The three-game series begins on Friday at Benedetti Diamond at 3:00 p.m. and pits preseason All-American Kyle Zimmer (3-3, 2.79) against LHP Tyler Olson (4-0, 2.11). Gonzaga’s starters (Olson, Gonzalez, and Hunter) combined for a 2-0 record with eight strikeouts, eight walks, and an ERA of 2.11 across 21.1 innings pitched. In the Sunday finale, Hunter tossed a complete game, allowing just one earned run. LAST TIME VS. GONZAGA: USF took two-of-three games from Gonzaga in the series that decided the eventual 2011 WCC Champion. San Francisco would win the final game of the 2011 regular season and the WCC Title by a score of 4-2. LAST THREE SEASONS: Gonzaga owns a 6-4 advantage over the last three seasons. Prior to the Dons taking two-of-three last season, the Bulldogs took the 2010 series two games to one, and the 2009 four-game series three games to one. CAPTAIN AMERICA: Junior pitcher Kyle Zimmer was named a second team AllAmerican in Baseball America’s college preseason poll. The right-hander became the first Don to be named a preseason All-American since Tagg Bozied in 2000.
Quick Facts - entering 2012... Zimmer had a terrific March, tossing back-to-back compete game shutouts against Hawaii and UCSB. Against the Rainbows, Zimmer stuck out 11 and allowed only three hits en route to his first win of the 2012 season. On March 24, Zimmer blanked the Gauchos, striking out nine and walking only one to propel the Dons to a 2-0 victory. Zimmer owns a 3-3 record despite his 2.79 ERA and remarkable 65-to-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Zimmer’s 65 strikeouts, three complete games, and two shutouts rank first in the entire West Coast Conference. Zimmer’s .221 batting average against is good for eighth in the WCC.

JUSTIN’S TIME: College of San Mateo transfer Justin Maffei has been the Dons hottest hitter in 2012. The center fielder ranks first on the team in hits (46), runs (31), doubles (7), home runs (3), total bases (62), slugging pct. (.459), on-base pct. (.477), hit by pitch (11), and steals (16). Maffei also ranks first in the WCC in stolen bases having swiped 16 in 20 chances. In addition, Maffei ranks 2nd in on-base percentage (.479), 5th in bases on balls (23), and 10th in total bases (62), and SLG(.470). ARMS RACE: The Dons’ team ERA of 3.47 (134er, 347.2ip) ranks 5th in the WCC. The Dons’ 311 strikeouts rank first in the Conference as does their 311-to-116 strikeout-to-walk ratio. USF has FOUR pitchers with an ERA lower than 2.00 and seven under 3.00. In fact, the Dons’ Friday, Saturday, and Sunday starters each have ERAs below 3.25. Opponents are hitting just .239 against San Francisco this year. AMAZING ABE: Redshirt sophomore Abe Bobb (4-4, 2.85 ERA) has been excellent as the Dons’ Saturday/Sunday starter. On April 1, Bobb shutout the No. 24 San Diego Toreros across 7.1 innings. The right-hander struck out six and walked none en route to his fourth victory and WCC Pitcher of the Week honors. Bobb’s four wins rank first on the team. The Denver, Colorado native has gone at least five innings in eight of his nine starts and has lasted at least six innings in five of his starts. Bobb has shown impressive control of all of his pitches racking up a 42-to-9 strikeout-to-walk ratio. BALOG’S BULLETS: Sophomore right-hander Alex Balog has been remarkable in his second season in Green & Gold. The 2011 WCC All-Freshman honoree has allowed just 17 earned runs in 47.2 innings pitched (3.21 ERA), while striking out 41. Although the sophomore is only 1-3 on the season, he has been nearly impossible to hit amassing a remarkable .210 batting average against. Balog worked his way into the Saturday starter role just three weeks into the 2012 season. SEEING CLEARLY: Adam Clear is currently riding a seven-game hitting streak entering Friday’s game. Clear is 10-for-28 (.357) since April 7th against Portland. Earlier in the season, Clear’s 10-game hitting streak was snapped after an 0-for-3 day on March 15 in the series opener against Hawaii. During the hitting streak, Clear was 18-for-36 (.500), including five multi-hit games, including three doubles, two RBIs, and five bases on balls. Since February 28 against California, Clear has improved his batting average .154 points to an impressive .307. FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Four-year senior Mason Morioka entered the 2012 season without a collegiate home run to his name. That changed on Opening Day, as Morioka took a 2-1 pitch from San Jose State reliever Kyle Hassna deep over the left field fence in the top of the ninth, to lengethen the Dons lead to 4-0. Morioka has started in 38 of the Dons’ 40 games this season all behind the plate and is San Francisco’s seventh-leading hitter with a .242 batting average. Morioka also ranks first on the team with 25 bases on balls and third with an .363 on-base percentage. BATTED IN: Senior Nik Balog’s 25 RBIs lead the team this season. The first baseman has heated up lately, tallying 11 RBIs in the last eight games, including a season-high five against LMU on April 14.

H20 BOY: Junior reliever Elliott Waterman has been stellar for the Dons in 2012. The 6-5, 230-pound lefty is 3-0 with a teamhigh three saves. Waterman earned a win and a save in two consecutive games against Missouri in the second week of the season. “Water” owns a gaudy 1.35 ERA and a near-perfect 28to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 26.2 innings pitched. Waterman’s 17 appearances rank second on the team and are tied for fifth in the WCC. UP THE MIDDLE: The Dons return both of their starting middle infielders from a year ago in shortstop Aritz Garcia and second baseman Jason Mahood. Mahood came alive in the three-game series against LMU, racking up seven RBIs and going 5-for-13 (.385). “Hoody” has raised his batting average .27 points since the start of April and is now hitting .238 on the season. Mahood’s nine doubles and 18 RBIs rank first and second on the team, respectively. The second baseman’s defense has been stellar once again, as the junior owns a .994 fielding percentage. HINKLE’S HELP: Junior reliever Haden Hinkle threw 3.1 hitless innings against Fresno State in San Francisco’s 6-1 win on March 11. Hinkle’s .139 batting average against rank first on the entire staff. The right-hander from Madera, CA has allowed only 14 hits in 28.1 innings pitched this year. LOVELY DAY: Senior right-hander Cameron Love has been one of the first arms out of the bullpen for Coach Giarratano in 2012. Love’s stingy 1.59 ERA ranks third on the team and his 17 appearances are tied for fifth in the WCC. Love’s two saves also rank second on the team behind only Waterman’s three. ZIMMER BROS.: Junior pitcher Kyle Zimmer is joined this year by his younger brother, Bradley, who has started in 31 of the Dons’ 40 games this year. The Zimmer brothers are one of two brother tandems on the team, joining the Balog duo. Both Zimmers played their high school ball at La Jolla High School in San Diego, California. The promising young right fielder leads all freshman in starts, at-bats, doubles, triples, RBI, and extra base hits. CECILIO’S COME UP: Freshman Christian Cecilio notched his first collegiate victory in his second career start at USF, which came against Missouri on February 26 and helped complete the three-game series sweep of the Tigers. The left-hander was great against Fresno State on March 11, allowing one unearned run in 5.2 innings pitched. The San Jose, CA native has started 10 games on the season, which is the most of any Dons’ pitcher. Cecilio owns an impressive 23-to-12 strikeout-to-walk ratio. REMASTERED: Senior lefty Jordan Remer entered the Dons record books last year, when he recorded four saves, tied for fifth all-time in the Dons’ single season books. Opposing hitters couldn’t touch the southpaw as he accumulated a .174 batting average against in 49.0 innings pitched. Remer has pitched well this season despite his 7.03 ERA as he owns a remarkable .163 batting average against in addition to 31 strikeouts in just 24.1 innings pitched. Opposition is hitting just .163 against the lefty. FINE FRESHMAN: Freshman DH Brendan Hendriks has performed well for the Dons in his first go around, hitting .325 (27-for-83) with an impressive .370 on-base percentage. The Canadian has started in 21 games this season primarily as the designated hitter against right-handed pitchers.

CHAVEZ CRUSHES: Senior DH/C Matt Chavez is tied for the team lead with three long flys on the season. The designated hitter ranks second on the squad with a .405 slugging percentage and has 13 RBIs in just 74 at-bats. In fact, seven of Chavez’s 15 hits this season have gone for extra bases. Chavez has also caught behind the plate this season, a transition the senior worked on diligently throughout the offseason. THE GOLDEN GOOSE: Freshman reliever Logan West has nine strikeouts in just 7.1 innings pitched. In fact, West nearly struckout four Bulldogs in one inning against Fresno State on March 10. On March 21, West registered his first collegiate victory with three innings of one-run ball in relief. BALOG BROTHERS: Senior first baseman Nik Balog and his younger brother, Alex, are key contributors to the Dons’ success in 2012. Nik entered the year as the Dons’ most accomplished hitter, ranking 10th in doubles in Dons history with 40 two-baggers. Alex earned 2011 WCC All-Freshman honors last year after going 2-2 over three starts and 16 appearances. YOU’RE OUT! Senior Nik Balog is entered the 2012 season ranked second all-time in put outs at USF. The first baseman has amassed a 1199 put outs including this year’s 286. Last season, Balog cemented his place in Dons history by recording 502 put outs - most all-time in a single season. SWEEPING UP: The Dons put together a 16-5 WCC record and won the conference last year due in large part to four separate three-game series sweeps of their WCC rivals, including Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara, and Portland.
