Our students and faculty perform and teach on the national and international stage. An education here is affordable and accessible yet priceless to your future.

Dr. Richard Kravchak

DIRECTOR OF THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC

Welcome to another season from the School of Music at The University of Southern Mississippi! I am honored to be the director of the music institution that is the flagship institution of the state of Mississippi, the destination music school for the entire Southeast, and one of the finest music schools in the nation. For years, our slogan has been that we are “Bringing the world to Mississippi.” This is because our students hail from more than 18 countries and from across the United States. Also, we have brought the finest performers of our generation to Hattiesburg, including Plácido Domingo, Renée Fleming, Yo Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman and many, many others. This year, we are turning that slogan around to “We bring Mississippi to the world.” We are very excited to be presenting performances in Carnegie Hall, Jamaica, and Spain, all while serving as cultural ambassadors for Southern Miss, Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and the United States. I truly believe that our exceptional students and faculty represent the best that our state has to offer. Over the past year, our students and faculty have performed and brought our own brand of southern hospitality across the globe. Whether you are an alumnus, friend, or future student of the School of Music, I hope to meet you at one of more than 400 performances this year! Find out more about us and all the great things happening on our journey “to the top” at usm.edu/music.

UNIVERSITY BANDS

This year The University of Southern Mississippi’s Wind Ensemble had an extraordinary year of accomplishments. Under the direction of Dr. Catherine Rand, the group released its first compact disc with the NAXOS Wind Band Classics series entitled, “Alchemize” in December 2017. The disc features music by the Pulitzer Prize-winner Joseph Schwantner, the late David Maslanka, and young composer Steven Bryant. The contemporary CD features faculty members Jackie McIlwain on clarinet and tenor Jonathan Yarrington. The Wind Ensemble was invited to perform at the College Band Directors National Association Regional Conference in Tampa, Florida in February 2018. Selected by blind audition process, the group was one of only seven college ensembles selected to perform. Paying tribute to the wonderful legacy and history of the program, Rand invited Dr. Thomas Fraschillo, former Director of Bands, to conduct an aria which he had transcribed for wind band during his 28-year tenure at Southern Miss. “Our students were so honored to have Dr. Fraschillo conduct, it was a very emotional moment for all who were there” said Rand. Associate Director of Bands, Dr. Colin McKenzie conducted a work by Percy Grainger and Dr. Richard Perry, tuba, performed Michael Daugherty’s Reflections on the Mississippi. A rousing standing ovation and multiple calls-backs for the conductors made for a great showing for Southern Miss. Visit naxos.com to hear and purchase The University of Southern Mississippi Wind Ensemble’s new CD, ALCHEMIZE.

The Pride of Mississippi had a terrific year, full of the spirit, tradition, energy, and excellence to which we have all become accustomed. The band opened its season with the ribbon cutting ceremony and Pride Preview performance in our brand new marching band practice facility which includes an artificial turf practice field, large rehearsal tower, and storage areas for marching band equipment. It was really wonderful to see so many of our alumni, parents, and friends at this event celebrating this transformative investment into The Pride of Mississippi. An additional highlight of the season was the opportunity to perform a joint halftime production with the Southern University Marching Band. In the spirit of comradery, and through a desire to show what kinds of things can be accomplished when we come together to work for a common cause, the two bands performed a stirring rendition of “America The Beautiful” – sure to be a lasting memory for all of our members and, we hope, for the crowd in attendance at The Rock! As we move into the 2018 season, the Pride of Mississippi is experiencing great things already – and gearing up for more to come! Boasting an enrollment of 289 members (including 100 brand new faces), The Pride of Mississippi is 20% larger than it was two years ago! We have plans to perform in exhibitions at 3 different high school marching band contests in addition to our usual set of home football games. Additionally, The Pride of Mississippi has been invited to perform at several festivals and parades in Spain during the month of May! The band faculty and staff are currently in the planning phases of a tour of Spain, excited for the opportunity to broadcast our Southern spirit abroad.

A Southern Miss fan since early childhood, Sharon Laird is a proud Southern Miss alumna. From the moment her parents took her to her first USM football game and she heard The Pride perform “Amazing Grace,” she decided not only to be a Golden Eagle one day, but to become a band director – and she did. In 1990, upon graduation from USM, she began her career as director of bands in Italy, Texas. While she enjoyed her time there, she missed her home state and moved back to Mississippi, teaching in Magee, Taylorsville, and West Jones before accepting a position as the director of bands at Oak Grove High School in Hattiesburg. She recently retired after completing her 20th year at Oak Grove where the concert and marching bands were all-superior sweepstakes winners and the “Warrior Pride” Marching Band was the 2017 6A State Marching Band Champion. While there, Laird was a two-time winner of the SEMBDA Band Director of the Year (1997 and 2014) and she was the 2014 Phi Beta Mu Bandmaster of the Year for the State of Mississippi. She was also the 2014 MHSAA and NFHS State Music Educator of the Year and Region 3 (Includes 8 states) Music Educator of the Year. She served as the president of the Mississippi Bandmasters Association, assistant marching director for the Mississippi Lions All-State Band, and in 2019 will be the head marching director when the Lions Band competes for the International Championship in Milan, Italy. Laird attributes much of her success to the mentoring she received from the music faculty at Southern Miss and the world-wide reputation of the School of Music. “While my professors were understanding and supportive, they always pushed me far beyond my comfort zone. As a country girl from the small town of Sumrall, Mississippi, USM made my world so much bigger. The one thing I’ll always remember, and the single coolest thing about the School of Music, was that all the faculty members took care of me. Even though I was a trumpet major and wind band student, the entire faculty encouraged me.” When asked what advice she has for potential and current students, Mrs. Laird says, “You are on a mission to create a wonderful future for yourself. Southern Miss will provide you with the foundation from which you will soar! Practice is important, do it everyday. Hang out with likeminded people and talk shop. Immerse yourself in your course of study. Find a mentor: a successful, experienced person in your career field and listen to them. They will give you life lessons and practical information that will carry you far. Allow yourself to be influenced by the positive people who look for the best in humanity.”

The Southern Miss Wind Ensemble has had an extraordinary year making music. With a performance at the College Band Director National Association Regionals and recording a new compact disc, Southern Miss band program has truly topped the charts. Next year the Wind Ensemble and the Pride of Mississippi will be traveling to Europe to share the wonderful music making that happens in the great state of Mississippi. - Catherine A. Rand, D.M.A.

Dr. Kyle Hill recently retired after his 30th year of teaching and 26th year at Pearl River Community College. At PRCC, Dr. Hill served as chair of the Fine Arts & Communications Department, director of bands, and director of the Brownstone Center for the Arts. During his tenure at PRCC, the band program was recognized as one of the premier community college programs in the region with several national appearances, including the 2013 Inaugural Parade for President Barack Obama. Hill served two years as president of the Mississippi Community College Faculty Association, three terms as president of the Mississippi Community College Band Association, and two years as president of the PRCC Faculty Association. In 2017, he was recognized as a semi-finalist for the Grammy Music Educator of the Year Award. Hill served twelve years on the Lamar County School Board with three years as the chair of the board. He also is currently serving in his seventeenth year as Chief of the Northeast Lamar Fire Department in Lamar County. Active as a performer, Kyle currently serves as orchestra director and drummer at Temple Baptist Church (Hattiesburg). He is also a member of the Hattiesburg City Band, where he serves as assistant conductor, and performs with numerous theatre and showchoir groups. He credits Dr. Tom Fraschillo and Dr. Sherman Hong with preparing him for a life long career in music education. Southern Miss was a receptive place that nourished his talent and pushed him to always strive for excellence in the ensemble and his professional career. Highlights of his tenure at Southern Miss certainly must include the many performances with the Wind Ensemble and The Pride. When asked what advice he would give potential students, he said. “Choose Southern Miss. You will find a faculty that cares about you and will help you fulfill your musical dreams. Work hard, practice, study, practice, make friends, practice, have fun, and practice. Set goals that will take you through periods of growth throughout your career. You will not find a better place to pursue a degree than Southern Miss.

CHORAL ACTIVITIES

Choral Activities at Southern Miss works with students to increase their awareness and access nationally and internationally. It is apparent when a teacher’s vision is limited because their musical experiences and relationships have been contained to a local perspective during their education. Our students leave Southern Miss having interacted with national and international composers, singers, and venues. Over the last 15 years, groups have had national performances in Los Angeles, Portland, Chicago, Indianapolis, Memphis, Chattanooga, Knoxville and New York. International appearances have occurred in France, England, Italy, Hungary, Romania, Austria, the Czech Republic, Norway, Sweden, The West Indies and Mexico. Graduate Choral Seminars have been held in Estonia, Russia, Sweden and Salt Lake City. We believe our students leave Hattiesburg with a larger view of our profession. The Southern Chorale visited Norway and Sweden in May 2017. The tour featured performances in six wonderful venues, including the great Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. Performances included a collaboration with Karlstads Motettsällskap while in Sweden and with two choirs in Trondheim at the Cathedral: Stavanger Domkor, directed by Oddgeir Kjetilstad, and Nidaros Domkor, directed by Karen Haugom Olsen. The tour followed regional performances of the “Martin Double Choir Mass,” and two state convention appearances in Louisiana and Mississippi. This year also included the compact disc release of a Southern Miss commission, “The Seven Last Words of Christ,” by Louisville composer Richard Burchard and performed by the Hattiesburg Choral Union and the Symphony Orchestra. The work will be presented again in spring of 2018 as part of a Carnegie Hall premiere. Next year is looming as an exciting time in Choral Activities. The Southern Chorale will make its third trip to Jamaica. This has become a tradition of service with friends on the Island. The trip will include exchange with students of all ages, including the University of the West Indies. In addition, the Chorale warmly accepts benefit concerts when possible to help with important organizations that serve the Island. Also, the continuing relationship with Estonia and composer Tõnu Kõrvits will continue. The Southern Chorale will present the US premiere of Moorland Elegies. The work has swept through Europe this year with many accolades, including the “Estonian Composition of the Year” in 2017. Also, movement #4, Fall, Leaves, Fall was number 15 on NPRs top 100 in 2017. The Southern Miss Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Kilgore, has been selected by blind audition to perform at the 2019 Mississippi American Choral Directors Association/Mississippi Music Educators Association (NAfME) Conference.

Amon Eady is completing his first year as the director of choral Activities at Central Michigan University. Before teaching in the White Station community of Memphis, Tennessee for ten years and earning his Ph.D. in music education and choral conducting from Florida State University, Eady received his first two degrees from Southern Miss. His choirs have performed at state and regional conventions of the American Choral Director’s Association, including a performance by the White Station Men’s Choir at the 2014 Regional ACDA Convention in Jacksonville, Fla. Eady is also active as a presenter, having given presentations at state, regional, and national conventions of ACDA, as well as the National Association for Music Education. Eady’s parents were performing arts teachers, so his experience at USM solidified that teaching performing arts was going to be the career path he was meant to travel. “I was so fortunate to study with such wonderful professors who challenged me, and whose fingerprints are still on my life as an educator now, but my work with Dr. Greg Fuller provided the inspiration and direction for the foundation of a career.” “I would encourage any student, music-major or non-music-major, to participate in ensembles while they can. I was an instrumental music education major when I first arrived at USM and I was provided with so many opportunities to participate in wonderful ensembles of all kinds. It is so easy for young people to disappear into video games and social media, but in the world of music making, the opportunity for human contact and interaction will serve to create a context for peaceful, harmonic living. I could not imagine anything more vital to our future.”

UNDERGRADUATE DEGREES Southern Miss Choral Activities has become a regional leader in choral music excellence. From the placement of outstanding teachers, to exceptional performances locally, nationally and beyond, Southern Miss Choral Activities is making a difference and adding to the quality of life in many communities. For undergraduates, we offer degrees in music education, vocal performance, music history, a Bachelor of Arts with an emphasis in voice, and Bachelor of Science in entertainment industry. Choral Service Awards are available for majors and non-majors singing in major choral ensembles. Our mission includes orchestral opportunities and collaborative efforts such as a recent church music conference, featuring Mack Wilberg. The Southern Invitational Choral Conference now hosts more than 700 participants each year. The Southern Experience Summer Show Choir Camp is growing in reputation as one of the most popular educational camps in the nation.

UNDERGRADUATE DEGREES OFFERED: • Bachelor of Arts in Music • Bachelor of Music - Performance • Bachelor of Music Education- Choral Licensure • Minor in Music

Singers at Southern Miss are afforded diverse performing opportunities at the highest level. Whether they are concert tours around the world, national and regional convention appearances, or resident opera and musical theatre productions with staging and high-level orchestral musicians, we give our students a path to careers.” -Dr. Gregory Fuller

Assistantships, partial assistantships, out-of-state waivers, and service awards/ scholarships are available on a competitive basis to students that are accepted to the program. In addition, students pursuing the MMEd and PhD with a choral emphasis, the MM and DMA in piano or voice and the MM theory students are also considered for those awards if active in the choral program. Podium time is deemed important for all MM and DMA students and is achieved with multiple ensembles. The Chamber Singers is a fully dedicated ensemble for graduate conductors. Customized travel seminars are a regular part of the agenda for graduate choral conductors at Southern Miss. Recent interaction includes the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir (EPCC) in Tallinn, faculty members at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki (Finland), the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Choir School at Madeleine Cathedral in Salt Lake City, the Latvian Radio Choir in Riga, and the Saint Petersburg Chamber Choir (Russia). In addition, the conducting studio attended Laulupidu (Five-year Estonian Song Celebration) in 2014, also in Tallinn. Workshops have focused on conductors, composers, choral singers, repertoire, research, culture and organizational administration. Multiple face-to-face meetings have occurred with Arvo Pärt, Tõnu Kõrvits, Daniel Reuss, members of the EPCC, ErkkiSven Tüür, Tõnu Kaljuste, Länsiö Tapani, Matti Höykki, Kaspars Putninš, Galina Grigorjeva, Veljo Tormis, Aarne Saluveer, Mack Wilberg, Gregory Glenn, members of the St. Petersburg Chamber Choir and Nicolai Kornev.

Southern Miss alumna Angela DavisMorris was a member of The Pride of Mississippi Marching Band. Having come from an extremely small band, she remembers being in awe of the number of musicians lining up to march for the first practice. “I remember immediately feeling a part of the group and taking personal pride in our production. We were inspired to work hard for the team. No one wanted to be the weakest link,” she said. Davis-Morris established her disability law firm in Hattiesburg 25 years ago. In addition to being an established attorney, she feels led to do more, to help more. In her spare time, she works with Hub City Service Dogs, Inc. as well as volunteering, being a member of numerous committees, and an avid supporter of all things Pinebelt. “To the students who may be struggling through exams, papers, finals, or juggling work and school… Just know that while life may seem crazy now, the hard work put in today will be worth it in the end.”

VOICE STUDIES

The University of Southern Mississippi offers one of the most comprehensive vocal music programs in the Southeast. In addition to the major ensembles offered by Choral Activities, students at Southern Miss have the opportunity to be involved in the Southern Opera and Musical Theatre Company. Since 1948, The University of Southern Mississippi Opera, now known as the Southern Opera and Music Theatre Co. (SOMTC), has risen to a program of excellence in the area of music stage production. As a representative ensemble of the University, the SOMTC has performed both operas and musicals each year, some of which feature guest artists. In recent seasons, the SOMTC has presented operas including Carmen, Così fan tutte and La Boheme, as well as musicals like West Side Story, Sweeney Todd and Mary Poppins. Undergraduate students come from all over the U.S. and overseas to study music at Southern Miss. The SOMTC has a very high percentage of members who are awarded scholarships. Besides being part of this renowned ensemble, undergraduate voice majors receive regular coachings and lessons with our experienced and dedicated faculty. The Southern Miss School of Music is the place you want to be for all things vocal— training, foundational, pedagogical, performance, and enjoyment in singing! Our students—former and current—are winners and performers on a national and international level. They are realizing their dreams. Across campus in the sciences, business, political science, communications, art, theatre, and dance, our students excel and go forth to become living and active evidence of what we do here. It’s simply great to be an Eagle!” - Dr. Kimberley M. Davis, D.M.A

SOUTHERN OPERA AND MUSICAL THEATRE COMPANY

This past year’s opera and musical theatre stage productions by the Southern Opera and Musical Theatre Company were by all accounts, “epic.” From the landmark, sold-out production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera to Puccini’s masterwork, Turandot, which was presented in a joint production with the Mississippi Opera. Turandot was the largest operatic production ever produced in the state of Mississippi, and completed a banner year for the Southern Opera and Musical Theatre Company, our distinguished stage production program at Southern Miss. This year, the winner of five Tony Awards, The Drowsy Chaperone, will take to the boards on October 25 – 27, 2018 for three performances in the Mannoni Performing Arts Center Auditorium. The hysterical show is a parody of American musical comedy of the 1920s. The story concerns a middle-aged, musical theatre fan as he plays the record of his favorite musical, the (fictional) 1928 hit “The Drowsy Chaperone.” The show comes to life onstage as he wryly comments on the music, story, and actors. With a book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar and music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, the SOMTC production will be directed by the team that brought local audiences The Phantom of the Opera, including Mike Lopinto, director, Michael Miles, music director, Ryan Anthony, choreographer and Tammy Mansfield, costumes. In spring 2019, student members of the Southern Opera and Musical Theatre program will stage another grand opera production. Auditions will be held later this fall in order to find an exceptional slate of singers. The title of the opera production will be announced in November.

Stacey Trenteseaux is a Southern Miss alumna who finished a master’s degree in voice performance in 2015. While at USM she worked extensively with the Southern Miss Symphony and other projects like FestivalSouth and the Natchez Festival of Music as a graduate assistant for Dr. Jay Dean and photographer for Dr. Mike Lopinto. She recently sang her German operatic debut in the title role of Verdi’s Luisa Miller with Pasinger Fabrik Opernhaus Munich this past June and also works freelance English teacher and arts project manager. Through her training at Southern Miss with Dr. Maryann Kyle, Trenteseaux refined her musicianship and the skills needed for a career in the creative arts. “My studies helped me build, gather, and experiment with my own set of stylistic and musical tools. I also studied 3 semesters of German and 4 semesters of French as a part of my degree. One must have language skills to live and work abroad in the opera industry. And the project management experience I gained at USM has become my bread and butter!” Stacey performed four lead roles at USM and made her professional debut as Micaëla in Mississippi Opera’s 2016 production of Carmen. She says the path hasn’t been easy, but that it has been worth it. Through connections at USM, she attended the International Performing Arts Institute (IPAI) in Kiefersfelden, Germany in 2013. Three years and one master’s degree later, she found herself back at IPAI with a completely new set of options that led her to move to Germany.

The Symphony Orchestra finished another exciting, yet bittersweet, season as we said “good-bye” to our Maestro. Jay Dean announced that he will be retiring from his duties as Music Director of the Southern Miss Symphony Orchestra after spending 30 years building one of the finest orchestra programs in the country. Dean leaves behind an orchestra program that rivals any in the country in terms of talent, support, diversity, recognition, and resources. Dean’s final purely orchestral concert featured one of the most beautiful pieces ever written, Richard Strauss’ Death and Transfiguration. The work was a fitting tribute to Dr. Dean as he will surely be transformed and his considerable talent and energy will be seen in other musical projects around our state.

ORCHESTRAL ACTIVITIES

The School of Music is excited to welcome Dr. Michael Miles as the Interim Director of Orchestral Activities. The coming season series will be titled Tribute as the orchestra pays tribute to many of the masters of orchestral composition, conducting, and teaching. The season begins with a tribute to the greatest of all American-born musicians, Leonard Bernstein. We will pay tribute to all facets of Bernstein’s influence on the American musical landscape. Our second concert will pay tribute to the music of Mexico as we feature guest conductor Jorge Perez-Gomez from the University of New Mexico. Our Future Stars concert this year will feature three of our talented university students and a tribute to American music. And our final concert will be a tribute to choral music with our outstanding Southern Chorale and the

The University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra has a rich tradition of providing our community and region with the highest quality in symphonic programming while focusing on the musical, academic and life successes of our students. The students in our orchestra come from all over the world to study with our excellent applied faculty, and gain professional-level experience in our orchestra while honing their musical craft. Alumni from the Symphony Orchestra are performing in the finest orchestras in the world, teaching in the best universities in the world, and training and inspiring the next generation of musicians all over the world as public and private school music teachers. -Dr. Michael Miles

A day in the life of Alex Encinas as director of education for the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra starts very early in the morning. He is in charge of approximately 1,00 students from three different public school districts, as well as the strings teachers. Additionally, he must coordinate a series of chamber music and symphony concerts. Since his arrival in 2007, this institution has given him the opportunity to create the International Viola Competition, and transform existing projects such as the Mississippi Youth Symphony and the Premier Orchestral Institute, which provides great support to the emerging young talents of Jackson and surrounding areas. One of his favorite moments during the year happens in June, when the Premier Orchestral Institute takes place. POI is an international festival that every year receives students and teachers from approximately nine countries. “I cannot, and I must not forget the great support I received from my alma mater. Without a doubt its orchestral program was a great motivation for my artistic growth. Dr. Jay Dean’s artistic vision created the program that has made the greatest impact in my career. I truly enjoyed playing with soloists of international stature, and learned so much along the way.” Encinas said he will always remember his conversations with Dr. Michael Kimber about music, and the chamber music lessons with him. Encinas’s advice for potential students, whether they are international or not, is to “respect and value their teachers and the opportunities that USM offers them.” “I have no doubt that the education I received in my time was excellent, but the most important were the lessons I learned from Dr. Dean on how to motivate people and organize artistic projects.” He is so grateful to USM that he, to this day, continues to recruit students for its music program.

The Southern Miss cellists form an international community that includes students from the United States, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Honduras and Brazil. Weekly individual lessons provide guidance for establishing a strong and healthy technical foundation and help students cultivate a sense of stylistic awareness. The Studio Recital Class serves as a forum where the cellists perform and discuss their current repertoire. The Southern Miss Cello Festivals offer students a unique opportunity to participate in master classes, hear guest artist performances and rub elbows with the best professionals in the field.” -Dr. Alexander Russakovsky

CLASSICAL GUITAR STUDIO The Classical Guitar Studio at Southern Miss is one of the leading guitar departments in the region. It is headed by nationally recognized concert artist and educator, Dr. Nicholas Ciraldo, and boasts a large number of talented students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Alumnus James Covelli, M.D. is a radiologist for the United States Air Force and is currently attending Stanford University for a Woman’s Imaging Fellowship. The 1997 graduate performed as principal clarinetist with the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, Mississippi Opera as well as the Air Force Band prior to attending medical school in Washington D.C. He continues to perform as a freelance musician in San Antonio, TX and San Francisco, CA. As a music performance major, he notes that his experiences in the Symphonic Band, Symphony Orchestra and chamber music ensembles instilled a fine balance of discipline, perseverance and compassion that not only helps him in his medical studies, but enables him to relate to his patients on a daily basis. “One of my music professors told me that in order to succeed, it takes 10% talent and 90% drive. This is the advice that I would pass on to potential students to USM. Work hard, play hard and stop and smell the roses.”

PERCUSSION STUDIES

Alumna Yuting Ji started to play the piano when she was four. From then on, she practiced almost every day, aspiring one day to be a virtuosic pianist. Her graduate studies led her to Southern Miss to pursue her D.M.A. that she completed in 2016. She currently teaches at Shandong Normal University, where she teaches applied piano majors, music history and theory in English, and performs as a solo and collaborative pianist. While at USM, she studied with Dr. Ellen Elder, where she recalls playing with her side-by-side. As a graduate assistant in the School of Music, she had opportunities to become a better collaborative pianist and provided her many amazing memories that she cherishes. Ms. Ji is the winner of several competitions for her performance, including first prize in the Shandong Province Youth Instrumental Competition, first prize in the Fourth International Klavierwettbewerb Wiesbaden Vorrunde China (Shandong Division), Best Performance Award in the Fourth International Klavierwettbewerb Wiesbaden Vorrunde China, first prize in the Fifth National Instrumental Music Competition, and second prize in the Fourteenth Asian Piano Opening Competition. “Dr. Elder is a fantastic pianist as well as a teacher. I miss her and the sunshine and warm weather of Hattiesburg, and, she laughs, “I actually miss the basement of Mannoni Performing Arts Center where I practiced every day.” When asked what advice you would give to current students Yuting said, “If you have interests in any field you really like, work hard on it.”

The Percussion Studio at Southern Miss has earned an excellent national and international reputation, performing at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention and several national and international percussion festivals. The Drum Line and Percussion Ensemble have been featured on the Vic Firth, Pearl and Remo websites and have recently performed with renowned artists such as Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez, Ney Rosauro, Richie Garcia, Bill Summers, Juan Alamo and Ricky Sebastian. The Steel Pan Orchestra is one of the elite steel pan programs in the country and has recorded and/or performed with the likes of Andy Narell, Victor Provost, Robert Greenidge and Ray Holman. Percussion students can also perform in the Samba Band, Percussion Jazz Combo and Latin Lab (Salsa Band). Guest artists frequently give performances and clinics on various percussion instruments. The facilities include a percussion room, steel band room, drum set lab, three teaching studios and seven additional practice rooms, all designated for percussion practice.

Music education at Southern Miss has been a staple of the School of Music since it’s earliest days. Chances are, if you are reading this, you majored in music education or were taught by someone who did, right here at USM. As we move into next decade of the 21st century, we are bolstering our efforts to train the next generation of music educators and are calling on many of our finest alums to be part of the process. As a start, we welcome some new and familiar faces to our campus for 2018-19 academic year.

Brian Hughley, M.D., graduated from the USM school of music in 1996 with a degree in Music Education. For the next nine years, he enjoyed a career as an educator and performer throughout the southeast. In 2000, Brian joined the United States Air Force Heritage of America band as a percussionist. In 2005 Brian left the professional music world to begin medical school at the University of Virginia. Following this, he completed a fellowship in Head and Neck Oncologic and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Iowa. Since 2015 Brian has been on the faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. “USM School of Music students clearly get a world class education and musical experience. But the concepts of excellence, work ethic, and teamwork are directly transferable to many other disciplines. I quote the concepts learned from Dr. Thomas Fraschillo, Dr. John Wooton, and Mr. Raoul Jerome every day when teaching young doctors how to perform surgery. The School of Music will not only help you become a better musician, it will give you the skills to become better at anything you choose to do in life.”

After spending 30 years as a successful high school band director, alumnus Artie Adams is currently serving as an adjunct faculty member in the School of Music, Music Education Division. Adams’ current role as a student teacher advisor allows him to guide and encourage teacher candidates as they develop the necessary skills before they enter the workforce. “In my current position, I rely on my own time as a student at USM and many years as a band director to help young teachers build their confidence and instructional abilities. Positive learning environment, enhanced classroom management, challenging curriculum development, time management, and motivation to practice are a few of the important ingredients that help students reach their full potential.” Apart from student teaching supervision, a unique opportunity came during the summer of 2017, when Artie and USM sophomore percussion performance major, Alex Ocón, participated in an international music education project in Colombia, South America. The program was sponsored by the Baptist International Mission Board and helped to promote music education among the indigenous people in remote locations of Colombia. “Alex and I traveled to two remote locations where we were able to distribute soprano recorders and small percussion instruments to the children. Because of the level of poverty and the lack of music education being offered in public schools, this was the first time any of the students had ever tried to learn how to play an instrument. Each village had a week-long music camp with a final performance on Friday. It was truly remarkable how fast the kids learned to play their instruments. Witnessing the final performance and the joy on their faces will always be one of my fondest memories as a music teacher.” Offering his advice to future educators of any subject, Adams noted, “Find a successful mentor early in your career. USM has always been and continues to be staffed by some of the most helpful, caring and experienced music faculty in the country!”

JAZZ STUDIES The jazz studies program has a long tradition at Southern Miss, spanning almost 50 years, and offers both talented majors and non-majors the opportunity to be creatively engaged in learning and performing this uniquely American art form. The jazz program is located in our newly-renovated facility in the Fine Arts Building, which includes our large rehearsal hall, combo rehearsal space, and library and teaching studios. Jazz performance opportunities include 20-piece big bands and a variety of combos, which can include nontraditional instrumentation. Students are encouraged to explore both the great American songbook of jazz standards, as well as create their own compositions and arrangements. Course offerings include four semesters of jazz improvisation, jazz arranging and composition, jazz history, jazz band methods, as well as the previously mentioned ensembles. Jazz courses are open to interested non-majors with instructor approval.

MUSIC THEORY The music theory program, within the School of Music, promotes music theory as a subject of broad and passionate interest to performers, historians, ethnomusicologists, composers and theorists. For undergraduates, we offer a wide range of courses with various levels of concentration in the discipline. While many of our undergraduates have gone on to have professional careers in music, others have used their music study as an enriching foundation for other pursuits. Within the Southern Miss Graduate School, the music theory program offers a Master of Music degree in music theory. Normally, between two and four students are admitted each year, some with generous teaching assistantships, and they add to a tightly knit community of scholars who both benefit from, and add to, the intellectual and cultural life of the University. Most graduates continue their studies at another university to earn the Ph.D., using their time at Southern Miss to begin presenting and publishing research which will make their applications more competitive.

MUSIC HISTORY

• Master of Music - History and Literature

Alumna Carroll Cadden spent time in medical school and at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and currently supports the IT needs of faculty, staff, and students at Brandeis University. Besides playing with local orchestras, her main avocation is playing snare drum in a high-level Scottish (bag)pipe band. The highlight of Carroll’s music career so far was competing in the top grade at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, an annual event streamed by the BBC. She currently plays in a pipe band that designed its own drums and plays in the Swiss/Basel drumming styles. USM helped Carroll to not be afraid to try new things and to feel comfortable when changing paths in her major and career: “Even though you’ll enter the door of your intended major at USM and will be focused on leaving straight out that same door four years later, don’t be afraid to peer in some other interesting doors along the way—audit a class in art history; study Russian for a semester; learn to play a tune on bassoon; see what logic is about!”

REGINA GEORGE

WAS IN

THE PRIDE

If that doesn’t ring a bell, then you might not be a fan of the cult-classic “Mean Girls” movie and now a Broadway musical. Regina George was the leader of “the plastics,” and was envied, feared and loathed before getting her comeuppance. However, she’s a far cry from Southern Miss alumna, Regina George, but it has been a fun ride for our Regina since the movie debuted in 2004. George came to USM in 1995 to major in Music Education. Though she took some time off before finishing her degree, she returned in 2003 as a staff member of the university and while working full-time, was able to finish her BA in American Studies in 2007. “My mother encouraged me to consider Southern Miss because her uncle graduated from there when it was Mississippi State Teachers College,” said George. “Reluctantly, I scheduled the audition. Once on campus, I fell in love! Everyone was so nice, even the strangers who spoke on the sidewalks between buildings. The feeling I had that day was unlike any I’d felt at other institutions I’d visited. I felt like I was home.” She fondly recalls The Pride of Mississippi trip to perform in St. Patrick’s Day parades throughout Ireland in 1998. “It changed my life, began my love of international travel, and had a hand in leading me to my career in International Education” she said. She also was able to play with B.B. King at the Liberty Bowl and for President Aubrey K. Lucas’ retirement half-time show. “I cried on the field and he thanked me personally when he saw me walking out of the stadium in my uniform after the game.”

When the movie came out, a friend who always loved to prank her, called to tell her of her namesake. When she looked up the trailer, there was Rachel McAdams, wearing the same “R” necklace as she was wearing at that moment. As soon as the Broadway musical came out, she bought tickets to see the show - on a Wednesday, of course. She wore pink (of course!) and wore the “R” necklace. While purchasing souveniers at the show, they asked for her license and saw her name and were in disbelief. After the show, the amazement continued as cast memberafter cast member reacted to her name. Grey Henson, who plays Damian, asked her if Mean Girls had changed her life and if Tina Fey knew she existed. “I told him it was the best part of the last 14 years and I wasn’t sure if Tina knew about me, but I hoped he would tell her. Hopefully, she now knows a Regina George really exists.” Taylor Louderman, who plays Regina on Broadway, retweeted her post about the two Regina Georges meeting and their picture together. To say her notifications on Twitter went a little nuts, is an understatement. “It was all so…fetch.”
