THIS WEEK: After falling twice to No. 16 Oregon, the Dons hope to right the ship against familiar West Coast Conference foe Loyola Marymount. The Dons fly to Los Angeles on Thursday in preparation for a three-game weekend set starting with the series opener on Friday, April 13, at 3:00 p.m. After playing game two on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., the two teams will conclude the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Last season, the Dons swept the Lions at home from April 29-May 1, including a 7-6 13-inning triumph in the series finale. WEEK THAT WAS: The Dons went 0-4 last week from April 4-7, losing by a combined five runs (three one-run losses and one two-run loss). After dropping a midweek contest to South Bay rival San Jose State, 6-5, the Dons were swept by the Portland Pilots in a three-game series. San Francisco fought to the end, never losing by more than two runs. After sweeping Portland each of the past two seasons, the Pilots returned the favor getting the better of the Dons. LOOKING AHEAD: After playing LMU, San Francisco travels to Reno, NV to face the Nevada Wolfpack before welcoming WCC rival Gonzaga for a three-game homestand starting on April 20 at 3:00 p.m. LIVE VIDEO/AUDIO/STATS: http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/usf.portal#

SCOUTING THE LIONS: The Loyola Marymount Lions are 14-14 overall and 4-2 in West Coast Conference play. The Lions lost two of three to BYU over the weekend, winning the middle game 3-2. Most recently, LMU defeated USC 8-5 in a 12-inning, 4:41 minute game. LMU is led offensively by second baseman Cullen Mahoney, who is hitting .319 with six doubles, one home run, and 13 RBIs. On the mound, Trevor Megill and Colin Welmon pace the Lions. Megill is 3-4 on the season with an impressive 2.68 ERA, while Welmon is 4-2 with a 34-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio. LAST TIME VS. LMU: USF swept LMU in a three-game series last season - 11-7, 5-4, and 7-6 - from April 29-May 1. Stephen Yarrow tallied four RBIs, Jordan Remer won game two, and Elliott Waterman improved to 5-0 with the Sunday series finale win. LAST 3 SEASONS: USF owns a 6-3 advantage over LMU over the past three seasons. Prior to last year’s sweep, San Francisco took two of three from LMU in 2010, with LMU taking two of three from USF in 2009. CAPTAIN AMERICA: Junior pitcher Kyle Zimmer was named a second team AllAmerican in Baseball America’s college preseason poll. The right-hander became the first Don to be named a preseason All-American since Tagg Bozied in 2000.
Quick Facts - entering 2012... Zimmer had a terrific March, tossing back-to-back compete game shutouts against Hawaii and UCSB. Against the Rainbows, Zimmer stuck out 11 and allowed only three hits en route to his first win of the 2012 season. This past Saturday, Zimmer blanked the Gauchos, striking out nine and walking only one to propel the Dons to a 2-0 victory. Zimmer owns a 2-3 record despite his 2.15 ERA (6th in WCC) and remarkable 60-to-7 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Zimmer’s 60 strikeouts, three complete games, and two shutouts rank first in the entire West Coast Conference. Zimmer’s .210 batting average against is good for fourth in the WCC.

ARMS RACE: The Dons’ team ERA of 3.05 (106er, 312.2ip) ranks 5th in the WCC and 24th among all NCAA DI baseball schools. The Dons’ 283 strikeouts rank first in the Conference as does their 283-to-95 strikeout-to-walk ratio. USF has eight pitchers with an ERA lower than 2.85. In fact, the Dons’ Friday, Saturday, and Sunday starters each have ERAs below 3.00. Opponents are hitting just .235 against San Francisco this year. AMAZING ABE: Redshirt sophomore Abe Bobb (4-4, 2.61 ERA) has been excellent as the Dons’ Saturday/Sunday starter. On April 1, Bobb shutout the No. 24 San Diego Toreros across 7.1 innings. The right-hander struck out six and walked none en route to his fourth victory and WCC Pitcher of the Week honors. Bobb’s four wins rank first on the team. The Denver, Colorado native has gone at least five innings in seven of his eight starts and has lasted at least six innings in five of his starts. Bobb has shown impressive control of all of his pitches racking up a 38-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio. JUSTIN’S TIME: College of San Mateo transfer Justin Maffei has been the Diamond Dons hottest hitter in 2012. The junior center fielder ranks first on the team in hits (39), runs (23), doubles (7), home runs (2), total bases (52), slugging pct. (.433), on-base pct. (.457), hit by pitch (10), and steals (15). Maffei also ranks first in the WCC in stolen bases having swiped 15 in 18 chances. Maffei also put together an eight-game hitting streak from March 9 to March 20, going 11-for-29 (.379). BALOG’S BULLETS: Sophomore right-hander Alex Balog has been remarkable in his second season in Green & Gold. The 2011 WCC All-Freshman honoree has allowed just 13 earned runs in 41.0 innings pitched (2.85 ERA), while striking out 36 and walking only 13. Although the sophomore is only 1-2 on the season, he has been nearly impossible to hit amassing a remarkable .218 batting average against. SEEING CLEARLY: Third baseman Adam Clear’s 10-game hitting streak was snapped after an 0-for-3 day on March 15 in the series opener against Hawaii. During the hitting streak, Clear was 18-for-36 (.500), including five multi-hit games, including three doubles, two RBIs, and five bases on balls. Prior to the hitting streak, the Novato, CA native was just 4-for-26 (.153). However, since February 28 against California, Clear has improved his batting average .147 points to an impressive .300. FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Four-year senior Mason Morioka entered the 2012 season without a collegiate home run to his name. That all changed on Opening Day, as Morioka took a 2-1 pitch from San Jose State reliever Kyle Hassna deep over the left field fence in the top of the ninth, to lengethen the Dons lead to 4-0. Morioka’s first collegiate homer traveled approximately 400ft and landed in the adjacent softball field on San Jose State’s campus. Morioka hit his second homer of the year, a solo shot, against Missouri, launching a 1-1 offering 60 feet up the left field netting with encapsulates Benedetti Diamond. Morioka has started in 34 of the Dons’ 36 games this season all behind the plate and is San Francisco’s fifth-leading hitter with a .243 batting average. Morioka also ranks first on the team with 21 bases on balls and fourth with an .363 onbase percentage.

H20 BOY: Junior reliever Elliott Waterman has been stellar for the Dons in 2012, recording two wins and a team-high three saves. Waterman earned a win and a save in two consecutive games against Missouri. The 6-5, 230-pound lefty owns a gaudy 1.54 ERA and a near-perfect 25-to-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 23.1 innings pitched. Waterman’s 16 appearances are tied for first on the team and third in the WCC. HINKLE’S HELP: Junior reliever Haden Hinkle threw 3.1 hitless innings against Fresno State in San Francisco’s 6-1 win on March 11. Hinkle’s 1.71 ERA and .120 batting average against rank second and first, respectively, among pitchers with at least 20.0 innings pitched. The right-hander from Madera, CA has allowed only 11 hits in 26.1 innings pitched this year. LOVELY DAY: Senior right-hander Cameron Love has been one of the first arms out of the bullpen for Coach Giarratano in 2012. So far this year, Love owns a team-best 1.10 ERA in 16.1 innings pitched, including a stingy .242 BAA. Love’s 16 appearances are tied for third place in the entire WCC. ZIMMER BROS.: Junior pitcher Kyle Zimmer is joined this year by his younger brother, Bradley, who has started in 23 of the Dons’ 27 games this year. The Zimmer brothers are one of two brother tandems on the team, joining the Balog duo. Both Zimmers played their high school ball at La Jolla High School in San Diego, California. Bradley leads all freshman in extra base hits with seven (six doubles and one triple) and RBIs with 11. CECILIO’S COME UP: Freshman Christian Cecilio notched his first collegiate victory in his second career start at USF, which came against Missouri on February 26 and helped complete the three-game series sweep of the Tigers. The left-hander was great against Fresno State on March 11, allowing one unearned run in 5.2 innings pitched. The San Jose, CA native is 1-4 on the year, due in large part to poor defense behind him. Only 15 of the 25 runs against Cecilio have been earned this season. REMASTERED: Senior lefty Jordan Remer entered the Dons record books last year, when he recorded four saves, tied for fifth all-time in the Dons’ single season books. Opposing hitters couldn’t touch the southpaw as he accumulated a .174 batting average against in 49.0 innings pitched. Remer has pitched well this season despite his 6.55 ERA as he owns a remarkable .141 batting average against in addition to 28 strikeouts in just 22.0 innings pitched. FINE FRESHMAN: Freshman DH Brendan Hendriks has performed well for the Dons in his first go around, hitting .311 (23-for-74) with an impressive .366 on-base percentage. CHAVEZ CRUSHES: Senior DH/C Matt Chavez leads USF with three long flys on the season. The designated hitter ranks second on the squad with a .379 slugging percentage and has 11 RBIs in just 66 at-bats. In fact, six of Chavez’s 13 hits this season have gone for extra bases as he also has three doubles in addition to his three home runs. Chavez has also caught behind the plate this season, a transition the senior worked on diligently throughout the offseason.

Garcia, a senior from Pamplona, Spain experienced a great first year in Green & Gold after transferring from Colby CC in Kansas. Garcia’s .318 batting average ranked third on the Dons last year. Mahood, a redshirt-junior from San Rafael, CA started 56 of the Dons’ 57 games last year. “Hoody” as he’s referred to by his teammates, committed only two errors on the year en route to a sterling .992 fielding percentage. THE GOLDEN GOOSE: Freshman reliever Logan West has eight strikeouts in just 6.1 innings pitched. In fact, West nearly struckout four Bulldogs in one inning against Fresno State on March 10. On March 21, West registered his first collegiate victory with three innings of one-run ball in relief. BALOG BROTHERS: Senior first baseman Nik Balog and his younger brother, Alex, are key contributors to the Dons’ success in 2012. Nik entered the year as the Dons’ most accomplished hitter, ranking 10th in doubles in Dons history with 40 two-baggers. Alex earned 2011 WCC All-Freshman honors last year after going 2-2 over three starts and 16 appearances. YOU’RE OUT! Senior Nik Balog is entered the 2012 season ranked second all-time in put outs at USF. The first baseman has amassed a 1199 put outs including this year’s 199. Last season, Balog cemented his place in Dons history by recording 502 put outs - most all-time in a single season.
