Joseph Alessi comes to Southern Miss for a residency and performances this November. He was appointed principal trombone of the New York Philharmonic in the spring of 1985. Prior to joining the Philharmonic, Mr. Alessi was second trombone of The Philadelphia Orchestra for four seasons, and principal trombone of LìOrchestre symphonique de Montreal for one season. In addition, he has performed as guest principal trombonist with the London Symphony Orchestra in Carnegie Hall led by Pierre Boulez. Mr. Alessi is currently on the faculty of The Juilliard School; his students now occupy posts with many major symphony orchestras in the U.S. and internationally. As a clinician for the Edwards Instrument Co., he has also given master classes throughout the world and has toured Europe extensively as a master teacher and recitalist. He has performed as soloist with several leading concert bands, including the U.S. Military Academy Band at West Point, U.S. Army Band (Pershing’s Own) and the U.S. Marine Band (President’s Own).

Deborah Voigt is America’s favorite dramatic sopranos. Through her performances and television appearances, she is known for the singular power and beauty of her voice, her versatility and her captivating stage presence. Internationally revered for her performances, Voigt has given definitive performances of iconic roles in the operas of Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner. She is also noted for Italian operatic roles such as Tosca and Aida. With an extensive discography and multiple Billboard bestsellers, Voigt is known for her extraordinary ability to soar effortlessly and luminously above an orchestra with a rich, lustrous voice. Her recording of Strauss’s Egyptian Helen was named one of the best CDs of the year by Opera News. Ms. Voigt is a Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and was Musical America’s Vocalist of the Year 2003. In 2007, she won an Opera News Award for distinguished achievement.
