Aggregational developments of modules

A “proto-module” is a unit that is developed to make a “module.” The “module” is an architectural element that will be expanded and developed towards an architecture. The module is not a given fact nor a permanent condition. It is a starting point for constraints that apply to architectural specificity. In this studio, I’ve learn how to generate geometrical outputs from non-geometrical sources to eventually create a module. The research aims to ask what is geometry, what defines it, and how might it be produced from non-geometrical sources, such as algorithms and topolo-

gy. The studio was separated into three phases that could represent the project into architectural proposition. The basic modular formation finding relational shapes were core study of the phase 1. In here, we’ve introduced planar connection, folding procedure and site introduction. The extrusion of module and tranform into architectural language was the core study of the second phase. The introduction of possible architectural proposition was key study in this phase. The last phase was about articulating into architectural system. Here, we’ve used what we learned in first two phases and find architectural system.

HYBRID THRESHOLD GRADUATE MEDIUM FALL 2018 INSTRUCTOR: JOSEPH GIAMPETRO CRITIC: OLIVIA VIEN, JOSEPH GIAMPETRO

Hybrid threshold

Using the speculative threshold montage after exploring thresholds of New York, the project was to design hybrid threshold. In each phases, the design procedure was the evidence to find design quality of the threshold. In the first development, the detailed photos taken of each element within the elevation to interpolate its Elevation, Plan and Section using orthographic projection. The drawn information should be taken as real as possible and areas which are not knowns should be interpreted. The next phase of the project focused on the complete modeling and documenting of all the entire

threshold of the chosen architectural elements using the demonstrated 2d and 3D drawing and modeling techniques. Using the orthographic projection drawing, we modeled the individual architectural elements which make up the new threshold. The best approach to this was to break down each architectural element within the threshold as its own pieces which is modeled. Then work to arrange and combine following the new threshold layout. The last phase of the project was to design new ‘hybrid threshold’ using the artifacts found in the first two phases. In here, I used sectional qualities to explore furthre design of the threshold.

HIGGINS HALL: BRIDGING THE HISTORY GRADUATE HISTORY FALL 2018 INSTRUCTOR: CLELIA POZZI CRITIC: OLIVIA VIEN, JOSEPH GIAMPETRO

“Steven Holl’s design, Higgins Hall has architectural significance in terms of historical and design perspective: bridging language of 19th century architecture with refined modernism and intervention design in historic building.”

Higgins Hall which is a school of architecture building of Pratt Institute gave its modern update in 2006 bringing the building’s new character in terms of architectural history and aesthetics. The Victorian style brick buildings were built in 1868 and it originally had three independent architectures. The middle one however was demolished by fire accident during its renovation project in 1996. Thomas Hanrahan who was dean of school at the time requested an architect, Steven Holl to design the middle part with modernized atmosphere. In 2006, the middle part was finally opened giving new identity of Pratt Institute’s architecture school and new vibes to its neighborhood. The reinterpreted building has significant discussion related to Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture written by Robert Venturi. The design approach of the building proposed new historical language but seems simple than ambiguous, and obvious than rich. The purpose of this paper is to discuss historical and aesthetical interpretation of modern intervention in historic buildings by using example of Higgins Hall. Specifically, the analysis of building will be compared and contrasted with the architectural design notion of an architect, Robert Venturi in terms of complexity and contradiction.
