilltop Challenge game against Hampton December 30. From there, it was a significantly different story. These charts at right and below show the tale of the tape, measuring key statistical categories during the Dons 4-9 start compared to its 15-6 finish; USF’s non-conference slate against the 2011 West Coast Conference campaign; and finally, compares the 2009-10 season with 2010-11 regular season.

CHARTING THE DONS PROGRESS 2008-2011 SAN FRANCISCO’S EMERGENCE: USF men’s basketball continued to make strides during a remarkable 201011 season. In addition to advancing to the postseason for the first time since 2005 with the program’s inaugural berth in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, USF posted its highest overall win tally since the 1999-00 squad went 19-12. The Dons’s upswing is clear when comparing 2008-09 to 2010-11. From year one to year three, the Green and Gold is +7 in WCC victories and +8 in overall wins.

SAN FRANCISCO DONS BASKETBALL - PAGE 7 NEWCOMERS READY TO ROCK THE HILLTOP: What a difference a year makes. Last season San Francisco entered the year with just seven years of returning Division I experience, six coming under the direction of head coach Rex Walters. This season, the Dons welcome back all five starters and 10 letter-winners from a squad that posted a 19-15 record and a 10-4 West Coast Conference slate. This year the Dons welcome three newcomers to the fold - freshmen guards Chris Adams (Covina, CA) and Gavin Hoffmann (Portland, OR), and freshman forward Mark Tollefsen (Danville, CA).
NEWCOMER NOTES u Chris Adams was a two-time Division II CIF Southern First Team selection u Mark Tollefsen helped San Ramon Valley HS to a 54-7 record in final two seasons u Gavin Hoffmann earned First Team All-State honors in Oregon after senior season u Redshirt freshman center Khalil Murphy also is set for his first season in the Green & Gold
CARDIAC KIDS: USF can never be accused of being boring or even necessarily doing things the easy way. Last season, as they compiled their best West Coast Conference record (10-4) since 1982, the Dons trailed at halftime of a whopping 10 of their 14 league games. USF held just three intermission leads during league play - a 31-28 lead against Portland (1/20/11), a 31-17 advantage against San Diego (2/10/11) and a 35-30 edge at Portland (2/17/11). The Dons overcame a 35-24 halftime deficit at Santa Clara (1/8/11) and roared back from a 13-point, 39-26 shortfall against Pepperdine (2/24/11). USF IN THE JESUIT BASKETBALL SPOTLIGHT: USF is proud of its rich Jesuit heritage and the Dons will compete in no fewer than eight games against fellow Jesuit schools during the 2011-12 season. San Francisco takes on Loyola Marymount Saturday, December 31 in the third Jesuit Spotlight game of the year. USF compiled a record of 6-3 against Jesuit foes during the 2010-11 campaign. San Francisco is taking part in the Jesuit Spotlight Project for the fourth-consecutive season, using Jesuit basketball to raise awareness of the outstanding education available at the nation’s 28 Jesuit colleges and universities. Last season, Michael Williams and Rashad Green were named to the 2010-11 All-Jesuit Men’s Basketball All-American Team. For more information, log on to www.ajcunet.edu/jesuitbasketball.
