National Outstanding Young Farmers Announced

Pictured on the cover this month is Nick McReynolds sharing a special moment with his cow “Eclipse-P.” Nick and Eclipse-P share a love for one another, and she returns to the parlor after the evening milking for their nightly ritual. He rubs her brisket and she rubs his back. This photo was taken by Nick’s mother Jennifer McReynolds. Henry and Jennifer McReynolds own Lucky Hill Farm in Danville, Vt. The herd is on REAP and in 2021 they were the Top Herd for ME Fat in their herd size (80-149 lactations), ranked among the Top 15 REAP Herds in the nation for GJPI, and have a lactation average of 22,113M. In this issue, enjoy features on the top production herds, the 2021 sale season, and the top 25 records in history.

Mary Elizabeth Eyler was born September 12, 2021, to Brian and Carrie (Hubbard) Eyler, Oakland, Minn. Her brothers, Thomas, 4, and John, 2, welcomed her home. Carrie was the second alternate National Jersey Queen in 2004. Gavin Clark Egelston was born March 2, 2022, to Clark and Mackenzie Egelston of Glen Meadows Farm, Fultonville, N.Y., in the car on the way to the hospital. He was welcomed home by his twin sisters, Natalie and Harper, age 4. Paternal grandparents are Dennis and Judy Egelston. Dennis is a past member of the AJCA Board of Directors. Clark was a member of Jersey Youth Academy Class II.

Mark Adam Awarded Outstanding Service Award Mark Adam received the Outstanding Service Award from the National Dairy Herd Information Association (DHIA). Adam is a past president of DHIA and, before his retirement, also served as the CEO of CentralStar Cooperative, Inc. Adam developed his passion for the dairy industry on his uncle’s farm in northern Indiana. He earned his certificate for completing the Purdue University Agricultural Short Course Program, worked as a relief DHI and AI technician, and also worked on multiple dairy farms in Indiana before accepting a position with Sire Power Inc. as a district sales manager. After working as a dairy herd manager in Goshen, Ind., Adam returned to Sire Power and was a regional sales manager for 13 years before Select Sires purchased Sire Power and he became the NorthStar Cooperative Director of DHI Services. This was a new business unit formed from the

merger of NorthStar-Select Sires, Michigan DHIA and Fox Valley DHIA in Wisconsin. Adam was elected to the National DHIA board of directors in 2002 and a year later became vice president before serving as president in 2006. In addition to his work, he also served on the International Committee for Animal Recording (ICAR) Devices Subcommittee and co-chaired the 2008 ICAR Biennial Meeting, served on the Council of Dairy Cattle Breeding Dairy Data Working Group, Michigan Animal ID Task Force and Dairy Record Management System (DRMS) Long-range Strategic Planning Committee, and chaired the National DHIA Quality Certified Services. Mark and his wife, Donna, live in Eaton Rapids, Mich. Adam has owned and worked with Jersey cattle for many years. He currently owns several Registered Jerseys with Maurie Kline in Indiana.

Vermont to Reduce Farmers’ Risk In an act sent to Gov. Phil Scott, the state of Vermont will begin covering premiums for farmers in a federal program designed to help bridge the gap when the cost of production exceeds the sale value of milk. This program was created through the Farm Bill in Congress. Chairs of the Task Force to Revitalize the Vermont Dairy Industry met with people from all levels of the dairy industry in Vermont during 2021 to formulate recommendations. The margin protection program’s premiums were among those recommendations. The premium amount is dependent on how large the operation is and how much milk a farmer wants to protect. Currently, about a quarter of Vermont farms have expressed interest in using the program. The task force discovered that cheese makers are selling product as fast as it is produced, so the hope for the margin protection program premiums is to make Vermont a favorable market for dairy farmers.

National Outstanding Young Farmers Announced Mark Adam, right, received the Outstanding Service Award from National DHIA.

Page 14

The oldest farmer recognition program in the United States recognized their National

Outstanding Young Farmers (NOYF) award finalists for both 2021 and 2022 at the annual NOYF Congress in Hilton Head, S.C. in early February. Among the 2022 Matt and Jenna Kilgus national winners were Matt and Jenna Kilgus, Fairbury, Ill. The Kilgus family operate a dairy farm, milking 150 Jerseys, and raise beef cattle, a farrow to finish hog operation, and goat meat business. They also grow corn, soybeans, and wheat. Matt also added a creamery and now processes and sells milk through a family-owned private label and in their on-farm store. Jersey Share in Market Continues to Grow The recent update of the leading indicator for Jersey breed growth—National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB) Semen Sales—showed the market share of Jerseys continuing to move upward. On March 8, NAAB reported members handled 4,450,506 units of Jersey semen last year. • Total Jersey semen sales in the U.S. were 2,690,868 units. • 1,675,020 doses were exported for the second highest level in the past decade. Within that, Jersey’s market shares increased to 15.8% of domestic sales—the highest ever reported by NAAB and up 0.4% from 2020. Overall, the sale of domestic Beef Semen Sales semen sales was down a total of 2016-2021 6.69% in 2021. Jerseys dropped 5.11% and Holsteins dropped 7.57%. A total of 17.1 million units were sold domestically across breeds. What is the impact of beef semen being used on dairy? MARCH 2022

An interesting statistic in the annual NAAB report is the continued increase of beef semen sales. Since 2015, sales in the domestic beef market have grown from 2.6 million to 8.6 million. This past year was a 17.2% increase from 2020. Dairy herds increasingly manage the quantity and quality of their replacement heifers through the combination of genotyping and sexed semen. The use of beef-on-dairy provides an avenue to produce profitable animals from females, not needed to produce replacement heifers. Beef semen sales have more than doubled over the past four years. An early indication of the impact could be the declining numbers of dairy replacement heifers in the United States. On January 1, 2022, the United States Department of Agriculture released a report showing the number of replacement heifers was 4.45 million last year—down 158,000 from the previous year. The report also showed that 2.84 million of those replacement heifers are expected to calve in 2022, which is a decrease of nearly 80,000 from 2021. USJersey will continue to monitor these trends as an indicator of growth. Page 17

Jersey Research Impacts Fertility Treatments

H

ave you ever noticed the similarities between human and animal sciences? Can research in one field be applied to the other and produce the same results? This is the theory that Dr. Samuel Prien, Ph.D., recently tested after looking at the viability of freezing Jersey embryos and how it relates to in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Dr. Samuel Prien, Ph.D. has been at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas, for over 30 years. He is a professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and holds a joint faculty appointment with the Department of Animal Sciences. Through research in humans and animals, Dr. Prien has discovered that a theory in one species can often be applied to another. This led to Jersey embryos affecting how human IVF is practiced. Dr. Prien has always operated under the motto of “do something that you already do, but make it better.” In the mid-2000s, he was asked to attend an event in Dalhart, Texas. At this event, he was introduced to the difficulty Jersey producers face when attempting to freeze Jersey embryos. As of 2007, Jersey frozen embryos resulted in fewer pregnancies when compared to Holstein embryos. He wondered if this was related to the high fat content in Jersey milk; he thought maybe there was in increase in lipid (fat) content in the embryos as well. This led him to the AJCC Research Foundation and the Jersey cow. The AJCC Research Foundation was established March 17, 1967, and has since

allocated over $1 million in seed funds to more than 150 projects. The foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. “The AJCC Research Foundation has provided funding for Jersey-specif ic research needs,” states Cari Wolfe, Director of Research and Genetic Program Development for the American Jersey Cattle Association. “Collectively, those projects have produced knowledge untold in additional income for Jersey owners as well as preventing economic losses.” The Research This question was further developed into a research plan, and Dr. Prien contacted Wolfe. She encouraged Dr. Prien to write up a formal proposal and submit it the AJCC Research Foundation for grant opportunities. The first award was made in 2007 with the objective to “determine if embryos from the same species have significantly different chemical composition.” With the AJCC Research Foundation grant money, Jersey and beef cattle breed embryos were secured for embryo weight and lipid content comparison. The research so far has had surprising results. Studying mice f irst, it was discovered that embryos from pound mice (mice that weigh more than average) did not develop as well as the embryos from the leaner mice. This translated to Jersey cattle, who have a higher fat content in not only their milk, but also their embryos.

Using grant money from the AJCC Research Foundation, Dr. Samuel Prien worked with a talented team to research the uniqueness of Jersey embryos, developing a method for testing and rating embryos before implantation. Dr. Prien, left, is pictured with co-inventor Dr. Lindsay Penrose.

Page 18

A frozen embryo immediatly after thawing. All embryos look similar to this at the time of thawing. The technology created using AJCC Research Foundation funds can distinguish which have the no potential to develop from those which will go on to make calves. All photos courtesy of Dr. Samuel Prien.

Using an electro-balance to try and weigh the embryos, the research found that Jersey embryos are much heavier than other cattle embryos, so much so that they did not even register on the sensitive scale. Dr. Prien reflected on how his meat science colleagues weigh their carcasses, through floatation. Using this knowledge, Dr. Prien and Dr. Lindsay Penrose, Ph.D. developed a device that selects viable embryos by examining buoyance, or the embryos’ ability to float in liquid. (continued to page 22)

Dr. Samuel Prien worked through the AJCC Research Foundation and the American Jersey Cattle Association to gain seed money for this research. It began through his study of the difficulty of freezing Jersey embryos.

Jersey Research (continued from page 18)

The device measures the rate at which embryos descend and can then rate health based on a pre-determined scale that has been established through practice. Currently, reliable curves have been established for cattle, mice, sheep, and humans. This discovery could change the dynamic of both human and veterinary medicine, allowing scientists to choose embryos for IVF with little to no risk to the embryos. They will be able to choose an embryo that is most likely to result in a pregnancy, increasing pregnancy success and increasing a producer’s bottom line. The research team has discovered that they can use their device to rate embryos as early as zygotes (newly formed embryo) and as late as blastocysts (an embryo that is five-six days post-fertilization). Early classification can eliminate wasted time implanting unhealthy embryos. Long-term, Dr. Prien is hoping to use Page 22

this research to circle back to his original goal of discovering a successful method of freezing Jersey embryos. He hopes to make the process of freezing embryos, and classifying healthy ones, simple enough for producers to do on their own farms. He also hopes to make it inexpensive so that the methods become routine in everyday life. His research is currently ongoing, as his findings have been extended to human embryology and continues today.

Louisville Parish Hosts Derby Showcase Sale Members of Kentucky’s only active Jersey parish— the Louisville Jersey Parish—hosted their annual Derby Showcase Sale on May 2, 2021, in Frankfort. Nine lots of Registered Jersey heifer calves sold for an average of $769.44. The all-breed event also auctioned Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Holstein, Milking Shorthorn and Red and White consignments, for an overall average of $800.26 on 38 lots. The sale is an anticipated social event for juniors and seniors alike, traditionally held the first Sunday in May following the Kentucky Derby. As dairy numbers in the region dwindle, the sale is opportunity for young people to purchase club calves for the show season. Complimentary grilled cheese sandwiches are served, and juniors are offered a discount on purchases. Funds are raised through a silent auction that includes the geraniums that adorn the show ring, a nice touch in advance of Mother’s Day. The Louisville Jersey Parish gives back in a variety of ways. Money is donated to judging teams and parish juniors who place in showmanship at the Kentucky State Fair. A small scholarship is also awarded. This year, additional support was given to the Kentucky Dairy Development Council tornado relief fund. The co-high selling Jerseys were auctioned for $1,000 each. Cassie Tyson of Frankfort purchased Barlu Megapower 964 339. The winter calf sired by River Valley PF Megapower-ET, GJPI +38, is out of a Very Good-82% daughter of Fairway Mygent Dallas-PP, GJPI -66. The next dam is appraised Very Good86% and has a four lactation m.e. average of 17,515–807–662. She was consigned by H. H. Barlow III, Cave City, Ky. Temple Strader and Andrew J. Hanshaw, Clarkson, Ky., chose the other $1,000-priced heifer, WHJ Shot Desire, a winter calf sired by Avonlea CF Slingshot-ET, JPI -101. DAIRY SUSTAINABILITY

The Environmental Footprint of the Farm

Y

ou are committed to dairy sustainability and want to do your part to better care for Mother Earth. But what does that mean? And where do you start? Frankly, the concept is somewhat vague, and it can be overwhelming. In this regard, no man is an island. As a producer who sells milk, your dairy check off dollars are working for you through the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy. The Innovation Center builds trust and gives the dairy industry a unified voice through the dairy value chain in discussions that affect dairy producers. Through the U.S. Dairy Net Zero Initiative (NZI), systems and technologies are being developed to help dairy farms become more sustainable no matter their size, geographic location, or management style. The effort is in infancy, but some tools are available now. In November 2021, the Jersey Journal discussed the concept of sustainability, describing from where it sprouted and why it is significant. This month, we will evaluate what sustainability means on the farm, where it all begins. To better position your business for the future, assess where you stand today, adopt current methods that make sense, stay abreast of developments, and become involved. Overview The Innovation Center was established in 2008 and its first charge was the commissioning of the agriculture industry’s

Page 34

first full life cycle assessment (Capper, Cady, and Bauman, 2007) for fluid milk. Its purpose was to proactively share dairy farmers’ heritage and progress to tell one unified story and set the record straight when others misrepresented global studies and their story. More recently, the Innovation Center has worked with farmers, dairy companies and other stakeholders over an 18-month period and set a 30-year public commitment to the planet known as the 2050 Environmental Stewardship Goals. The effort launched in October 2020 puts dairy in a positive light domestically and globally as a solution to climate change. The environmental goals for dairy have three aims: achieve greenhouse gas (GHG) neutrality, optimize water use while maximizing recycling, and improve water quality by optimizing utilization of manure and nutrients. Two distinct strategies are in place. NZI is for producers. The Processor Working Group is for processors. NZI breaks down barriers to empower all farms to reduce their environmental impact in an economically viable way through four key areas on the farm: feed production, cow care, energy management and manure management. NZI is a collaboration led by the Innovation Center and five other national dairy organizations, including Dairy Management Inc., the International Dairy Foods Association, Newtrient, the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) and the

U.S. Dairy Export Council. NZI also collaborates with public, private, and nonprofit organizations. More than $31 million in external support came from corporate partners and granting agencies in 2020 and 2021. Corporate partners include the likes of Nestlé, Starbucks, and Syngenta. Research partners include the USDA Agricultural Research Service, Cornell University, Texas A & M, the University of California-Davis, the University of Vermont, and the University of Wisconsin, among others. Through research, on-farm pilots, and development of new products, NZI aims to make sustainable practices and technologies more accessible and affordable on the farm. The Dairy Footprint Improving dairy sustainability begins with an understanding of what impacts the release of GHG, water use and water quality in the act to bring milk and dairy products to the table. When it comes to GHG emissions, production of milk on the farm is the greatest contributor at 51.5%. Other users include feed production (20.3%), processing (5.7%), packaging (3.5%), transportation (7.7%), retail (6.5%) and consumer (4.9%). More than 93% of water use is attributed to crop irrigation for feed. The balance is used for milk production (3.5%), processing (1%) and other (1.9%). On the farm, climate change is impacted by three types of gases—carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O)—each trapping heat from solar radiation in a different way. GHG is emitted from the barn, open lots, manure handling, collection and storage, and fields, and through transportation. NZI focuses on four key opportunities

JERSEY JOURNAL

to mitigate environmental footprint: enteric methane through cow management; manure handling and storage; feed practices and water use; and energy use. On-Farm Resources A tool now available to help dairy producers measure and improve their footprint is Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) Environmental Stewardship (ES), administered by NMPF. It is a voluntary program that recognizes scientific methods to calculate a farm’s footprint and offer benchmarks for comparison. The FARM ES module asks a series of questions to estimate GHG emissions and energy intensity. Input data includes milk production records, herd data, rations, manure management, and energy use. Results are reported as pounds of CO2 equivalent per pound of fat and protein corrected milk (FPCM). Milk production is normalized to the same scale through FPCM so results can be consistent over time even if output changes. GHG results for feed, enteric (cow), manure, and energy are reported along with a comparison to regional and national averages. Gas type breakdown is also reported CO2, CH4 and N2O. FARM ES evaluations are conducted by second party evaluators, including National All-Jersey Inc. Used over time, dairy producers can identify areas to improve, assess change, and report best practices in the supply chain, including documentation for credit markets. Dairy producers should focus on long-term goals since GHG emissions and other measures of sustainability fluctuate annually due to herd productivity, weather, feed availability, and economics. FARM ES is continually evolving and now includes data from more than 2,300 evaluations. Updates for the program are done collaboratively with the Innovation Center every three years. NMPF and the Innovation Center are updating the GHG model that powers FARM ES with the launch of FARM ES Version 3.0 in July 2024. The next version will offer exciting features, such as the ability to run what-if scenarios to analyze the environmental and economic implications of adopting different practices or technologies. What is Happening Now? Through 2025, NZI will focus on three aspects of sustainability applications: research, scale, and adoption. MARCH 2022

The research core represents the groundwork, or the foundational science, that will develop a roadmap for dairy farms to achieve the collective goal. Two current projects under the groundwork umbrella are the Dairy Soil and Water Regeneration Research Project and the Greener Cattle Initiative. The six-year, $23 million Dairy Soil and Water Regeneration Research Project involves eight farm pilots and eight research partners in four dairy regions. Its goal is to assess the economic and environmental impact of minimal disturbance tilling, cover cropping, innovative crop rotations and new manure-based products, and set the stage for development of new market opportunities for carbon and water quality. Though not the greatest contributor to GHG on the farm, it provides unique opportunities for carbon sequestration and water quality as revenue sources for dairy producers. The Greener Cattle Initiative is an industry partnership that aims to identify, develop, and validate commercially feasible technologies that reduce methane emissions from cattle. The program provides research grants that focus on feed additives and supplements, feed ingredients, selective breeding (development of specific traits that lead to low methane emitting cattle), and technology that reduces environmental footprint. Dairy Scale for Good (DS4G) seeks to pioneer, develop, demonstrate and de-risk new technologies and processes that show promise for a wide range of dairies and regions. DS4G explores new methods in large commercial dairies, which can provide the scale needed through partner pilot farms. Pilot farms are living laboratories to evalu-

ate technologies and practices on the market or available soon. DS4G aims to develop a profit/loss analysis across feed production, enteric emissions, and manure, showing dairies pursuing net zero how they can do so successfully and still be profitable. Trinkler Dairy Farm, Modesto, Calif., a supplier for Nestlé’s Carnation label, is the first partner farm of the DS4G pilot. A second pilot with Alliance Dairies in Florida was announced by Starbucks in November. The pillar for adoption strives to increase voluntary adoption of proven best practices and technologies by a wide swath of dairies. Strategies include supply chain demonstrations, assessments of current practices, farmer ambassador programs, and community groups. A project underway is Dairy Feed in Focus, offered to member-owners of Foremost Farms USA, a dairy cooperative in Wisconsin. Dairy producers are offered financial incentives to incorporate hybrid feeds that improve digestibility of starches, increasing feed efficiency. Other efforts include the Lafayette Ag Stewardship Alliance partnership with the Dairy Strong Sustainability Alliance, Grande Cheese (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and others in the Upper Midwest and the Syngenta-Nature Conservancy pilot program for the Saginaw Bay and Lake Erie watershed in Michigan. Get Involved Though no one knows what the future holds, the sustainability movement will certainly impact the way every one of us milks cows in the days ahead. To be proactive, gain knowledge about timely concepts like carbon sequestration, carbon markets, (continued to page 36)

HERD MANAGEMENT

Hoof Health: Taking a Fresh Step

H

oof health affects the cow more than you think. If you aren’t trimming at least twice a year, per cow, you can lose up to $185 on a first lactation cow and $333 on a mature cow according to University of Kentucky Department of Animal and Food Sciences. Do you regularly trim your cows hooves? What is the importance of trimming, footing, prevention of diseases, and dealing with lameness? Two Ohio hoof trimmers explain the facts. Allen Schlabach, Fredericksburg, Ohio, has been trimming hooves for 33 years. Looking back, it wasn’t his dream job. In fact he had two jobs off the farm in one year and then realized he missed the farm life. A fellow hoof trimmer wanted to sell his business and that is when Schlabach took the reins. “I wanted to create a marketable business while providing excellent service to my customers,” noted Schlabach. Tim Billman, West Salem, Ohio, has been trimming hooves for 23 years. In his mid-20s Billman started trimming as a result of his love for the industry, willingness to work with the animals, and appreciation of the dairy farmer. He trained with another hoof trimmer for a while and also took time to attend educational classes. “One key learning practice is to talk to other trimmers and develop a connection with them,” Billman said.

environment, bedding, stress, are some of the first things thought of. Various factors influence how the cows’ hooves grow. It is essential to keep cows trimmed twice a year to keep up with hoof health. A helpful rotation to hoof trimming is trimming cows at dry off, then again at 100 days in milk, but when should farmers start to trim? Springing heifers is a great age to start trimming. The hoof wall grows at about two inches per year and the normal hoof should be three inches long from the coronary band to the toe. When weight is shifted while the hoof is growing, it could cause that female to go lame. As the cow matures, more weight is put on the outside walls of the rear feet. This is where they have more overgrowth. For hooves with overgrown toes, a heel with an altered structure will be more susceptible to bacterial invasion as it will be in contact with more manure. “If trimming is just a band aid, there will be more problems in the near future,” said Schlabach. When trimming is routine to keep claws in optimal health, the cow will be capable of performing to her potential. Waiting to trim after the onset of lameness is called corrective hoof trimming. Over-trimming can also be destructive to the structure of the hoof as the sensitive tissues could be penetrated below the wall, causing pain.

Importance of Trimming Do you want longevity and production from your cows? Then proper hoof trimming is a must. The importance of trimming is to keep the cow as mobile as possible. “Just like an ill-fitting pair of shoes can cause blisters, sore feet in general make us less productive, same goes for the cows,” Schlabach explained. “Sore feet can cause a cow to lay down soon after milking before her teat end closes sufficiently, therefore higher probability of mastitis. She will spend less time at the feed bunk, less milk, showing poor estrus, longer calving intervals, etc. Her comfort should be a top priority because if she isn’t doing her job, you are losing money.”

Common Hoof Diseases The most common disease Billman has seen is the hairy heel wart. It is a virus that infects the skin and is typically located in the back of the foot, but can also be up front and in between the toes. Hairy warts are contagious and can spread through manure and frequently visited areas by those infected cows. This can cause the cow to lose mobility because of the soreness of the foot which can result in lameness if not treated and other issues regarding her health and milk production. However, there are many other diseases to watch out for. Along with the hairy heel wart being a top contender, Schlabach said the top diseases that have the most dramatic effect on cows are ulcers and abscesses. Ulcers can form from standing too long. An example of this would be overcrowding, standing in headlocks too

When a hoof trimmer assesses a cow’s hoof before trimming, they are looking at length and angle of the toe, sole thickness balance, wear pattern on feet, and for anything abnormal.

long, or in the holding pen. Abscesses are more prevalent when cows are slipping and sliding. Examples of this would be chasing cows to catch them, slippery surfaces, especially in winter time, or hot summertime temperatures can cause them to form. With management and determination, these diseases could be prevented and taken care of at the source. When talking about how nutrition is related to hoof health, laminitis is directly related to this topic. Laminitis is an aseptic inflammation of the dermal layers inside the foot that can come in acute, subclinical, and chronic cases. Rumen acidosis has been shown to be a key factor leading to laminitis. Acidosis is caused by the ingestion of greater than normal quantities of ruminally fermentable carbohydrates. Acidosis can cause hemorrhaging in the claw which predisposes her to an abscess. Lameness If hoof health is not a priority on the farm, there will be issues that arise for you and your cattle. Lame cows don’t want to get up and move, therefore feed/water intake will decrease, resulting in lower milk production and reproductive issues. (continued to page 38)

Page 37

Hoof Trimming (continued from page 37)

There are numerous reasons cows can become lame such as an outbreak of hairy heel warts, hoof rot, erosion, change of feed, and stress. Factors include environmental changes. For example, is a cow standing longer to get more airflow on her body because she is hot? “It is important for farmers to identify lame cows and take action with a hoof trimmer, vet, nutritionist, or confront the farm help,” said Billman. “Interesting research from back in the 90s showed milk loss three weeks prior to any visible lameness,” Schlabach said. “How much profit is already lost when we identify lameness and treat the issue at hand? At that point, we are two to three months late.” “Once they have lameness or an injury, there is scar tissue and there can be bone deformation which can make her susceptible to become a chronically lame cow,” continued Schlabach. Evaluation When trimmers such as Schlabach, look at a cow’s hoof before she gets trimmed, they are looking at length and angle of the toe, sole thickness balance, wear

Page 38

pattern on feet, and also if anything looks abnormal. They also evaluate pastern angle, sickle and straight hocks, and then determines how to best trim her hooves to get her comfortable again. While trimming, if any lesions are present in the claw, then they can dictate how the claw is trimmed. It is important to watch a cow move and see how the trimmer can better assist her. Footing Footing is also a key factor to hoof health. Is the cow walking on concrete that is worn down, cracked, or broken; is she walking in sloppy manure a lot that could cause diseases to transfer easier? With a pack barn and total rubber flooring, cows need to be trimmed more often. Sand gives good traction, but if you have coarse/ sharp sand you will probably be using a lot of blocks on thin soles. For ulcers or abscesses, placing a block on the good claw is very beneficial to remove weight bearing from the sore claw thus helping the healing process. Prevention “There is no unimportant job or part of a farm,” Schlabach said. Environment and clean comfortable

stalls so cows are able to get off of their feet and rest. Along with comfort, it is important to keep her trimmed regularly. A great preventative measure are footbaths. The best foot baths are proactive and only need minimal product to control hairy warts. Some farms need footbaths daily, while others need it only two or three times a week. Formaldehyde, copper, and zinc are the most commonly used products in footbaths. To get something under control can take two to three years of consistency. “Formaldehyde is the cheapest product, but it has some health risks that people need to be aware of while handling it,” explained Schlabach. “Three to f ive percent is common for a treatment bath, however, as low as one percent is effective to maintain control. Copper and zinc are heavy metals and need to be cautious about over-applying.” “For the most part every product works, but making sure you get enough of the product on the cows hooves is the problem,” said Billman. These trimmers have seen terrible hoof cases. Unfortunately some farmers only trim cows when they need to and aren’t getting a regular trim. Schlabach said, (continued to page 48)

PERFORMANCE REPORT Top 25 Records in History and National Class Leader List The Top 25 Records for Milk, Protein and Fat completed in the history of AJCA production testing programs are listed below. The National Class Leader List summarizes the 10 highest lactations for milk, protein, fat, and cheese yield in nine age categories. Lactations are 305 days (or less) in length and are official on the AJCA records. These lists include lactations added to the database through February 1, 2022. To qualify for these lists, all test days

included in a completed 305- or 365-day lactation record must occur in a herd or herds enrolled in the Production Records Plus, TPE-Plus, REAP Plus programs, or be a Generation Count {4} or higher for registration status. An asterisk in the column after days milked indicates that the animal was milked more than twice daily during part or all of the lactation. A “V” following the record indicates that it has been verified.

Hoof Trimming (continued from page 38)

“One cow I saw had avulsed both claw capsules on her left front foot from an unknown injury so she had to be euthanized.” Billman said, “One of my most challenging farms only trims long toes and lame cows and performs no maintenance trimming.” The farmer who puts it off, is pushing themselves back. Future “Hoof health = cow health = bottom line health,” said Schlabach. His best advice is to have a dedicated trimming area so there is no or minimal time required for setup and cow movement is easy. When having a plan, trimming day is not such a dreaded chore and will happen more frequently. This will enable more routine trimming instead of band aid fixes to keep cows healthy longer. “Most of the trimmers out there have your best interest at heart,” said Billman. “The longer we can keep you in business, the happier we are.”

In Memoriam Laurie Brewer Laurie Brewer, Arrington, Tenn., 68, passed away on October 29, 2021, at Vanderbilt University Hospital after a long, valiant, and inspiring struggle with a rare blood cancer. She was born Laurie Kelly on August 26, 1953, in Troy, Ohio, to the late Patsy Ruth (Van Fleet) and Mack Wayne Kelly. She grew up in Springfield, Ohio, and graduated from Shawnee High School in 1971. Shortly thereafter, she moved to western Canada with her family and then returned to Ohio to marry Rick Brewer the day after Christmas in 1971. While Laurie and Rick raised their family, she earned degrees in nursing from Ohio State University in 1979 and Antioch College in 1997. She received a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix in 2004. During school, she worked in medical centers serving Findlay and the Miami Valley and was director of the cardiac catheter lab at Springfield Mercy Hospital. Brewer was also a director at New Hanover Regional Health Care Systems

in Wilmington, N.C., and St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tenn. Most recently she was director of solutions trust for Hospital Corporation of America in Nashville. The Brewers also operated Laurick Jerseys with their family. A practical and early person, Laurie could be found feeding and milking cows, driving tractors, and doing whatever needed to be done to operate the business. The Brewers were active on the show circuit, exhibiting regularly at state fairs and the All American Jersey Show. Among the standouts are Laurick Berretta Calais, 2000 All American Junior Two Year Old, and Laurick Master Elle, 1994 Ohio State Fair Grand Champion. Laurick Giller Missie was All-Canadian Senior TwoYear-Old in 2011 and topped the Franchise Kind Sale in 2014 for $24,000. Brewer was a competitive euchre player and supported many sports teams, from youth to vintage baseball. For 20 years she cheered the Nashville Sounds and was a season ticket holder for Nashville Predators, naming the family’s border collie after their mascot, Gnash. Laurie loved deeply and had a fierce sense of social justice. Her greatest joy

came from sons, Matthew and Lucas, and five grandchildren. Her home is a testament to the things that gave her peace and gratitude: rooms lined with family photographs and porches facing wooded hillsides and flower gardens she tended. She was courageous in her showdown w i t h h e r f i n a l a d ve r s a r y, T- c e l l prolymphocytic leukemia, and helped to administer a Facebook group “You are Not Alone” for other patients and caregivers. In addition to her husband of 49 years, Rick, sons, Matthew (Melissa) Brewer of Danville, Ohio, and Lucas (Mary) Brewer of Lewisburg, Tenn., and grandchildren, she is survived by a brother, Michael (Beverly) Kelly of Marietta, Ohio; a sister, Jody (Chris Dale) Kelly of Terrace, B.C.; three nieces and a nephew; sisters-in-law, Deborah (Brewer) Atherton and Barbara (Brewer) Carmichael, and mother-in-law, Julie Brewer, all of Springfield. Memorials may be made to the TPLL research project at the University of Toronto, led by Professor Patrick Gunning (https://uoft.me/UTM-TPLL). They are worth more if

REGISTERED.
