THIS WEEK: The Dons fell to the Nevada Wolf Pack on Tuesday afternoon, 7-3. Junior transfer Andrew Pulido was saddled with the loss in his USF debut. Ted LeMaster’s went 1-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored, and a solo home run. LeMasters now shares a team lead in runs scored (4), home runs (1), and RBI (3). The Dons now prepare for their first-ever weekend showdown against Big 12 power Missouri, which marks the return of ex-Dons pithing coach Matt Hobbs. Hobbs served as the Diamond Dons pitching coach during the 2010 season, where his staff ranked fourth in the WCC in ERA. Missouri finished the 2011 season with a 27-32 record under head coach Tim Jamieson who is entering his 18th season at the helm for the Tigers. LOOKING AHEAD: After wrapping up the weekend set against Missouri, San Francisco will drive across the Bay Bridge to take on East Bay rival California on February 28. The Dons split a pair of games with Cal last season, winning 7-6 on 3/16/11 and losing 4-0 on 3/29/11. From there, USF heads to San Diego State to play in the Aztec Invitiational tournament. USF will play four games in four days at Tony Gwynn Stadium on the San Diego State campus. 2012 DANTE BENEDETTI CLASSIC: USF will meet league rival University of San Diego in the Seventh Annual Dante Benedetti Baseball Classic on Saturday, March 31st, 2012 at 10:30 AM at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Tickets for the DBC are $10 each and can be purchased online at http://dantebenedetticlassic.eventbrite.com. SCOUTING THE TIGERS: Missouri enters the series against USF coming off a series win against Auburn. The Tigers dropped their season opener then won the next two to take the series. Missouri finished in 8th place (11-15) in 2011 in the Big 12 Conference. Dane Opel and Brannon Champagne led the Tigers offensively and come into the series hitting .500 (6-for-12) and .455 (5-for-11), respectively. Opel already has two home runs and four RBI on the young 2012 season. LAST TIME VS. MISSOURI: The Tigers and Dons have never met before. This weekend’s series marks the first-ever matchup between the two schools. PITCHING COACH, MATT HOBBS: Matt Hobbs, a Missouri alum has returned to his alma mater and is now in his second season Mizzou’s pitching coach. Last year, three of his pitchers were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft and he coached All-Big 12 Freshman Team honoree Rob Zastryzny.Hobbs spent the 2010 season as the pitching coach at the University of San Francisco, where his staff ranked fourth in the West Coast Conference in ERA and was second in the league in fewest walks per nine innings.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: Junior pitcher Kyle Zimmer was named a second team AllAmerican in Baseball America’s college preseason poll. The right-hander became the first San Francisco Don to be named a preseason All-American since Tagg Bozied in 2000. The La Jolla, CA native burst onto the national scene last season when he outdueled then No. 12 UCLA and phenom Gerrit Cole, shutting out the Bruins, 3-0, while striking out 11 in the first game of the NCAA Los Angeles Regional. Zimmer four-hit the Bruins and walked none to propel the Dons to their first Regional win since 2006. Zimmer opened the season on a pitch count and went four scoreless innings, striking out three and walking none against San Jose State. FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Four-year senior Mason Morioka entered the 2012 season without a collegiate home run to his name. That all changed on Opening Day, as Morioka took a 2-1 pitch from San Jose State reliever Kyle Hassna deep over the left field fence in the top of the ninth, to lengethen the Dons lead to 4-0. Morioka’s first collegiate homer traveled approximately 400ft and landed in the adjacent softball field on San Jose State’s campus. AMAZING ABE: Redshirt sophomore Abe Bobb was masterful in his second collegiate start as he led San Francisco past San Jose State, 5-1, Saturday afternoon at Blethen Field. Bobb went seven strong innings striking out four, and walking only one. The Denver, Colorado native settled in nicely in the later stages of the game, mixing location well, and getting first pitch strikes all afternoon. JUSTIN’S TIME: College of San Mateo junior transfer Justin Maffei put together an amazing first week in Green & Gold. The center fielder ranks first on the team in batting average (.385), hits (5), doubles (4), slugging pct. (.692), and steals (2). In addition, Maffei played an excellent center field, gunning down a runner at home plate on Tuesday against Nevada - the first outfield assist for the Dons in 2012. Maffei’s four doubles rank first in the entire WCC. GIARRATANO CLOSING IN: Head Coach Nino Giarratano is just one win shy of tying Marv Wood from Loyola Marymount for seventh place on the all-time coaching victories list in West Coast Conference History. Marv Wood sits alone in seventh place with 371 victories, while Giarratano has 370 victories including his two wins so far this season.

FRESHMAN FIRSTS: Bradley Zimmer, Brendan Hendriks, and Jourdan Weiks all recorded their first collegiate hits against Nevada on 2/21. Zimmer singled through the right side, Hendriks’ RBI single against Nevada was both his first collegiate hit and RBI, and Weiks placed a perfect bunt down the third base line against Nevada to reach first. RECORD PERFORMANCE: The 2011 USF Dons set an NCAA D-1 record last season, recording the best fielding percentage of all-time, a .985 mark. San Francisco finished first in the NCAA D-I circuit after committing just 33 errors on the year. The Green & Gold recorded 1531 putouts and 609 assists led by 2011 WCC Defensive Player of the Year, 3B Stephen Yarrow. NIKED UP: Senior first baseman Nik Balog suffered a shoulder injury on Opening Day as he slid back into first base awkwardly on a pickoff attempt. Balog entered the 2012 campaign as the cleanup hitter and also as the Dons most decorated hitter, ranking 10th in doubles in Dons all-time history. BARRY BARAGE: Redshirt senior Tom Barry has taken the place of injured Nik Balog at first base and has thrived as a starter thus far. Barry went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI in Saturday’s game against SJ State on 2/18. Barry narrowly missed out on a three-run home run, as he smashed a ball high off the center field fence at Blethen Field. Barry has also played a perfect first base, recording 29 put outs and two assists. POUR SOME WATER ON ME: Left-handed reliever Elliott Waterman put together a solid first week on the mound, allowing just one earned run in four innings of work. Waterman has a perfect 6/0 strikeout-to-walk ratio and a stingy .200 batting average against. The 6-5, 230 lb. lefty also recorded a save in the second game of the season, to share the team lead with Cameron Love. ARMS RACE: The Dons pitching staff ranks fourth in the WCC in team ERA in the early going with a 2.67 mark. USF is tied for first in saves with two with Gonzaga. HOME SWEET HOME: USF finished the 2011 campaign with an amazing 16-3 (.842) record at Bendetti Diamond. The Dons enter the season with a current 11-game home winning streak dating back to last year. The last Dons loss at home occured on April 10, 2011 against Saint Mary’s. YOU’RE OUT! Senior Nik Balog is now second all-time in put outs at USF. The first baseman has amassed a carere total of 1034 put outs. Last season, Balog cemented his place in Dons history by recording 502 put outs, most all-time in a single season. REMASTERED: Senior lefty Jordan Remer entered the Dons record books last year, when he recorded four saves, tied for fifth all-time in the Dons’ single season books. In fact, Remer did a little bit of everything on the mound for the Dons last year, appearing in 24 games and starting in four. Opposing hitters couldn’t touch the southpaw, as he accumulated a stingy .174 batting average against in 49 innings pitched.

HOT CORNER HANDOVER: For the past four years, the hot corner was home to Stephen Yarrow, who won the WCC Defensive Player of the Year award in 2011. After beginning his career as a first baseman he became one of the league’s premier third basemen and one of the program’s most decorated hitters. This year, senior incumbent Adam Clear will take over at third base for the Dons. Clear had a solid 2011 campaign, finishing second on the team with a .325 batting average. Clear raked seven doubles and slugged an impressive .423. Needless to say, San Francisco is in good hands at the hot corner for yet another year. BALOG BROTHERS: Senior first baseman Nik Balog and his younger brother, sophomore pitcher Alex Balog are expected to be big contributors to the Dons success in 2012. Nik enters the year as the Dons’ most accomplished hitter, ranking 10th in doubles in Dons history with 40 two-baggers. Alex earned 2011 WCC All-Freshman honors last year after going 2-2 over three starts and 16 appearances. MR. PERFECT: Senior catcher Mason Morioka expects to lead the Dons behind the dish this season in his fourth year in Green & Gold. Morioka finished 2011 with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, which contributed to the Dons finishing first in the entire nation in fielding percentage with a sterling .985 mark. Morioka also gunned down 46% (12-of-26) of would be basestealers. ZIMMER BROS.: Junior pitcher Kyle Zimmer is joined this year by his younger brother, Bradley Zimmer, who has started all four games of the season in right field. The Zimmer brothers are one of two brother tandems on the team, joining the Balog duo. Both Zimmers played their high school ball at La Jolla High School in San Diego, California. Bradley led his team with a .446 batting average and an equally impressive .500 slugging percentage in his senior year. Thus far, Bradley has struggled at the plate, but has played great defense, making several diving catches, including a two-out bases loaded catch in the seventh inning against Nevada on 2/21. LOVELY DAY: Senior right-hander Cameron Love enters the 2012 season as one of the first arms out of the bullpen for Coach Giarratano. Love finished the 2011 campaign with the teams’ best ERA (2.60) among pitchers with at least 10 innings pitched. Love was 1-1 in 20 appearances, sporting a remarkable .200 batting average against. Love recorded the first save of the 2012 season, coming on in relief on Opening Day, tossing three innings of shutout ball. UP THE MIDDLE: The Dons return both of their starting middle infielders from a year ago in shortstop Aritz Garcia and second baseman Jason Mahood. Garcia, a senior from Pamplona, Spain experienced a great first year in Green & Gold after transferring from Colby CC in Kansas. Garcia’s .318 batting average was good for third on the Dons last year. Mahood, a redshirt-junior from San Rafael, CA, started 56 of the Dons’ 57 games last year. “Hoody” as he’s referred to by his teammates, committed only two errors on the year en route to a sterling .992 fielding percentage.
