THIS WEEK: USF will return to the Hilltop this weekend for two matches loaded with nationally ranked talent as WCC action continues. The Dons will host San Diego, who is receiving votes in the national polls, Friday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m., before welcoming No. 13 Santa Clara Sunday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. NEXT WEEK: The Dons will take a road swing through Southern California next weekend, facing off against Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount. USF will face the Waves Friday, Oct. 22 at 3 p.m. in Maliibu before heading down the PCH to take on the Lions, Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m. LAST WEEK: San Francisco opened WCC action last week, dropping a 1-0 decision at Saint Mary’s. The Gaels scored a goal just within the second half to seal the Dons’ fate. Christina Moberg and Lauren Maris paced the way with two shots each. SOCCER WITHOUT BORDERS: Sunday, October 17, against Santa Clara, USF will be hosting a Soccer Without Borders day at Negoesco Stadium. The Dons will be partnering with Soccer Without Borders to help “utilize soccer as a vehicle for positive change in the lives of marginalized youth”. Fans are encouraged to bring new or gently used soccer equipment to the match against the Broncos to receive free admission to the game. Soccer Without Borders target youth who, due to a variety of complex economic and social factors, lack access to basic sporting and growth opportunities. DONS SNAP SCORELESS STREAK: Thanks to Molly Hall’s goal at Arizona, USF snapped a seven match shutout streak. During the span, USF went scoreless for 648 minutes. Prior to the streak, the Dons had not been shutout all season and were on a record scoring pace. The last time USF was shutout in four or more matches was in 2008, when the Dons suffered seven straight shutouts to close out the season. DONS OPEN HOME SLATE 4-0: Through the first four home matches of the season, USF was 4-0-0 when play on the Hilltop. The last time the Dons went 4-0 to open the home slate was in 1997. NORWEGIAN DUO EARNS NATIONAL ATTENTION: Christina Moberg and Hanna Haanes, both freshmen on the USF women’s soccer team, have been named to the Top Drawer National 100 Division I College Freshmen. Moberg and Haanes, both natives of Norway, are two of eight freshmen from the West Coast Conference to appear on this week’s list. Moberg is ranked 89th this week, while Haanes is listed at 91st. San Francisco is just one of two West Coast Conference schools to land two or more freshman in this week’s ranks. Portland leads the pack with three honors, including the highest ranked WCC representative, Erin Dees. The Pilots’ goalkeeper checks in at No. 9. Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara, Pepperdine and Saint Mary’s all have one student-athlete ranked. GOALS A PLENTY: The four goals against Santa Barbara (Aug. 29) marked the first time since a 4-0 victory over Cal State Northridge in 2006 that the Dons have scored four or more tallies against a Division I opponent. USF scored 11 goals through the opening five matches of the season. The last time USF scored 11 or more goals in the opening five matches of the season was in 2003. During the 2003 campaign, the Dons scored 17 goals in the first five matches, mainly thanks to an 8-0 victory over San Jose State. LANDMARK TO START THE SEASON: The season opening win against San Jose State marked the 175th victory in USF women’s soccer history. In 25 years on the Hilltop, The Dons have amassed a 177-283-33 record. Under the guidance of current head coach Mark Carr, San Francisco is 18-43-10.
