CONCERTS 2019

THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI SCHOOL OF MUSIC

WELCOME! Dear School of Music Friends, Welcome to the 2019-20 Fall School of Music Concert Series. In this brochure, you will find a listing of the main public musical events that we are offering through December. You will see everything from solo recitals and chamber music concerts, to major ensemble performances and onetime signature events, such as the Casablanca Gala, which celebrates the 100th anniversary of the USM Symphony Orchestra (Mississippi’s oldest orchestra). Also, you will find the complete listing for our 2019-20 Connoisseurs Series. We are very proud of the many events that we are able present on our campuses, around the state and beyond. All of our musical events are high-quality, rewarding artistic experiences. Not only do we have world-class faculty and guests performing, we also have wonderful student ensembles that appear on stages in Hattiesburg, national conferences, and major performing venues around the world. While these performances are indeed the public part of what we do, there are also our academic faculty and staff members who teach and support our students in their music theory classes, music history classes, music education classes and private studios. These professors and staff members provide our students with the solid academic and musical foundation that prepares them for professional performing and teaching careers.

ABOUT THIS GUIDE We are happy to provide you a brief overview of this year’s fall events. They are part of more than 300 events that will take place this year. Events are subject to change. Please be sure to check our website at usm.edu/music and click on the “events” tab at the top right for more information and the latest updates. Please follow us on social media and stay connected to the latest news, behind-the-scenes information and special content just for you!

We are proud to be part of a dedicated community that appreciates the arts; Hattiesburg is truly one of Mississippi’s premier arts centers. Music has been an important part of this community’s artistic fabric for a very long time, and we are delighted to be able to contribute our part to that ongoing artistic legacy. It is often said that the two public windows of the university are the arts and athletics. This is certainly true, and this brochure is simply a peek into our musical window for this fall. There will be more in the spring! We hope that you will join us for these wonderful events all year long! Sincerely, Jay Dean Acting Director USM School of Music When you think music, think Southern Miss!
