THIS WEEK: San Francisco travels cross-country to South Florida to compete in the Miami Hurricane Invitational. The Dons face host Miami at 3 p.m. (PST) on Friday, Sept. 10. USF takes on FIU and Bethune-Cookman at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. (PST), respectively, on Saturday, Sept. 11. LOOKING AHEAD: Next week, USF hosts two games against Bay Area rivals Cal and Stanford. Both Pac-10 programs are currently ranked in the top 10 in this week’s AVCA Top 25 poll. The Dons host No. 10-ranked Cal at 7 p.m., on Friday, Sept. 17th and No. 2-ranked Stanford at 7 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 18th. LOOKING BACK: Last week, the Dons hosted their own Powerade/Asics Challenge. USF dropped a tough four-set match to UC Santa Barbara 19-25, 25-16, 25-17 and 25-20. Tournament champion Tulsa swept the Dons 3-0 in their first game on Saturday, 25-23, 25-11 and 25-20 in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. USF ended the tournament by getting edged in four sets by Washington State, 25-23, 25-20, 25-22 and 25-22. CLEAN SWEEP: Freshmen are leading all eight major statistical categories for the Dons after two weekends of play. Setter/hitter Joan Caloiaro leads five of those categories: kills (59), attempts (157), hitting percentage (.242), assists (117) and service aces (5). Redshirt freshman middle blocker Jordan Irish leads the team in blocks (15) and solo blocks (2). Libero Whitney Swain’s 94 digs is a team-best. NICE TO MEET YOU: USF faces two opponents this weekend for the first time in program history: FIU and Bethune-Cookman. It will be the third and fourth times this season that the Dons can add a new opponent to its record book. USF took on Lipscomb for the first time during the Bluejay Invitational and Tulsa for the first time during the Powerade/Asics Challenge.

SCOUTING THE HURRICANES: Miami is coming off a tournament championship at the Blue Raider Bash, during which the Hurricanes went 4-0 against Auburn, Southern Mississippi, Georgia Southern and tournament host Middle Tennessee State. Red-shirt junior setter Katie Gallagher was named to the Blue Raider Bash All-Tournament team and then selected ACC Player of the Week. Gallagher is averaging 10.74 assists per set. Freshman outside hitter Alexandria Johnson, who averages 2.28 digs and 1.88 kills per set, was named the ACC Freshman of the Week. Junior Lane Carico lead UM in kills with 3.34/set. LAST TIME VS. USF: The two teams last faced off in 2008, with the match lasting five sets and the Hurricanes pulling off a win by scores of 25-11, 19-25, 17-25, 25-21 and 15-10. Before traveling to Miami, Bethune-Cookman plays a mid-week match on Wednesday against Alabama State. The Wildcats were without their best hitter, Jessica Wilson, last weekend. Freshman setter Alexis Bliese leads the team in assists with 6.71 per set, while freshman libero Jennifer Jimenez is the team’s dig-leader with 3.33 per set. LAST TIME VS. USF: This is first-ever meeting between the two programs.

TWICE AS NICE: For the second-consecutive weekend, true freshman Joan Caloiaro was named to an AllTournament team. This week’s honors came at the Powerade/Asics Challenge hosted by USF. The setter/ hitter totaled 54 assists, 41 kills, 20 digs, three blocks and three service aces for an average of 4.91 assists, 3.73 kills and 1.82 digs per set. RECORD BOOK: USF senior setter/libero Alaina Sully is currently eighth in USF program history in career assists. The Irvine, Calif. native has totaled 1,416 assists, but is 376 assist away from moving in seventh on the all-time list.

FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH: USF started three true freshmen in its first game of the season against Creighton: Caiti Wenger, Malina Terrell and Joan Caloiaro. MANDALA NAMED PRESEASON ALL-WCC: Senior outside hitter Sarah Mandala is no stranger to WCC accolades. This is the second consecutive year she’s been named to the league’s preseason team and she was a first team All-WCC selection as a junior and sophomore. As a freshman she was named honorable mention (as of September 6, 2010) All-WCC. Mandala was sixth in the nation last year in kills per set with an average of 4.84 and finished with Rank School 2010: Record Last week 508 total kills.

THE CHASE IS ON: In her final year wearing the green and gold, senior outside hitter Sarah Mandala Is just 218 kills from becoming USF’s all-time kill leader. She is currently fifth on the list with 1,313 kills. Mandala notched 508 kills as a junior, which was the third-best single season in program history and best-ever for a junior. The San Dimas native also holds the record for most kills in a season by a freshman with 350. TOUGH ROAD AHEAD: San Francisco plays nine matches this season against eight teams that qualified for the 2009 NCAA tournament. Included in that group is Cal, which lost to eventual national champion Penn State in the regional finals. Four of the Dons’ opponents (two of which they play twice) begin the season ranked in the AVCA Top 25 polls, with four of their other opponents receiving votes. DORON RETURNS TO HILLTOP FOR FOURTH SEASON: Gilad Doron enters his fourth season at the University of San Francisco. After his team won seven West Coast Conference games last season, he became the school’s leader in West Coast Conference wins as a coach with 24. Doron is just 24 wins shy of becoming USF’s all-time winningest coach. Jeff Nelson, who proceeded Doron from 2003-06, currently holds that title with a total of 76 wins. SOPHOMORE SWAGGER: The four returning players from the sophomore class are coming off a year during which they got some serious time under their belts as freshmen. Alycia Cox, Hadley Simmons and Erin Kilroy each played in all 27 of the Dons’ matches last season, with Leanna Ludes playing in 25 matches. EXCLUSIVE CLUB: Senior Sarah Mandala needs 197 digs to join the exclusive 700 kills and 700 digs club at USF. Only eight other players in the history of the program have played their way into the 700 club. Mandala dug 206 balls as a junior and 131 in both her sophomore and freshman years.
