2010 USF BASEBALL SEASON HIGHLIGHTS Eight Dons Earn West Coast Conference Honors

USF had eight players that made West Coast Conference honor lists after a fourth-place finish in the WCC in 2010, which was one more than the 2009 season. Three players were named first-team, four more were selected as honorable mention and one made the all-freshman team. Only league-champion San Diego, with 10, had more total selections. Sophomore first baseman Nik Balog, junior outfielder Connor Bernatz and junior third baseman Stephen Yarrow all made first-team, while senior shortstop Derek Poppert, senior catcher Ryan Lipkin, right-handed pitcher Doug Murray and junior outfielder Pete Lavin earned honorable mention. Utility player Jason Mahood was selected to the all-freshman team.

Matt Hiserman’s Inspiring Comeback

On Feb. 13, 2010, junior right-hander Matt Hiserman was hit in the head from a line-drive off the bat of a teammate during practice. Hiserman’s injury was so traumatic, doctors not only expected him to be out for the season, but also wondered if he would be able to go back to class. He spent four days in the Intensive Care Unit after the injury and was warned against any activity that could cause further swelling of the brain. Just two months after his traumatic injury, Hiserman made his return to the mound on April 16 against Saint Mary’s. He went on to make 10 appearances, pitching a total of 41 innings, while starting three games. USF’s sports medicine and medical staff monitored Hiserman’s progress from the initial injury to his clearance to return to participation. USF baseball athletic trainer Rosie Cheng said the following about Hiserman at the time of his return. “Due to the severity of Matt’s injury, we have had his progress tracked by a team of medical professionals including our staff of Certified Athletic Trainers, a team orthopedist, a primary care concussion specialist physician, a Ear/Nose/Throat specialist, neurosurgeon, and a neurologist,” Cheng said. “Matt has worked extremely diligently to do everything in his power to come back this season, within the limitations and protocols imposed by the team of health care providers tracking his progress. His return to play was made possible by using an appropriate multi-disciplinary approach to concussion management, which ensures he is making a safe return to activity.”

Lipkin Named Semifinalist for Johnny Bench Award Senior catcher Ryan Lipkin was among the 16 semifinalists selected for the 2010 Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award, which is given out to the nation’s top catcher. He is the first Don to be named a semifinalist for the award since Steve Booth made the list in 2002.

Stephen Yarrow was a first-team All-West Coast Conference performer.

In 56 games, Lipkin hit .313 (65-for-208) with 19 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 37 RBI, 30 runs scored, and two stolen bases. On the field, he made just one error in 285 chances for a .996 fielding percentage. He allowed just six passed balls and threw out runners at a .533 clip.

Dons Earn WCC Weekly Honors

Stephen Yarrow, junior third baseman, was named WCC Player of the Week twice during the 2010 season. The first came after his play from Feb. 22-28. In three games against Cal Poly, Yarrow hit .600 (going 6-for10) with two homeruns, a double, four RBI, three walks, three runs scored and an impressive 1.300 slugging percentage. His second Player of the Week honor came after his performances from May 9-16. In three games that week, Yarrow hit .462 (6-for-13) with a double, two home runs and four RBI with a slugging percentage of 1.000. Against Portland, he smashed a three-run walk-off homerun in the ninth inning to give the Dons a 7-6 victory. The next day he hit his 16th homer. Matt Lujan, junior left-handed pitcher, was named Co-WCC Pitcher of the Week after his outing during the time of April 19-25. In his only appearance of the week, Lujan gave up just two hits and one unearned run in seven innings to lead the Dons to a 9-2 victory against Loyola Marymount. The win gave USF the series win against the Lions.

Dons Make Their Marks in the Record Book

Matt Hiserman made an inspiring return to the mound in 2010.

The 2010 season yielded nine new entries into the single-season record book and seven new entries into the career record books. Junior outfielder Pete Lavin’s 226 at-bats was the 12th most in program history. Stephen Yarrow’s 16 home run-output was the fifth best season for long-ball hitters. The junior third baseman was also 10th in the record books for slugging percentage with a mark of .635. Nik Balog’s name is now in the single-season record book twice — for doubles and putouts. The sophomore first baseman’s 20 doubles tied for third-best and his 454 putouts also ranked third. Balog wasn’t alone in the doubles category, with seniors Derek Poppert and Ryan Lipkin both notching 19 doubles for fifth-best single season marks. The Dons also made history on the mound. Senior Doug Murray’s eight wins was the fifth-best season win total and junior Garrett Luippold’s 28 appearances was the fourth most. Poppert finished his career in the top 10 of four different categories in program history. His 684 at bats is sixth most and his 207 hits total is 10th best. The shortstop is fifth in career doubles with 50 and tied for sixth in stolen base percentage with .780. Yarrow moved into fourth on the career home run list with 31 blasts. He is 29 home runs behind USF’s career leader Tagg Bozied, who hit 60 homers, but is only five behind second place Arnie Sambel. Junior Matt Lujan moved into third for total victories with a total of 18. He is only four wins behind Patrick McGuigan and Dana Hendershott, who amassed 22 wins during their time on the Hilltop. The right-handed pitcher is also third in games started with 39 and is just nine starts away from totaling the most starts in program history.

2010 MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL DRAFT Four Dons were selected in the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft. SENIOR RHP DOUG MURRAY 19th ROUND, CHICAGO WHITE SOX
Murray completed a remarkable two-year career on the Hilltop serving as the Friday starter for the Dons in 2010. The righthander posted an 8-6 record with a 3.60 ERA to go along with 70 strikeouts and ranked in the top-25 nationally among Division I leaders with just 13 walks in a team-high 105.0 innings. Murray ranked third among WCC leaders in wins (8), second in innings (105.0). The 2009 All-WCC First Team selection ranks tied for fourth on the all-time USF victories list with 17 after going 9-0 in his first season at USF. . SENIOR C RYAN LIPKIN 24th ROUND, OAKLAND ATHLETICS Lipkin wrapped up an outstanding three-year career with USF, notching career-highs in doubles (19), home runs (7) and extra-base hits (28). The 2010 Johnny Bench Award Semifinalist hit a team-high .313 and was one of just two Dons to start all 56 games for the Green and Gold. An exceptional catcher, Lipkin committed just one error for a fielding percentage of .996. . SENIOR SS DEREK POPPERT 30th ROUND, SEATTLE MARINERS
Poppert capped his career by capturing the 2010 Dante Benedetti Award presented to the USF Team MVP. A three-time all-league choice, the four-year player was an All-WCC First Team selection last season and an honorable mention pick as a freshman. Poppert hit .308 with 19 doubles, a triple, three home runs and 30 RBI to go along with 11 stolen bases. After a rugged junior defensive campaign, Poppert bounced back to key a Dons defense that ranked No. 3 nationally among Division I team leaders with a .978 fielding percentage. Poppert finished his career ranked in the top-10 at-bats (6th/684), hits (10th/207), doubles (5th/50) and RBI (T-5th/123)..

REDSHIRT SOPHOMORE MATT CHAVEZ 44th ROUND, CHICAGO WHITE SOX Chavez came on late for the Dons and emerged as one of the top righthanded relievers on the staff during West Coast Conference play. Chavez posted a 1-0 record with a 3.78 ERA, allowing seven runs in 16.2 innings to go along with a 13/3 strikeout to walk ratio.. FORMER DON SCOTT COUSINS MAKES MLB DEBUT Scott Cousins was called up to the big leagues by the Florida Marlins on September 2, 2010. Three days later, he notched his first-ever major league hit: a walk-off homer against Atlanta in the 10th inning. It was just his second big-league plate appearance. Cousins, who played for USF from 2004-2006, spent the past four seasons climbing his way through the minor leagues. The left-handed outfielder hit .285 with 49 RBI in 2010 for the Marlins’ AAA club the New Orleans Zephyrs. The Reno native was a third-round draft pick in 2006 by the Marlins after his junior year at USF. He hit .211 his first year in the minor leagues, followed by .292 in 2007, .285 in 2008 and .263 in 2009. Cousins was a first-team All-American selection his junior year at USF in addition to being named 2006 West Coast Conference Player of the Year that same season. He was a first-team All-WCC selection in 2006 and 2005, along with being named USF’s Most Valuable Player in 2006 and 2005. As a junior, Cousins played a key role in elevating the Dons to their first WCC title in 2006 and inaugural trip to the NCAA Regionals. Cousins led USF in hitting in 2006, with a .343 batting average and 46 RBI. He also pitched the third highest number of innings for the Dons in 2006. In three years with the Dons, Cousins hit .319 with 20 doubles, three triples, 15 home runs and 93 RBI and totaled a 12-8 record on the mound with a 3.21 ERA (68 ER) and struck out 142 in 190.2 innings. Cousins is the second player from the 2006 USF baseball team to make his Major League debut. Aaron Poreda made his debut for the Chicago White Sox on June 12, 2009.

ABOUT THE WEST COAST CONFERENCE

The West Coast Conference got its start back in 1952, and now enters its 59th season. In the beginning, the founders really had only one goal in mind - to create a convenient way for five Bay Area schools to play basketball. What has grown from that original vision 59 years ago is a marvelous cohesive athletics league which is competitive at the national level in 13 sports. The eight current members of the WCC span the Western United States from Canada to Mexico. Though the institutions range from the pine forests of Eastern Washington to the sun-drenched beaches of Southern California, the combined excellence in athletics and academics sets the conference apart on the national scene and draws the individual institutions together in a common mission. The WCC sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross-country, men’s and women’s golf, women’s rowing, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis and volleyball. The league was chartered by five Bay Area institutions (Pacific, Saint Mary’s, San Francisco, San Jose State and Santa Clara) as the California Basketball Association, playing

its first game on January 2, 1953. After two seasons of play under that name, the conference expanded to include Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine in 1955, and became the “West Coast Athletic Conference” in 1956. The name was shortened to “West Coast Conference” in 1989. The current full-time lineup of WCC schools has remained unchanged since 1979, making the WCC the third most stable conference in the country. Baseball began in the WCC in 1968. Five conference institutions were charter members of the baseball league, along with three associates - Pacific, UC Santa Barbara and San Jose State. The conference temporarily split from 1977-1984 into the Northern and Southern California Baseball Associations, but realigned in 1985 to include San Diego and Nevada. The Wolfpack stayed until 1991, when WCC baseball was reduced to six institutions. Gonzaga and Portland joined the WCC in 1996 after departing the Pac-10 North, to bring the league to its full complement of member institutions. The 2011 baseball campaign marks the 44th year for West Coast Conference baseball and the league will continue with the 21-game format. The team with the best regular season

league record will gain the WCC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which expanded from 48 to 64 teams in 1999. WCC members have taken part in four College World Series, including Pepperdine’s 1992 national championship squad. Loyola Marymount went to Omaha in 1986, the Waves made their first trip in 1979 and Santa Clara played in the 1962 NCAA championship game. Pepperdine (2001, 2004-05) and San Diego (2002-03,) had won the previous five WCC Championships before USF and the Waves tied for the title in 2006. San Diego was first in 2007 and 2008 and again in 2010, with Gonzaga taking the crown in 2009. As for its overall success, the WCC has annually advanced at least one team to a national championship semifinal since 1989. League members have won 32 NCAA Team and individual championships overall. Portland women’s soccer captured its second NCAA National Championship in 2005 - the third for the league since 2001 when Santa Clara captured its first women’s soccer national title. Pepperdine men’s tennis captured the team title in 2006 after taking home the 2005 men’s volleyball crown.
