VOLUNTEER PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Children Museum Costa Rica

A DAY AT THE PROGRAMME HOURS ACTIVITIES 7AM-8AM Breakfast at your host family or residence 8:30AM-3PM Work at the Museum (Morning Option). 3PM-open Free time to explore the city and diner. *This is just an exemplary daily itinerary. All activities scheduled above are subject to change.

Children Museum. Sitting on an isolated rise just north of downtown San Jose is one of the best examples of why Costa Rica is so different from other Latin American countries. The Children’s Museum of Costa Rica was not By taking the old military prison and turning it into an interactive and educational experience for its children, Costa Rica was sending the message that the future of this tiny country was not going to be that of bloodshed and strife. Instead, its future would be the education and care of its children. Dating back to activities that take place in its more than 50 display rooms are of great impact to the country. The Museum exists to help children understand and enjoy the world in which they live. It is a private, center and pacesetter for children’s exhibitions, educational programs and curriculum. Boston Children’s Museum focuses on three key areas of expertise: visitor programs, teacher resources and early childhood education.

Mission Museum exists to help children and families enjoy, understand and become active citizens of the world in which they live. They want children to grow up as successful learners who respect others and the natural world. They encourage imagination, curiosity, investigation, innovation, and play. Central to our philosophy is the belief that meaningful interactions with real objects, direct engagement and enjoyment promote learning.


VOLUNTEER INFORMATION 1. How many volunteers can the Project employ monthly? Maximum 7. 2. Has the organization received volunteers in the past? They have received help from volunteers in all different areas. 3. If it has received volunteers in the past, please write since what month and year: They have received help since they open the museum. 4. Are there any special features to which the volunteers has to pay attention to when working at this project? (Religion, illnesses, extra-vaccination, etc) The volunteers don’t have to pay an extra charge. 5. Any requirements to attend this programme? Only the strong desire to help and get involve in the Museum work. 6. The project receives volunteers all year round? Yes, but depends on availability. 7. Please specify holidays or other dates when the project closes and can not receive volunteers: They receive volunteers all year. 8. Is there a minimum amount of weeks volunteers can work at the project? Two weeks 9. Is there a maximum amount of weeks volunteers can work at the project? They can work as many weeks they wish. 10. Please give detailed description of tasks and duties of the volunteer:

Children’s Museum The displays at the Children’s Museum encourage hands-on play and allow children to learn and experience science, music, geography and other subjects. Visitors can experience a simulated earthquake and make can still be visited the volunteers will help the staff of the museum whit the visitors and they will explain the kids the different rooms of the museum.


11. Indicate the times and days the volunteer will be working in the week: The work schedule on the project will be from 8:30am-1:00pm and/or from 1:30pm-3pm Monday to Thursday. You can work full or part-time.

LOCATION OF THE PROJECT 12. PLEASE INDICATE THE CLOSEST CITY OR TOWN TO THE PROJECT. The Museum is located in San Jose, Downtown. 13. INDICATE WHAT TYPES OF TRANSPORTATION THERE IS FROM THE CENTER OF THIS CITY TO THE PROJECT, ITS COSTS AND APPROXIMATELY TIME THAT WILL TAKE TYPE COST TIME IT WIIL TAKE Bus 0.25 20 minutes (from the home stay). Taxi $3 10 minutes (from the home stay ).

14. DESCRIBE THE SORROUNDINGS OF THE PROJECT (country side, urban, town)

The province of San José is the most populated of Costa Rica’s seven provinces and is the seat of the nation’s capital, the city of San José. The province of San Jose includes areas representative of practically every climatic regime possible in Costa Rica since its territory extends from almost sea level at several points near the central at an elevation of 3,820 m. Additionally, a small portion of the province protrudes down the very wet eastern slopes of the Central Volcanic Cordillera in a section of Braulio Carrillo National Park. Thus, the entire range of temperatures and rainfall patterns that affect Costa Rica can be experienced somewhere in the province.


ACCOMODATIONS AND MEALS 15. Type of Accommodation? Volunteers can stay at a host family or residence. Host families are located in good residential neighbourhoods in San Jose. Home stays have been picked and chosen after an application process to make sure they have everything participants need. The residence is located only a few minutes from San Jose downtown main transportation system.The residence has shared bedrooms, bathrooms with hot water, a common room, kitchen and a laundry room. The house is fully equipped and features breakfast Lunch and dinner is included at host families and no meals at the residence option.

WHAT IS INCLUDED? Accommodation throughout your programme at a home stay or residence. Breakfast and dinner (Home stay option). Orientation upon arrival. Airport transfer on arrival to San Jose. Full on-site support and assistance. On-site 24 hour emergency contact number.

WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED? Personal travel insurance. All items of personal nature. Any extra activities and excursions not described on the planned itinerary. Transfer back to the airport at the end of the program. .
