JUSTIN’S TIME: College of San Mateo junior transfer Justin Maffei has been the Diamond Dons hottest hitter thus far. The center fielder ranks first on the team in hits (27), runs (15), doubles (6), home runs (2), slugging pct. (.506), on-base pct. (.474), and steals (9). Maffei also ranks within the top 10 in the WCC in multiple categories including stolen bases (9 - 1st), total bases (37 - 8th), bases on balls (13 - 5th), on-base pct. (.494 - 3rd), and slugging (.521 - 8th). SEEING CLEARLY: Third baseman Adam Clear’s 10-game hitting streak was snapped after an 0-for-3 day on March 15 ain the series opener against Hawaii. During the hitting streak, Clear was 18-for-36 (.500), including five multi-hit games, including three doubles, two RBIs, and five bases on balls. Prior to the hitting streak, the Novato, CA native was just 4-for-26 (.153). However, since February 28 against California, Clear has improved his batting average a ridiculous .161 points to .314. ARMS RACE: The Dons’ team ERA of 2.60 (58er, 200.2ip) in 2012, ranks 4th in the WCC. The Dons’ 184 strikeouts are tied for first in the Conference with San Diego (180). USF’s 184-to61 strikeout-to-walk ratio also ranks first. USF has five pitchers with an ERA lower than 2.00. In fact, the Dons’ Friday, Saturday, and Sunday starters each have ERAs below 3.00. Opponents are hitting just .225 against San Francisco on the year. AMAZING ABE: Redshirt sophomore Abe Bobb (3-2, 2.14 ERA) has been excellent as the Saturday starter. Bobb’s three wins, five starts, and 33.2 innings pitched all rank first on the team. Bobb has gone at least seven innings in three of his five starts and went 6.2 innings in his most effort against Hawaii. Bobb’s 2.14 ERA ranks 10th in the WCC and his 33.2 innings pitched ranks 7th. Bobb’s three wins are tied for third in the conference and his 26 strikeouts rank 10th. FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Four-year senior Mason Morioka entered the 2012 season without a collegiate home run to his name. That all changed on Opening Day, as Morioka took a 2-1 pitch from San Jose State reliever Kyle Hassna deep over the left field fence in the top of the ninth, to lengethen the Dons lead to 4-0. Morioka’s first collegiate homer traveled approximately 400ft and landed in the adjacent softball field on San Jose State’s campus. Morioka hit his second homer of the year, a solo shot, against Missouri, launching a 1-1 offering 60 feet up the left field netting with encapsulates Benedetti Diamond. Morioka’s two homers are tied for fourth in the WCC. H20 BOY: Junior reliever Elliott Waterman has been stellar for the Dons in 2012, recording two wins and two saves, which rank second and first on the team, respectively. Waterman earned a win and a save in two consecutive games against Missouri and owns a gaudy 1.72 ERA and a near-perfect 18-to1 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 15.2 innings pitched. Waterman’s ten appearances rank third on the team. ZIMMER BROS.: Junior pitcher Kyle Zimmer is joined this year by his younger brother, Bradley, who has started in 15 of the Dons’ 17 games this year. The Zimmer brothers are one of two brother tandems on the team, joining the Balog duo. Both Zimmers played their high school ball at La Jolla High School in San Diego, California. Bradley scored a two-run triple into the right center field gap against San Francisco State on Wednesday, his first collegiate triple and third extra-base hit of the season.

CECILIO’S COME UP: Freshman Christian Cecilio notched his first collegiate victory in his second career start again Missouri on 2/26 to complete the sweep of the Tigers. The left-hander was great against Fresno State on March 11, allowing one unearned run in 5.2 innings pitched. The San Jose, CA native is 1-3 on the year, due in large part to poor defense behind him. Only eight of the 18 runs against Cecilio have been earned this season. HINKLE’S HELP: Junior reliever Haden Hinkle threw 3.1 hitless innings against Fresno State in San Francisco’s 6-1 win on March 11. Hinkle’s 0.61 ERA and .080 batting average against rank first on the Dons among all pitchers with at least 14.2 innings pitched. The right-hander from Madera, CA has allowed only four hits in 14.2 innings pitched in nine appearances. LOVELY DAY: Senior right-hander Cameron Love has been one of the first arms out of the bullpen for Coach Giarratano in 2012. Love finished the 2011 campaign with the team’s best ERA (2.60) among pitchers with at least 10 innings pitched. Love was 1-1 in 20 appearances, sporting a remarkable .200 batting average against. So far this year, Love owns a 1.35 ERA in 14.2 innings pitched, including a stingy .208 BAA. FINE FRESHMAN: Freshman DH Brendan Hendriks has performed well for the Dons in the early going, hitting .317 (13-for-41) with an impressive .396 on-base percentage. The Alberta, Canada native has as four walks and just five strikeouts. CAPTAIN CROOK: Freshman Bob Cruikshank earned his first collegiate start on March 9 against Fresno State and went 1-for-3 (.333) at the plate, while playing third base. Cruikshank started each of the next two games as well and went 5-for-12 (.417) with two RBIs and a run scored in the series. UP THE MIDDLE: The Dons return both of their starting middle infielders from a year ago in shortstop Aritz Garcia and second baseman Jason Mahood. Garcia, a senior from Pamplona, Spain experienced a great first year in Green & Gold after transferring from Colby CC in Kansas. Garcia’s .318 batting average ranked third on the Dons last year. Mahood, a redshirt-junior from San Rafael, CA started 56 of the Dons’ 57 games last year. “Hoody” as he’s referred to by his teammates, committed only two errors on the year en route to a sterling .992 fielding percentage.

HOMER HAPPY: Mason Morioka and Justin Maffei are tied for fourth in the WCC with two home runs each. Morioka also added the first Dons’ triple of the year against San Diego State in the Aztec Invitational. BALOG BROTHERS: Senior first baseman Nik Balog and his younger brother, sophomore pitcher Alex Balog are expected to be big contributors to the Dons success in 2012. Nik enters the year as the Dons’ most accomplished hitter, ranking 10th in doubles in Dons history with 40 two-baggers. Alex earned 2011 WCC All-Freshman honors last year after going 2-2 over three starts and 16 appearances.
REMASTERED: Senior lefty Jordan Remer entered the Dons record books last year, when he recorded four saves, tied for fifth all-time in the Dons’ single season books. In fact, Remer did a little bit of everything on the mound for the Dons last year, appearing in 24 games and starting in four. Opposing hitters couldn’t touch the southpaw as he accumulated a stingy .174 batting average against in 49 innings pitched. Remer has pitched well this season despite his 7.11 ERA as he owns a remarkable .150 batting average against in addition to 19 strikeouts in just 12.2 innings pitched.
SWEEPING UP: The Dons put together a 16-5 WCC record and won the conference last year due in large part to four separate three-game series sweeps of their WCC rivals including Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara, and Portland.
WEST COAST: Freshman reliever Logan West has four strikeouts in just 2.0 innings pitched. In fact, West nearly struckout four Bulldogs in one inning against Fresno State on March 10. On Wednesday, March 21, West registered his first collegiate victory with three innings of one-run ball in relief.
YOU’RE OUT! Senior Nik Balog is now second all-time in put outs at USF. The first baseman has amassed a career total of 1034 put outs. Last season, Balog cemented his place in Dons history by recording 502 put outs - most all-time in a single season.
HOME SWEET HOME: USF finished the 2011 campaign with an amazing 16-3 (.842) record at Bendetti Diamond. The Dons enter the season with a current 11-game home winning streak dating back to last year. The last Dons loss at home occured on April 10, 2011 against Saint Mary’s.
