Healthy Lunches For Back to School

Family Health By: Ensign Moffitt, Registered Dietician Paper…check. Pens, pencils, and erasers…check. Backpack…check. Going through the back to school supply shopping list is part of helping your child get ready for back to school. However, two important things that are not on your child’s school supply list but should be are breakfast and lunch. These two meals can help improve their performance at school and during after school activities. Breakfast and lunch can also be a source of valuable nutrients that your child needs for growth and development. Kick off the school year right by taking the time to think and plan breakfast and lunch with these simple back to school meal tips. Breakfast can be simple especially when children would sometimes rather hit the snooze button than get up early to eat. One way to help you stay on track is using Choose My Plate components: protein, fruit, vegetables, grains (make half your child’s grains whole grain), and dairy or non-dairy. Sometimes it might be hard to incorporate all 5 components at breakfast, do your best to aim for 2 to 3 out of the 5 components. Here are some quick breakfast ideas that use 3 or more components of Choose My Plate: 4 1. Smoothies are a great way to incorporate protein, fruit, vegetables, dairy, and grains. Example of combinations: yogurt

with frozen berries and milk or yogurt, frozen banana, and peanut butter or yogurt, spinach, and frozen berries. 2. Peanut butter or nut butter on whole grain bread and banana or nut butter spread on a whole grain tortilla with a banana. 3. Yogurt with fruit or yogurt parfait made with fruit, chopped nuts, and granola. 4. Cereal with 5 – 10g of sugar and >3g of fiber per serving with milk or soymilk and a piece of fruit 5. Hard-boiled egg with toast and fruit or microwave egg wrapped in a whole grain tortilla with a little cheese and a piece of fruit. Lunch is another important meal that can be a source of nutrients that your child needs for growth and development. It can also be an opportunity to teach children healthy eating habits. You can work with your child to pack a lunch that meets all 5 components of Choose My Plate. Here are some lunch ideas that are not only nutritious but are delicious: 1. Wrap made with whole grain tortilla, slices of chicken or turkey, slice of cheese, slices of peppers, cucumbers, or tomatoes and a piece of fruit. 2. Tuna fish, chicken, or egg salad sandwich on whole grain bread or with whole grain crackers with vegetables sticks (peppers, carrots, zucchini, cauliflower, celery), fruit, and milk 3. Hummus and pita bread or chips with tomato slices or cucumber, side of fruit and cheese stick. 4. Pasta salad made with slices of ham or turkey and vegetables and peach slices with blueberries and milk 5. Almond butter sandwich on whole grain bread with banana or fruit, vegetable sticks with Greek style ranch dressing 6. Soup (beef and vegetable or chicken noodle or other soup that your child likes), with whole grain roll, cucumber salad, fruit salad.

Wellness Visits: To Start The School Year

By: USNH Yokosuka Health Promotion

6

The start of the new school year is nearing. As most parents know the beginning of a school year means not only getting school supplies ready but also our children. August is the time we start thinking about making sure not only our kids vaccines are current but checking on the physical health of our children. We want this year to be an amazing year for not only the students but the faculty as well. Making sure every child is healthy before school begins keeps them from missing classes and keep our teachers healthy and happy as well.

As parents we have the ability to make sure that our child is ready not only mentally but physically for the new school year. Wellness visits for our children are a key component to the start of any sports program. So why not make it a part of starting the new school year? We want everyone to stay healthy this year and wellness checks are where it begins. Let’s have a safe, healthy and happy school year this 2015-2016 school year!
