THE GUITAR STUDIO AT SOUTHERN MISS is one of the leading guitar departments in the region, housed within one of the leading schools of music in the region. It is headed by nationally-recognized concert artist and educator, Nicholas Ciraldo, and boasts nearly twenty talented students at the undergraduate and graduate level. The Guitar Studio focuses on creating and developing the “whole guitarist” – someone with solid technique, well-trained musicianship, keen sight-reading ability, excellent aural skills, practical foundations in teaching, well-versed knowledge of the major repertoire, and realistic perspectives of the field.

PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES are available on a weekly basis in “Recital Class,” at each semester’s “Guitar Gala” and “Chamber Music Recital I and II,” and throughout the year through the USM Guitar Society (founded fall 2008). Students are encouraged to seek out as much performance experience as possible. MERIT- AND NEED-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS are available to guitar students at both the graduate and undergraduate level. Graduate students may be eligible for an assistantship, which provides free tuition throughout the entire year including summer and a teaching stipend during the fall and spring semesters. It is recommended that applicants apply at early as possible to improve probability of scholarship or assistantship availability. AUDITIONS are held every fall and spring. Additionally, a short sight-reading examination will be included for prospective undergraduate students. The B.M. recommendations are for prospective freshman and transfer students. Nicholas Ciraldo is a leader among his generation of American classical guitarists. He has won awards and reached high levels at several prestigious solo and chamber competitions in France, Italy, and the U.S. Dr. Ciraldo has performed throughout the United States, South America, and Europe. He also enjoys a busy concert schedule with his wife, flutist Rachel Taratoot Ciraldo, as the Ciraldo Duo. He also is faculty advisor to the Southern Miss Guitar Society. He has given several lectures and masterclasses throughout the U.S. and Brazil. His students have attained teaching and performing positions throughout the U.S. Nicholas Ciraldo holds a B.M. from Indiana University, a M.M. from the New England Conservatory of Music, and a D.M.A. degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Since 2005, Dr. Ciraldo has been Assistant Professor of Guitar at The University of Southern Mississippi.
