Quitting Tobacco

Great American SmokeOut By: USNH Yokosuka Health Promotion Mrs. Ivette Moore, Health Promotion Director USNH Yokosuka, Health Promotion

“Quit, even for one day. It is a race for your health and starts today” Every year on the third Thursday of November, the American Cancer Society (ACS) encourages millions of smokers to participate in the Great American Smokeout campaign and stop using tobacco for at least one day. According to the ACS (2016), since its inception in the 1970’s, the Great American Smokeout has helped tobacco users to make a plan and quit for good. In addition, the Great American Smokeout has helped communities including the military to led anti-tobacco efforts banning smoking in workplaces and restaurants, raising taxes on cigarettes, and limiting cigarette promotion. Although 1 in 5 of the United States adult population continues using cigarettes and other forms of tobacco, from 1965 to today, cigarette smoking has decreased from 42% to approximately 17%. Smoke free policies, media campaigns, and increases in the prices of tobacco products have been partially attributed to the efforts of the Great American Smokeout Campaign (ACS, 2016).
