ZIMMER BROS.: Junior pitcher Kyle Zimmer is joined this year by his younger brother, Bradley, who has started in 23 of the Dons’ 27 games this year. The Zimmer brothers are one of two brother tandems on the team, joining the Balog duo. Both Zimmers played their high school ball at La Jolla High School in San Diego, California. Bradley hit a two-run triple into the right center field gap against San Francisco State last Wednesday, his first collegiate triple and fourth extra-base hit of the season. CECILIO’S COME UP: Freshman Christian Cecilio notched his first collegiate victory in his second career start again Missouri on February 26 to complete the sweep of the Tigers. The lefthander was great against Fresno State on March 11, allowing one unearned run in 5.2 innings pitched. The San Jose, CA native is 1-3 on the year, due in large part to poor defense behind him. Only 12 of the 22 runs against Cecilio have been earned this season. HINKLE’S HELP: Junior reliever Haden Hinkle threw 3.1 hitless innings against Fresno State in San Francisco’s 6-1 win on March 11. Hinkle’s 0.53 ERA and .070 batting average against rank first on the Dons among all pitchers with at least 17.0 innings pitched. The right-hander from Madera, CA has allowed only four hits in 17.0 innings pitched this year. LOVELY DAY: Senior right-hander Cameron Love has been one of the first arms out of the bullpen for Coach Giarratano in 2012. So far this year, Love owns a 1.23 ERA in 14.2 innings pitched, including a stingy .208 BAA. Love’s 14 appearances are tied for second place in the entire WCC. REMASTERED: Senior lefty Jordan Remer entered the Dons record books last year, when he recorded four saves, tied for fifth all-time in the Dons’ single season books. Opposing hitters couldn’t touch the southpaw as he accumulated a .174 batting average against in 49.0 innings pitched. Remer has pitched well this season despite his 6.14 ERA as he owns a remarkable .130 batting average against in addition to 20 strikeouts in just 14.2 innings pitched. FINE FRESHMAN: Freshman DH Brendan Hendriks has performed well for the Dons in the early going, hitting .326 (15-for-46) with an impressive .474 on-base percentage. The Alberta, Canada native has as an equal amount of walks as he does strikeouts - five. CAPTAIN CROOK: Freshman Bob Cruikshank earned his first collegiate start on March 9 against Fresno State and went 1-for-3 (.333) at the plate while playing third base. Cruikshank started each of the next two games as well and went 5-for-12 (.417) with two RBIs and a run scored in the series. UP THE MIDDLE: The Dons return both of their starting middle infielders from a year ago in shortstop Aritz Garcia and second baseman Jason Mahood. Garcia, a senior from Pamplona, Spain experienced a great first year in Green & Gold after transferring from Colby CC in Kansas. Garcia’s .318 batting average ranked third on the Dons last year. Mahood, a redshirt-junior from San Rafael, CA started 56 of the Dons’ 57 games last year. “Hoody” as he’s referred to by his teammates, committed only two errors on the year en route to a sterling .992 fielding percentage.

THE GOLDEN GOOSE: Freshman reliever Logan West has four strikeouts in just 2.0 innings pitched. In fact, West nearly struckout four Bulldogs in one inning against Fresno State on March 10. On March 21, West registered his first collegiate victory with three innings of one-run ball in relief. BALOG BROTHERS: Senior first baseman Nik Balog and his younger brother, Alex, are key contributors to the Dons’ success in 2012. Nik entered the year as the Dons’ most accomplished hitter, ranking 10th in doubles in Dons history with 40 two-baggers. Alex earned 2011 WCC All-Freshman honors last year after going 2-2 over three starts and 16 appearances. YOU’RE OUT! Senior Nik Balog is entered the 2012 season ranked second all-time in put outs at USF. The first baseman has amassed a 1199 put outs including this year’s 199. Last season, Balog cemented his place in Dons history by recording 502 put outs - most all-time in a single season. SWEEPING UP: The Dons put together a 16-5 WCC record and won the conference last year due in large part to four separate three-game series sweeps of their WCC rivals, including Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara, and Portland. HOME SWEET HOME: USF finished the 2011 campaign with an amazing 16-3 (.842) record at Benedetti Diamond. The Dons entered the season with an 11-game home winning streak dating back to last year. Entering 2012, the last Dons loss at home occured on April 10, 2011 against Saint Mary’s.

SCOUTING THE TOREROS: San Diego enters this weekend’s series riding a six-game winning streak, including a three-game sweep over Santa Clara to open WCC play. The Toreros swept the Broncos - 6-5, 4-2, and 12-4 - to open their conference season. The Toreros are hitting a remarkable .330 on the season and are led by preseason AllAmerican, Kris Bryant (.406, 8 HRs, 33 RBI). In fact, six Toreros that have started at least 26 of San Diego’s 27 games own batting averages above .335. The Toreros lead the WCC in runs (188), hits (307), doubles (60), home runs (19), and walks (98). LAST TIME VS. SAN DIEGO: The Dons fell in a 12-8 contest on May 8, 2011. LeMasters and Connor Bernatz both homered, but Kris Bryant and Zack Kometani both drove in four runs apiece to give San Diego the series victory, 2-1. LAST THREE YEARS: The Toreros own a 6-3 advantage over the Dons over the past three years. Last year, USF won the series opener on May 6, 2011 by a score of 4-3, but San Diego bounced back winning the final pair of games - 7-5 and 12-8. In 2010, USD swept the Dons in a three game set. However, USF won the three-game series in 2009, winning the final two games of the series - 14-5 and 9-1.
